...Storms Next Week...

Skies became a little cloudier that we expected on Saturday,
especially across North Alabama. The clouds were generally debris
from showers located to the west of us that found themselves caught up
in northwesterly flow on the front side of a ridge over Texas. The
clouds even produced a few light sprinkles and some virga, which is
precipitation which evaporates before it reaches the ground. The
clouds acted a blanket for some spots overnight, keeping temperatures
a few degrees warmer than they would have been otherwise.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: High pressure at the surface is centered near Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina on this Sunday morning. It is maintaining a
broad southeasterly flow over the South. Aloft, we find ourselves
under a northwesterly flow aloft still, with the upper ridge still
centered from Nebraska down into northern Texas. A few clouds will
stream across the area from time to time in the upper flow today, but
we still should enjoy a good deal of sunshine.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: The upper ridge will shift eastward to start the
week. We should see plenty of sunshine on Monday, with just a few
clouds mixed in. Highs will be in the 70s both days. Lows will be in
the 40s Monday morning. Increasing southeasterly winds will send
moisture levels upward by Monday night and Tuesday, and lows Tuesday
morning will be in the lower 50s for the most part. To the west of
Alabama, a strong storm system will bring severe weather to areas from
Texas to North Dakota. This potential severe weather will shift into
the Arklatex on Tuesday as the powerful low lifts northward into the
Dakotas and Minnesota. There could be enough lift across Alabama to
produce a few showers during the day on Tuesday, but rain coverage and
amounts will be relatively low. By late Tuesday, the big upper t
rough to our west will be shifting our way, setting the stage for rain
and storms.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: The lumbering upper trough will push toward
Alabama, spinning up a surface low to our west. Showers and storms
will spread across the state on Wednesday. Most of the dynamics will
be well to our north by that time, but there still is a chance that we
could see some severe weather. The front will stall across the area
on Wednesday. More rain and storms will develop on Thursday, bringing
another dose of decent rainfall to the area. Again, there is some
potential for severe weather, but nothing looks significant for now.
The main event may come Friday and Saturday as a series of vigorous
surface lows develop along the front and move northeastward. Heavy
rain and severe weather will be possible.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Louisiana residents near the flooded
Mississippi River met with unwelcome visitors: snakes and alligators
displaced by the river. New Orleans officials warned joggers and
other visitors to the recreation area along Lake Ponchartrain to watch
out for the slithering reptiles. The river, at its highest level
since the 1927 flooding, sent residents to shelters and completely
surrounded the state prison at Angola, where prisoners labored to
shore up the last remaining levee with sandbags.

...A Black Day In Alabama Weather History...

March 21st is a day that will go down in infamy in our weather
history. It is the anniversary of the 1932 tornado outbreak that
killed 315 Alabamians. Tornadoes touched down near Demopolis at
midafternoon, followed by others near Linden and Faunsdale. Just
after 4 p.m., a major tornado struck Northport, killing 37 people. A
short time later, Cullman County came under attack, with a tornado
that killed 18 people around Phelan, Bolti, Berlin and Fairview. The
deadliest tornado of the day touched down in Perry County, and roared
into Chilton County. It killed 49 people. About 5:10 p.m.,
Columbiana in Shelby County was hit hard.

Meanwhile, to the southwest, a second Chilton County tornado was
paralleling the earlier one. This one would kill another 31 people.
Around sunset, even as people were cleaning up from the first tornado
of the day near Faunsdale, they watched in disbelief as another
tornado roared by. The terror continued into the evening. A twister
touched down near Gantt's Quarry and smashed into Sylacauga just after
7 p.m. killing 29. A second tornado passed close by the Marble City
an hour later. The final action of the deadly day happened in North
Alabama where deadly tornadoes skipped across Lawrence and Morgan
Counties, then hit Battle Ground in Cullman County. The final family
of tornadoes hit Jackson County, killing 32 people.

NICE WEATHER TO CONTINUE: Surface high pressure over the mid-
Atlantic states will continue to dominate our weather through the
early part of the week. By Monday, the high will drop further south
and begin an increasing southerly flow over Alabama and the Deep
South. Highs will range between 70-72. Lows will gradually warm from
the 40s into the 50s by Tuesday morning.

CHANGE ON THE HORIZON: A powerful upper trough will move onto the
West Coast on Sunday. A strong surface low will develop in the lee of
the Rockies by Monday morning. This low will conspire with a
favourable set of upper level conditions to produce a severe weather
threat Monday from Oklahoma to Nebraska. The threat will shift to the
Arkaltex Tuesday. We could see showers as early as Tuesday night.
Wednesday will feature a round of showers and storms ahead of a
weakening front. Showers will continue in the forecast on Thursday.
The chance of severe weather on Wednesday and Thursday looks remote as
the dynamics lift out to the north. Meanwhile, another stronger low
pressure system will form over the Texas Panhandle by Friday. As it
moves northeast, we will be in the warm sector on Friday and until the
cold front sweeps through on Saturday. There are signs that the
dynamics will be better over
Alabama Friday and Saturday, and this could be the period with the
best chance for severe weather.

