....Warm Up Ahead...

It was a chilly morning across the area this morning. Temperatures
were in the lower and middle 30s across much of the area, with a few
of the normally colder locations going below freezing. Readings were
in the 40s at noon across much of the Tennessee Valley and Northeast
Alabama, a bit colder than was expected. Most areas will top out in
the lower and middle 50s across Central Alabama.

REMAINDER OF WEEKEND: Skies will be partly cloudy tonight as some
high clouds move across the region in a northwesterly flow. The clouds
may help to keep temperatures up a bit, but the clouds are going to be
high in the atmosphere, so the blanketing effect will not be as great.
Look for readings around or just above freezing tonight with a few
places colder. Tomorrow looks cool again, with highs in the 60 degree
range along with patchy high clouds at times.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Things will be warming back up by Monday as a
southerly flow develops over Alabama. Temperatures will edge back up
to near 70 degrees. Skies should be partly cloudy Monday and Tuesday.
By late on Tuesday, a developing storm system to the west of Alabama
will be trying to edge into the area. But it appears that stubborn
high pressure to our east will keep it at bay. We might see a few
showers in Central Alabama on Wednesday. The front should go back
north as a warm front and keep us in a mild, moist regime after
Wednesday. A big upper low to our west will produce showers and
storms that will reach us finally late on Saturday. Look for another
storm system right before the end of the month.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Denver's Stapleton Airport picked up 31.8
inches of snow from a tremendous blizzard that ended a significant
drought across Wyoming and Colorado. It was the most snow from a
single storm in the Mile High City since 1913. The 19 inches that
fell at DIA tore the terminal's roof.

BANNING THE WORD TORNADO: In the 1880s, U.S. Army Signal Corps
Officer John P. Finley developed generalized forecasts. The country
was divided into grid sections and daily forecasts issued as to
whether tornadoes were likely. The Signal Corps handled weather
forecasting for the USA then. But in 1886 the Army ended Finley's
program and banned the word "tornado" from forecasts because "the harm
done by a (tornado) prediction would eventually be greater than that
which results form the tornado itself." The thinking was that people
would be trampled in the panic if they heard a tornado was possible.
The ban stayed in place after the Weather Bureau, now the National
Weather Service, took over forecasting from the Army. On March 20,
1948, a destructive tornado at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma spurred Air
Force meteorologists to begin working on ways to forecast twisters.
The Weather Bureau also began looking for ways to alert the public
about tornadoes. They established the Severe Local Storm Warning
Center, which is now the Storm Prediction Center. The ban on the word
"tornado" fell on March 17, 1952 when the new center issued its first
tornado "forecast" (later to be called "tornado watches.)

...Cool Saturday...

Yesterday's weather was rather annoying, I must say, after our recent
warmth. But if Friday was irritating, this morning's readings are
positively rude. It's back into the 30s again this morning across
much of the area. Today will be on the coolish side again, with highs
in the 50s. But it will be mostly sunny.

A LIGHT FREEZE: Tonight will feature temperatures in the lower 30s
again on average across Central Alabama. This will likely lead to a
light freeze in some locations. You might want to protect any tender
vegetation that will be vulnerable to a brief freeze. f

EAST COAST STORM: The coastal low is moving up the East Coast of the
U.S. this morning. It has spread a mix of snow, sleet and freezing
rain from the Mid-Atlantic states into New England. UP to 14 inches
of snow fell in the Pocono Mountains overnight, and 18 inches in the
southern Catskills. .

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure over Alabama will hnag on through the
weekend, and then only grudgingly give way as we head into the work
week. Temperatures will return to above normal levels for late March,
with highs in the 70s as early as Monday. It will stay that way for
much of the coming week. Present indications are that the stubborn
high was remain strong enough to keep an approaching system by day at
midweek, keeping showers mainly to our north, although we can't rule
out a passing showers. The storm system finally moves in here during
the day on Saturday, giving us a good chance of showers and storms.
An even stronger storm system looks to be on the long range horizon,
around the 29th, with a good chance of severe weather by then.

