...Fine May Weather To Continue...
Hello from the Texas Panhandle. Your afternoon weather package is
being brought to you from the city of Amarillo. Home to 183,000
people, this growing city is known as the Helium Capital of the World
because of its helium production. Taking its name from the Spanish
word for yellow, it is also known as "the Yellow Rose of Texas." The
climate is "semi-arid, temperate steppe."
A GORGEOUS SATURDAY: A beautiful morning across the area this
morning, with more in store as we head deeper into our Saturday. Some
folks got up to some dense fog early this morning, especially over
West Alabama, where visibilities dropped to less than a quarter of a
mile. It was a great morning to be flying with beautifully clear
skies, but a lacework pattern of white stratus hugging the ground in
spots to the west of Birmingham.
SHOWERS ON SUNDAY: Up at about 18,000 feet, we still have a big
upper low over the Upper Great Lakes and a trough over the eastern
half of the country. A disturbance rotating through the trough will
pass over us on Sunday, bringing a weak cold front. This front will
cloud things up tomorrow and bring a chance of showers during the
afternoon. There could also be a little thunder, but don't expect
much. After lows in the middle 50s, afternoon temperatures will warm
into the upper 70s. The system should pass quickly, giving way to
partly cloudy conditions Sunday night.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like a fine day, with a good supply of
sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s. The upper trough is still
there by Tuesday, and the models have consistently portrayed another
passing disturbance for late Tuesday with another round of showers and
perhaps an isolated storm. The upper pattern begins to change by
Wednesday and we come under the influence of a ridge of high
pressure. The Gulf is open for business by Thursday with a powerful
low to our west, so it will get breezy, and we will see nice coverage
of afternoon and evening showers and storms (some strong) Thursday,
Friday and Saturday. Rain and storm chances could be enhanced on
Saturday by a back door cold front trying to slide in from the east.
We will see warm and humid conditions through this period.
WET MID-ATANTIC: Things have been damp across the Mid-Atlantic states
this month. Baltimore has already logged 6.73 inches of rain in the
first 16 days of the month, well on their way to beating the previous
record of 8.71 inches. They have already seen three daily rainfall
records fall this month.
ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Allied Supreme Commander Eisenhower made the
decision on this date to launch the Allied Invasion of France on June
5, 1944. The most important factor related to favorable tides and
moonlight conditions. But almost as important were the weather
conditions. In April and May, weather conditions over the English
Channel were unusually fine. Climatologically, conditions in June
were expected to be the best, but June 1944 would see storms of
unusual severity across the invasion area. The weather forecast that
led to postponing the actual invasion date until June 6th would prove
to be a masterpiece. A brief lull in the stormy weather allowed the
invasion to commence, much to the surprise of the Germans, who thought
the weather too inclement.
