...Hot Sunday...

My original headline for today said Warm Sunday. Now that I think
that we will see fairly widespread 90s today, I think that we can
officially change it to Hot Sunday. We are not far from record
territory today. The record for the date at Birmingham is 94F. We
will likely see 90F or 91F today. It is interesting to note that some
of our warmest days come when there is a northerly wind, like today.
That is counter intuitive, since warmth usually comes from the south.
But the relatively drier air allows the air to warm faster, since more
energy is needed to warm the water molecules.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: So, a hot Sunday with lots of sunshine. We didn't
see many cumulus clouds yesterday, but we still could see a few today.
Temperatures tonight will drop into the lower 60s under clear skies.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The warm and dry conditions will continue Monday and
Tuesday. Highs both days will be right around 90 degrees with mostly
sunny skies. I had thought we might need to reintroduce the slight
chance of a shower or storm on Tuesday, but I have decided to take it
out for now. By Wednesday, a frontal system will come close enough to
Alabama to trigger a few showers and storms mainly over the Tennessee
Valley. A low will form over Arkansas on Wednesday night and move
northeastward along the front on Thursday. This will give us a good
chance of showers and storms on Thursday. The front will likely stall
over Central Alabama on Friday, keeping a good chance of showers and
storms in the forecast. Temperatures will be in the 80s by day and
60s by night. You will also start to feel the humidity by midweek,
with dew points creeping into the upper 60s.

THE WEEKEND: The front will likely start washing out over Alabama on
Saturday, leaving a warm and moist airmass in place across Alabama,
accompanied by the usual afternoon and evening showers and storms.
Highs will continue in the middle 80s. Lows will be in the middle and
upper 60s.

ISS SIGHTING TONIGHT: The International Space Station will make
another pass across the southeastern United States tonight. From
Birmingham, it will rise over the west northwest horizon at 8:28 p.m.
It will reach its zenith at 8:30 p.m. at an elevation of 32 degrees.
It will be very bright, with a magnitude of -2.4, which is very bright.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A line of severe thunderstorms ripped across
western Pennsylvania, causing a pavilion to collapse at Kennywood Park
in West Mifflin, PA, killing one woman and injuring 54 others. The
roof collapsed on the ride The Whip, jammed with park patrons. At
least 10,000 people were estimated to have been in the amusement park
when the storms struck about 7 p.m. Meteorologists said that the
damage was caused by a macroburst. May 31st is a very infamous date
in Pennsylvania weather history. The state's worst tornado outbreak
occurred on that date in 1985, killing sixty-five. More in today's
weather history post on AlabamaWx.com.

===================================================================

As we get ready to close the books on May, the fifth month of 2009
will go down in Birmingham weather annals as a warm and wet month.
Through the 29th, the mean temperature at the Birmingham International
Airport was 70.8F. The long term climatological average for May in
Birmingham is 69.3F. The average precipitation for May is 4.83 inches.
It looks like we will end the month with 6.26 inches of rain, or about
129% of normal.
NICE WEEKEND: Significant rain has fallen on every weekend day in May
at Birmingham. Today will represent a complete turnaround from that
trend, with sunny skies and no showers expected. Ditto that for
tomorrow. Highs will be in the middle and upper 80s on both days. A
few spots will edge to near or just above 90 degrees tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like another dry and warm day across
Alabama as high pressure remains in control of our weather. By
Tuesday, a few isolated showers and storms will reappear with the
heating of the afternoon. We will be watching two surface features by
Wednesday. One will be a surface front to our north. It will enhance
our shower and storms chances just a bit on Wednesday and Thursday.
This front will likely push through Central Alabama early on Friday,
shoving the showers and storms to the south. This could also lead to
another nice weekend.

The other surface feature will be a front over the Gulf of Mexico.
That's the sort of thing can spin up an early season tropical cyclone.
No real signs of that in the week ahead, despite the fact that the
front will become a little more active over the relatively warm waters
of the Gulf by midweek. Hurricane season begins in the Atlantic basin
on Monday. Ana, Bill and Claudette will be the first three names up to
bat this year.

AMERICA'S FIRST TORNADO RESEARCHER: John Park Finley of the U.S. Army
Signal Corps was the first bonafide tornado researcher. In 1879, he
was assigned the task of researching tornado events across the Plains
of the United States. One of the tornadoes that he investigated was an
F4 that struck Delphos, KS on this date in 1879. It was one of over a
dozen major tornadoes that day.

