...Black Ice A Problem...

Dangerous road conditions exist across the areas of Alabama that received snow on Friday. The slush, snow and leftover water froze overnight into one of the most dangerous weather hazards: black ice. Numerous wrecks started happening on Birmingham area interstates during the early evening. In addition, emergency managers across the area urged people not to drive as roads became sheets of ice. Power was out in parts of Homewood after an accident downed a utility pole.

These dangerous driving conditions will continue through the morning until sunshine melts the ice later today. Temperatures will barely rise into the lower 40s today despite the sunshine.

MORE SNOW IN OUR FUTURE?: Clouds will thicken again tonight as our next storm system approaches. Sunday will feature highs in the middle 40s after morning lows in the upper 20s. Rain will move back into the area Sunday afternoon and evening. It will change over to snow during the overnight. We could see an inch or two of snow again by Monday morning. Snow flurries will linger until lunchtime Monday as temperatures struggle to rise at all from morning lows near freezing.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday night will be cold, with lows in the lower and middle 20s. Tuesday will feature sunshine, but highs will struggle to reach the lower 40s. Wednesday will feature a slight moderation, with highs reaching the upper 40s. We should see 50s on Thursday. By Friday, our next storm system will be moving along the Gulf Coast and that means that rain will return by late Friday night. Rain will end on Saturday, followed by colder and dry weather for Sunday.

49 OUT OF 50 STATES HAD SNOW YESTERDAY: It may have never happened in history: 49 or 50 states reporting measurable snow. Every state but Hawaii had snow on Friday. Hawaii was the lone holdout. Sometimes there is snow on Mauna Kea volcano, but not yesterday.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly netcast that's all about weather. Each week, the show features some of the best minds in the business. This Monday night, one of the top tropical experts in the world, Dr. Keith Blackwell from the University of South Alabama will be the guest WeatherBrain. Keith is an Alabama native and good friend. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1899: A blizzard dubbed the "Storm King" culminated the week of intense cold that had engulfed the eastern half of the
country. The Storm King spread a wide swath of snow from Florida to Maine. New York City already had 11 inches of snow on the ground when the snow began on February 13th. New York City picked up 15.6 inches of snow as the Storm King held sway. The heavy snowfall was accompanied by temperatures near zero. ...Snow Gradually Ending...

COUNTRYSIDE LIKE A CHRISTMAS CARD: A good part of Alabama has had snow overnight and today, but it will be gradually ending late today and tonight. Some of the heavier amounts were down in south/central and SE Alabama in places like Auburn and Troy and in Sumter County over on the west side. One of the first reports of difficult driving conditions came from the small town of Cuba south of Livingston. Bridges and roads had become quite slushy by late morning.

We will not know a full list of snow depth reports until tonight or tomorrow morning. It was expected that places like Troy, Auburn and Montgomery could get 3 or more inches. Across north/central Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston we were forecasting 1 to 2 inches.

By early afternoon, the great Alabama countryside looked more like a beautiful white Christmas or a Kinkade painting. The snow was wet enough to cling to the barren trees. It appeared that much of the Birmingham area had a 1-inch cover by midafternoon. Even deep in South Alabama, there were travel problems. US-43 in North Mobile County saw bridges ice up and snow accumulating instead of melting when hitting the ground.

A BLACK ICE PROBLEM: Even as cold as it is, the snow cover will melt some on black asphalt highways and bridges. Temperatures will go below freezing early tonight, so black ice could become quite a problem. It is clear ice, so it becomes the same color as the pavement and difficult to see.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Quite cold tonight dropping to near 22. Clouds will increase late Saturday and on Sunday. Some rain by Sunday afternoon, possibly changing to snow after midnight. Monday will be very uncomfortable with morning snow flurries. High only in the 30s and NW winds up to 25 mph. Back to the low 20s Tuesday morning.

STORM ALERT 2010: The next program is next Thursday night at Hale County High School in Moundville. I was once a student there. The program starts at 7:00 and is over by 8:15. The 33/40 weather crew will present some very educational and interesting programs.

