ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's
safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small
projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Gorgeous Saturday...

A beautiful day is in store for us here in Central
Alabama with ample sunshine, low humidities and highs in the upper
70s. Most spots are starting off around 50, with a few lucky
locations in the 40s. This is just about perfect weather for Central
Alabama. Tonight will feature clear skies with comfortable readings
in the 50s. In the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, we will
continue to see a trough of low pressure over the eastern United
States. We will be on the backside of that trough, keeping us a
little on the cool side into midweek. No big rainfall amounts are
expected until the end of the week.

SPOTTY SUNDAY SHOWERS: On the backside of the trough, a
passing disturbance will spread a few clouds and perhaps a few showers
into Alabama on Sunday, but the chance of rain at any one location
will be small and rainfall amounts small. Highs will be below normal
for this time of year, in the middle and upper 70s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Not much confidence in the models based
on their recent consistency, or lack thereof. Another disturbance
will slide by on Tuesday, pushing another weak front through Alabama.
It will be accompanied by a few showers again. By the Wednesday, the
pattern will begin to change. The upper trough will depart to the
northeast and a ridge will build over the Southeast. Meanwhile, an
intense low pressure system will develop over the Plains. Thursday
should be a breezy and mild day with a few showers developing. A
powerful tug of war will set up by Friday between a ridge of high
pressure to the east and the low over the central part of the
country. It looks like we will be in the battle zone on Friday, with
a good chance of showers and storms. We should stay warm, humid and
showery through Memorial Day and into the next week. After midweek, a
powerful high pressure system will spread cooler and drier air into
the Southeast.

HURRICANE NAMES RETIRED: The World Meteorological
Organization has retired Dean, Felix and Noel from the seven year list
of Atlantic hurricane names. Dean was a Category Five hurricane that
struck the Yucatan in August. Since 1851, there had never been two
landfalling Category Five hurricanes. That changed on September 4th
when Felix struck Nicaragua, killing 130 people. Hurricane Noel did
most of its death and destruction before it even became a hurricane.
Its flooding rains caused 160 fatalities in the Dominican Republic,
Haiti, Jamaica and the Bahamas. A total of 66 Atlantic tropical
storms and hurricanes have had their names retired. Notice I said
tropical storms. Actually, it was one tropical storm that has its
name retired: Allison in 2001. The tropical storm caused $5.4 billion
in damage as it looped across Texas and Louisiana causing tremendous
flooding. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began Thursday. The
Atlantic season begins June 1st.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Hawaii records its coldest
temperature ever (12F) at Mauna Key Observatory which is 13,770 feet
above sea level. Hawaii is the only state in the United States
that has not recorded below zero temperatures.
