...Fine May Weather To Continue...

Hello from the Texas Panhandle. Your afternoon weather package is
being brought to you from the city of Amarillo. Home to 183,000
people, this growing city is known as the Helium Capital of the World
because of its helium production. Taking its name from the Spanish
word for yellow, it is also known as "the Yellow Rose of Texas." The
climate is "semi-arid, temperate steppe."

A GORGEOUS SATURDAY: A beautiful morning across the area this
morning, with more in store as we head deeper into our Saturday. Some
folks got up to some dense fog early this morning, especially over
West Alabama, where visibilities dropped to less than a quarter of a
mile. It was a great morning to be flying with beautifully clear
skies, but a lacework pattern of white stratus hugging the ground in
spots to the west of Birmingham.

SHOWERS ON SUNDAY: Up at about 18,000 feet, we still have a big
upper low over the Upper Great Lakes and a trough over the eastern
half of the country. A disturbance rotating through the trough will
pass over us on Sunday, bringing a weak cold front. This front will
cloud things up tomorrow and bring a chance of showers during the
afternoon. There could also be a little thunder, but don't expect
much. After lows in the middle 50s, afternoon temperatures will warm
into the upper 70s. The system should pass quickly, giving way to
partly cloudy conditions Sunday night.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like a fine day, with a good supply of
sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s. The upper trough is still
there by Tuesday, and the models have consistently portrayed another
passing disturbance for late Tuesday with another round of showers and
perhaps an isolated storm. The upper pattern begins to change by
Wednesday and we come under the influence of a ridge of high
pressure. The Gulf is open for business by Thursday with a powerful
low to our west, so it will get breezy, and we will see nice coverage
of afternoon and evening showers and storms (some strong) Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. Rain and storm chances could be enhanced on
Saturday by a back door cold front trying to slide in from the east.
We will see warm and humid conditions through this period.

WET MID-ATANTIC: Things have been damp across the Mid-Atlantic states
this month. Baltimore has already logged 6.73 inches of rain in the
first 16 days of the month, well on their way to beating the previous
record of 8.71 inches. They have already seen three daily rainfall
records fall this month.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Allied Supreme Commander Eisenhower made the
decision on this date to launch the Allied Invasion of France on June
5, 1944. The most important factor related to favorable tides and
moonlight conditions. But almost as important were the weather
conditions. In April and May, weather conditions over the English
Channel were unusually fine. Climatologically, conditions in June
were expected to be the best, but June 1944 would see storms of
unusual severity across the invasion area. The weather forecast that
led to postponing the actual invasion date until June 6th would prove
to be a masterpiece. A brief lull in the stormy weather allowed the
invasion to commence, much to the surprise of the Germans, who thought
the weather too inclement.

...Gorgeous Saturday...

A beautiful day is in store for us here in Central
Alabama with ample sunshine, low humidities and highs in the upper
70s. Most spots are starting off around 50, with a few lucky
locations in the 40s. This is just about perfect weather for Central
Alabama. Tonight will feature clear skies with comfortable readings
in the 50s. In the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, we will
continue to see a trough of low pressure over the eastern United
States. We will be on the backside of that trough, keeping us a
little on the cool side into midweek. No big rainfall amounts are
expected until the end of the week.

SPOTTY SUNDAY SHOWERS: On the backside of the trough, a
passing disturbance will spread a few clouds and perhaps a few showers
into Alabama on Sunday, but the chance of rain at any one location
will be small and rainfall amounts small. Highs will be below normal
for this time of year, in the middle and upper 70s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Not much confidence in the models based
on their recent consistency, or lack thereof. Another disturbance
will slide by on Tuesday, pushing another weak front through Alabama.
It will be accompanied by a few showers again. By the Wednesday, the
pattern will begin to change. The upper trough will depart to the
northeast and a ridge will build over the Southeast. Meanwhile, an
intense low pressure system will develop over the Plains. Thursday
should be a breezy and mild day with a few showers developing. A
powerful tug of war will set up by Friday between a ridge of high
pressure to the east and the low over the central part of the
country. It looks like we will be in the battle zone on Friday, with
a good chance of showers and storms. We should stay warm, humid and
showery through Memorial Day and into the next week. After midweek, a
powerful high pressure system will spread cooler and drier air into
the Southeast.