IS THIS POSSIBLE: We have seen some ideas bounced around today, that this could become a situation where all 48 states had some measureable snow at the same time. That would become incredibly unusual. Even North Florida got some measureable snow out of this storm. The official NWS Snow Survey this morning showed 67.1% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. It was so extensive in the central part of the country that there was a blanket of snow all the way from Canada to south Louisiana.

ROAMING: Cold temperatures this morning: 10 below zero at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska and 17 below at International Falls, Minnesota...it was 103 this afternoon in San Juan, Argentina, but it is summer there.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never ever know what to expect when walking with my little girl. This morning, Molly and I were coming back home from the north end of the walking track. She saw little Bo, the new puppy, come out in his backyard on a bathroom break. She pulled as hard on her leash as possible trying to drag me down into his backyard. She was not looking and did not know that little Dino had escaped and was approaching us like a Japanese bullet train. He did not have a leash. Just before getting to Molly, he became airborne and landed on the back of Molly. She had not seen him and it scared the living nightlights out of her. Then we had three little dogs in a frenzy running in circles and enjoying life. It made my morning. Life goes on.

...Rare Southern Snowstorm...

With a cold weather pattern over the Eastern U.S. and an active southern branch of the jet stream in place, we thought it was a matter of time until parts of the Deep South caught a snowstorm. That snowstorm is in progress this morning. Dallas recorded their biggest single calendar day snowfall. The total was standing at 9.4 inches as of 9 p.m. last night with a couple of hours of snow expected. It is also the fourth snowiest winter season in Dallas weather history. In addition to the Texas snow, a wide swath of 3-6 inch amounts will have fallen by this evening from northern Louisiana into western Georgia.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT: The NWS maintains a Winter Storm Warning for Central and South Alabama due to heavy snow. Accumulations are expected to be in the 1 to 2 inches in the I-20 corridor, with 3-5 inches over areas south of that and a dusting to one inch to the north of that. Snow will continue spreading east through the morning, ending from the west beginning by late morning exiting eastern sections by late afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the lower 30 during the day. Remember, the winter weather advisories and warnings will expire the afternoon, but the threat of deadly travel problems will continue into the day on Saturday when sunshine should melt the snow and ice on roads.

MARDI GRAS SNOW? Could Mobile see 10 inches of snow from this system. There is a chance that could happen. Tonight's Krewe of Columbus Parade could have a white backdrop. Would that be a first?

YOUR WEEKEND: After morning lows in the middle 20s, tomorrow will feature mostly sunny skies, and highs limited to the middle 40s. Sunday will be just a tad warmer, but look for another chance of snow Sunday night, with an inch or so quite possible across the northern half of the state.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Cold/dry conditions will prevail through much of the week ahead as a trough of low pressure remains over the eastern United States. Look for another storm system next weekend, but it should be warm enough for the precipitation to be rain.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly netcast that's all about weather. This week's episode featured Dave Freeman from KSN
in Wichita talking about weather's sacred cows and the Greensburg EF5 tornado in 2007. Next week, Dr. Keith Blackwell, renowned tropical weather expert from the University of South Alabama will be on the show. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Two strong tornadoes hit Central Alabama. One in Sumter County was an F3 that hit a train. Thirty nine of the 41 cars derailed as the train crossed the trestle over the Suchanoochee River. The conductor and fireman on the train were killed and many others injured. Later that day, the north side of Montgomery was devastated by a F3 that killed twenty six people. Get a daily dose of weather history by following me on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Winter Storm Warning...

WAITING ON THE SNOW: Lots of excitement among Alabama residents today awaiting some possible measureable snow that will affect a large part of north/central Alabama southward almost to the coast.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Winter Storm Warning from midnight tonight all the way through 6:00 p.m. Friday for numerous counties in Central Alabama. Those areas extend all the way from Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston southward into South Alabama including places like Montgomery and Troy. Further north a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect.

Even down in extreme south Alabama, the NWS in Mobile is warning of 2 to 4 inches in the Gulf Shores-Mobile area.