A local newspaper would comment on Finley's investigation, stating its
skepticism that studying such storms would be of little benefit to
anyone who had gone through the storm or to anyone in the future.
Indeed, Finley's work was met with skepticism in wide quarters. He set
up a network of volunteer "tornado reporters" all across the
tornado-prone areas of the Plains and Midwest. He devised a set of
parameters for predicting when tornadoes were likely to occur. He even
issued the first tornado forecasts. But there was a significant
struggle over control of the weather part of the Signal Corps and
Finley was not in good favor with his superiors. Finley's impressive
research was pushed aside to be forgotten and he was reassigned to
other duties.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION VISIBLE TONIGHT: The ISS is very bright
now with its solar panels that are nearly as long as a football field.
Only the sun and moon are brighter right now. It will pass across the
sky starting in the north northwest at around 8:02 p.m. this evening.
It will take 8 and one half minutes to transit the sky. Check it out.

ON THIS DATE FIVE YEARS AGO: Harper County, Kansas was not the place
to be during the 2004 tornado season. On May 12th that year, a huge,
slow moving supercell thunderstorm produced at least ten tornadoes
across the county. The strongest was an F4 twister near the town of
Harper. Dramatic video was captured of a tornado lifting a house near
the town of Attica and disintegrating it in midair. The residents of
the house were fortunately in their basement and were not injured
seriously.

Then just seventeen days later, on this date, another supercell storm
produced as many as nine additional tornadoes across the county.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during either set of
tornadoes. I was fortunate to get the opportunity to see all of the
tornadoes live and in person on the second of my two tornado chasing
adventures.

...A Beautiful Weekend...

You deserve it. After seemingly endless wet and stormy weekends,
Central Alabama is finally going to be treated to a mainly dry
Saturday and Sunday. Make sure you get a chance to get out and enjoy
it.

COMFORTABLE START: Many locations across the area are starting off in
the 50s this morning. That's not exceptionally cool for late May, as
the average low for this time of year is 62 at the Birmingham
Airport. But we will take it as we get ready to move into a long, hot
summer. Mornings like this will be a distant memory as he head deep
into the Dog Days of July and August.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: After the nice start to the day, plentiful
sunshine will drive temperatures into the middle 80s today. These
readings will also be right around normal for the season. Skies will
become partly cloudy by afternoon, with fair weather cumulus clouds
giving the sky a bit of character. Tonight will feature skies that
will go clear with lows around 60.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow will start off sunny again, with partly cloudy skies
forming during the day. Highs will be a couple of degrees warmer,
with most places topping out in the upper 80s. A few spots will reach
90 degrees.

NEW WORK WEEK: The dry weather will continue into the first part of
next week. Monday will be mostly sunny and dry, with afternoon readings
pushing 90 degrees in many spots. We will re-introduce a small chance
of an afternoon storm on Tuesday as moisture levels rise. Widely
scattered showers and storms will be the rule on Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday as a weak boundary tries to edge into the area. The wild card
will be a potential low in the Gulf of Mexico. It does not appear
that it will have much of an impact on Alabama's weather, but it could
help the boundary filter further south into Alabama by Friday and
shove the showers toward the coast.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: Looks like only widely scattered storms by
next weekend. Highs will be in the middle 80s. Lows will be in the
lower and middle 60s.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION VISIBLE TONIGHT: The ISS is very bright
now with its solar panels that are nearly as long as a football
field. Only the sun and moon are brighter right now. It will pass

...Pleasant Dry Temperatures...

AFTERNOONS GETTING HOTTER: Well, maybe we should say afternoons will
be getting very warm. I like to reserve the word hot to 90 degrees or
higher. Meanwhile, let us enjoy some pleasantly cool nights and early
mornings as drier air has spread over most of the state. Dry air cools
off better at night, but it also warms up more in daytime, so we have
a wider fluctuation in day-to-night temperatures.

Clouds hung tough over extreme North Alabama much of today. As a
result, the temperature was only 60 in Haleyville early this afternoon
while down state the old thermometer was mostly in the 80s. By
daybreak Saturday, we should have some upper 50s over North and
Central Alabama and mostly in the 60s down south.

Our high temperatures across Central Alabama will be in the very warm
upper 80s Sunday and Monday and some places could even reach 90 on
both of those days. The lower humidity will help.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We did not mention an outside chance of a shower about
Tuesday. We will have widely scattered to scattered showers and
thunderstorms showing up on Wednesday and Thursday and probably
extending into Friday. Another cool front is expected to reach North
Alabama on Thursday with a tendency to stall over the central part of
the state on Friday.

