...Drier Weather Ahead...
This morning's forecast package is brought to you by…the Space
Shuttle. What an incredible sight last evening to watch the
spectacular launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. We were staked out
on Cocoa Beach for the 7:45 p.m. EDT liftoff. With the sun having
just set, the plume left behind the orbiter was truly spectacular.
When you think of everything that goes into making a mission like this
work, and see the cooperation between nations in the International
Space Station, it gives you hope. Hats off to the men and women of
NASA for a job well done.
FINAL ROUND OF RAIN: Rain began forming over Southeast Texas late
Sunday afternoon. It spread northeast during the evening and reached
western Alabama about 9 p.m. A strong upper disturbance and surface
low are responsible for the overnight rains. After the main rain area
moves into Georgia early this morning, there could still be a few
showers through the afternoon hours as the upper trough slides
across. There are still indications that there could be some sunshine
late in the day. Skies should clear early tonight, which may allow
low clouds and fog to form after midnight.
TUESDAY AND BEYOND: A ridge of high pressure will build into Alabama
by Tuesday, allowing sunshine to return. Tuesday and Wednesday will
feature highs in the 70s, which is nearly perfect springlike weather,
even though spring doesn't arrive officially until this coming
Friday. Another trough will approach Alabama on Thursday, pushing a
cold front our way. Showers will accompany the front as it passes
through the area. Slightly cooler and drier air will enter the state
behind the front as high pressure builds in. Some parts of North
Alabama may flirt with a light freeze by Saturday morning. Weekend
highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Lows will be in the
comfortable 40s.
BEACHES/MOUNTAINS: Many Alabama families are on Spring Break from
school this week. Lots of folks have already headed to the beaches of
Alabama and Northwest Florida. So far, they have likely been
disappointed in the weather, but they can take heart as things will be
improving. As I always say anyway, any day at the beach is better
than a day just about anywhere else. Rain will end along the Gulf
Coast later today. By tomorrow, afternoon highs will be in the 70s
again. Lows will be in the 50s. In the mountains of North Carolina
and eastern Tennessee, sunshine will return for Tuesday and
Wednesday. Highs will be in the 60s, with lows in the 40s. Showers
will be possible on Thursday as a front approaches. Highs by then
will back off into the 50s.
ON THIS DATE IN 1843: A great snowstorm occurred from the Gulf of
Mexico to Maine. Eight inches of snow fell in Little Rock. Ten
inches fell in Memphis and Washington. Twelve inches was recorded in
Baltimore, New York City and Philadelphia. The town of Shelbyville,
Tennessee received twenty one inches. Four inches fell as far south as
Natchez, Mississippi.
