===================================================================

A GOOD RAIN EVENT AHEAD: Thanks to some disturbances moving in from
the west, Alabama is in for a good rain event through much of
Saturday, including some locally heavy rain later tonight through
Saturday morning. There may be a few thunderstorms mixed in also. Many
sections of the state should get well over 1 inch of rain and some
places probably 2 inches. Here in Central Alabama, we estimate 1.50
inches occurring mainly tonight into early Saturday afternoon.

We are also going to have some cold air entering our weather picture
later in the weekend. It will also be a lot colder aloft. This will
lead to some unstable conditions to where we could see some snow
showers or flurries Sunday night and Monday morning. We do not see
accumulating snow. Tuesday brings sunshine, finally, with temperatures
dropping into the 20s early Tuesday morning.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks wet for at least part of the Alabama/Auburn
game in Tuscaloosa. We expect considerable rain continuing overnight
and through much of Saturday morning. There are indications that the
rain will decrease by mid-afternoon. So, there is an outside chance
that the 2:30 kick off and beyond could be dry, but we cannot
guarantee that. It is a very good idea to take your rain gear. The
game is televised on CBS. The temperature should be around 57 at kick
off and holding rather steady through the rest of the game. We can be
much more definite on that in later forecasts and especially by early
Saturday. For high school play off games tonight, most stadiums will
have rain with temperatures in the 50s.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Rain was widespread this afternoon, not only in
Central Alabama, but also extending westward through much of
Mississippi and into parts of Louisiana and East Texas. Much of that
was near a stationary front that extended from Central Alabama to East
Texas. A low-pressure area, forming along the front, will be in West
Alabama Saturday morning and crossing the state during the day. Colder
air will pour into the state behind that low and that will become
especially noticeable Sunday and Monday. It was 89 degrees at Alice in
South Texas Thanksgiving Day...the warmest in the country. Cold
temperatures this morning included 9 above in Valentine, Nebraska and
a bitter 35 below zero in Chandalar Lake, Alaska. Valdez, Alaska has
30 inches of snow on the ground. It was a bitter 65 below zero at
Summit on the Greenland icecap.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has apparently been
watching the news on TV. She seems to realize that there is a downturn
in the economy. For the first time since we have had her, when she got
back from her early morning walk, she went racing to the master
bedroom, hopped on the king-size bed and started digging under a pile
of blankets. She came running out of the room with a treat in her
mouth. She had stockpiled it. For Thanks-giving, we had 12 people in
the house with Molly and she insisted on greeting and playing with
everyone that came. When the day was over, she plopped down on the
carpet totally exhausted. She then slept 10 hours overnight. She is
back to normal and life goes on......

...Some Decent Rain...

MORE SUNSHINE STARTING TUESDAY: A band of showers more than 40 miles
wide was spreading east and SE across Alabama this afternoon ahead of
still another cold front. Surface winds were strong enough that a Lake
Wind Advisory is posted for most of the state. Gusts were expected to
be over 30 mph at times, but the wind will diminish tonight as colder
and drier air overspreads the state from the NW.

We hope to hear of some total rain amounts this evening between ½ and
1 inch, but most areas will not get that much. The ABC 33/40
Skywatcher for Bear Creek in NE Marion County reported 0.61 by early
this afternoon.

The showers were already ending by midafternoon over the extreme NW
part of the state. Most of the showers will be tapering off in the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden area by late this afternoon and early
this evening.

Look for sunny, breezy and cooler weather over the entire state
Tuesday. Brisk NW winds be between 10 and 20 mph and the humidity will
drop again. Across Central Alabama at daybreak it should be in the mid
30s with highs in the mid 50s. Wednesday morning will be our coldest
morning with upper 20s general and maybe some low to mid 20s in the
colder valleys of North and NE Alabama. Look for a quick warm up
Wednesday getting up to about 60 in the afternoon.

THANKSGIVING DAY: The weather looks very good. A chilly early
morning, but a milder afternoon with temperatures climbing into the
low to mid 60s. There is a chance that some showers could arrive
Thursday night, but the daytime should be dry.

END OF THE WEEK SHOWERS AND STORMS: This looks like our best chance
of getting some beneficial rain. While some of the showers may arrive
later Friday night, it looks like the most substantial ones (along
with some thunderstorms) will be on Friday and continuing Friday
night. Some areas of Alabama should get over 1 inch of rain with this
system.

