...Front To Bring Showers and Storms...

Showers and thunderstorms were building as massing across the
Tennessee Valley section of North Alabama on this Saturday afternoon.
They are slowly marching south ahead of a frontal system that is
pushing into Tennessee.

INCREASING RAIN CHANCES: The persistent East Coast trough activity
has helped to send us some rather rare July cool fronts. Well, cool
is a relative term. Our current one will sag through the area late
tomorrow into Monday. Scattered showers and storms will continue into
the evening hours and likely continue into the overnight hours. The
front will meander into the northern part of the state tomorrow,
setting the stage for fairly good chances of showers and storms. Low
pressure will ripple along the front, giving it the impetus that it
needs to push into Central Alabama on Monday. It becomes a guessing
game as to how far south it moves before stalling. The GFS pushes it
well into South Alabama, with drier air filtering into the northern
half of the state by Tuesday. This means that Tuesday and Wednesday
should be shower free with moisture returning for isolated to
scattered storms later in the week.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: That upper low that was over the northwestern
Gulf yesterday is now over western Louisiana, giving a break to South
Texas, which has been beset with more heavy rains this week, sending
rivers like the Nueces, Frio, Atascosa and Trinity in South Texas out
of their banks. More localized flooding is expected to continue
occurring along the James River in parts of North Dakota and South
Dakota. Severe thunderstorms are possible today in the Savannah
River region between Georgia and South Carolina. A new severe
thunderstorm watch was issued around noon today. Severe thunderstorm
watches are also in effect for parts of New England.

ON THE TROPICS: A low pressure system has developed east of the
Bahamas. It is expected to move north northeast. Some development is
possible, although an upper low moving along with it will keep enough
shear in place to prevent significant development. There is an
aircraft scheduled to reconnoiter the system Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: New York City was shrouded in fog on the
morning of July 28, 1945 as Lt. Col. William Smith piloted his B-25
Mitchell Bomber toward Newark, New Jersey from Bedford, Massachusetts.
Controllers urged him to land because of the fog, but he received
military clearance to continue his mission. As he descended to look
for a landmark, he found himself in the canyons of skyscrapers over
Manhattan. As he tried to weave and dodge the buildings, the bomber
crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building at 250 mph,
leaving a gaping hole in the world's tallest structure. As debris
rained down on the streets below, hysterical New Yorkers believed
their city was under attack. Fourteen people died in the crash,
including the crew of three.

...Rain Chances Increase Today...

No rain in the rain bucket at the Birmingham International Airport
during the past seven days, pushing our rainfall deficit back over
eighteen inches. Some areas have received some beneficial rains this
past week, but it has been a hit or miss proposition. Hopefully that
will change over the next three days as an approaching front will
bring some decent average rainfall amounts across the area.

WEEKEND: We will call for increasing chances for showers and storms
today across the area as the front sags our way. There will be an
even better chance tomorrow. The front should be moving through the
area late Sunday night through Monday morning. If it is on this
timetable, it will mean a few showers Monday morning, but most of the
rain should be into South Central Alabama Monday afternoon. But,
summertime fronts in the Deep South are on time about as much as
passenger trains, so it could still be north of us by Monday
afternoon, meaning another wet afternoon. That would be fine with us.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We are fairly confident that the front will be
south of us by Tuesday, meaning that showers and storms will be likely
across southern sections, but Central and North Alabama should be
shower free. The GFS keeps us in a dry situation through the
remainder of the week. Ruling out even isolated daily afternoon and
evening storms is hard to do in Alabama in the summer, but we will
keep it mainly dry and seasonably hot through Friday. Highs will be
in the lower to perhaps middle 90s. Lows will be right around 70
degrees.

THE TROPICS: The weak surface low over the northwestern Gulf of
Mexico moved onto the Texas coast yesterday. While it did not develop
tropically, it has still been producing some significant rainfall
amounts over Texas and Louisiana. The heaviest rainfall today will be
over the southern Parishes of Louisiana, where up to about two inches
is expected to fall around Lafayette. We will turn our eyes to the
eastern Atlantic by late in the week, where there have been some hints
that we might see some development by the end of the week.