By Friday morning, the low-pressure area that we are very interested in, will be over the north/central Gulf south of Louisiana and over into the NE Gulf by nightfall Friday. That low will spread lots of moist air inland and our temperatures are already very cold. All of Alabama is either under a Winter Weather Advisory or Winter Storm Warning except the Tennessee Valley. The snow should taper off later in the day Friday.

BIRMINGHAM AREA: We believe that light snow will start before daybreak and become steadier as the morning goes on and diminish late Friday afternoon. We are now projecting 2-4 inches for this part of the state, which will also be true for the Tuscaloosa-Anniston area.
TRAVEL PROBLEMS: The ground is frozen and the infrastructure is thoroughly chilled. With temperatures expected to be in the mid 20s when the snow starts tomorrow morning, there could be some travel problems during morning drive. This is especially true on bridges and overpasses and elevated roadways.

BEYOND FRIDAY: Very cold Saturday morning with lows around 22 and highs only about 40 or so. More clouds move in Sunday with some rain by afternoon and probably some snow flurries Sunday night. On Monday, another glob of cold arctic air will be sweeping south eastward into the Deep South, including all of Alabama. We should have occasional snow flurries on Monday. High temperatures will struggle to get above freezing and a north wind of 15-25 mph may want you to move to South Florida.

ROAMING: This winter situation is a big event. Numerous counties all the way from the Texas-New Mexico border eastward to Georgia have some kind of winter weather problems with advisories, watches or warnings. Meanwhile, the Washington-Baltimore area continues to dig out. Baltimore has now received enough snow to make it the most ever in any one winter and as much as the last five winters combined. Cold temperatures this morning included 22 below at Embarrass, Minnesota, which was colder than Alaska where it was 16 below at Northway. The NWS Snow Survey this morning indicates that 63.5% of the lower 48 states is covered with a blanket of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We continue to get loads of e-mail about Little Miss Molly from, not only here in Alabama, but many states. Many of them are encouraging me to write a book about her and I will one day, because she is so easy to write about. I do not know what the title will be, but it may be something like—Molly and Me. In the six years or so that I have written about her in this small space each day, we have received over 5,000 e-mails from many different states and several foreign countries. I am so glad that so many people love their pets. I recommend at least one for every family. They are as relaxing as eating a Prozac sandwich. Life goes on.

...Potential Winter Storm Ahead...

WINTER STORM WATCH FOR SOUTHERN HALF OF ALABAMA: Our weather will remain dry and cold today with a generally cloudy sky. But, of course, most of our attention this morning is focused on weather developments expected tomorrow. A winter storm will parts of the Deep South with snow potential almost to the Gulf Coast.

WHERE AND HOW MUCH? The NWS continues a winter storm watch for roughly the southern half of Alabama for tomorrow. We believe the heaviest snow, generally in the 1 to 3 inch range, will be between U.S. 80 and U.S. 84. Some cities in this zone include Monroeville, Evergreen, Ozark, Greenville, Troy, Eufaula, Auburn, and Union Springs. Isolated amounts to 5 inches are possible in this patr of South Alabama, but we won't be able to identify these areas until the snow bands actually set up tomorrow morning.

For the I-20 corridor (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston), the snow tomorrow will be light, and we don't expect too many problems. A dusting is likely, with a few spots perhaps picking up one inch. North of I-20, only scattered light snow or snow flurries are expected with no significant accumulation.

It is interesting to note that accumulating snow is possible as far south as I-10, including cities like Mobile, Spanish Fort, and Bay Minette. And, snow flakes could mix with rain in the immediate coastal communities like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

WHEN? The snow should move into Southwest Alabama early tomorrow morning, with snow overspreading the southern half of the state during the day. All of the snow should be out of Alabama by 9:00 tomorrow night.

TO THE WEST: The NWS in Jackson is forecasting snow amounts of 3 to 5 inches along I-20 from Jackson to Meridian, with potential of 4 to 6 inches for the communities south of I-20 in Mississippi. Snow is also likely late tonight and tomorrow morning over Louisiana, generally north of I-10. However, New Orleans could see a few snow flakes as well.