CAN'T GIVE 'EM AWAY: KOCO in Oklahoma City reports that a Saline
County, Arkansas program that provides NOAA Weatheradios to residents
for free has not been very successful so far. Only 4.200 homes have
availed themselves of the offer, out of the 39,000 in the county. In
a county that has experienced several tornadoes in the past few years,
you would think they would be going like hotcakes. The program is
funded by a voluntary property tax contribution

ON THIS DATE IN 1968: :It rained for 36 straight hours in Memphis,
Tennessee, before the rain changed to snow and accumulated to 16.1
inches before ending 20 hours later. It was the second heaviest snow
ever recorded in Memphis. 17 inches fell in northern Mississippi, as
well as nine inches in Northwest Alabama.

I hate losing that hour of sleep, and we Weather Humans bemoan the
fact that we get the model output an hour closer to forecast deadline
time, but I have to admit that I adore Daylight Saving Time. Note
that it is Daylight Saving Time, and not Daylight Savings Time as I am
naturally prone to call it. But don't forget to make sure that you
have set your clock ahead one hour this morning, or you will be late
for church or whatever appointment you have. Except of course, if
your church has two services, you might end up just being early for
the late service.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: If we were basing the criteria for a Perfect
Weather Warning solely on the afternoon high temperature, today would
qualify, much like yesterday. Highs today will be in the upper 70s
with a decent southerly wind. But sunshine today will be in short
supply, so we will hold off on issuing a warning. Still, I think you
will like the final results in the weather department, despite the
mostly cloudy conditions. On the weather maps, an upper level
disturbance is ejecting out of the Southwest, headed toward the Plains
states. A long, snaky stationary front is draped across the middle
part of the country.
The upper disturbance will push the front toward Alabama, but a
stronger subtropical ridge will keep the boundary at bay until at
Wednesday. A few showers could break out this afternoon over mainly
Northwest Alabama, but rainfall amounts will be light and spotty at
best..

THE NEW WORK WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will still feature the
influence of the strong southerly flow, which will pump in a good
supply or warm and moist air over the Deep South. Highs will continue
in the 70s and overnight lows will be mild, in the 50s. This is well
above seasonal norms for Alabama in March. There will be small
chances of rain both Monday and Tuesday, but again, amounts will be
light and coverage spotty. By Wednesday, the front will make it into
Central Alabama, accompanied by showers and storms and a trend to
cooler. Rain will continue into the weekend if the front hangs
around, but forecast confidence is low.

ONE YEAR AGO: We prematurely rejoiced as snow fell across much of
Central Alabama, including the Birmingham area. We believed for
awhile that the snowless streak at the Birmingham Airport had been
broken. But it turned out that only a trace of snow fell at the
Airport, and that is not considered to be measurable snow. The
snowless streak was broken last week when three inches of snow fell
officially.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Brinkley AR was directly in the path of an F4
tornado during the evening. Eight hundred buildings and homes were
destroyed in the town and several entire families were killed. Forty
nine total fatalities were attributed to the twister along its 15 mile
path. Injuries numbered 600. At least six other major tornadoes
touched down in Arkansas that day, killing an additional eighteen
people.

...Cool Tonight and Mild Saturday...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Very dry air covers Alabama, so the NWS has a
Red Flag Warning for a number of counties for possible wildfires.
Another feature of very dry air is that it cools quickly at night and
warms quickly in daytime. The air was so dry that the dew point was in
the upper teens over the northern section and as low as 15 in the
Birmingham area. Translation: this means that we could see some
scattered light frost in the low-lying areas by daybreak even as far
south as the Birmingham area. We are calling for an average low of 40,
but places like Pinson and other valley locations, especially in NE
Alabama, could have some mid and upper 30s. A rapid warm up comes
Saturday to near 70 in the afternoon and another day of bright
sunshine. By early next week, highs should be in the low to mid 70s.

NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: We could see a few showers arriving Tuesday
night, but the better chance of showers and thunderstorms will be on
Wednesday. Some of those may still be around on Thursday and even a
few on Friday. During all of that time we may get around 1 inch of
rain, but we will estimate that more closely a little later.

In the clear, dry air last night, the temperature dropped to 33 at
Scrougout (in NE Etowah County) there was some scattered light frost.
It was 36 in Cullman and Vigo and 38 in Valley Head.