ON THIS DATE TWO YEARS AGO: A significant tornado struck Birmingham,
England during the afternoon. The tornado, one of the strongest to
ever hit Great Britain, injured twenty three people, including three
critically. Other tornadoes touched down in Peterborough. On
average, thirty three tornadoes occur each year in the United Kingdom.
They are generally less destructive than their American cousins. The
Birmingham tornado had winds estimated at 130 mph, ranking it as a
four on TORRO's one to ten tornado scale. This corresponds to a
strong tornado and makes this twister one of the strongest to ever hit
England.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of getting some more thunderstorms
over the weekend with some locally beneficial rain amounts. Credit
this to two things—an influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and
a front pushing down from the north. The great big mystery is the
front. It is the same old story when one tries to visit us in the
middle of summer. They struggle to get south of the Tennessee River.
Latest projections on this front is that it will reach extreme North
Alabama Monday morning and then stall in Central Alabama later
Tuesday and Wednesday. For that reason, we have re-introduced
scattered showers and thunderstorms for Monday and even a slight
chance on Tuesday. However, on Tuesday we think most of the showers
and storms will be south of Birmingham.

Trying to pin down the weekend more closely, the thunderstorms
tomorrow should be mostly in the afternoon and evening and scattered
in nature. We still think the more numerous thunderstorms will be
Sunday, especially during the afternoon. Typical summer temperatures
through all of this with highs from 88 to 92.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The NHC has issued its last advisory on Tropical
Depression Dalila. The remnant low, all that is left, was about 500
miles west of the south tip of Baja, California in the Pacific.
Closer to home, a week low-pressure area near the upper Texas coast
is showcasing a lot of showers and thunderstorms over the NW Gulf of
Mexico. It should move inland at some point over the weekend, so
significant development is not expected. But, believe me, a system
like this can still dump a lot of heavy rain and that is expected
over SE Texas and South Louisiana. All of South Texas is as wet as a
saturated sponge.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Not the best of weather. There will be a good
chance of showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. In fact, they
could be scattered to occasionally numerous all the way through next
Tuesday. Because of more clouds and rain, high temperatures will stay
in the upper 80s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Severe weather is a problem this afternoon
from Kentucky and Virginia northward through Maryland, Pennsylvania
and New York. Severe Thunderstorm Watches were in effect for most of
those areas. It is the monsoon season in the SW USA and some good
thunderstorms were in progress across Arizona again this afternoon.
Those can cause quick flash flooding in the dry washes of the West.
Thunderstorms were also moving on shore in SE Texas and South
Louisiana due to the nervous Gulf of Mexico. 48-state temperature
extremes included: 118 in Death Valley to a low of 44 this morning at
Lake Tahoe.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Do not know what I am going to do for
my little 9-pound pal on her 5th birthday, which comes up in late
August—maybe a spanking. Did we not used to give our kids a friendly
little spanking on their birthdays? Molly would not understand that.
The only spanking she's ever had was with a rolled up newspaper.
Until this day, when she sees me back roll the paper to take out the
curls, she looks a bit anxious. She shivered much of yesterday. Her
hair is cut so short, that she gets cold indoors. We wrapped her up
in her blanket and she was elated at that. She now has her favorite
blanket in my recliner. I may never get my recliner back, but I am
still happy and life goes on......

...Hot, Hazy Summer Weather...

Weather changes are often slow and rather subtle in late July, but we
will have some day to day change during the next seven days. For
today, it looks like the showers and storms that form this afternoon
will be relatively widely spaced thanks to warmer air aloft, making
the air a little more stable. The chance of any one spot getting wet
today is about one in five. And, with the increased sunshine, we
figure most communities will reach the low 90s this afternoon.