OUR WET MONTH OF MAY: Just about all of Alabama has had a lot more
rain than usual for the month of May. At some point Monday, I will try
to post a list of the rain totals for the entire month and how many
days had measurable rain. For example, Weaver in Calhoun County had
measurable rain on all but 8 days so far in May with a total of 6.15
inches. Up in the Tennessee Valley, Decatur has had measurable rain
for 19 days with 11.53 inches total.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Looks good if you do not mind a rather warm
afternoon each day. It should stay mostly sunny through Monday and
maybe Tuesday with highs between 86 and 89. The humidity will be a
little lower than usual and nights will be pleasant.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK: That has been in progress all this week
because we are rapidly approaching the official beginning of hurricane
season Monday. That is sort of an arbitrary date, because over many
years you have about an equal chance of a tropical system being in
progress on May 28 or June 5—just to use some examples. The NWS is
looking for an average season this year. Nothing to compare with the
2005 hurricane season when there were 27 named storms—an all-time
record. The NHC ran out of names and used Greek letters for the last
six.

GLOBAL ROAMING: We finally got a snow measurement from Whittier,
Alaska this morning. They still have 7 inches of the ground. Just for
fun we have been speculating when all their snow would be gone after
having over 100 inches during the winter and spring. Cold temperatures
this morning included 31 in Yellowstone National Park and 21 in
Shishmaref, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have a vivid, overactive, childlike
imagination somewhat like a fourth grader. As I was walking early this
morning with Little Miss Molly, I was wondering what this world would
be like if it was populated entirely by dogs and no humans. I feel
like there would be no wars, no economic downturns—you name it. I do
not know how to explain this, but when Little Miss Molly goes to the
bathroom, she scratches the ground. Sometimes what she just did
becomes airborne and a small part of that bounced off my shoulder this
morning. I always thought dogs were trying to cover it up, but folks
tell me that they are trying to claim territory. Life goes on. Have a
great weekend.

...A Chance To Dry Out...

DRY DAYS RETURN: Alabama will get a good chance to dry out in coming
days as continental air is now in place across our state. We expect a
partly sunny sky today with a high in the low 80s. Dewpoints will
continue to drop, and the humidity will be considerably lower than
recent days. While a rogue shower is not totally out of the question
somewhere this afternoon, most of the state will be dry.

NICE WEEKEND: Dry weather is the story for the weekend, with mostly
sunny warm days and clear pleasant nights. The high tomorrow will be
in the mid 80s, followed by upper 80s Sunday. Humidity levels will
remain fairly low making the warmth more comfortable. The dry weather
will continue into Monday. A few widely scattered showers could show
up Tuesday afternoon, and then typical early June weather is likely
for the rest of the week with some risk of an afternoon shower or
storm each day in scattered spots.

TROPICS: The first tropical depression of the season formed yesterday
in the Atlantic, well east of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There
is a brief window for the system to attain tropical storm status, but
it will move into colder water later today, and will be come a sub-
tropical type system over the North Atlantic over the weekend. The
system is moving northeast, and is no threat to land. If by chance
this one becomes a tropical storm, the name will be Ana. The 2009
hurricane season officially begins Monday (June 1).

HURRICANE AWARENESS WEEK: Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed the week
of May 24-30, 2009, as Hurricane Preparedness Week in Alabama. The
National Weather Service, in cooperation with the Alabama Emergency
Management Agency, takes time during this important week to draw
attention to the threat of hurricanes. During Hurricane Preparedness
Week residents both near the coast, as well as those in interior
locations, should review preparedness plans and be ready for the next
Gulf coast hurricane. Tropical systems can be a big issue even here
across the northern half of the state due to flooding, and the
possibility of tornadoes in the spiral bands. Also, gradient winds can
knock down thousands of trees if a significant hurricane is involved.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year is 26.49"w, and
represents a surplus of 1.71". The rain total for the month of May is
an impressive 6.20". The rain total in Mobile is almost identical;
they have recorded 26.71" since January 1.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Marion, Illinois was devastated by a killer
tornado. 10 deaths, 181 injured. 2-inch hail fell at Louisville and
Columbus OH had a wind gust to 76 mph.

...Heading Toward A Dry Weekend...

REST FOR THE WEARY OF THUNDERSTORMS: Not quite yet. We will still
have a chance of a shower or thunderstorm into this evening awaiting a
weak cool front pushing east across Mississippi. There is an outside
chance that a few of those could become severe. However, the better
ingredients (especially aloft) for a storm to become severe will
mostly be east and SE of I-59. Extensive weather analysis this morning
pointed to the best place for development was in that general area.
That does not mean that we cannot get a few storms developing over on
the west side of the state. Early this afternoon a line of showers
developed quickly right along I-59 from NE Jefferson County all the
way to Ft. Payne. A few of those were heavy, especially over North
Etowah County and DeKalb County.