NEW WORLDWIDE RAINFALL RECORD: On the island of LaReunion in the
South Pacific Ocean east of Madagascar, they don't measure rainfall in
inches. They measure it in meters. And the volcanic island wracked
up another trophy in its impressive pantheon of record global
rainfalls. The three day record was 3.929 meters. That is over 100
inches in three days. The extreme rainfall amounts were courtesy of
Tropical Cyclone Gamede. World record amounts out to 9 days were set
by the storm.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Torrential rains cause catastrophic flooding
across the southeastern U.S. 22 people died, including 13 in Alabama.
16 inches of rain reported across southern Alabama. Mobile picked up
10.63 inches in 24 hours. Elba in South Alabama was flooded with more
6-12 feet of water, which caused $25 million in damage. Alabama flood
damage totaled $100 million. 26 Alabama counties declared disaster
areas. Columbus GA picks up 7.22 inches of rain to set their all time
24 hour record.

A CHILLY WEEKEND, BUT WARMER BY MONDAY: Our forecast for tonight is
very tricky. We are not saying that to cover all of our bases and
home plate. One thing we are sure of is no precipitation. All the
ingredients are in place for some scattered frost tonight. For frost,
we need a certain amount of ground-level moisture (we have that),
clear weather (we will have that), low dew points (no problem),
little or no wind (that is the fly in the ointment).

That is why, in our forecast for tonight, we use the term scattered
frost in protected areas. To put it in Havana Junction lingo,
scattered frost in the nooks and crannies. On the ridges tonight, we
expect the north wind to hold up all night at least 6 to 12 mph and
even higher during the first part of the night. The wind should
diminish greatly after midnight. Even in the wide open areas, like
Birmingham Airport and on lakes and streams, the wind will not go
calm. You should know if you live in a frost prone area. If so, you
may see low temperatures by morning as low as 31 or 32, so you may
get the frost. Pinson is a prime example. So are places like
Bridgeport, Valley Head—you name it.

Saturday will be chilly with temperatures struggling to reach the
upper 50s. At daybreak Sunday, it may again be close to the freezing
mark. A nice warm up starts Monday with afternoon temperatures in the
lower 70s and look for mid 70s by Tuesday. We are leaving rain out of
the forecast, at least all the way through Tuesday.

THE THURSDAY RAIN: It was greatly beneficial over a big chunk of
Alabama, but many areas got completely short-changed. Only about 1/10
of an inch fell in places like Livingston, Cullman, Tuscaloosa and
many other places west and NW of Birmingham. Generally, from the
immediate Birmingham area east and south, there were good amounts.
For example, 1.45 inches at Anniston Airport. Most places received
between ¾ and 1 inch.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I want to mention about a horrible tornado
outbreak on this date in 1942. There were 25 tornadoes F2 or stronger
across Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee northward into Kentucky,
Illinois and Indiana. Mississippi had 75 fatalities. Baldwyn was
especially hard hit. That town is located on U.S. 45 in NE
Mississippi between Corinth and Tupelo. Two tornadoes, an F4 and an
F3, struck Baldwyn only 35 minutes apart. Can you believe another big
winter storm for the northeast? Many airline flights already
canceled. As much as 20 inches of snow may collect over Upstate New
York in places like Saranac Lake, where the winter has been
unbelievable. New York City will get 4 to 8 inches through tonight
with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. Denver, meanwhile, will bask in
72-degree warmth both Saturday and Sunday. Cold temperatures this
morning 11 below in Grand Forks, North Dakota and 36 below in Beaver,
Alaska. 77 inches of snow on the ground at Yakutak, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Went for a walk without little Miss
Molly. Had my camera to photograph the Bradford pear trees while they
were so beautiful. Along came a big black lab. A new dog on the
block, I had never seen him before. He was very friendly and I gave
him a nice rub down and head scratching. Little did I know that Miss
Molly was perched on her lookout (the back of the couch) taking it
all in. She became extremely jealous and upset. When I went back
inside, she sniffed every square inch of me. The jealous little
rascal. Life goes on....

...Cooler Air Flows Into Alabama...

Any lingering showers across Alabama will end this morning, and we
expect gradual clearing from west to east during the afternoon hours
as drier air rolls into Alabama. The air will also be noticeably
cooler today; most spots will have a hard time getting out of the mid
to upper 50s with a very chilly north breeze.

