GOOD AFTERNOON: Merry Christmas to everyone out there on this Christmas
Day. We have been tracking wintry precipitation across Gulf Coastal regions
overnight. Some sleet is expected over Southwest Alabama today, and there
may be wintry precip tonight south of I-85 where a Winter Storm Watch is in
effect. Nothing like that here, though, clearing skies expected overnight.

OUR FORECAST: Is an easy one. It is a temperature forecast until Friday
at least, as high pressure controls our weather. We will see freezes for
the next three nights, but things will continue to gradually warm up until
we see highs in the 60s later in the coming week. Our next chance of rain
will come late on Friday night into Saturday as a cold front approaches from
the northwest. Good news! New Years Eve may be dry. Another wet weather
system will slog through early in the first week of the new year, but no
cold air is in sight.

TEXAS SNOWS: While we were dreaming of a white Christmas here in Alabama,
folks in South and Southeast Texas were waking up to one. Some amazing
snowfall amounts from the Houston area:

Ganado (74 miles SW Houston) 12 inches
Louise (67 miles SW Houston) 12 inches
Bay City (57 miles SW Houston) 10 inches
Jamaica Beach (Galveston Island) 4 inches
Galveston 3 inches
Pearland (Just S of Houston) 2 inches
From the Corpus Christi area, some equally impressive amounts:
Corpus Christi Airport (CCP) 4.4 inches
(This sets new single storm record for city)
Port Aransas (On Gulf) 4 inches
Victoria (60 NNE CCP) 12 inches
Rockport (on Aransas Bay) 6 inches
Beeville (40 NW CCP) 10 inches
Port OConnor 8 inches
Port Lavaca 8 inches

Up to a foot of snow is widespread across Goliad and Jim Wells Counties.
Measurable snow has only fallen seven times in 107 years in Corpus Christi.

Brownsville picked up one and one half inches, setting a December record.
It was first measurable snow since 1895 in the South Texas city.

LOOKING IN THE RECORD BIN: Snow cover does wonders for record low
temperatures. Check out these frigid morning readings across the Midwest:

Evansville IN -11
Fort Wayne IN -15
Paducah KY -8

Indianapolis had nine inches on the ground this morning, this most on any
Christmas morning there.

ON THIS DATE IN 1974: Tropical Cyclone Tracy blasted Darwin, Australia with
150 mph winds, damaging or destroying nearly 90 percent of the city's
buildings. Tracy would be the worst cyclone ever to hit Australia 47
people died in the storm. Because Darwin seemed to be protected by an
offshore island, planners did not expect the city would ever experience
really high winds. Early on Christmas Eve, Tracy steamed right into Darwin.
Unaware, residents went on with their holiday festivities. The storm raged
through the pre-dawn hours, with the eye passing directly over Darwin about
4 am. Many residents were caught outside when the lull passed.

===================================================================

...Merry Christmas!...

GOOD MORNING! Well, our much ballyhooed low pressure system is there this
morning, over the western Gulf of Mexico. It is far enough south to keep
significant wintry precipitation well to the south of us. A mix of light
wintry precipitation is expected to occur along the immediate Gulf Coast,
south of I-10 early this morning. Accumulations, if any, will be very
light. A few bridges could become slippery, but that is about all. As
temperatures warm into the 40s, any precipitation will change to all rain.

TEXAS SNOWS: A variety of winter weather advisories and even a winter storm
warning were in effect over South Texas last night as the low pressure
system spread moisture into the cold air over the Lone Star State.
Accumulations of up to two inches were expected across parts of South Texas.

What an unlikely place for a White Christmas! Brownsville was looking for
their first significant snowfall since 1895.

