GOOD AFTERNOON: Our friendly Friday front lies along the Gulf Coast this afternoon. After a comfortable morning with a little fog draped around the area, temperatures have warmed into the 80s across the area. Skies have been mostly sunny. Dew points are only slightly lower than yesterday, despite the front. Readings tonight will be comfortably near normal with mostly clear skies. Sunday will be a few degrees warmer than today, and a few locations may see their warmest temperatures so far this year. Another cold front will be heading our way out of the northwest tomorrow. This will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms our way tomorrow night into the day on Monday.

WEEK AHEAD: Those showers and storms will gradually clear the area by Monday night, setting the stage for some fine weather Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be seasonably mild with a northerly breeze. Moisture levels will pick up on Thursday as high pressure slides to our east. A front will also be approaching from the northwest. Showers and thunderstorms will again move across the area on Thursday, lasting into early Friday. We will have to keep shower in the forecast into Saturday also.

YO, ADRIAN! The first named tropical cyclone of the 2005 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season formed this week and made an unusual landfall on the coast of the Central American nation of El Salvador late Thursday night. The storm was weakening at landfall, and it weakened rapidly as it moved over the mountainous terrain of neighboring Honduras. There was some thought that it might regenerate over the waters of the southwestern Caribbean as it moved northeast. There is an area of thunderstorms on satellite photos over the Caribbean this morning that is the remnants of Adrian, but it looks unlikely that the storm will reform. There is a low near Cuba this morning, but that system is not associated with Adrian’s remnants.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Golfers participating in a golf tournament on the Majestic Golf Course in Hartland, MI received an urgent message on the Global Positioning Units on their carts. The message, replayed from the clubhouse, was that a tornado was bearing down on the course. Most of the golfers made it to safety in the clubhouse, although some had to take shelter out on the course. Only one golfer suffered a minor injury. The F2 tornado damaged 70 cars in the parking lot along with numerous golf carts and a pontoon boat. The clubhouse received minor damage.

ON THIS DATE IN 1860: The Dutch government wanted weather reports for its port cities. They approached meteorologist Christopher Buys-Ballot. The weatherman used a network of observing stations reporting by telegraph. Although his network was sparse, Bays-Ballot had discovered a helpful weather maxim. To be named for him, the principle states that if an observer stands with the wind at his back in the northern Hemisphere, low pressure is to his or her left. Using this technique, an observer can detect and track the movement of low pressure systems even without a weather map.

...Nice Weekend In Store...

GOOD MORNING! After a stormy Friday here in Alabama, things are going to be tranquil comparatively all weekend. Get ready for lots of sunshine and mild temperatures today, but temperatures will be on the warm side on Sunday. A weak cold front will approach late on Sunday, increasing our clouds and bringing a small chance of an overnight shower. Behind the front, a northwesterly flow regime will be in power through midweek. Can’t rule out a passing thunderstorm complex, but we won’t put it in the forecast now. Cooler air behind the front will keep our temperatures closer to normal through most o the coming week. Tomorrow’s readings in the mid to upper 80s may be the warmest we see for a while.

RECORD BIN: Several record high temperatures were set on Friday to the west of Alabama. Way out west, Casper WY tied their record high for the date with 87F. Sizzling weather in Arizona, where the reading of 105F broke the old record for the date by three degrees. It was 106F in Phoenix (also a record.) Closer to home, the 95F in Little Rock was a new record for the date. Memphis recorded a new record with 94F.

DEADLY PHENOMENON: Do you know that this natural phenomenon kills more people each year than flooding and lightning? It kills more than tornadoes and hurricanes combined. A hint: if you are heading to the beach in the next few weeks, you need to be prepared for it. What is it? Find out all weekend in the Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: The tiny island of Tristan da Cunha is regarded to be the most remote inhabited island on earth. It is located in the South Atlantic Ocean, 1,000 miles from South Africa and 1,000 miles from South America. A territory of the United Kingdom, the volcanic island is only 38 square miles. Much of the island was destroyed by a very strong non-tropical cyclone on this date in 2001. The storm struck with winds of 120 mph, damaging or destroying nearly every building on the island. Reportedly, all 300 residents suffered property damage.

CHEER UP, WEATHER WILL GET BETTER: Some big thunderstorms were roaming the Alabama countryside this afternoon and a few of them prompted Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. The thunderstorms were moving generally toward the south and SE as a weak cold front approached from the north. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continued for at least the north half of the state.
Here in Central Alabama, the thunderstorms will be ending this evening as drier air slowly spreads in from the north. Until that time, some communities will get locally heavy rain. As of 1:30 this afternoon, we did not have any confirmed reports of damage in Alabama.

A GREAT WEEKEND: Good news for the Bruno’s Memorial Classic. The weekend looks dry with fairly comfortable temperatures, especially on Saturday, with highs in the lower 80s and lower humidity. It will warm up a few degrees on Sunday. (See our day-by-day forecast.)

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: After a few morning showers on Saturday, looks great with highs in the mid 80s. Mostly sunshine on Sunday. The water temperature just offshore is about 80.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Feel a little strange to discuss tropical weather this early, but this is a most unusual situation. Hurricane Adrian moved ashore in El Salvador and was moving across Northern Honduras this afternoon as a tropical depression. It will move out into the Western Caribbean and then head toward Central Cuba. It is uncertain if it will regain tropical storm strength.

QUICK CLEAN-UP NOTES: Lots of flash flooding overnight in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and parts of Tennessee. Six inches of rain NE of Nashville, Indiana including 3.28 inches in one hour. Persons had to be rescued. Numerous county roads were blocked by high water across Kentucky...Louisville 2.89 inches of rain...hottest Thursday was 107 in Death Valley...for the second morning in a row, Saranac Lake, New York was the cold spot with 26.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As little Miss Molly and I took our first walk this morning, there was a very interesting “incident.” Two birds on the ground in the hedgerow got into a fist fight. Little Miss Molly performed the task of a 9-pound police dog, became airborne and landed right on top of the birds. They immediately quit fighting and flew away. Sure was funny...a nice note from Juannelle Ritchie. She works with a professional pet sitter and wanted to suggest that I be very careful in letting little Miss Molly dive into a hedgerow—not just because of snakes. Juannelle knows of a case where a cocker spaniel did that and something poked her in the. Unfortunately, now that little dog is blind in that eye. She reminds us all that our pets cannot tell us if they have a boo-boo, so we need to be extra careful...it had to happen. Little Miss Molly finally discovered my private corner next to the bookshelves and she has semi taken over my easy chair where I get my education, but life goes on.