A MUCH NICER WEEKEND: Slightly cooler and drier air will reach
Central Alabama later this evening and by daybreak temperatures should
drop to near 63. The dew point, which was around 70 in Birmingham
early this afternoon, will fall all the way to the 50s later tomorrow
and even into the low 50s on Saturday. Translation: lower humidity
that you will really notice. We think our cooler morning will be
Saturday morning with upper 50s the general rule. May see some low
temperatures as low as 54 to 56 in the NE Alabama valleys. We believe
that both Saturday and Sunday will feature mostly sunshine and
probably much of Monday.

We have dropped the mention of showers for Friday, although we cannot
rule out a rogue shower in the area Friday morning.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: There will probably be quite an influx of
people along the Alabama/NW Florida coast over the weekend with school
out in many areas. We look for few, if any, showers tomorrow and
almost all sunshine Saturday and Sunday. The humidity will be lower
over the weekend also and both Saturday and Sunday morning will be
pleasantly cool to start the day. Dry air heats better in the daytime
and cools better at night, so the old thermometer may make an effort
to reach 88 or 90 at some point over the weekend, but the lower
humidity will help.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Alaska is having it pretty good lately as far as
temperatures are concerned. The coldest in that big state this morning
was only 25 at Anaktuvuk Pass. It was a pleasant 78 yesterday
afternoon at Eagle. That place is notably cold spot for Alaska. They
had 50 below zero or colder several times this past winter. No snow
depth reports from Whittier in nearly a week, so we may have to
abandon our little game guessing when it would melt down to zero. The
warmest in the good old USA yesterday was 113 in Death Valley. The
first Tropical Depression of the season formed off the Mid-Atlantic
coast. At midday, it was located about 310 miles south of Providence,
Rhode Island and about 635 miles SW of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was
moving NE at 17 with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. This early
depression in expected to become Tropical Storm Ana over the next day
or so and then weaken or dissipate over colder waters by Saturday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Here is hoping that we do not get many
storms this evening. I had a nice little talk with Little Miss Molly
this morning as I passed through the living area to get coffee and she
looked up at me with wishful eyes. With sunny dry weather over the
weekend, I assured her that we would go on some long walks, especially
early in the morning, and I would have at least 5 ballgames with her
all of which would go extra innings. She wagged her tail. I wonder if
she understood.

...A Few Strong Storms Today...

DRY AIR GETTING CLOSER: We will have one more day with a humid airmass
in place across our state, and with the daytime heating process, and
an approaching surface boundary, more showers and storms will fire up
across the state today. Most of them will come during the afternoon
and evening hours, and like yesterday, some of the storms will be
strong with potential for gusty winds and some hail. The showers and
storms will end soon after sunset.

Drier air begins to move into the state late tonight and tomorrow, and
it looks like most Alabama communities will be dry for a change. The
chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow is only about one in ten.

DRY WEEKEND: The dry takes over for the weekend, and we continue to
forecast mostly sunny days and clear nights with lower humidity levels
and cooler nights. Most places will be in the upper 50s day daybreak
Saturday; not bad for a late May morning in Alabama. Afternoons will
be warm, with mid 80s on Saturday, followed by upper 80s Sunday. But,
the lower humidity levels will make those temperatures feel a little
more comfortable.

WEDNESDAY'S STORMS: A number of thunderstorms over Alabama reached
severe limits yesterday afternoon; a number of trees were blown down
in Double Springs. Flooding was a problem in Sumter County; one road
intersection in the community of Sumterville was washed out, and
marble sized hail was seen in Linden, in Marengo County. In Lamar
County, a thunderstorm produced quarter sized hail near Vernon. Flash
flood warnings was issued for a number of counties over the Tennessee
Valley, where rain amounts over three inches were reported.

DID YOU KNOW? Alabama's "wet microburst" season begins June 1;
afternoon storms on a summer day at times have the potential to
produce small areas of intense straight line winds than can produce
damage much like a small tornado.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Oklahoma soaked by very heavy rains at the end
of the month. As much as 13 inches of rain fell across parts of
central Oklahoma, resulting in disastrous flash floods that caused $65
million in damage. Several thousand people had to be evacuated from
their homes, including some by helicopter.

...A Break In The Wet Weather...