SNOW SURVEY: Only 14% of the lower 48 had a snow cover this morning
compared to 34% a month ago. Not counting the Rockies, you have to
travel all the way to North Dakota and the north half of Minnesota to
see a snow cover. That area is concerned about some significant
flooding due to some expected rain over the next several days and
temperatures in the 40s.

ROAMING: The hottest in the good old USA yesterday was 93 at Gila
Bend, Arizona. (That is pronounced Heela.) It is located in a bend of
the Gila River west of Phoenix, thus the name. Coldest this morning
was 7 at Doe Lake, Michigan. 43 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska with a wind
chill 65 below. Good old Deadhorse wind chill 66 below. 74 inches of
snow at Nome and 56 inches Whittier, Alaska.

LOOKING BACK: 77 years ago today the weather was sunny and tranquil
across Alabama. During that very early period of 1932, there was very
little indication of what was ahead. Next day on March 21, 1932, a
rash of major tornadoes in two waves destroyed communities in a number
of locations in Central and North Alabama. The death toll may have
been as high as 300 with 3,000 injured. We have a long story posted
about this on the 33/40 Weather Blog and Bill Murray will have a lot
more information over the weekend.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I wish I could wave a magic wand that
would insure Little Miss Molly stay a puppy all of her life. She will
be 6 years old later this year and I cannot tell any difference in her
energy level than the day she arrived. She does have a little more
white hair mixed in with the black. I guess you call that a salt and
pepper type. I wish I knew how many miles we have walked around the
half-mile track. It would amaze you. I tried to be real good to her.
The number two in Pets 10 Commandments says, Please give me time to
understand what you want of me. Thanks to Terri Yearty for that. The
number three says, Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my
wellbeing. Life goes on.

...First Official Day of Spring...

VERNAL EQUINOX: The spring season officially arrived at 6:44 this
morning, when the sun was directly over the equator on the journey
northward. We will have approximately 12 hours of daylight, and 12
hours of darkness today, a day with some pretty decent weather for mid
to late March. Temperatures will be cooler thanks to a dry cold front
that passed through late yesterday; the high today will be in the mid
to upper 60s. We will drop to near 40 degrees early tomorrow; some of
the colder valleys could reach the 30s with some potential for
scattered, light frost. The rest of the weekend will be rain-free,
with mostly sunny, pleasant days. Afternoon highs tomorrow and Sunday
will be generally in the 67 to 70 degree range, right at seasonal
averages.

NEXT WEEK: We should stay dry Monday and Tuesday, but wet weather
returns Wednesday and Thursday with a cold front drifting down into
our state. For now, the chance of a major severe weather problem looks
small, but rain totals of one inch or more will be possible. And, we
continue to see some evidence of a late season cold snap after that
rain event and the end of the month. Still too early to forecast the
coldest days and the extent of the freeze danger.

LATE SEASON COLD SNAPS ARE COMMON: April 23 is the latest that we have
ever had 32 degrees or lower at Birmingham and that was a low of 30 on
April 23, 1986. We have had a number of queries lately about when it
will be safe to plant vegetables and other items. Remember, these
figures are based on Birmingham Airport. Some of the outlying colder
valleys, especially in NE Alabama, could have frost later than that. I
figure we will have at least one or two more freeze threats between
now and mid-April.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: No watch and no warning were in effect when a
tornado struck the area around Gainesville, GA during the early
morning hours. Two schools and dozens of homes were in the path of the
fast moving twister that killed 14 people. Two other people were
killed in the late afternoon in Stoneville NC as a tornado heavily
damaged the business district of the town of 3,000 people. A little
over two weeks later, an F5 tornado would kill 32 people in the
western part of the Birmingham metro area on April 8.

TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN: This is flood safety week… flooding is the
Number 2 weather killer in the United States, ahead of tornadoes and
severe weather, and is the costliest weather-related disaster we face.
While much of the focus remains on thunderstorms and tornadoes,
flooding can often be an underrated killer. A variety of flooding and
related events place Central Alabama at risk throughout the year.
Flooding can result from a number of weather systems including slow-
moving or stationary frontal systems, inland moving tropical cyclones
and intense summertime thunderstorms. These systems can produce flash
flooding in low lying flood prone areas and along small creeks and
streams, as well as river flooding along mainstreams.

...Here Comes Another Front...

THE ALABAMA WEATHER SITUATION: Another cool front was crossing the
Tennessee River in extreme North Alabama early this afternoon. It will
push steadily southward and by daybreak it should be crossing the
Alabama/NW Florida beaches. This front is moisture starved, so we have
eliminated any mention of rain later today and this evening, although
you might see a sprinkle. We will have some temporary cloudiness with
the front, but clearing later tonight. After that we have it made for
at least 5 days in a row with no rain expected and some relatively
pleasant temperatures. The only possible exception is when you crawl
out of bed and go out to pick up the paper, you will experience some
low to mid 40s and even some upper 30s Saturday morning.
We do not foresee a significant rain event until the middle of next
week, mainly about next Wednesday, extending possibly into Thursday.
There could be some showers and thunderstorms during that time frame.