WEEKEND WEATHER: It looks as if some showers will be persisting on
Saturday, at least into the morning hours. There is a very good chance
that they should be moving out in time for the Alabama/Auburn game in
Tuscaloosa. That is by no means definite, so we will be able to zoom
in on that with more accuracy by midweek.

GLOBAL ROAMING: I love our neighbor to the north although I have
never been to Canada, but I have been close. It is a big country
covering 9,970,610 square miles. That is slightly larger than the USA
mainly because we have Alaska thrown in. Canada holds the monopoly on
arctic air from about November through March. Maybe that is why a big
chunk of the country has a population of only about 1 person per
square mile. Today temperatures are running as much as 25 or 30 below
in the northern part of that country and most of the nation is snow
covered. The bitter cold extends across the North Pole into Northern
Russia where temperatures were as low as 48 below zero today. The
coldest in Alaska was 33 below at Buckland and in the lower 48 1 above
in Yellowstone Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Miss Molly and I take a walk now,
we walk mostly on a carpet of leaves. In some ways, the landscape is
prettier now with so many leaves on the ground. I sure made Molly
angry with me yesterday. She was poised in her lookout position on the
back of the couch looking out the back window to protect us from
intruders. I walked by and touched her forehead with my forehead just
to tell her I love her. That was just enough to knock her completely
off the couch. I never heard such a loud groan as she fell, but she
landed on all four feet and did not get hurt. She gave me a mad look—
the only time I have ever seen her look like that. I loved her a lot
and we made up. Life goes on.

...Clouds Hang Tough...

That cloud deck that slunk in here overnight has already outworn its
welcome on this Sunday afternoon. The mid-level moisture extends back
into Texas and isn't going anywhere fast, so a mostly cloudy day is
now expected across Central Alabama. An approaching front will bring
showers to western sections as early as late tonight.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: With mostly cloudy skies, highs this afternoon
will edge into the lower and middle 50s for the most part. By
tonight, a strong upper level disturbance will be sweeping southeast
out of the Upper Midwest. It will spin up a surface low over the
Great Lakes. This will push a cold front towards Alabama. Ahead of
this front, showers will enter Northwest Alabama late tonight and push
across the state during the day on Monday. The rain will end by
evening and skies should clear by Tuesday morning. Seasonably cool
and dry conditions will prevail through Thanksgiving.

LATE WEEK STORM SYSTEM: By the time you sit down to turkey on
Thursday, showers and storms will be building to our west and they
will be heading our way. Clouds will increase steadily over Alabama
during the day and a rogue shower could pop up late in the day.
Showers will move into the state from the west late Thursday night.
This system increasingly looks like it could be a good rainmaker for
us, and it will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms. Everything
will depend on the track of the surface low that develops. Doesn't
look like anything will get out of hand, but we will monitor the
possibility of severe weather as it moves our way. Rainfall amounts
are looking like they will average an inch or more.

NEXT WEEKEND AND BEYOND: We need the rain, but we would just as soon
get it out of the way before the Iron Bowl. Rain and storms could
last well into Friday night, with some lingering light rain into the
morning hours on Saturday. The game is at 2:30 p.m., so hopefully,
the precipitation will be out of the way. It will be breezy, cool and
mostly cloudy during the game with temperatures in the 50s. No model
consistency in the 8-15 day time period. Wait. Model consistency in
the 8-15 day time period. That's an oxymoron. Sorry. Just suffice
to say that it could be interesting.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL ALERT: No really big problems expected this year. The
lake effect snow belt regions will see some heavy snows Tuesday and
Wednesday. A storm system over the Northeast will bring mostly heavy
rain to coastal areas of New England, with heavy snow over inland
areas. Big snows could affect New England again by Sunday. Over the
Southeast, heavy rain and storms will be the problem Friday into
Saturday. Elsewhere, may your travels be smooth!

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Hurricane Iwa struck the Hawaiian islands of
Niah, Kauai and Oahu. Winds gusted above 130 mph and sustained winds
were near 100 mph. Honolulu had gust to 81 mph. Total damage was well
over $200 million. Iwa was the first hurricane to strike Hawaii in 23
years since Dot had hit the islands in August 1959.