COOL WEEKEND: We will begin the weekend early tomorrow morning with
temperatures near the freezing mark at daybreak. Tomorrow and Sunday
will be mostly sunny and cool with afternoon highs near 60 degrees. We
should note Sunday morning will also be very chilly; the colder
valleys will be below freezing, with the actual range for most
communities between 28 and 35 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like the first half of next week will be dry with a
warming trend as afternoon temperatures rise back into the 70s. Rain
should return to Alabama toward the end of the week (a week from
today) as an upper trough approaches from the west.

AT THE BEACH: Look for a good supply of sunshine along the Gulf coast
today through the
weekend; afternoon temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 60s, and
the water temperatures from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores are
running in the 67 to 71 degree range. The weather along the coast
should remain generally dry through Wednesday of next week.

BENEFICIAL RAIN: Some Alabama communities saw some really beneficial
rain yesterday and last night... totals included 1.26" at Weaver,
1.13" atop Mt. Cheaha at the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM site (at the restaurant
at Cheaha State Park), 1.10" at Morris, .98" at Argo, .86" in downtown
Birmingham (the SKYCAM site at the Daniel Building on 20th Street),
.83" at Bessemer, .80" at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in Riverchase,
.77" at Anniston, .74" at the Birmingham Airport, .70" at Pinson, .55"
at Greystone Farms, and .22" at Columbiana. We note a number of places
were short changed on the rain; the total at Fayette was only .05",
and our SKYCAM site at Jasper reported only 0.02". Radar data suggests
parts of Marion and Lamar counties did not get enough rain to measure.

NOT TOO LATE FOR SNOW: Some very significant snow events have been
seen as late as April in Alabama; on April 3, 1987 five inches of snow
was measured at the Birmingham Airport (and we must confess that was
an event that was not forecast well!). Snow flurries have occurred as
late as April 25 (that happened way back in 1910).

HODGEPODGE: Winter storm warnings are up for much of the Northeast
U.S. today as snow will overspread that region. New York City and
Boston are expecting three to six inches of snow during the next 24
hours. Indianapolis was soaked with 2.05" of rain yesterday; the total
at New Orleans was 1.53". The Desert Southwest continues to flirt with
triple digit heat; the high yesterday at Death Valley, California was
99 degrees for the second day in a row.

MUCH COOLER OVER THE WEEKEND: The Gulf of Mexico is not having a
drought and they do not need any rain. However, with this storm
system, the heaviest rain has fallen off shore over the Northern
Gulf. There were some good amounts on land including 1.60 inches in
New Orleans and 1.12 at Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Welcome showers have been occurring across Alabama today. Rainfall
amounts have not been worth bragging rights and we needed the rain
very badly. We still have a while to go to possibly get some decent
amounts. Showers will continue through most of tonight, but tapering
off and ending Friday morning. Across North and Central Alabama, the
average rainfall amount should be over ½ inch. A few spots may get a
little more than that. The better amounts will be over the south part
of the state, especially near the coast.

Temperatures were only in the 60s across North Alabama this
afternoon due to a thick cloud cover and the showers and not due to a
cold front. However, we do have a cold front in our near future. It
will start moving across the state late tonight and by daybreak you
will feel lower temperatures over a good part of the state.

THE WEEKEND CHILL: There could be some scattered frost in the
colder Alabama valleys both Saturday morning and Sunday morning as
cooler air spreads over the entire state. In fact, the cold front by
late Friday should be all the way into Central Florida. Here in
Alabama we look for mostly sunshine Saturday. There could be some
clouds showing up on Sunday, but more sun than clouds. We are calling
for a low of 34 both Saturday morning and Sunday morning. If the wind
is completely calm, which it should be at the time, there could be
some scattered frost. A marked warm up will start Monday with
temperatures reaching 70 and the daytime mildness will last well into
next week.

WHAT CAUSES A TORNADO: Weather people have been studying that for
eons. We got a note today from a school teacher in Vancouver,
Washington offering this answer from a 12-yaer old on how tornadoes
form. "When an angel gets mad, he takes a long deep breath and counts
to 10. When he lets out his breath, somewhere a tornado will form."