THE FROST SITUATION: A number of people have asked when it is safe to
plant. That can vary considerably on the topography around where you
live. At Birmingham Airport, the average date of the last temperature
freezing or lower is March 23, but it has occurred as late as April
23, 1986 when we had 30.
To show the variation, Vic Bell, the 33/40 Skywatcher for Scrougout,
has had the first frost as early as September 26 and the latest as
late as May 22. Scrougout is located in extreme NE Etowah County near
where DeKalb, Etowah and Cherokee Counties meet. While we are talking
about NE Alabama, there is a very small community called Noah on one
of the south arms of Weiss Lake. Does anyone know how it got that name?

BIG TORNADO ANNIVERSARY: It is coming up in only two days. It was
March 21, 1932 when about 300 people in Alabama were killed in a
number of vicious tornadoes that came in two waves, midafternoon and
after dark. Did you know that during one of those, a check was picked
up at Paint Rock in NE Alabama and it did not float to the ground
until 105 miles later in Athens, Tennessee.

SNOW COVER: The latest snow survey today shows that about 15% of the
lower 48 states has a snow cover. That compared to 36% a month ago
today. Except for the high country of the west, consistent snow cover
includes North Dakota, North Minnesota, extreme Northern Wisconsin,
Upper Michigan and from Upstate New York to Maine. No scarcity of snow
in Alaska where there is 75 inches on the ground at Nome and 57 inches
at Whittier. Another sign of
spring is the fact that the coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 1
below at Kadetogama, Minnesota. That is the warmest coldest
temperature in a long time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure is nice to go out and pick up the
morning paper before sunrise. There is a single bird that is singing
the same tune
at the same time every morning in a nearby tree. Little Miss Molly and
I had a very pleasant long walk. On her first walk, she insists on
taking her time. She checked out so many clumps of grass that her face
was wet with dew almost up to her eyeballs. Coming back down the
concrete walking track, two robins with their bright red breasts,
walked out of the hedgerow to check us out. Molly turned toward them
and they took off like a shuttle launch. We also passed a 4-inch worm
headed south breaking the speed limit. Little Miss Molly has taught me
to have a vivid, silly, out-of-control imagination. We surmised that
the worm was headed to Gulf Shores for Spring Break. It will take him
30 years. Life goes on.

...Mostly Dry Through Sunday...

COLD FRONT ARRIVES TODAY: Often in March, when a cold front blows
through Alabama you wind up dealing with issues like heavy rain,
severe storms, or tornadoes. That is not the case today, despite a
cold front passing through this afternoon. Due to limited moisture and
atmospheric lift, any showers on the front should be very isolated,
and mainly north of Birmingham. The chance of any one spot getting wet
is only about one in ten. Cooler air will follow the front late
tonight, and we should be in the low 40s early tomorrow.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Dry weather is the story with pleasant days
and cool nights. The high tomorrow and Saturday will be in the mid to
upper 60s, followed by a high close to 70 degrees on Sunday. We are
expecting a low near 40 degrees early Saturday, with 30s for the
normally colder places along with some risk of scattered light frost.
The dry weather will linger into the first two days of next week with
a slow warming trend.

NEXT MAJOR RAIN EVENT: The medium range global computer models
continue to suggest the next big rain event here will come over the
latter half of next week; for now it looks like a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday, with some
potential for strong thunderstorms. Much colder air will follow that
rain, and there will be some risk of a late season freeze sometime in
the March 27-29 time frame. A little too early to be specific at this
time, but we still believe it is too early for planting any crop that
could be damaged by freezing temperatures. While the average date of
the last freeze is March 23, we have seen freezing temperatures here
as late as April 23. We can have some sharp cold snaps well into April.

SPRING ARRIVES TOMORROW: Spring officially arrives at 6:44 a.m.
tomorrow, the time of the vernal equinox, when the sun is directly
above the earth's equator. During the equinox, the length of night and
day across the world is nearly, but not entirely, equal. This is
because the day is slightly longer in places that are further away
from the equator, and because the sun takes longer to rise and set in
these locations. Furthermore, the sun also does not set straight down,
but it also moves in a horizontal direction.

During the March equinox, the length of daylight is about 12 hours and
eight to nine minutes in areas that are about 30 degrees north or
south of the equator, while areas that are 60 degrees north or south
of the equator observe daylight for about 12 hours and 16 minutes.
Many regions around the equator have a daylight length about 12 hours
and six-and-a-half minutes during the March equinox.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that

...A Cold Front Passes Thursday...