THE WEEKEND/NEXT WEEK: Saturday will be dry and cold. Then, a clipper type system will bring the risk of a little light rain or snow to Alabama Sunday afternoon, followed by much colder air early next week. Looks like we stay below freezing all day Monday with a few snow flurries around. Mid-week looks dry and cold.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY TONIGHT: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be tonight at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

...Stubborn Ole Man Winter...

SNOW IN OUR FUTURE: We are headed toward a risk of a snow event in Alabama, but that is still two days away and we can better define that by tomorrow morning. The key to the snow is a low-pressure area that will move across the northern Gulf of Mexico. The exact track will determine how much moisture is pumped inland and how much snow and where it will be. The low should be just off the Texas coast by late tomorrow and over the north/central Gulf by Friday. By Saturday morning, it will be about 100 miles east of Charleston. This is based on early morning model runs.

It is simply too early to be very comfortable forecasting snow amounts. We think, for the I-20 corridor including the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-Anniston area) the accumulation will be light, less than an inch, but maybe enough to cover the ground. As you go southward, there is a better chance of accumulating snow with maybe 1 inch from just south of Birmingham, as far south as Auburn. The best chance will be in places like Montgomery southward. There could be a few spots of 1 to 3 inches. We want to express a lot of caution in this. If the low-pressure area were to change its course by even 25 or 30 miles, it could change those amounts.

Here in central Alabama, the timeframe on the snow will be mainly during the morning, but most of it over by late afternoon. Over the north part of the state, there may be only a dusting.

To our west, the NWS/Jackson has posted a Winter Storm Watch for South Mississippi including the Jackson-Meridian area.

ANY WARMTH IN OUR FUTURE: Not really, although there will be some moderating temperatures by Saturday afternoon reaching the mid to upper 40s. The barn door is still open to the Upper Midwest where we are getting occasional invasions of arctic air. A fresh supply of that will be inviting itself down into Alabama over the weekend, especially on Monday. High temperatures on Monday will struggle to reach the middle 30s. Another hard freeze for Tuesday morning.

STORM ALERT 2010: The next program is tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at the Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. That is in the east edge of Walker County. A week later, it is in Moundville at Hale County High School. That is in the north edge of the county 6 miles north of Havana Junction.

AROUND THE USA: A horrible, horrible winter for many areas. The USA Snow Survey this morning shows 63.3% of the lower 48 under a blanket of snow. If you were to add the hundreds of snow reports together and divide, you would find an average depth of 8 inches. That is incredible. The Washington area is closing in on having the most snow in any winter and they have a very long data base—same story for Baltimore. A Blizzard Warning for New York City. The mayor has ordered hundreds of snow removal vehicles to clear 6,300 miles of NYC streets.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out very early with Little Miss Molly this morning and even I, the warmest nature guy north of the equator, got cold. It was in the low 20s with a brisk wind. For the first time ever, I saw Molly raise one of her paws off the ground any time she stopped to sniff. The ground was frozen solid. The majority owner had put two sweaters on her. As soon as she got home from the Argo Animal Clinic last night, (after having her teeth cleaned) she walked in the living area and immediately grabbed a ball to play with. She had gone all day without a game and she had gone 18 hours without a drop of water or food. She ate like James Spann would in his favourite barbecue place in Billingsley—almost sucking the food in. Life goes on.

COLD AND UNSETTLED: Dry and cold weather is the story for Alabama today, with intervals of sunshine and a high in the low 40s. A brisk northwest wind will make it feel colder. Expect another significant freeze tonight with a low in the mid 20s by daybreak tomorrow. Then, we stay dry tomorrow, but clouds will be on the increase during the day in advance of the next storm system approaching in the southern branch of the jet stream.

SOUTHERN SNOW FRIDAY: Confidence in snow on Friday across the Deep South is high, but the details are challenging to nail down due to conflicting computer model output. A deep low pressure area is forecast to develop over the northern Gulf of Mexico Friday, and promises to spread snow into the Gulf Coast region. The best moisture will be over Louisiana, South Mississippi, South Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle, for now it seems like the "sweet spot" for accumulating snow will be generally along a line from Jackson, MS to Meridian, MS to Demopolis to Montgomery and on to Opelika, or along U.S. Highway 80. Snow totals in the general area could be in the 1 to 3 inch range. Accumulating snow is possible Friday as far south as U.S. 84, or along a line from Monroeville to Evergreen to Dothan.