A SUNNY WEEKEND: We are headed toward a change in our weather that
would at least give us a couple of days break without rain and also,
over the weekend, lots of sunshine and lower humidity. Before we get
the wagon ahead of the horse, we must mention some scattered showers
and thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening and some more on
Thursday. So far today, the storms have gotten off to a slower start
than on recent days. However, showers and storms were becoming more
numerous over South/Central Alabama this afternoon and some others
were beginning to form over West Alabama.

We have a cool front involved in this changing weather. That front was
over Arkansas this afternoon. By daybreak tomorrow, the front will
approach the NW corner of Alabama and move through much of the state
by late Thursday night. For tomorrow, the scattered showers and storms
may be a little more numerous over the east and SE part of the state
and there is a slight chance that a few of those could be strong to
severe. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a Slight Risk area
mostly for Central and SE Alabama and mostly east and south of
Birmingham. There could be a few isolated showers around on Friday,
but clearing weather is expected Friday night. High temperatures will
back off to the low 80s Friday and you will notice a drop in the
humidity.

THE WEEKEND: Very nice weather to end the month of May with mostly
sunshine both days and lower humidity. We should see some low
temperatures in the upper 50s Saturday morning and possibly Sunday
morning.
RAIN AMOUNTS: Some good thunderstorms yesterday and last evening--
something that has become routine lately. A few sample rain amounts:
1.41 at Ft. Payne Airport, 1.35 at Clanton, 1.37 at Selma, 1.15 at
Gadsden and 1.28 at Helena.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK: Only 5 more days until the official
beginning of hurricane season. The emphasis today is on inland
flooding. You do not have to have a hurricane to get that. A tropical
storm or even a tropical depression can dump unbelievable amounts of
rain inland. A case in point was a few years ago when Houston received
30 inches.

A HISTORIC MAY 27: For some reason, this date has been notable for
tornadoes in Alabama. We all know the story of the Brent tornado on
this date in 1973. The heart of the town was almost destroyed with the
F4. It first touched down north of Demopolis and crossed the SE part
of Greensboro. 5 people died in Brent. Way back in 1917, also on May
27, a number of tornadoes touched down in NW Jefferson, Walker and
Cullman Counties. There were 27 fatalities and 100 injuries. The
communities of Sayre and Bradford were very hard hit with dozens of
homes destroyed. 9 people died in Sayre and 17 in Bradford. It was
also an F4. There were so many trees uprooted that the only way word
could get out
was to send runners on foot.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I wish you could see Little Miss Molly
when she is petitioning for a ballgame which is quite often. She can
hear the slight squeak in my office chair when I get up and head to
the kitchen for more coffee having to pass through the large living
area, which she controls. She will immediately plant herself in the
middle of the room looking up at me with her tail slowly swishing and
a real begging look in her eyes. Most of the time I put down my cup
and get on the imaginary pitcher mound and throw many balls at her.
Life goes on. J. B. Elliott

...Drier Air Arrives Late In The Week...

ANOTHER SHOWERY DAY: Not much change in the weather today; a blanket
of moist air covers Alabama and the Deep South this morning, and once
again we expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms across
the state. While no severe weather is expected, like recent days a few
tropical downpours are likely. Away from the showers, we expect a few
intervals of sunshine with a high in the low to mid 80s and very high
humidity values.

TO THE NORTHWEST: A nice surge of drier air has moved into the
northern U.S., and that is moving in our general direction. We will
hang on to the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow,
but by Friday the chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one
in eight with a
partly sunny sky.

A DRY WEEKEND: I think most folks are ready for this; it looks like we
will enjoy a totally rain-free weekend with lower humidity levels and
cooler nights. Lots of sunshine is expected Saturday and Sunday with
highs mostly in the mid 80s; early morning temperatures should reach
the pleasant upper 50s. Some low to mid 50s are possible for the
cooler valleys across the northern half of the state.

TUESDAY'S SHOWERS: Some of the heavier rain totals across Alabama
yesterday included 1.46" at Hayden, 1.16" at Inverness, 1.09" at
Bessemer, and 1.01" at Concord. Birmingham's rain surplus for 2009 is
now up to 1.94".