VERY LITTLE RAIN IN OUR FORECAST: The excellent spring weather in
Alabama continues. The most exciting thing we can see now (and there
is very little excitement) is another cool front that will come down
the pike Thursday. It probably will not reach Central Alabama until
late morning and by Friday morning it will be down over the North Gulf
of Mexico.

Moisture is really limited. In fact, the North American Model only
indicates 0.01 for the few showers that will move through mostly in
the afternoon and evening. We think most areas will receive 1/10 of an
inch of rain or less.

THEN WHAT: More sunshine and pleasant temperatures Friday through the
weekend. There will be some cool nights, but afternoon highs should be
between 66 and 70. The coolest temperature should come Saturday
morning with lows across Central Alabama near 40, but for sure some
upper 30s in the cooler valleys. After this weekend, we may have
another round of showers, especially by next Wednesday.

SPRING BREAK AT THE BEACH: Generally excellent weather across the
Alabama/NW Florida coast. A lot more sunshine than clouds and few, if
any, showers. High temperatures will reach 78 tomorrow, then back off
some as the front reaches the area. Over the weekend, highs should be
around 70 and lows 52 to 55.

84 YEARS AGO TODAY: Awesome tornado disaster, mainly in the Midwest.
The tornado cut a 219-mile track from Missouri to Southern Indiana.
Over much of the track it was an F5 although they were not rated back
in those days. There were 695 fatalities and over 2,000 injuries. In
later years, it is believed that this was not a single tornado,
instead that one or more tornadoes formed from the same parent
thunderstorm.

THE GREAT NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Nome, Alaska is covered with 75
inches of snow and Whittier, Alaska 57 inches. Valdez has received an
amazing 244 inches this season. USA temperature extremes, 90 yesterday
at Laredo and Pecos, Texas, 11 this morning inside Yellowstone
National Park and 41 below zero at Nuiqsut, Alaska.

AIRBORNE CHECKS: With almost every significant tornado, we hear
reports later that checks have been found far NE of where the tornado
occurred, sometimes as much as 60 miles. But, would you believe in the
major tornado near Great Bend, Kansas way back in 1915, a cancelled
check from Great Bend was found in a cornfield near Palmyra, Nebraska
which is 305 miles to the NE. This is the longest distance that debris
has ever been carried.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Every morning when I take Little Miss
Molly for her long walk on the walking track, I never know what to
expect. This morning she had stopped to do her bathroom duties only to
glance up and see a neighbor 200 yards away walking toward us. She
immediately cancelled bathroom desires and started pulling me toward
him as fast as we could go. We stopped for a chat. A few yards later,
Molly tried to go to the bathroom again and saw the gentleman that
keeps the community grass cut, so she baled out again. A minute or two
later, the big black dog with the crooked tail came out of the
hedgerow and wanted to play. It took forever, but she enjoyed a treat
as a reward when we got home. Life goes on.

...Back Into The 70s This Afternoon...

SPECTACULAR SPRING WEATHER: While the official arrival of spring, the
vernal equinox, is still a couple of days away (it happens this year
at 6:44 a.m. CDT on March 20), those of us in the weather business
consider spring from the first day of March to the last day of May. It
will certainly look and feel like spring today with lots of sunshine
and a high in the mid 70s. About the only negative thing now is the
high pollen count, which will continue on through April.

COLD FRONT TOMORROW EVENING: We will continue to mention some risk of
isolated showers tomorrow afternoon and evening in response to a cold
front moving through, but moisture will be very limited, and the
dynamics are not especially impressive. Rainfall will be light and
spotty, and many places won't get enough rain to measure. All of the
showers will be out of here by midnight tomorrow night. In the wake of
the front, cooler air slips in here Friday with afternoon highs back
in the mid 60s. That cool air is also going to be very dry, so Friday
and the weekend will feature sunny days and clear nights. The coolest
morning will come at daybreak Saturday, when the colder valleys across
North and Central Alabama could reach the 30s with some risk of
scattered light frost. Most places will see a low close to 40 degrees.
Afternoon highs should be in the upper 60s Saturday, and close to 70
on Sunday.

VOODOO COUNTRY: Global computer models hint our next major rain event
will be in the March 26-27 time frame, but we all know there isn't
much skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days. It would not be
surprising to get another good rain event before the month is over
since March is usually our wettest month of the year.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest places in the nation yesterday were
both in Texas; the communities of Laredo and Pecos reported a high of
90. Very cold air has returned to Alaska; coldest spot in the nation
was Deadhorse, AK with -47.

