FOSTER CHILDREN SHOE DRIVE
The Alabama Foster Parents Association is collecting new or used shoes
for foster children across the state.
We need 6,000 shoes, new or used in good condition by April, 20th.
We will be celebrating National Foster Care Month in Montgomery on
May 1st. We want each child represented. Please help us make a
difference.
There are plenty of drop-off points throughout the area. Please find one
near you: http://www.kidstolove.org/
Please be a Voice for Alabama's foster children.

A CHILLY WEEKEND, BUT WARMER BY MONDAY: Our forecast for tonight is
very tricky. We are not saying that to cover all of our bases and
home plate. One thing we are sure of is no precipitation. All the
ingredients are in place for some scattered frost tonight. For frost,
we need a certain amount of ground-level moisture (we have that),
clear weather (we will have that), low dew points (no problem),
little or no wind (that is the fly in the ointment).
That is why, in our forecast for tonight, we use the term scattered
frost in protected areas. To put it in Havana Junction lingo,
scattered frost in the nooks and crannies. On the ridges tonight, we
expect the north wind to hold up all night at least 6 to 12 mph and
even higher during the first part of the night. The wind should
diminish greatly after midnight. Even in the wide open areas, like
Birmingham Airport and on lakes and streams, the wind will not go
calm. You should know if you live in a frost prone area. If so, you
may see low temperatures by morning as low as 31 or 32, so you may
get the frost. Pinson is a prime example. So are places like
Bridgeport, Valley Head—you name it.
Saturday will be chilly with temperatures struggling to reach the
upper 50s. At daybreak Sunday, it may again be close to the freezing
mark. A nice warm up starts Monday with afternoon temperatures in the
lower 70s and look for mid 70s by Tuesday. We are leaving rain out of
the forecast, at least all the way through Tuesday.
THE THURSDAY RAIN: It was greatly beneficial over a big chunk of
Alabama, but many areas got completely short-changed. Only about 1/10
of an inch fell in places like Livingston, Cullman, Tuscaloosa and
many other places west and NW of Birmingham. Generally, from the
immediate Birmingham area east and south, there were good amounts.
For example, 1.45 inches at Anniston Airport. Most places received
between ¾ and 1 inch.
THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I want to mention about a horrible tornado
outbreak on this date in 1942. There were 25 tornadoes F2 or stronger
across Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee northward into Kentucky,
Illinois and Indiana. Mississippi had 75 fatalities. Baldwyn was
especially hard hit. That town is located on U.S. 45 in NE
Mississippi between Corinth and Tupelo. Two tornadoes, an F4 and an
F3, struck Baldwyn only 35 minutes apart. Can you believe another big
winter storm for the northeast? Many airline flights already
canceled. As much as 20 inches of snow may collect over Upstate New
York in places like Saranac Lake, where the winter has been
unbelievable. New York City will get 4 to 8 inches through tonight
with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. Denver, meanwhile, will bask in
72-degree warmth both Saturday and Sunday. Cold temperatures this
morning 11 below in Grand Forks, North Dakota and 36 below in Beaver,
Alaska. 77 inches of snow on the ground at Yakutak, Alaska.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Went for a walk without little Miss
Molly. Had my camera to photograph the Bradford pear trees while they
were so beautiful. Along came a big black lab. A new dog on the
block, I had never seen him before. He was very friendly and I gave
him a nice rub down and head scratching. Little did I know that Miss
Molly was perched on her lookout (the back of the couch) taking it
all in. She became extremely jealous and upset. When I went back
inside, she sniffed every square inch of me. The jealous little
rascal. Life goes on....