Farther north, we are forecasting only light snow for now for the I-20 corridor (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston), with flurries to the north over the northern third of the state. It is interesting to note this system could bring snow as far south as I-10, or for places like Mobile, Crestview, and Tallahassee.

TIMING: The best chance of snow will be during the day Friday, generally in the 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. time frame. The snow will begin over South Mississippi after midnight tomorrow night.

REMEMBER: This is a low confidence forecast, which means there is a reasonable chance that the forecast snow amounts and placement could change during the next 36 hours, so stay tuned.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday looks dry and cold, but an Alberta Clipper type system blows in here from the northwest on Sunday, and will bring some risk of light snow or snow flurries. Then, even colder air arrives early next week. Parts of North Alabama could have a hard time getting above freezing Monday with an icy north wind. We will drop to near 20 degrees by Tuesday morning, with teens likely for the colder valleys across North and Central Alabama.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY TOMORROW NIGHT: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be tomorrow night at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat!

...Winter Rolls On...

THE ALABAMA STORY: And it is a story that tells us little or no short-sleeve weather for at least through the middle of next week. We will see sort of a parade of globs of cold arctic air pushing south. Most of the colder air is south of NW Canada—our main source region for bitter cold in the winter. We even have some type of a snow threat in the forecast for Friday, but more about that later.

Meanwhile, much colder air was blowing into the state this afternoon and the cold front was pushing into east and SE Alabama. By nightfall today, it will already be freezing or lower over much of north and west Alabama headed to the low and mid 20s at daybreak. You will really feel the biting cold tomorrow as NW winds of 15 to 25 make it feel even colder and the temperature struggles to reach the 40-degree mark. We project a low of 23 Thursday morning and clouds will be moving in during the day.

NOW ABOUT FRIDAY: You may see a number of differing forecasts on what will occur Friday. A lot of that can be blamed on weather models that traditionally change their mind several times before a snow event in the Deep South. A low-pressure area will develop over northern Mexico by Thursday morning and move into the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning. Some of the weather models take it much further south than our last storm system. In fact, one projection is through the Florida Straits. If that happens, it would reduce the risk of snow in Alabama except the extreme south. But it is far, far too early to put much confidence in that. To try to project snow amounts this early will lead to disappointment. After all, it is still three days away and often it is not easy to project snow amounts even 24 to 36 hours in advance. At this time, it appears that south Alabama has the best chance for at least some snow.

THE WEEKEND: Very cold with lows in the 20s and highs moderating just a bit to around 48 to 50.

THE ALABAMA COAST: NWS/Mobile is calling for a chance of rain Thursday mixing with sleet Thursday night. They also look for snow Friday morning.

A SNOW-COVERED NATION: Well, not everybody, but the official NWS Snow Survey this morning showed 65.5% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. That is not only the most so far this winter, but it is unusual in any winter. This has been a historic winter. Washington has received 45 inches of snow so far this winter—the third greatest amount of all time. In nearby Baltimore, over 60 inches of snow this winter is the second snowiest of all time. Washington weather records go way, way back. This morning there was still 36 inches of snow on the ground at Aberdeen, Maryland and 32 inches at Baltimore-Washington Airport.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our neighbor up the street, Sue Giovanni, saw 12 robins or redbirds walking around in her backyard last week. Does that mean we can cancel the snow forecast and look forward to spring? Our abode is quiet as a mouse today, because Little Miss Molly is at the Argo Animal Clinic having her teeth cleaned. Every time I walk through the living area this morning in search of coffee, I caught myself looking for her. Normally I would stop and give her a head rub or a belly rub. She would stick her feet straight up in the air to enjoy it more. Life goes on.

...Cold and Wet; A Few Afternoon Flurries...

BLUSTERY DAY: Another day that is best spend inside by a warm fire reading a book, or taking a nap. I know that sure doesn't work for me, and probably won't work for most of you, but a nice idea anyway. A cold rain will fall this morning as you drive into work with temperatures in the low 40s. Rain totals of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely before the rain tapers off late this morning.