OUR WEEKEND: A general increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms is likely over the weekend as a surface front approaches
the state from the north. We expect scattered showers and
thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night, but the best
coverage of showers and storms should come on Sunday. Rainfall over
the weekend should average about one inch for the northern half of
Alabama, but some spots could see more with the stronger
thunderstorms.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air will begin to drop into North Alabama Sunday
night as a surface low
pressure center deepens northeast of the state. At this time it looks
like the best chance of showers and storms on Monday will be south of
I-20, and by Tuesday most of the state should be dry and less humid.
The chance of rain on Wednesday looks small as well, but with
returning moisture a few scattered afternoon showers and storms could
show up during the end of the week.

TROPICS: There is a huge mass of disturbed weather over the western
Gulf of Mexico, but upper air winds don't favor any surface
organization, and tropical storm formation in that region is not
likely. However, all of that moisture will bring locally heavy rain to
the coasts of Texas and Louisiana during the next 48 hours. Elsewhere
in the Atlantic basin, there are scattered tropical waves, but no sign
of anything really organized. In the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm
Dalila is packing sustained winds of 45 mph, and is moving to the
west/northwest over open water about 400 miles west of the southern
tip of Baja California. The system will slowly dissipate over the
weekend, but high altitude moisture will stream into the Southwest
U.S., enhancing the current monsoon there.

AT THE BEACH: A few showers and storms are likely along the Gulf coast
from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores through the weekend, but
there will be a few intervals of sunshine. Highs along the immediate
coast will range from 87 to 90, and the the SST (sea surface
temperature) last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 86 degrees.

TIDBITS: One of the heaviest rain totals in Alabama yesterday was from
Jemison, where 1.61" of rain fell from afternoon thunderstorms. In
Tennessee, Memphis was soaked with 1.43" of rain yesterday. The low
yesterday morning in South Lake Tahoe, California was a refreshing 40
degrees.

BETTER CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND STORMS FOR WEEKEND: Scattered showers
and thunderstorms were developing again this afternoon, maybe not as
many as yesterday. We believe that showers and thunderstorms will
thin out considerably on Friday with only a slight chance for any one
community. There should be an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. As has been the case recently,
some of those will dump heavy amounts of rain. As is the case in most
of our July thunderstorms, the vicious lightning is interesting to
look at, but only from indoors.

Again, our eyes turn northward where another relatively rare July
front will be trying to push into Alabama Sunday night or Monday. It
is almost a coin toss where it will come to a halt. Our best
projection is to stall somewhere near Montgomery by the middle of
next week. This means that our scattered showers and storms on Monday
could be mostly south of the Birmingham area. This could just about
eliminate showers and storms next Tuesday. That is way down the road,
so don't take it to the bank.
A lot of places got some very beneficial rain yesterday and last
night. There were even some flooding problems in places like
Talladega and Madison County. In Huntsville, 2.34 inches of rain fell
at Von Braun Center, including almost 2 inches in only 25 minutes.
A few other places that got over 2 inches of rain included Lay Dam,
Alexander City, and East Jefferson County on Rex Lake Road. A lot of
other places received well over 1 inch.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The SW Gulf of Mexico is nervous. There is a
large, but disorganized, area of showers and thunderstorms. Upper-
level winds are unfriendly for significant development and surface
pressures were not falling. The National Hurricane Center does not
expect any tropical development during the next few days. This does
not mean that the disturbed weather area will not cause problems. The
official forecast for Houston calls for heavy rain at times, all the
way through Friday night. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for parts
of South Texas. San Antonio got an additional 2.21 inches of rain
Saturday. That region of the country is running out their ears with
rain. The highest and lowest temperatures in the lower 48 states in
the same state again—117 yesterday in Death Valley and 42 this
morning at Lake Tahoe, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I believe Little Miss Molly is still
having a hangover from spending the day at the PBS (Puppy Beauty
Shop). She has been sleeping most of today. She has had two
delightful visits with her little Yorkie friend somewhere along the
walking track for two days in a row. That absolutely makes her day.
With her approaching age 5, I still have not written my long-planned
children's book. I am ashamed of myself. I must get with it. I may
take a week's vacation later in the year and work on it all week.
Still getting a lot of requests to write a book. I not only
appreciate that very much, but I am awestruck at the attention my
little pal has received from all 50 states and even some foreign
countries. Life goes on......