BAMA SHAKER: A small magnitude 2.2 earthquake was centered near
Ragland in St. Clair County last night at 6:27 CDT… no damage but a
few folks felt it east of Birmingham.

ON THIS DATE IN 1925: The infamous Tri-State Tornado races 219 miles
across three states (Missouri, Illinois and Indiana) to become the
deadliest single tornado in U.S. history, leaving 695 people dead. 234
died at Murphrysboro IL (most tornado fatalities ever at a single
city) at 148 at West Frankfort IL. 200 people were seriously injured.
In some places the storm's path was one mile wide. 16 students in a
school at West Frankfort were left unharmed by the twister even though
the building was leveled and the children were blown 150 yards. Easily
an F5 tornado. Forward speed of twister was 73 mph at one point.

...What A Difference A Day Makes...

IDEAL SPRING WEATHER: One thing I like about this time of the year—you
do not have to sit around for days waiting for the weather to change.
It is different almost every day. The contrast between today and this
past weekend is as different as daylight and dark. After some fog
burned off this morning, the sky was sparkling clear, visibility was
unlimited and temperatures were plenty comfortable.

THE CHANCE OF RAIN: Just a small risk at some point later in the day
Thursday as another cold front comes marching down from the Upper
Midwest and Northern Plains. The front should enter the state early
Thursday and by next Friday morning it will be pushing into the
Northern Gulf of Mexico.
Our moisture supply is not going to have time to replenish enough to
cause a widespread rain event. Instead, we look for only isolated
showers on Thursday with clear weather returning for the weekend.
Enjoy temperatures in the low to mid 70s through Thursday and then
dropping into the 60s Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our coolest morning
should be Saturday with low 40s and some folks in the valleys will
have upper 30s.
That was the situation this morning, for example, 37 at Cullman Airport.

SPRING BREAK AT THE BEACH: Generally pleasant weather all the way
through the weekend and into early next week. We did not have any rain
in the forecast and it will be mostly sunshine every day. Highs will
be in the 70s until it turns a little cooler over the weekend and
drops back into the upper 60s.

WEATHER RADIO: The special offer from ABC 33/40 in cooperation with
Publix Supermarkets and Handy TV will get you a Midland weather radio
for only $29.95. They are digital, which means you can program any
counties you want to wake you up in the middle of the night.

UNRELATED THOUGHTS: Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge
while others only gurgle. I saw that on Twitter this morning. Good old
Deadhorse in Northern Alaska is hanging on to winter. It was 45 below
zero this morning with a wind chill of 67 below. Nuiqsut, Alaska had
47 below and a wind chill of 73 below. In the lower 48, it was 4 below
at Presque Isle, Maine. Still 21 inches of snow on the ground at
Caribou. Spokane does not have any snow on the ground now, but early
in the winter they really caught it. This season they have received
almost double their average amount.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I continue to be amazed at my little 9-
pound watchman and greeter and diplomat and almost every other
adjective you can think about. She absolutely insists on screening
people who come to the front door. I guess it is her built in
protective instinct like a lot of dogs have. If the doorbell rings and
she is upstairs in the sewing room, the patter of her little feet
coming down the stairs sounds like a machine gun. Then she turns the
corner on the tile floor around the kitchen table and often her feet
skid out from under her. In about 5 more leaps, she is at the front
door wagging her tail so fast that it is a blur. Life goes on.

...A Brighter and Warmer Day...

VERY NICE EARLY SPRING WEATHER: While dense fog is a good possibility
this morning as we start the day; we expect a good supply of sunshine
once that fog burns off. Temperatures will recover nicely, with highs
up in the mid 70s this afternoon. Look for similar weather tomorrow;
lots of sunshine with a high in the mid 70s.

COLD FRONT ON THURSDAY: A surface boundary will pass through Alabama
on Thursday; moisture will be very limited, but a few isolated showers
are possible along the front Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.
Rainfall should be light and spotty, and most places won't have enough
rain to measure. Cooler air follows the front, and temperatures on
Friday will be about 10 degrees cooler.

DRY WEEKEND: Sure looks like a delightful weekend ahead; a sunny sky
is expected Saturday and Sunday. The high Saturday will be in the
upper 60s, followed by low 70s Sunday. Morning temperatures will be in
the 40s, and some of the colder spots could reach the upper 30s early
Saturday morning.

LONG RANGE: The first few days of next week are looking dry; some of
the global models are hinting our next major rain event is about 10
days away, around March 27. But, we all know there isn't much skill in
a specific forecast beyond seven days. But, we must remember this is
the spring severe weather season, and storm events are usually pretty
frequent this time of the year.