OUR WEATHER: With the low far to the south, our weather is benign. After
temperatures stayed below freezing all day over parts of the area on Friday,
readings were quite cold again last night, mostly in the lower 20s.
Readings today will quite chilly again, with sunshine through high clouds.
Most areas will make the lower 40s for highs. The entire area will go
beneath freezing again tonight with clearing skies, and then a nice warm up
will commence on Sunday. With lots of sunshine again, readings will climb
to near 50 tomorrow and well into the 50s on Monday.

By Tuesday, we should make 60, with mild daytime temperatures in the 60s for
the remainder of the week. High pressure will be east of Alabama by then,
and our winds will shift around to the southeast in response, bringing about
the nice warming. Our next rain chance will come Friday and Saturday as a
cold front approaches.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Coldest Christmas Day of record in the central and
eastern United States. More than 125 record low temperatures for the date.
Twenty four of those records were all-time records for the month of
December. Galveston TX recorded 14F and Huntsville recorded a low of -1F.

WARMING TREND STARTS CHRISTMAS: It looks as if some parts of North Alabama
will have the second day in a row that the temperature failed to reach the
freezing mark. The good news is that a warming trend will start Saturday,
but it will not be that super fast, because we have a good snow pack as
close by as West Tennessee. North winds blowing off a snow field often fools
the weather models and keeps temperatures lower than you would normally
think. Even so, by the middle of next week we look for high temperatures to
be in the 60s. We also expect a generally dry 5 or 6 days in a row.

The clouds that were over us today will clear out tonight and by daybreak
temperatures will be well down in the teens. Even Saturday night will have
mid 20s. We should get well above freezing Saturday and the warming trend
will continue after that. See our day-by-day forecast.

We're also watching another low pressure area forming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Amazingly, that could bring a mix of light sleet, light snow and light rain
to places like New Orleans, Gulf Shores, Mobile and Pensacola tonight and
early tomorrow. No accumulation expected. We have a report from Jake
Skellett, WBRZ-TV, Baton Rouge, that they were getting a mix of light snow
flurries and sleet with the temperature still only 31 at noon!.

A REAL DEEP FREEZE: The temperature plunged to a bitter cold 45 below zero
this morning in NE Minnesota in the town of Embarrass. It was 41 below at
Babbit and 35 below at International Falls in the same general area. In
Alaska, it was 53 below at Bettles with 30 inches of snow on the ground.
Valdez, Alaska has 47 inches of snow on the ground and the wind chill was
running close to minus 60 in parts of Northern Alaska.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL WEATHER: No additional significant precipitation is expected
in a 500-mile radius of Birmingham for tonight and Christmas Day, although
showers will be moving across the Florida Peninsula. If you're traveling to
the west and north, be advised that a heavy snow cover remains from West
Tennessee across Kentucky and much of Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.
Evansville, Indiana, on the Ohio River, had a record 19 inches of snow from
this historic storm.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanksgiving and Christmas are my favorite
holidays. Hope you will excuse me as I go into a reflective mood. There is
so much that I have to be thankful for that I sometimes feel guilty. One
thing is little Miss Molly. She has brought a lot of joy and pleasure to my
life. I was the member of the family that was reluctant to own another dog
based on us having bad luck with our previous three. Boy, was I wrong. Molly
loves everybody and she doesn't like for me to get out of her sight. I guess
you can call that "doggy-stalking," but I love it...amazing how a little
9-pound animal can be so loving and faithful. If something were to happen to
little Molly, I would cry buckets of big tears. With 6 grandkids over
Wednesday, Molly got no sleep whatsoever so she slept almost all day
yesterday. When she and I went for a walk early this morning, it was bona
fide, bone-chilling cold. Even I, a very hot-natured guy, put on a heavy
coat..we have received over 2,000 emails about Molly since beginning this
little update two years ago...I treasure every one...your interest is most
appreciated. We wish you a Merry Christmas!

THE POLAR EXPRESS: As promised, cold Arctic air has arrived. At 1:00 p.m.,
Birmingham's temperature was only 28 degrees, with a north wind averaging 16
mph, making for a wind chill index of 16.