...Scattered Showers and Storms...

More routine summertime weather for Alabama today. Most of the
sunshine during the morning, most of the showers and thunderstorms
during the afternoon and evening. The chance of any one spot getting
wet again today is about one in three, and like recent days, the
stronger storms will produce heavy rain, gusty winds, lots of
lightning, and possibly some small hail. The high this afternoon will
be in the 87 to 91 degree range for most communities.

There would be a decrease in the number of afternoon showers tomorrow
as the air becomes more stable, but an approaching surface front could
mean an increase in showers and storms again over the weekend. But,
even then the storms will remain scattered, and there will be some
decent intervals of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK: The primary American computer global computer model, the
GFS, continues to hint that drier air will slip into North Alabama on
Monday and Tuesday of next week with few if any showers around here,
but that idea is pretty far fetched for late July in Alabama, and we
won't buy into that just yet.

TROPICS: A large area of disturbed weather has developed in the
western Gulf of Mexico, and is primarily associated with an upper
trough, and not a surface based low. This disturbance will move toward
the Texas coast today, and tropical storm formation is not likely due
to the unfavorable upper air wind pattern, But, parts of the Texas
coastal plain can expect some heavy rain during the next 48 hours. In
the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Dalila is packing sustained winds
of 45 mph about 300 miles west of the Mexican coast, and will move
slowly to the northwest and weaken in coming days. But, some high
altitude moisture from the system will move up into the Southwest
U.S., enhancing the monsoon pattern and setting the stage for som]e
heavy rain in states like Arizona and New Mexico.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: Big time summer thunderstorms erupted again
yesterday in scattered spots across Alabama. Rain totals included
2.05" at Childersburg, 1.38" at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in
Riverchase, 1.32" at Orange Beach, 1.09" at Collinsville, .97" at
Bessemer, .83" at Chelsea, .55" at Greystone Cove in Shelby County,
and .51" at Inverness. Madison County, including the city of
Huntsville, was placed under a flash flood warning for a couple of
hours last night.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More heavy rain for parts of Texas yesterday
and last night; the total at San Antonion was 2.35". One of the ABC
33/40 Weather Watchers is Todd Foisy, who reports daily from Girdwood,
Alaska (Todd is a Birmingham native). He reported a high yesterday of
57, a low of 50, and a rain total of .08". That really sounds
refreshing to me. Hottest place in the nation, as you might expect,
was Death Valley, CA with 117 degrees.

SCATTERED STORMS EVERY DAY: Almost every July day has thunderstorms
somewhere in Alabama. The only variation is how many and where most
of them will occur. July is also one of our more humid times and
afternoons can be quite hot. We have been blessed this year with no
unbearable heat so far this summer. In 1952 at this time, the whole
state of Alabama was locked in a major drought—among the worst ever—
and a long string of temperatures 100 or hotter. For the rest of this
week and through the weekend, the forecast is almost automatic with
scattered showers and thunderstorms daily. Most of the time they will
crank up around midday, increase in number in the afternoon and
slowly fade away after sunset. If you were to pin us to the wall and
force us to talk, we might say the best chance will come on Sunday.
By that time, it is possible that a weak front will be pushing down
through Tennessee and approaching Alabama. Hot temperatures will be
consistent all the way through the weekend within a degree or so on
either side of 90.