HURRICANE NAMES RETIRED: The World Meteorological
Organization has retired Dean, Felix and Noel from the seven year list
of Atlantic hurricane names. Dean was a Category Five hurricane that
struck the Yucatan in August. Since 1851, there had never been two
landfalling Category Five hurricanes. That changed on September 4th
when Felix struck Nicaragua, killing 130 people. Hurricane Noel did
most of its death and destruction before it even became a hurricane.
Its flooding rains caused 160 fatalities in the Dominican Republic,
Haiti, Jamaica and the Bahamas. A total of 66 Atlantic tropical
storms and hurricanes have had their names retired. Notice I said
tropical storms. Actually, it was one tropical storm that has its
name retired: Allison in 2001. The tropical storm caused $5.4 billion
in damage as it looped across Texas and Louisiana causing tremendous
flooding. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began Thursday. The
Atlantic season begins June 1st.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Hawaii records its coldest
temperature ever (12F) at Mauna Key Observatory which is 13,770 feet
above sea level. Hawaii is the only state in the United States
that has not recorded below zero temperatures.

...A Soaked Alabama...

NO DUST STORMS TODAY: It appears that every square mile of Alabama
has wet soil today. Extensive rain spread east across the state
beginning before daybreak yesterday. By last night, the rain had moved
east into Georgia. Extreme South Alabama did not get much. However,
this morning a broad zone of heavy showers and thunderstorms moved
ashore and produced very heavy rain over Mobile and Baldwin Counties
that amounted to several inches in a short time. This afternoon, most
of that rain had shifted eastward into North Florida and South Georgia.

Meanwhile, cool weather was the story across the rest of
Alabama today as clouds hung on stubbornly after the big storm system.
Those clouds should gradually break up late today and tonight and much
of the state should be mostly clear by tomorrow morning. With much
drier air spreading into the state, we are still looking for a low of
49 across Central Alabama at daybreak. Saturday should be very
pleasant with upper 70s for a high and with lower humidity.

We have introduced a chance of a shower or thunderstorm
on Sunday as a disturbance passes north of the state. It does not look
like an all-day rain and probably the better chance will be in the
afternoon. Later we may have to also include some showers and
thunderstorms about next Tuesday, but until the picture becomes
clearer, we left them out.

RAIN AMOUNTS: We will not repeat a long list of rain
amounts from yesterday. They were extensive and very encouraging and a
big enemy for any drought. Please go to the ABC 33/40
Weather Blog and you will see two long lists. Numerous communities got
well over 1 inch and several places in West Alabama got over 3 inches.

THE BIRMINGHAM SURPLUS: Yes, we said surplus. That word
almost sounds strange after carrying a deficit most of last year and
part of this year. As of this morning, the 2008 total at Birmingham
Airport was 24.71 inches, an excess of 1.88. That is nearly 2-1/2
times more rain than we had received on this same date a year ago.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: 8.39 inches of rain at Liverpool,
Louisiana from these latest storms…temperatures will be as high as 92
in NW Washington tomorrow, including the normally cool Seattle area…
San Francisco had 97 yesterday…extremes in the last 24 hours: 109 in
Death Valley and 25 this morning in Alamosa, Colorado and in
Yellowstone National Park…it was 16 in Deadhorse, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A most pleasant early walk with my pal,
Little Miss Molly, this morning. It was pleasantly cool. About two
doors away, Molly heard a muffled bark because the dog was inside the
house. Only thing—Molly did not know which house, so she ordered me to
stop at the edge of the backyard of the next three houses so she could
plop down and wait for the dog to come out. It never happened. The Old
Crow Motel looks better than it has in several years. Maybe it was
hungry for rain. Even the Old Crow Creek had a nice flow this morning.
The whole countryside is lush and green. Life goes on.

...A Nice Spring Weekend Ahead...

DRIER WEATHER: Drier air will slowly work into Alabama today, and most
communities will be rain-free. The clearing process will be rather
slow, however, as some low level moisture will remain trapped in the
lower 5,000 feet of the atmosphere. The sun should begin to break out
in spots this afternoon, and by tonight we will be generally clear as
the dry air takes over. Any lingering showers today should be
generally confined to the southern half of the state.

THE WEEKEND: Tomorrow looks like a beautiful day, with a good supply
of sunshine and a high in the mid to upper 70s following a rather
chilly morning for mid-May. A disturbance will bring some scattered
clouds to the state on Sunday, but the low levels will remain dry, and
at this point the chance of significant rain looks relatively small,
although we can't rule out a shower in isolated spots. The high Sunday
will be in the upper 70s, a few degrees below average for this time of
the year.