AN ICY WIND: Northwest winds will increase this afternoon, gusting as high as 25 mph, bringing in much colder air. Temperatures will fall into the 30s this afternoon, and there could be enough lingering moisture for a few snow flurries across the northern half of the state. All of the precipitation will end by late afternoon, and we will forecast gradual clearing tonight with lows down in the mid 20s by daybreak tomorrow. Tomorrow and Thursday will be cold and dry with highs in the 40 to 45 degree range.

POTENTIAL WINTER STORM FRIDAY: The next system in the southern branch of the jet stream will impact Alabama on Friday, and with a very cold airmass in place, the stage is set for potential winter storm conditions across the Deep South. It is too early to be specific; we really need to get today's weather system out of here before we get deal with accumulation possibilities, but computer model data suggests several inches of snow could fall over parts of Alabama, with the best moisture axis actually showing up south of Birmingham. Seems like the "sweet spot" could very well be somewhere between I-20 and U.S. 84. This system does have the potential for some travel difficulties, but again it doesn't make too much sense trying to get into deep detail at this early stage of the game. Keep an eye on our forecasts in coming days; it promises to be pretty interesting.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now we are talking cold and dry weather for Alabama on Saturday and Sunday, with highs around 40 on Saturday, with low to mid 40s Sunday. We will be in the 20s early Saturday and Sunday morning.

SURPRISE SNOW: Our friends up in extreme North Alabama woke up to a surprise snow event yesterday morning; parts of Laudendale and Colbert Counties had three inches of snow on the ground at one point, with snow accumulation as far east as Huntsville and Scottsboro. A number of accidents were reported in the Muscle Shoals area, and some school systems closed for the day. Road conditions improved by midday as temperatures eased into the upper 30s.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY THURSDAY: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on this Thursday (February 11) at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat!

...The Weather Is On The Move...

MOTHER NATURE THROWING FAST BALLS: The lady known as Mother Nature sure is keeping us on our toes. She has rolled out a very interesting winter for us so far and the story continues to unfold. We will go through quite a few changes this week, including a sharp change to colder and even some sort of a snow threat.

We also have to glance over our shoulder toward the north to keep track of how far south there is a blanket of snow. Sometimes we have to use our weather models with a grain of salt when we are projecting temperatures. A snow pack as far south as Tennessee and Arkansas can alter both our low and high temperatures from what the models say.

NOW DOWN TO BUSINESS: This is a general schedule of what we expect. A slight chance of rain this evening becoming more widespread after midnight; a steady cold rain on Tuesday; a rather fast-moving cold front will pass the Birmingham area by midday; the wind will shift around to the NW to 15-25 mph with a sharp drop in temperature. We are projecting 46 for a high, but it could be near freezing by 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow evening. Windy cold weather continues on Wednesday with a high struggling to reach 40 and lows in the mid 20s. Another cold morning Thursday, but clouds will move in by afternoon.

OUR MAIN SUBJECT OF INTEREST: Let us go ahead and blame it on the Gulf of Mexico, because she is going to give us another low-pressure area forming over the Northern Gulf by Thursday night and early Friday. The low is expected to track eastward. There are some indications that this low will be further south than the last one. Meanwhile, cold air will still be in place and there is some risk of snow with a better chance being over the south half of the state and maybe even better for the extreme south. If the low tracks as far south as late information indicates, even the south may not get very much. The most important sentence in this whole discussion is: it is too early to be specific about Friday. We can finetune it much better tomorrow.

There was some snow across the Tennessee Valley this morning—as much as 2 or 3 inches in places—and there were even a few travel problems.