Scattered thunderstorms developed around noon today and were
increasing this afternoon, although not very numerous. They were
again, slow-movers, so some communities were getting heavy amounts of
rain. Last night some slow-moving storms dumped around 2 inches of
rain in North Jefferson County and parts of Walker County.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We keep hearing people say that the 2007 hurricane
season forecast is a bust. Absolutely not true. It is way too early
to write it off. There are no threats of tropical storms, at least
for the next few days, in the Atlantic Basin, which also includes the
Caribbean Sea and our dear, dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 117 was the hot spot in Death Valley
yesterday. Coolest this morning was Meacham, Oregon with 38. In
Florida, Jacksonville got 2.32 inches of rain. Alice, Texas got over
4 inches. In Montana, the high was 102 in Billings. Oklahoma City is
well on the way to having their wettest year on record. They have
already received 37.89 inches—a surplus of 16.68 inches. Their normal
annual rain amount is 35.85 inches, so they have already surpassed
that by around 2 inches. Just to cool you off, 20 inches of snow fell
at Walnut Grove in NE Alabama during the Blizzard of '93—the most in
Alabama. New York City has an 11-inch surplus in rain so far this year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Exactly 18 seconds after Little Miss
Molly crawled out of bed this morning, she grabbed a ball and slung
it at me. It was clear that I was going to have to make up for lost
time yesterday, when she was away at the beauty shop all day. She
slept almost continuously when she got home, because she gets no naps
at the PBS due to the excitement. She sure does look funny. Her hair
is real short and she looks more like a swamp rat (the majority owner
will scold me for that). I still love her regardless. We asked the PD
(Puppy Doctor) to prescribe some Acepromazine for little Miss Molly
when it is stormy. A friend for lif,e in Hueytown, highly recommended
it. She says it works wonders with her little dogs. Maybe that will
keep Molly from spending the day under the bed. Life goes on......

...Sun and Storms...

This is a new day, but we have an old forecast this morning. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms will form again today across the state, and
while the most numerous showers and storms will come during the
afternoon and evening hours, a morning shower is not out of the
question. The chance of any one neighborhood getting wet today is
about one in three, and like recent days, the stronger storms will
produce heavy rain and lots of lightning. Away from the showers and
storms, we will see some decent intervals of sunshine, and the high
today should be in the 87 to 91 degree range for most spots.

We really don't expect much day to day change through the weekend,
with the daily mix of summer sun and storms. The placement and
coverage of the showers and storms will change every day, but trying
to identify those changes is almost impossible due the small features
that bring about those changes. We will just have to broad brush the
forecast with "scattered, mainly afternoon showers and storms" for the
next five to seven days. Nothing uncommon for mid-summer in Alabama.

PEAK OF THE SUMMER HEAT: Based on averages since weather data has been
collected in Birmingham (good data starts in the 1880s here), we are
now in the hottest part of a normal summer. The average high is 91,
and the average low is 70 from July 13 through August 10. We can be
thankful that temperatures this week are running a little below normal
because it can be very hot this time of the year. In the summer of
1952, new record highs were reached six days in a row (from July 23
through July 28) with triple digit heat on all of those days. The
hottest day was July 25, 1952 when the high in Birmingham was 106
degrees.

TROPICS: We are getting very close to the time of summer when we
typically see an increase in tropical activity across the Atlantic
basin; the peak of the season comes during August, September, and the
first half of October. For now, the waves across the Atlantic are
relatively disorganized, and tropical storm formation is not expected
through mid-week.

AT THE BEACH: About six to eight hours of sunshine daily along the
Gulf coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores through the coming weekend
with the chance of one or two passing showers or thunderstorms each
day.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: While showers and storms were more widely spaced
across Alabama yesterday, NEXRAD estimates suggested almost two inches
of rain over parts of northern Jefferson and Walker Counties last
night.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Jacksonville, Florida was soaked with 2.32" of
rain yesterday. Monsoon moisture continues to increase over the
Southwest U.S.; the Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson measured .74"
yesterday. The hottest spot in the nation was Death Valley, California
with 117 degrees.

NO MAJOR DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE: It is that time of year when Alabama
weather can get stuck in a rut with the daily forecast sounding
almost identical to the day before and for several days ahead. That
is the situation we are in now. The number of showers and
thunderstorms depend greatly on subtle changes of various weather
elements. Some of those are difficult to detect.

For example, yesterday a number of communities got rain, including
some big amounts, because the thunderstorms were literally crawling
across the Alabama countryside. Indeed, they stood still at times
permitting rain over the same community for several hours in a row.
More than 4 inches of rain fell in the Bynum community east of
Anniston, while the Anniston Airport at Oxford received only a very
small amount. Today showers and storms were hard to find. Some will
still form later this afternoon and this evening.