A quick peek at next week reveals the best chance of rain should come
during the latter half of the week, perhaps on Thursday or Friday.
Long range model data shows a summer-like pattern by Memorial Day
weekend, with warm and muggy conditions and just a few scattered,
mainly afternoon showers or storms.

SOAKED: A year ago today, Birmingham Airport had received a mere 9.68
inches of rain and we were showing a deficit of over 13 inches! By
yesterday afternoon, Birmingham had received 1.82 inches, bringing our
2008 total to 24.70, a SURPLUS of 1.87. Nobody complaining about that
for sure. Some of the heavier rain totals yesterday included: 3.80" at
the Tuscaloosa Airport, 3.07" at Northwood Lake (near Northport),
2.93" at Pleasant Grove, 2.74" in Hoover (near Spain Park High
School), 2.60" at Alexander City, 2.54" at Inverness, 2.50" at the ABC
33/40 Studio in
Riverchase, 2.40" in the Russet Woods section of Hoover, 2.37" at
Greystone Farms, 2.14" at Marion, 2.13" in Helena, 1.88" at Jemison,
1.82" at the Birmingham Airport, 1.73" at Trussville, and
1.56" at Pell City.

It is interesting to note that despite the heavy rain in Tuscaloosa
yesterday, a rain deficiency for the year of 1.69" still exists. The
official rain total for Anniston was 1.69", but they still have a
deficiency of 3.18".

A few tornado warnings were issued for counties in South Alabama
yesterday, but no significant damage was reported. There was no severe
weather across North Alabama due to the stable, rain-cooler air.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Death Valley, CA with 109 degrees. Coldest spots were both in Alaska;
Atqasuk and Point Lay reported a low of 21 degrees. A flood warning is
in effect today for the Sucarnoochee River at Livingston (Alabama),
where some flooding of pastures is expected.

WHAT A SOAKING: If you lived in certain parts of the state, that is.
The extreme northern section of Alabama did not get that much rain
this morning, but much of Central and South Alabama got a good
soaking. Across the Tennessee Valley, amounts were closer to ¼ to ½
inch. A few of the heavier rain totals:

1.81 Moody
1.38 Springville/Simmons Mountain
2.14 Marion
3.39 Tuscaloosa Airport
1.56 Birmingham Airport
1.69 Shelby County Airport
1.07 Anniston Airport

We were especially glad to see Anniston get that much rain,
because they were running a deficit of around 4 inches. The heavy rain
in Birmingham today means the city now has a surplus of 1.75 inches.

The roughest weather today was down state where a Tornado Watch was
in effect for the extreme south. There were a number of Tornado
Warnings, but we do not have confirmed reports of major damage.

NOW WHAT? The low-pressure area and cold front were still to our
west and NW this afternoon, so there could be a few more showers this
evening. By daybreak, the cool front will be pushing through Central
Alabama and after that we expect dry weather on through the weekend.
Clouds will be breaking up tomorrow leaving almost all sunshine and
pleasant temperatures for Saturday. We believe Sunday and Monday will
be rain free with highs near 80. Look for some very pleasant
temperatures at daybreak Saturday with a low of about 49.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: The Southeast U.S. sure got a soaking in many areas
over the last two or three days…extremely heavy rain from East Texas,
across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and into Alabama today…the
Meridian area, in East Mississippi, was drenched with 4.28 inches of
rain this morning. Jackson received 2.04 and much of Central and East
Mississippi got 2 to 4 inches this morning…but, the prize winner is
still the Shreveport area where more than 10 inches fell during the
storm causing massive flash flooding…cold temperatures this morning
included 27 at Doe Lake, Spincich Lake and Raco all in Michigan…106
was the hot spot yesterday in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Yesterday was the most exciting day my
little 9-pound pal has had since she walked in our door nearly 6 years
ago and instantly won me over. On an early walk yesterday, she got to
see her ex-boyfriend Jo-Jo who she wanted to marry. We had not seen
him in 6 months, so Molly fell in love with a new doggy on the block
named Dino. He is a beautiful little Yorkie and he and Molly dearly
love each other. He passed by twice yesterday raising Molly's blood
pressure to the top. Meanwhile, some neighborhood kids were walking
their very large dog using only a collar. They rang our doorbell and
asked to borrow Molly's leash until they could get her home. Molly
always answers the doorbell like it is the end of the world and when
she saw that big dog, nose to nose, looking through the window this
would be her demise either from a stroke or heart attack. It went from
bad to worse. When she saw the big dog leave with her own leash, it is
the most upset I have ever seen her. Took a long time to calm her
down. Life goes on--never a dull moment with my little pal........