ANOTHER FREEZE: I still think it is too early for planting anything
that will be harmed by freezing temperatures. The average date of the
last freeze here is March 23, but we have had freezing temperatures as
late as April 23. A late season cold snap is just about a given,
although at this time we don't see any sub-freezing temperatures for
the next 7 days or so.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: A: The ban on using the word "tornado" was
actually issued in 1886 and ended in 1952. In the 1880s John P. Finley
of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, which then handled weather forecasting
for the USA, developed generalized forecasts on which days tornadoes
were most likely. But in 1886 the Army ended Finley's program and
banned the word "tornado" from forecasts because "the harm done by a
(tornado) prediction would eventually be greater than that which
results form the tornado itself." The thinking was that people would
be trampled in the panic if they heard a tornado was possible. The ban
stayed in place after the Weather Bureau, now the National Weather
Service, took over forecasting from the Army. A tornado that wrecked
52 large aircraft at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., on March 20, 1948,
spurred Air Force meteorologists to begin working on ways to forecast
twisters. The Weather Bureau also began looking for ways to improve
tornado forecasts and established the Severe Local Storm Warning
Center, which is now the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. The
ban on the word "tornado" fell on March 17, 1952 when the new center
issued its first "tornado watch."

...Sunshine Returns Tomorrow...

HEADED FOR SOME PLEASANT WEATHER: Two rain events in the last few
days have given Alabama a general soaking. The two events produced as
much as 4 inches of rain in parts of the state and almost every
community received 1 inch or more. The nice part about all of this, it
was a steady rain lasting for hours on end in most communities giving
the rain time to soak in instead of running off into the nearest ditch
and creek. The topsoil across the state should be in great condition
now as far as moisture is concerned.

By midafternoon today, the rain had ended over extreme North Alabama.
It was still widespread across Central and South Alabama including
some heavy rains near the coast. The low-pressure are that formed over
the NW Gulf of Mexico several days ago was over South Georgia this
afternoon. The cold front involved with all of this extended from near
New Orleans eastward across South Alabama. The rain should gradually
taper off and end over the rest of Alabama tonight.

As it does, clouds will break up allowing some patchy dense fog to
form. That fog will get away fairly early tomorrow morning and most of
the state should have sunny weather and warmer temperatures. That
sunny weather will continue with pleasant temperatures on Wednesday.
Highs will be in the mid 70s and lows at night in the upper 40s. By
Thursday, another cool front will push into the state. It will reach
North Florida by Friday morning. There is a small risk of a few
showers Thursday as it turns cooler again with highs in the 60s. By
Friday morning, it should be near 40 across Central Alabama with some
upper 30s in the cooler North Alabama valleys.

RECENT RAIN AMOUNTS: Just in the last 24 hours, here are a few rain
amounts around the state:

0.90 Mobile Regional Airport
0.42 Birmingham Airport
0.41 Anniston
1.65 Montgomery Dannelly Field

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Some parts of Texas got some good rain in the
last few days, but almost the entire state is under some type of
drought, including an exceptional drought over part of Central and SE
Texas. Dry conditions also in Georgia and the Carolinas. Columbus,
Georgia got 3.46 inches of rain the last 24 hours. Troy, in SE
Alabama, got 3.09. What a change for NE Minnesota where temperatures
will be well into the 50s this afternoon over a heavy snow pack. Could
be some flooding. Good old Deadhorse, Alaska, always something
interesting. It was 43 below zero today with a wind chill 72 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little girl disrupted my sleep three
times during the night making me get up and bring her back to bed. I
have about decided we need to put earmuffs on her at night. Her
hearing is as good as any creature in the world. Last night she could
hear an outside drainpipe because of the rain and our grandkids, who
like to stay up most of the night, were making just enough noise in
the living area for her to stand by the bedroom door ready to zoom
out. Glad I got a lot of power naps yesterday. I am well rested.
Little Miss Molly is getting a lot of naps today to make up for the
interruptions last night. Life goes on.

...Drier Weather Ahead...

This morning's forecast package is brought to you by…the Space
Shuttle. What an incredible sight last evening to watch the
spectacular launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. We were staked out
on Cocoa Beach for the 7:45 p.m. EDT liftoff. With the sun having
just set, the plume left behind the orbiter was truly spectacular.
When you think of everything that goes into making a mission like this
work, and see the cooperation between nations in the International
Space Station, it gives you hope. Hats off to the men and women of
NASA for a job well done.