ON THIS DATE IN 1973: A large EF4 tornado cut a 135-mile path across
central Alabama. Hardest hit was the town of Brent, where 5 people
perished and 90 percent of the town was demolished. Seven people died
along the path of the twister. Cancelled checks from Greensboro were
found at Gadsden, over 100 miles away. The tornado also destroyed the
old National Weather Service radar station near Brent, which was
Alabama's primary radar in the 1970s. Another killer tornado struck
Center Point on the northeast side of Birmingham, killing one man.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: An F5 tornado that struck the town of Jarrell,
Texas, killing 27 people out of 1319 residents. The tornado was 3/4 of
a mile wide and tracked across the ground for 7.6 miles. Double Creek
Estates, a subdivision of Jarrell, was literally wiped off the map
with all 38 homes and several mobile homes destroyed.

IT CAN BE HOT IN MAY: The year 1962 was one of the hottest Mays on
record in Alabama; daily maximum temperature records were established
on 14 days, with the heat peaking at 99 degrees on May 28. Our
earliest day with triple digit heat, by the way, came on June 5, 1985
when the high was exactly 100 degrees in Birmingham.

...Are You Tired of Rain?...

LOOKING FOR A BREAK: Two years ago about this time, people were
literally begging for rain. When I was at church last Sunday morning,
no less than 25 people said it is time to stop. I told them we had the
magic ingredients to stop the rain by pushing certain buttons on our
computer. Of course, they knew I was kidding.

But we do have a break coming up. We have been looking toward our
friends in the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming urging them to push some
cooler air south. We do look for a cool front to approach NW Alabama
very early Thursday. We will still have some scattered showers and
thunderstorms on Thursday, however, on Friday only a slight chance of
showers and storms and mostly in the morning.

A DIFFERENT WEEKEND: We sure have had some rainy Sundays, but this
time Saturday and Sunday will bring us model weather with lower
humidity, mostly sunshine and pleasantly cool early mornings. Here in
Central Alabama, low temperatures over the weekend will be in the
upper 50s and highs only in the low to mid 80s, but the lower humidity
will make those mid 80s seem comfortable. Meanwhile, we will still
have to deal with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms until
they thin out Friday.

SPOTLIGHTING: SCROUGEOUT That is a tiny community in NE Etowah County
atop Lookout Mountain, but still in a little depression or valley that
is called Scrougeout. Legend has it that there were once two stores in
that small community. The owners got into a price war and both had to
close. The saying was, they scrouged each other out of town. The
community is located at an elevation between 900 and 950 feet. That
means on cold winter nights, with a clear sky, they can have some
pretty low temperatures. Vic Bell is the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher that
lives there and he
gives us these interesting rain amounts. No drought at all in that area.

11.13 inches so far in May
13.65 so far in 2009
77.58 in the last 365 days beginning on May 25, 2009

GLOBAL ROAMING: There was widespread frost in the NE this morning
including Upper New York State into Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
The temperature dropped to 23 at Island Pond, Vermont and 26 at
Saranac Lake, New York. The coldest in the lower 48 this morning was
22 at Berlin, New Hampshire and 25 at Barter Island, Alaska. The snow
sure is melting fast in Alaska. Fairbanks reported a high of 80
yesterday and no snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With our daughter and son-in-law and our
grandkids with us, we have lots of help walking Little Miss Molly and
I welcome it. Night before last, my daughter took Molly out the back
door for a walk. Neither of them at first saw the Community Rabbit
cuddled in the corner of the yard. When Molly saw her, it was like the
shuttle being launched. She almost jerked my daughter down. Meanwhile
the leash got wrapped around my large rain gauge and it was almost
overturned. I would have lost the daily rain amount. No way to predict
what happens the minute Molly goes out. Life goes on. J. B. Elliott

...Tropical Air Hangs Around...

VERY MUGGY: Not much change in the overall weather situation for
Alabama today. The surface low that moved inland from the Gulf of
Mexico this past weekend is spinning away over the southwest corner of
Missouri, and to the east of that circulation a huge mass of tropical
moisture covers much of the eastern U.S., including Alabama. This
means another warm, humid day with scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms. While the majority of the showers will come during the
afternoon and evening hours, we can't rule out a few morning or late
night showers with this kind of airmass. Severe weather isn't
expected, but like recent days, the stronger storms will produce lots
of rain in a very short amount of time. Away from the showers, the sun
should peek out from time to time, with afternoon highs in the low 80s
for most places.

This kind of weather will continue through Thursday, with a good
chance of showers and storms in the very moist environment. But, drier
air begins moving into Alabama on Friday, and by then the showers
should become more widely spaced. Then, over the weekend, it looks
like dry air will actually win the battle, and we are forecasting
mostly sunny days and fair nights Saturday and Sunday. Humidity levels
this weekend will be lower, and nights a little cooler.