For the rest of the week and through the weekend, we are going to
mention scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. If you are
lucky, you could get some good rain amounts on some days, while on
other days you will not get a drop. It is impossible to tell you,
even early in the day, yes or no for your rain later that day.

Despite some good rain events over the last two to three weeks, we
are still in a drought and it is going to take a lot more juice
falling from the sky to greatly alleviate that situation. 2007 rain
deficiency as of today:

18.28 inches at Birmingham Airport
21.29 Anniston Airport
21.87 Tuscaloosa Airport
18.98 Huntsville Airport
15.44 Muscle Shoals

Mobile has fared better. They have received 10 inches so far this month.

AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and thunderstorms every single day—a
better than average chance through at least Saturday, with highs 88
to 90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Even though we are almost 2 months into the 2007
hurricane season, still no significant storm. That does not mean that
we will not have an active season, however, no signs of development
at least for the next several days.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Fascinated by the official forecast for
Bismarck today. It says mostly sunny and breezy with high 105-109.
They did not even use the word hot. Yesterday it was 108 in Killdeer,
North Dakota and 110 in Miles City, Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is at the beauty shop
getting a haircut, so for the second day in a row, I will hardly see
her. Much playtime tonight, however. Sure enjoyed the trip yesterday
with the 33/40 weather interns and the 33/40 weather crew. They tied
me to my chair and made me eat three small bowls of banana pudding. I
did not severely object and life goes on......

...Summer Showers Again Today...

Summer showers and thunderstorms will continue across Alabama through
mid-week as an upper air low north of Alabama gradually moves to the
northwest. Occasional spokes of energy rotating around this system,
along with the usual daytime heating process, means a shower or storm
will be possible at almost anytime through Friday, but the showers
will be scattered and rainfall distribution will remain uneven. The
chance of any one spot getting wet over the next few days is about one
in three.

WEEKEND PEEK: A relatively moist airmass will stay in place, so we
will continue to mention the chance of scattered, mainly afternoon
showers and storms on Saturday and Sunday. There could be a few decent
intervals of sunshine, and afternoon high temperatures over the
weekend should be close to 90 degrees.

BIG TIME SOAKERS: While the Birmingham metropolitan area was bone day
yesterday, active storms to the east and to the west produced heavy
downpours and caused some other problems. We had one report of 4.25"
of rain near Bynum, which is just east of Anniston in Calhoun County.
Other rain reports included 2.46" at Mountainboro (northwest of
Gadsden), 2.34" near Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, 2.24" at Hokes Bluff,
2.00" at Fayette, and 1.63" at Black Creek (northeast of Gadsden).
Trees and power lines were blown down in Sand Rock and Leesburg in
Cherokee County, and there was other scattered damage reported near
the community of Kansas, in the far northwest part of Walker County
west of Carbon Hill.

Temperatures remained amazingly cool in those rain areas in East
Alabama; at 2:00 p.m. yesterday the temperature at our SKYCAM site in
Gadsden was only 62 degrees with a steady rain falling; that is 30
degrees below normal for July 23. Vic Bell, the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher
in Black Creek (in Northeast Etowah County) reported a high of only
68.7 degrees, with rain falling for twelve consecutive hours. Sure
doesn't sound like July in Alabama.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Despite all of those big rain totals, we still have a
long way to go to get out of this drought. Birmingham's rain total for
July is 2.71", with 14.62" for the year. The current rain deficit for
2007 is a whopping 18.28".

IN THE TROPICS: While the Atlantic basin is rather quiet, Tropical
storm Dalila formed in the Pacific Ocean yesterday not far from the
Mexican coast. Top winds are near 55 mph, and the system is expected
to move parallel to the Mexico coast, ultimately weakening and falling
apart west of Baja California by the weekend. At this point it does
not look like Dalila will impact any land area.

MORE SOAKERS: New York City was drenched with 2.31" of rain yesterday.
Big storms formed even in the normally dry part of Arizona yesterday
(monsoon time for them); the total in Prescott, AZ yesterday was
1.17".