ROAMING: Washington and Baltimore really caught it over the weekend. Washington did not get quite as much snow as projected, but enough to essentially shut down the city. West of Baltimore there was one report of 34 inches. And now they are expecting more snow, especially tomorrow...cold spots this morning included 23 below zero at Jordan, Montana and 33 below at Barrow, Alaska where the wind chill was 45 below...the morning snow survey shows 62% of the lower 48 covered by snow. This does not count the additional snow in Arkansas, West Tennessee and extreme North Alabama early today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As I have written many times, Little Miss Molly is a real diplomat. She loves people as much as other dogs. This morning we met a new neighbor who has a cute little Dachsshund. He runs across his backyard trying to reach Molly every time we go by until the end of the leash stops him. Molly also had another rapid play session with little Bo who weighs half of what Molly does, but he can out maneuver Molly. In fact, he runs circles around Molly so fast that she gets a bit frightened and comes and sits on my shoe. Translation: please pick me up. I tried to catch up on ballgames with Molly over the weekend, but I really believe if we had 10 games each day, she would still want more. She is a dynamo of energy. I watched the Super Bowl last night, however, the majority owner who has an interest in football less than zero, watched Sound of Music. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Tonight...

I knew better than to believe the models that insisted on clearing during the day Sunday. It seems lately that the models have been way to fast in forecasting clearing in the wake of low pressure systems. The thick stratocumulus cloud deck and cold air advection wreaked havoc on temperature forecasts as well, holding readings in the middle 30s across Central Alabama.

SUNSHINE TO RETURN TODAY: The sun will make a return appearance today. At least for a little while. At least we think it will. It had better hurry, because clouds will be thickening again tonight in advance of our next storm system. Highs today should make the middle 50s across the area.

RAIN TONIGHT/TUESDAY: By tonight, low pressure will be forming over Louisiana. Rain will move into the state late tonight. Rainfall amounts will average one half to three quarters of an inch. As the rain ends from the west during the day Tuesday, colder air will follow. As temperatures fall, there could be a brief changeover to snow before the precipitation ends completely. No problems are anticipated. Temperatures Tuesday night will fall into the lower and middle 20s. Wednesday will feature clearing skies, but with cold air advection occurring on the back of a strong northwesterly wind, the mercury will struggle to get out of the 30s.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: Wednesday night will be cold as well, with lows dropping well below freezing again. By Thursday morning, low pressure will be forming over the western Gulf of Mexico. This low will move northeast spreading precipitation back into the state late Thursday night or Friday morning. It is still up in the air as to whether it will be rain or snow, with lots of model disagreement. Every solution from a significant snow over the northern half of the state, to nearly no precipitation across Central Alabama, to just a cold rain is on the table. As we get closer to the event, we will hopefully see some model consensus. Stay tuned.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, Dave Freeman from KSN in Wichita will join the show as the Guest WeatherBrain. He will certainly have some stories to tell. He also is a leader in leveraging social science in making weather forecasts better. It will be an interesting discussion Listen to the show for free at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. You can also follow us on Twitter @wxhistorian.

MAKING OUR FORECASTS MORE EFFECTIVE: We'd like your input on how we can make forecasts more effective for you. Please take a moment to read the blog post today about what you would like to see in your forecasts and respond with your comments. Go to w http://www.alabamawx.com/?p=26538 to read and respond.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A fast moving cold front brought high winds and a snow to the mountains around Salt Lake City as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games were getting underway. Wind gusts of up to 71 mph caused problems for Ski Jumping, and the competition was postponed. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Clouds Hanging Tough...

Low clouds hung tough over Alabama early on this Super Bowl Sunday morning, but those clouds should break up some as we head toward afternoon, bringing back something that has been in short supply lately: sunshine. Despite the sunshine, with colder air still flowing into Alabama on northerly winds, highs today will still be very chilly, with afternoon highs only reaching the middle and upper 40s. Lows tonight will be in the upper 20s on average.

SUPER BOWL FORECAST: Tomorrow night's WeatherBrains guest panelist has a final look at the Super Bowl forecast… she says partly cloudy with high in Miami of 69F. Low tonight down in the 50s. She says fans will want to bring a jacket.

RAIN AGAIN BY MONDAY NIGHT: We continue to be in an active weather pattern with a busy southern branch of the jetstream. This will bring us another storm system by Monday night and Tuesday. After a partly cloudy day with highs in the middle 50s, clouds will increase again Monday night. Temperatures will not drop very much Monday night, remaining in the 40s. Rain will arrive during the night, possibly starting as sleet. The rain will continue into Tuesday morning. It looks like the main window for rain will be between 3 a.m. and noon. Rainfall amounts will average one half to three quarters of an inch. Some places may see a little sunshine by late afternoon. Highs will be in the middle and upper 40s.