MEMORIAL DAY SHOWERS: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included
2.95" at Mobile, 1.16" at Concord, .91" at Gadsden, .77" at Bessemer,
and .09" at the Birmingham Airport. The official rain total for 2009
in Birmingham is 25.96", giving us a rain surplus for the year of 1.56".

DID YOU KNOW? In order for a thunderstorm to be severe, winds must be
58 mph or greater, or hail must be 3/4" in diameter (penny size) or
larger. Thunderstorms during the summer in Alabama are rarely severe
in a classic sense, but occasionally they do produce "wet
microbursts", or localized areas of damaging wind that can be over 70
mph.The most dangerous element of thunderstorms on a summer afternoon
in Alabama is lightning, often called the "underrated killer" because
it doesn't get as much attention as tornadoes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1917: For many years, it was believed that a single
tornado remained on the ground for seven hours and 293 miles and 7
hours 20 minutes across Illinois and Indiana to become the longest
continuous path tornado ever in U.S. history. But it now appears that
a family of as many as 8 separate tornadoes caused the path.
Nonetheless, the devastation was still spectacular and terrible.
Mattoon IL and Charleston IL were hard hit, with the F4 twister
cutting a path right through the center of the latter. 101 people were
killed and 600 injured. Debris from Mattoon was carried 50 miles.

...No Dry Land in Alabama...

WHAT DROUGHT? That may be a semi-smart aleck question to ask because
we cannot take for granted that we will not drift again into a drought
situation. We see no evidence of that now.

I doubt if there is a single acre of dry land anywhere in Alabama at
this time due to a literal parade of showers and storms sent inland by
our old friend, the Gulf of Mexico.

That is what is underway today. By this afternoon, showers and storms
were becoming numerous down state and they were moving almost due
north. Others will be forming as the afternoon goes on. Look out for a
number of Significant Weather Alerts this afternoon and evening. That
is the method by which the NWS calls our attention to some strong
storms that may not reach the severe category. Those can still produce
hail, strong gusty winds and very heavy rain.

The low-pressure area that moved out of the North Gulf of Mexico moved
through Mississippi over the weekend and this afternoon was centered
near where Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma join. It continues to pull
in a long train of deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico creating sort
of a shower and thunderstorm autobahn through our state and other
nearby areas. It is believed that 2 to 4 inches of rain fell Sunday
afternoon over the west Cullman County.

WHEN DO WE GET A BREAK? By Friday, the showers and storms should thin
out considerably. At this time, Saturday and Sunday look very pleasant
with lower humidity, considerable sunshine and early morning lows in
the upper 50s.

STORY OF A FANTASTIC RAIN AMOUNT: It happened at Scrougeout in the NE
corner of Etowah County. Vic Bell, the 33/40 Skywatcher, reported 2
more inches yesterday bringing the total to 11 inches so far in May
and 37.52 inches in 2009. The most astounding number if 77.43 inches
in the last 365 days dating back to May 25, 2008. Anniston has
received over 7 inches this month and 17 inches in the last three
months.

HURRICANE AWARENESS WEEK: That is going on this week and the NWS in a
special statement highlighted the storm surge in the release today. A
storm surge can cause just as much damage as the wind. A wall of water
moving inland can cause great devastation.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Would you believe a Freeze Warning for Upstate New
York and New England for tonight. Widespread frost is expected. A low
of 25 is expected in Saranac Lake, New York. At midday, it was 36 on
Mt. Washington, New Hampshire with west wind gusting to 64. Daytona
got over 20 inches of rain is 6 days from this latest storm system. At
Ormond Beach, there was over 27 inches during the same timeframe.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our two great grandchildren, ages 2 and
1, were here over the weekend. If anything, they have more energy than
Little Miss Molly. Our large living area literally seemed like Times
Square in New York City. Because of all the noise and commotion,
Little Miss Molly spent the entire weekend trying to stay out of the
way. She even adopted a couple of new safe places, which I am sure she
will use those also next time it thunders. I bet that little girl
walked 3 miles just inside the house. Life goes on.

...Happy Memorial Day!...

This is the day that we remember all of those brave servicemen and
women that have sacrificed their lives for our country. Originally
known as Decoration Day, it was originally created to commemorate
those who died during the Civil War. It was expanded to include all
American casualties in any war after World War I.

FOR YOUR HOLIDAY: Today will look a lot like Sunday across Central
Alabama. The day should start out cloudy again, with a few showers
and storms around. Sunshine should peek through in spots by mid-
morning, with some clearing in most spots through the late morning.
Temperatures will warm into the lower 80s in most spots by afternoon.
Showers and storms will get a shot in the arm from the daytime
heating, with rain chances a little better than one in two at your
favorite spot. Enjoy your Memorial Day holiday and have a great time
today!