MONDAY MORNING SOAKERS: Showers developed early this morning over the
eastern side of the state, and with little movement and amazing
staying power, some very heavy amounts of rain were measured over
parts of Etowah and Calhoun counties. ABC 33/40 Skywatcher Josh
Tanner from Hokes Bluff reports 1.65″ of rain since the storms began
this morning (as of early afternoon), and he adds that his uncle is
measuring a whopping 4.25″ of rain since this morning just north of
Bynum (just east of Anniston)

NEXRAD radar estimates are above 5-6″ between Bynum and Boiling
Spring in Calhoun County, and that is followed closely by a 5″
bullseye about 2 miles due west of downtown Rainbow City in Etowah
County. Surrounding that, radar estimates between 2 and 4 inches from
the Neely Henry Dam, to Ohatchee, stretching southwestward to Bynum.

Where it has been raining today, it is much cooler! At late morning
the Gadsden SKYCAM was showing 63 degrees with 0.48″ of rain since
midnight. That is pretty amazing for a July morning in Alabama.

Additional showers and storms will continue to form this afternoon
and early tonight; the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued an update
suggesting the best chance of strong storms with local areas of
damaging wind would be along and west of U.S. 43 for the next six
hours, or west of a line from Muscle Shoals to Tuscaloosa to
Demopolis to Mobile. This is where instability values are highest.

LOOKING AHEAD: Weather maps this afternoon show a strong, closed
upper low over West Virginia, that is moving slowly to the west/
northwest. Occasional spokes rotating around this feature will keep
our weather rather unsettled through mid-week, with more clouds than
sun and scattered showers and storms statewide. While most of the
showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours,
in this kind of setup you can't rule out the chance of a few late
night or morning showers, like we have seen today.

Temperatures will remain below normal through mid-week, with
afternoon highs generally in the 85 to 89 degree range. The average
high for July 23 in Birmingham is 91, and it remains at 91 until
August 16, when the average high drops to 90.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A weak low is about 350 miles north of Bermuda, and
is moving north toward the cooler water of the North Atlantic.
Tropical storm formation is not expected through mid-week.

THE GREAT WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest spot in the U.S. this morning
was Nuiqsut, Alaksa with 36 degrees. Coldest in the "lower 48" was
West Yellowstone, Montana with 39. Yesterday's official high in
Birmingham was 90 degrees; considerably cooler than Boise, Idaho,
where the high was 103, and Billings, Montana with 100.

NO J.B.: J.B. has an excused absence today; he went with us on the
annual intern lunch to Jim's Pit BBQ in Billingsley. Be sure and ask
J.B. how much banana pudding he consumed today after a massive
barbecue plate...

...Showers Possible This Week...

Was it just me, or did the air and the sky have a little of a
September feel to it late yesterday afternoon around the Birmingham
area? Maybe it is the football magazines on the stands, but with the
fairly low dew points still in place around the Magic City, a brisk
little easterly breeze and some stratocumulus clouds around, I could
feel fall. It is not far away.

DROUGHT STILL WITH US: Showers developed over Georgia during the
early morning hours. Some of them migrated into eastern Alabama and
others formed. Some of them dumped some heavy rainfall amounts, but
since they were slow moving, the areal coverage was small. Coverage
east of I-65 was about 25%, west of the interstate, well less than
10%. We have enjoyed some decent showers over most of the area over
the past month, but make no bones about, the drought is still with us.
While the exception, category five drought area has shrunk ever so
slightly, it is still a large part of the northern half of Alabama.
Virtually all of the northern half of the state with the exception of
the Northwest corner is at least in the Extreme Drought category. The
rainfall deficit in Birmingham has actually grown slightly over the
past few weeks. So while we have slowed down the rate of growth of
the shortfall, it is still a big one. And it isn't getting going to
drop substantially, at least not in the foreseeable future.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Our much advertised upper level low will be moving
westward over the next couple of days. As it does, it will increase
our shower and thunderstorm chances. Those chances will be low today,
with the surface trough from yesterday still hanging around.
Scattered showers and storms will be with us each day Tuesday through
Friday. An approaching front will increase showers and storm chances
at least by Saturday, lasting into Sunday. Again, no drought busting
rains in sight