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 99 was the hottest in the USA yesterday in
Death Valley. Zero was the low this morning at Grand Marias, Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A very welcome e-mail this morning
from Stephanie Gossett in Jacksonville. We ran a story recently about
how they had lost both of their dogs, Abby and Baxter, after they got
into some spilled anti-freeze somewhere in their community. Their
kidneys failed and they had to be euthanized. It was extremely
painful for the Gossett family. Good news. Stephanie logged on to the
local animal shelter web site and found a new beautiful dog named
Sophie. They are elated and I am as happy as I can be for them. In my
opinion, pets are wonderful.....

...Wet Weather Returns To Alabama...

SOME NEEDED RAIN POSSIBLE TODAY: Birmingham's rain total so far in
2007 is only 6.03", less than half of what we would normally have time
time of the year (the normal rain since January 1 on March 15 is
12.36"). We do expect a good increase in the number of showers during
the next 24 hours, and few thunderstorms could even be involved as a
storm system moves into the state from the west. We don't expect any
severe weather problems since the system will be in a weakening phase,
instability is rather limited, and wind fields are rather weak for a
March storm. The best chance of showers and storms will come from
about 12:00 Noon today through 6:00 a.m. tomorrow, and at this time we
expect rainfall amounts over North Alabama in the 1/2 to one inch
range. South Alabama could see rain totals in excess of two inches in
a few spots.

A CHANGE TO COOLER WEATHER: A fairly strong cold front will move
through here late tonight, and as the rain moves out early tomorrow
much cooler air will move in. We are projecting a high of only 59
degrees tomorrow; 23 degrees cooler than yesterday's high of 82 in
Birmingham. The sky should clear slowly on Friday with some sunshine
by afternoon.

At this point the weekend still looks dry with a good supply of
sunshine on Saturday and Sunday.
While we should reach the low 60s both afternoons, nights will be
rather chilly. Early morning temperatures will drop into the mid 30s
both Saturday and Sunday, and it is possible that the normally colder
locations will see a light freeze early Sunday.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The first few days of next week look dry with a
warming trend. At this time it still looks like the pattern will favor
above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall for Alabama
through the end of March.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely along the Gulf coast
today; in fact the rain might even be heavy at times. But, sunshine
returns tomorrow, and the weekend will be mostly sunny. Highs along
the immediate coast will range from 68 to 71, and the sea surface
temperature remains pretty cool. Last night the water at Pensacola
Beach was 70 degrees. If you are headed for the beach next week for
spring break, at this time it looks like a good part of the week will
be dry and mild.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More big thunderstorms for parts of
Southeast Texas yesterday; Houston was soaked with 3.22" of rain.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 68 mph at Galveston, and in Duval County,
Texas golf ball sized hail covered the ground and broke out some
windows. The rain total at Lake Charles, Louisiana was 1.22". The big
thaw continued yesterday in Chicago, where the high was 60 degrees.
But, a new surge of cold air will drop southward today and put the
Great Lakes region back in the deep freeze. Hottest spot in the nation
yesterday was Death Valley, California with 99 degrees.

A SUNNY COOL WEEKEND: All of the weather ingredients seem pretty
much on schedule and there is very little change in our forecast from
recent days. This points to an increase in showers by tomorrow,
followed by a cold front entering the state late Thursday night and
Friday and bringing noticeably cooler temperatures for the weekend.
In fact, by Sunday morning you may hear of some scattered light frost
in the North Alabama valleys.

MUCH NEEDED RAIN: At Birmingham Airport, we only received ½ inch of
rain during the tornado outbreak on March 1 and not a drop since.
Today, so far, has been the 14th day in a row with no rain and our
deficiency for the year is over 6 inches. March is normally one of
our wettest months of the year. The weather system on our doorstep is
going to give us some rain. As it has looked all along, it appears
that South Alabama will get the best amounts approaching 1 inch near
the coast. Across much of Central Alabama, including Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham and Anniston, the total for this entire storm system will
be in the neighborhood of 1/3 to ½ inch.

This afternoon the temperature had soared to near 80 again over much
of Central Alabama. Twelve out of the first 14 days of the month have
had temperatures of 60s or higher, including 8 with 70s or higher.