TUESDAY: Tuesday will be a carbon copy of today, with cloudy skies
to greet the day, some sunshine by late monring and a rash of showers
and storms popping up with the heating of the day. Highs will again
be in the lower 80s.

WEDNESDAY: Rain chances will back off a bit as we head into
midweek. Expect a little more in the way of sunshine and fewer
showers. Temperatures will remain seasonably warm. Good weather for
the Rickwood Classic.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: By Thursday, the low pressure system that is
the remnants of our little tropical low will be passing to the north
of Alabama. This will push a cold front our way. Look for elevated
showers and storm chances again both days, with the front reluctantly
sliding through Friday evening.

THE WEEKEND: Rain chances will back off a bit as we head into
midweek. Expect a little more in the way of sunshine and fewer
showers. Temperatures will remain seasonably warm.

VOODOOLAND: After the front passes through, some relatively drier
air will flow into Alabama, putting an effective end to our showery
conditions. It looks like drier, more summerlike conditions will
prevail through much of the following week until another storm system
affects Alabama around the 6th and 7th.

INTERESTING FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK: Two tornadoes struck
the town of Blackwell Oklahoma within a few minutes during
the evening, killing 19 and injuring 500 persons. The same
thunderstorm later produced a tornado that almost completely destroyed
the town of Udall, Kansas. Eighty persons were killed in Udall along
with 270 that were injured. The casualties constituted over half of
the town's population. This was the last tornado in the United States
to cause 50 or more death in a single town. A tornado watch had been
in effect earlier in the evening, but it was cancelled about an hour
and a half before the tornado struck the town at 10:30 p.m. The
tornado destroyed the town's new high school and the city water tower.

...Showers For Memorial Day...

We started discussing the possibility of a low in the Gulf nearly ten
days ago, and the scenario pretty much played out as expected. That
low is moving into southeastern Arkansas early this afternoon. Here
in Alabama, we find ourselves in the moist, tropical airmass east of
the weak cyclone. The inflow overnight organized bands of showers
from south to north that produced some brief heavy rain and some
lightning. There was some concern about rotating updrafts, but
nothing materialized.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Those feeder bands will continue to produce showers
much of today. The actual bands will translate westward slowly with
the low. The heaviest rain during the morning was over eastern
sections and that band will move westward through the day. A second
rain band over West Alabama will probably energize as sun peeks out
between the feeder bands. There is marginal shear for rotating
updrafts over about the northeastern third of the state, generally
north of a line from Red Bay to Birmingham to east of Montgomery.
This means that a pop up tornado warning or two would not be a
surprise, although significant problems are not anticipated. This
tropical airmass is very efficient, and the rainfall will be heavy,
even in showers that don't look like much on radar. Many locations
could see another three quarters of an inch to over an inch of rain
today and tonight.

MEMORIAL DAY: We will still be in a tropical airmass tomorrow. It
should start cloudy and there could be a few nocturnal showers
around. The sun will peek through at times during the morning and the
mercury will rise into the lower 80s in most spots. A few 70s might
be recorded in wetter spots. Showers and storms will begin to develop
in earnest during the late morning and continue through the
afternoon. Rain chances tomorrow will be a little less than today,
with about a 1 in 2 chance you will get wet.

REST OF THE WEEK: What you see on Monday is about what you will get
on Tuesday, with a mix of a little sun and mostly clouds and scattered
showers and storms popping up at about anytime, but especially with
the heating of the day. Highs will be in the lower 80s. Wednesday,
Thursday and Fridayshould feature partly sunny skies and mainly
afternoon and evening storms, which is good news for the Rickwood
Classic, with a first pitch at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday at America's
oldest ballpark in Birmingham's West End. Look for a little cool
front late on Friday that could bring in a little drier air for the
weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A month long heat wave continued to bake India
with temperatures as high as 124 degrees F. The state of Andrha
Pradesh as hardest hits with reports that as many as 624 people had
died in the heat wave by the 24th. Some reports placed the number
over 1000. Meteorologists blamed the excessive heat on hot, dry
northeasterly winds off of the desert regions. While some blamed it
on global warming, weather officials were quick to point out that heat
waves always precede the monsoons. In fact, it is the rising air of
the hot high pressure that draws the moisture-laden monsoon winds in
by early June in southern India and across the rest of the country in
the following weeks.