We have received a number of reports of snow flurries across the northern
half of Alabama this morning, but as the air becomes drier those will go
away this evening.

Temperatures will remain frigid through Christmas day, with the coldest
temperatures coming Saturday morning, when the mercury will drop into the 12
to 19 degree range over north and central Alabama.
A warming trend begins Saturday afternoon, which will last into next week.

In fact, the longer range computer models suggest we will be in the mid 60s
over the latter half of next week as we wrap up 2004.
Other than a few leftover snow flurries this afternoon, we do not expect any
precipitation around here until the latter half of next week.

GULF COAST SNOW? A wave of low pressure on the Arctic front in the Gulf of
Mexico could bring a few snow flakes to Mobile, Gulf Shores, and Pensacola
late tomorrow and tomorrow night, but the deepest moisture will be over the
Gulf waters, and accumulation is not expected at this time.

A SERIOUSLY WHITE CHRISTMAS: A snowstorm of historic proportions has
crippled parts of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky in the last 24 hours. To show
how serious the situation is, look at these reports.

.....In Southern Indiana, 24 inches of snow now on the ground at Washington,
but drifts are five feet deep. The town of Crawford also has five-foot
drifts.

....Parts of Kentucky now buried in a snowfall that is more than they
normally get in an entire winter.

.....In Northern Kentucky, Hancock has 17 to 19 inches of snow average depth
but drifts reach five feet.

.....Lots of motorists stranded in the heavy snow areas. In Cincinnati,
thousands of people are without power.

.....At Scottsburg, Indiana, 29 inches of snow fell from this storm. That
town is on Interstate 65 in Southern Indiana about 30 miles due north of
Louisville.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: An epic cold wave was diving south to the Gulf Coast.
A total of 122 cities across the central and eastern U.S. reported record
low temperatures for the date, including Birmingham. Forty one of the cities
also record lows for the month of December, some which had only been set the
day before. The temperature fell to 11 degrees at New Orleans and Lake
Charles LA, 4 below zero at San Angelo TX and 26 below zero at Topeka KS,
all establishing all-time record lows for those locations. Birmingham
dropped to one degree. The pressure at the center of the anticyclone reached
an amazing 1061 millibars. Meanwhile, a strong storm moving across the
Florida peninsula produced heavy snows along the Carolina coast. Fifteen
inches of snow fell at Wilmington NC and 13.3 inches at Cape Hatteras NC. It
was the first white Christmas of record from Florida to North Carolina.

...Cold Air Returns In A Big Way...

Yet another big blast of frigid Arctic air rolls into Alabama today on strong northwest winds. Wind chill values will drop into the single digits at times, with temperatures holding in the low 30s most of the day. A few snow flurries are possible during the early morning hours, but as yesterday’s big storm pulls away from the state dry air will take over pretty quickly.

SANTA WILL LOVE IT: The cold air will stay in place through Christmas day. A disturbance that forms over the Gulf of Mexico is expected to remain well to the south of us, so no white Christmas for north or central Alabama this year. But, if the moisture can nudge inland just a bit, it is possible for a few snowflakes to fall in places like Mobile, Gulf Shores, Pensacola, and Destin tomorrow night and early Christmas morning. A very rare event for the immediate coast.

WARMER DAYS: A warming trend begins on Sunday, and the overall upper air flow goes through a major change which should keep real cold air well to the north of Alabama during the week after Christmas, and maybe even into the first few days of 2005.

At this time it looks like our next decent chance of rain will come around the middle part of next week.

A REAL WHITE CHRISTMAS: A snow emergency was declared in Cincinnati yesterday, where one foot of snow was expected by this morning. Snow amounts exceeding ten inches were reported late last night in parts of Southern Illinois and Indiana and sections of western and northern Kentucky.

BAMA RAIN: Totals yesterday included 2.09” at Brookley Field in Mobile, .85” at Bessemer, and .56” at Riverchase.