FINAL ROUND OF RAIN: Rain began forming over Southeast Texas late
Sunday afternoon. It spread northeast during the evening and reached
western Alabama about 9 p.m. A strong upper disturbance and surface
low are responsible for the overnight rains. After the main rain area
moves into Georgia early this morning, there could still be a few
showers through the afternoon hours as the upper trough slides
across. There are still indications that there could be some sunshine
late in the day. Skies should clear early tonight, which may allow
low clouds and fog to form after midnight.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: A ridge of high pressure will build into Alabama
by Tuesday, allowing sunshine to return. Tuesday and Wednesday will
feature highs in the 70s, which is nearly perfect springlike weather,
even though spring doesn't arrive officially until this coming
Friday. Another trough will approach Alabama on Thursday, pushing a
cold front our way. Showers will accompany the front as it passes
through the area. Slightly cooler and drier air will enter the state
behind the front as high pressure builds in. Some parts of North
Alabama may flirt with a light freeze by Saturday morning. Weekend
highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Lows will be in the
comfortable 40s.

BEACHES/MOUNTAINS: Many Alabama families are on Spring Break from
school this week. Lots of folks have already headed to the beaches of
Alabama and Northwest Florida. So far, they have likely been
disappointed in the weather, but they can take heart as things will be
improving. As I always say anyway, any day at the beach is better
than a day just about anywhere else. Rain will end along the Gulf
Coast later today. By tomorrow, afternoon highs will be in the 70s
again. Lows will be in the 50s. In the mountains of North Carolina
and eastern Tennessee, sunshine will return for Tuesday and
Wednesday. Highs will be in the 60s, with lows in the 40s. Showers
will be possible on Thursday as a front approaches. Highs by then
will back off into the 50s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1843: A great snowstorm occurred from the Gulf of
Mexico to Maine. Eight inches of snow fell in Little Rock. Ten
inches fell in Memphis and Washington. Twelve inches was recorded in
Baltimore, New York City and Philadelphia. The town of Shelbyville,
Tennessee received twenty one inches. Four inches fell as far south as
Natchez, Mississippi.

...One More Round of Rain...
Rain overspread Alabama again during the overnight. Rainfall amounts
were generally light again with this second round of rain, but some
heavier showers did dump some respective hourly amounts. At the
Birmingham Airport, between midnight and 1 a.m., 0.43 inches of rain
fell. The rain totals had been disappointing at Birmingham through
much of Saturday (we had been expecting as much as three inches of
rain through the weekend, and amounts had been well short of that
until last night. The Birmingham rain total for the past three days
stands at 2.06 inches.

DROUGHT: Someone asked if there was any drought left given all the
rain that we have experienced lately. Much of North Central Alabama
is in good shape now, from the I-59 corridor northward up to the
Tennessee Valley. The northern tier of counties is now officially
listed as abnormally dry. The entire southeastern two thirds of the
state is now at least abnormally dry. An axis of moderate drought
extends from Montgomery through Macon and Lee Counties. Parts of
Mobile and Baldwin Counties are in a moderate drought situation.

OUR FORECAST: A weak surface low is located in South Alabama late
this morning. It is lifting a warm front northward across Southeast
Alabama and South Georgia. Behind it, a cold front trails to near
Mobile and into the Gulf. The upper features drive our weather, and
the object causing our current weather traffic jam is a big high
pressure system up at about 18,000 feet over Cuba, South Florida and
the Bahamas. To the west, the main upper level disturbance was
swinging out of Oklahoma and Texas. It will produce one more round of
rain overnight and early tomorrow morning before sweeping out the
moisture Monday afternoon. This will then set the stage for a nice
week, with mainly dry and springlike conditions expected. Another
trough and frontal system will swing our way on Thursday, but rain
chances look small, and it will only be slightly cooler behind this
system.

SPACE SHUTTLE FORECAST: Forecasting the weather for Space Shuttle
launches and landings is a critical part of the process. The weather
rules for a shuttle launch are very clear and the launch weather
officer and her team will call for a no-go if any of them are
violated. Fortunately for us hoping to watch the Shuttle lift off
tonight at 07:43:46 p.m. EDT, the meteorologists say there is an 80%
of acceptable weather conditions at launch time. The main concern is
for a slight chance of a low cloud ceiling at Kennedy Space Center.
Two transatlantic abort landing (TAL) sites are forecast to have
acceptable weather today. Only one TAL site is required to be "go."
There are no weather concerns at the alternate landing site at Edwards
Air Force Base in California.

ON THIS DATE IN 1716: The aurora borealis was conspicuously absent in
skies over Europe between 1645-1715. In fact, not a single aurora
borealis was observed by Royal Astronomers between 1645 and 1708. The
absence of the beautiful glowing displays in the night sky was caused
by a lack of solar activity during that time. Astronomer E. W.
Maunder pointed out the sunspot minimum between 1645 and 1715. It is
named for him: the Maunder Minimum. The lack of solar activity
probably contributed to the global cooling that led to the Little Ice
Age, a period of cooling that lasted from 1400 until 1850.