THE WEEKEND COOL DOWN: Projections are for the cold front to reach
Central Alabama at some point Thursday night, with temperatures
falling to the upper 40s by daybreak Friday. Showers should end by
Friday morning followed by afternoon clearing. It will be windy at
times as the thermometer struggles to reach 60 on Friday. A high
pressure area will move across the area Saturday and Sunday. Both
days should have mostly sunshine with lows in the 30s and highs only
near 60 on Saturday and about 66 on Sunday.

THE INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: It was 2 above zero on this date
in 1993 at Birmingham Airport as the blizzard had ended and the sky
had cleared. Denver, where they have had a heck of a time with snow
earlier in the winter, enjoyed a record high of 74 yesterday. Balmy
weather over a big part of the country has really eaten away at the
snow cover. The snow survey today showed about 13.8% of the lower 48
with a cover. Last month at this time it was 52%. Some serious flood
problems in Central Texas. There were water rescues in Austin.
Yorktown, Texas had 5.35 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Cold
temperatures this morning, 17 in Havre, Montana and 44 below in
Beaver, Alaska. In 1933 on March 14, an F3 tornado cut through the
central part of Nashville killing 11 persons and destroying or
damaging 1,400 homes.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Woe is me. I thought I had it made
early this morning. I got up before daylight and tippy-toed into the
kitchen to turn the coffeepot on. Then without turning on any lights,
I tippy-toed to the front door to go out and fetch the Birmingham
News. I stepped on the favorite ball that Molly loves to play with.
The only thing, it squeaks loudly. Immediately my peace and quiet
evaporated. She stood straight up in bed, stretched and yawned and
was out in the living area ready to play immediately and then she
wanted to go for a long walk. I did not get to read the paper nor
enjoy a cup of coffee until later. You can bet tonight I will hide
that particular ball. I enjoy getting up early, but I sure do like to
read the paper and slurp some coffee before getting bothered by that
little rascal. Despite all that, I still love her dearly. Life goes
on....

...Moisture Levels on the Increase...

Low level moisture will slowly improve across Alabama during the next
48 hours, meaning a general increase in cloud cover and a gradual
increase in the chance of showers. However, we believe any showers
today will remain widely scattered, and mainly over the western half
of the state during the afternoon hours. Showers will become more
numerous tomorrow as an upper air low over Texas moves in our general
direction. The upper low will be in a weakening phase, however, so we
don't expect any problems with severe weather or any really heavy rain
amounts. At this point it looks like the best coverage of showers and
storms will come from about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow through 9:00 a.m.
Sunday. The heaviest rain should be along the Gulf coast, where places
like Mobile and Pensacola could see well over one inch of rain along
with a few stronger storms. Drier air will spread into the region from
the west during the day Friday; most of the showers should be over for
North and Central Alabama by the lunch hour.

THE WEEKEND: The air will be cooler over Alabama on Saturday and
Sunday, but the coldest air will be shunted to the north of the state.
At this time we expect a high in the low 60s on Saturday, with mid 60s
on Sunday. Mornings will be rather chilly; at this point it looks like
the coldest morning will be early Sunday with temperatures will drop
into the mid 30s. Some of the colder valley locations across North
Alabama will have the potential for a light freeze.

The weather begins to warm up early next week, and the overall upper
air pattern suggests temperatures above normal and rainfall below
normal for the March 19-28 period. We should note that Birmingham's
rainfall deficit for the year is over six inches (6.03"), and that
will most likely grow larger during the latter half of March.

AT THE BEACH: Some Alabama students are enjoying spring break this
week; along the central Gulf coast the sky will be mostly cloudy
through tomorrow with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. The
best coverage of rain will be tomorrow. At this time Friday and the
weekend look rain-free. Temperatures on the immediate coast are cooler
due to the cool ocean water; highs in places like Gulf Shores and
Destin will be close to 70 degrees; the water temperatures are
generally in the mid to upper 60s now.

FOURTEEN YEARS AGO TODAY: The low temperature in Birmingham on March
14, 1993 was 2 degrees above zero, the coldest March temperature on
record. It came right after the great Blizzard of 1993; there was
still one foot of snow on the ground at the Birmingham Airport with a
clear sky and light wind.

ROAMING: Heavy rain fell on parts of Texas yesterday; San Antonio was
drenched with 2.24". The hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Goodyear, Arizona with 99 degrees.