ANOTHER SNOWPOCALYPSE? Even as a debate rages about whether to call this weekend's storm "snowpocalypse" or "snowmageddon," worries arise that this next storm may be as bad. Snow will begin again Tuesday afternoon in the D.C./Philadelphia Corridor. Even heavier snow will arrive Wednesday morning. We could be measuring the snow in feet again by then in many of the same spots.

SNOW FOR US LATER IN THE WEEK? Still not enough model consistency to produce a forecast with any real confidence for the late week system for us. Until we resolve the track of the low, it will be difficult to pin down the chance of rain or snow. So for now, we will split the difference and call for just that, a chance of rain or snow starting late Thursday night into Friday. The weekend will be cold and dry.

WEATHER SCRUBS ENDEAVOUR LAUNCH: Weather forced the postponement of the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida overnight. A band of low clouds moved over the Cape during the night and reduced visibility to below acceptable limits. Engineers will try again early Monday morning, with launch scheduled for 4:14 a.m. EST.

WEATHERBRAINS: I see some stimulating discussions ahead for Monday night as we talk to Dave Freeman from KSN in Wichita. Dave is a leader in studying how we can leverage the social sciences to make for better forecasts. Good weather is not enough. Forecasts must be understood, meet the users' needs, be accurate and reliable and have sufficient lead time. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, or try it out at www.WeatherBrains.com. Always free and always fun!

BLACK SATURDAY: One year ago today was the Black Saturday disaster in Australia. Wildfires ripped across more than 1,500 square miles of the country, destroying more than 1,800 farms and homes. Over 200 people were killed. It is the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter: www.twitter.com/wxhistorian.

...Snow Late In The Week?

Seems the term blizzard is out of vogue. We can't just have a good old fashioned blizzard anymore. It has to be a snowmageddon. Or a snowpocalypse. But the winter storm that blasted parts of the Mid-Atlantic states Friday night and Saturday lived up to the hype. It will go down in the record books as one of the biggest snowstorms in the history of Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore. 28.5 inches of snow at Philly was their second greatest ever. The 24.4 inches that fell at the BWI Airport is the second greatest single storm on record there. The 17.8 inch total at Reagan National Airport is the second highest total observed there and the fourth highest storm total in Washington history.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Sunshine returns today, which will be a welcome change. Cold air will continue to flow into Alabama from the north, which will keep temperatures on the cool side. Highs will be in the middle and upper 40s. Expect another light freeze tonight under partly cloudy skies.

EARLY WEEK SYSTEM: Monday will feature partly cloudy skies with highs back in the middle 50s, even an another disturbance forms to the west of Alabama. We could see a shower during the afternoon or evening, but rain will be more likely after midnight into Tuesday morning. Rainfall amounts will average three quarters to one inch. As colder air spills in on Tuesday, there could be a few snow flurries Tuesday afternoon and evening. Wednesday will feature clearing skies and chilly conditions. The weekdn will be dry with a fairly solid freeze both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: There has been no consistent agreement between the models on the late week system. Our main U.S. weather model has waffled back and forth on a more southerly track across the Gulf of Mexico, dragging the precipitation to the south of us in Central Alabama. The European model as been bullish on the idea of a snowfall for North and parts of Central Alabama on Friday. It will be interesting to see. For now, we will call for a chance of rain or snow late Thursday night into Friday for our area.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, Dave Freeman, from KSN in Wichita will be the Guest WeatherBrain. He will be joined by Andrea Butera, from WESH in Orlando. Dave will tell some amazing stories from the Greensburg, Kansas tornado, which devastated that town in Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.

RECORD WARMTH ACROSS THE SOUTH IN 1999: We tied our record in Birmingham with 76 degrees on this date in 1999. Huntsville shattered their old record high when the mercury reached 73 degrees, breaking the old record of 68. The morning low at Huntsville was 57, also establishing a record warm minimum for the date. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