TROPICS: A tropical wave and upper low are interacting near Bermuda.
Wind shear is relatively light and there is an outside chance some
development could occur today before it moves northward over cooler
waters.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: A powerful thunderstorm made street lamps
necessary in the middle of the afternoon in Atlanta Georgia. Over
four inches of rain during the 2 hour thunderstorm caused a foot of
water to flood Union Station.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Tornadoes hit South Carolina in wake of dying
Hurricane Danny, including one that leveled a duplex apartment and
killed a 32-year-old woman. A Charlotte, North Carolina, railroad
trestle gave way, plunging a CSX locomotive into Little Sugar Creek.
Crew members escaped unharmed. 6.88 inches of rain fell in
Charlotte, breaking the 24 hour record of 5.91 inches that had been
set in July 1944. A record 6.14 inches fell between midnight at 2
p.m. Up to 10 inches fell in other parts of South Central North
Carolina.

...Refreshing For July...

We got to a refreshing start across the area this morning, with low
60s common over North and Central Alabama. Throw in a few 50s in
places, like 55 at Vinemont, 57 at Crossville, Fort Payne and DeSoto
State Park, and 59 at Decatur and Pinson and its makes for a nice
morning.

THIS AFTERNOON/TONIGHT: The presence of a trough of low pressure
over eastern Alabama, extending up through Northwest Georgia and into
southeastern Tennessee makes us wary for the possibility of a few
isolated thunderstorms east of I-65 today. Radar was already
verifying the hunch earlier this morning with morning storms over
North Georgia. The best chance should be over Southeast Alabama,
where the moisture is more plentiful.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The story of the week ahead will be an large upper
low that is getting its act together over the Mid Atlantic states
today. This low will tighten and rotate back to the northwest through
tomorrow. It looks like it might pick Ohio as its temporary state of
residency. This will allow for a southwesterly flow over Alabama and
the South, which will allow moisture to return to the area. Those
dewpoints will already be coming back up to near seasonal levels
tomorrow. The combination of the increased moisture and the trough
hanging around eastern sections will produce scattered showers and
storms developing tomorrow. Tuesday looks like more of the same, with
more being the operative word, and hence a better chance of storms
then. Carbon copy on Wednesday and Thursday, and then it looks like
we might see even better rain chances as we head into the weekend.

WEEKEND: Showers and storms will be fairly likely by Friday and be
on the numerous side on Saturday and Sunday. There are signs that
this could be setting the stage for a week of high rain chances by the
following week.

TROPICS: A tropical wave north of the Greater Antilles is interacting
with an upper level low, producing numerous thunderstorms. Wind shear
will relax a bit today, allowing for some development, but chances
don't look good for a tropical depression to form as it drifts moves
north. A low has formed off the coast of North Carolina as predicted,
and it will move up the coast toward New England, but tropical
development is unlikely.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: Father Benito Vines, a Jesuit priest at the
Royal College of Belen in Havana died on this date after a
distinguished career of studying and predicting hurricanes. Known as
Father Hurricane, Vines was a hero in Cuba for his accurate hurricane
forecasts.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: People in Phoenix, Arizona live with
oppressive summer heat every year. They say that the extreme heat,
dust storms, and smoke from nearby wildfires are a small price to pay
for the nearly perfect weather that the aptly named Valley of the Sun
enjoys the other nine months of the year. When the high temperature
on the afternoon of the 21st reached a scalding 117F, it was a record
for the date, and just a few degrees short of the all-time high of
122F. The overnight temperature the next morning could only manage to
fall to 96F, setting the all-time record for Phoenix, AZ continued in
the midst of a record hot July.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: It was the hottest night in history for a city
known for its sizzling temperatures as the mercury in Phoenix, AZ only
managed to fall to 96F.
