...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY
MORNING FOR NORTHEAST ALABAMA AND PARTS OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE
TENNESSEE...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WATCH. THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF
ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF OF AN INCH FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY
MORNING OVER THE AREA EAST OF I-65.

HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE MID ATLANTIC STATES WILL ENABLE COLD DRY AIR
TO PUSH INTO PORTIONS OF NORTH ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE
TONIGHT AND THROUGH THE DAY ON FRIDAY. A DEVELOPING STORM SYSTEM OVER
THE SOUTHERN PLAINS WILL MOVE EAST DURING THE DAY FRIDAY...SPREADING
WARM MOIST AIR AHEAD OF IT. AS THE MOISTURE DEEPENS AND OVERRUNS THE
SHALLOW COLD AIR MASS IN PLACE...PRECIPITATION WILL START AS EARLY AS
FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN NORTHERN ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL START AS A LIGHT MIX OF RAIN AND SLEET
FRIDAY AFTERNOON...BUT WITH GROUND TEMPERATURES RELATIVELY WARM...
ICE ACCUMULATION IS NOT EXPECTED AT FIRST. AS THE EVENING PROGRESSES
AND LOW-LEVEL TEMPERATURES DROP...A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN IS
POSSIBLE FOR SEVERAL HOURS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.
ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS TREE LIMBS...POWER LINES...BRIDGES...AND
OVERPASSES WILL ACCUMULATE ICE FIRST...FOLLOWED BY ACCUMULATIONS ON
ROADS.

THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR ICE ACCUMULATION WILL BE IN THE HILLS AND
MOUNTAINS WHERE TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN BELOW FREEZING LONGER THAN
IN THE LOWER AREAS.

REMEMBER THAT A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE
FOR HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO...COMMERCIAL RADIO OR TELEVISION
STATIONS...OR YOUR CABLE TELEVISION SERVICE PROVIDER FOR LATER
STATEMENTS CONCERNING THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER
EVENT.

COLD AIR MASS IN PLACE...PRECIPITATION WILL START AS EARLY AS FRIDAY
AFTERNOON IN NORTHERN ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL START AS A LIGHT MIX OF RAIN AND SLEET
FRIDAY AFTERNOON...BUT WITH GROUND TEMPERATURES RELATIVELY WARM...
NO ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED AT FIRST. AS THE EVENING PROGRESSES
AND LOW-LEVEL TEMPERATURES DROP...A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN IS
POSSIBLE FOR SEVERAL HOURS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.
ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS TREE LIMBS...POWER LINES...BRIDGES...AND
OVERPASSES WILL ACCUMULATE ICE FIRST...FOLLOWED BY ACCUMULATIONS ON
ROADS.

THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR ICE ACCUMULATION WILL BE IN THE HILLS AND
MOUNTAINS WHERE TEMPERATURES WILL BE BELOW FREEZING LONGER THAN IN
THE LOWER AREAS.

THERE COULD BE CHANGES IN THE TIMING AND PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS...
SO COUNTIES MAY BE ADDED OR REMOVED AS THE EVENT DRAWS CLOSER.

...Cooler Air Returns...

Daytime temperatures across Alabama today will be 10 to 15 degrees
cooler than those of yesterday as Polar air returns to the state. The trend
toward colder temperatures will continue through Saturday, and sets up an
interesting situation early in the weekend as a storm system approaches.

THE WEDGE: Cold air draining down the east slopes of the Appalachian
mountains will slip into east Alabama tomorrow and Saturday, with
temperatures expected to drop to near 30 degrees early Saturday. At the same
time, rain should widespread over much of the state, and some icing problems
are possible over parts of east and northeast Alabama in the wedge. Based on
the latest data, the greatest chance of freezing rain will come from about
midnight tomorrow night through 8:00 a.m. Saturday in areas east of a line
from Huntsville to Pell City to Alexander City.

The ground is relatively warm, so the main problem will be from ice
on bridges and other exposed surfaces. Temperatures should warm above
freezing by mid-morning, so any ice problems should be short-lived.

WET WEEKEND: While the rain should taper off Saturday evening, a
stronger system will bring more showers to the state by Sunday afternoon,
which will last at times into Monday of next week. Some strong thunderstorms
could be involved Sunday night or Monday, and severe weather cannot be ruled
out if unstable air gets involved. Some Alabama communities could see over
two inches of rain between tomorrow afternoon and Monday of next week.

THE LONG RANGE: The North Atlantic Oscillation forecast to go
strongly negative in about 12 days, which will favor cold air for the deep
south for the first half of February.

THE DREADED WEDGE: I usually run for the hills anytime we mention "the
wedge." They are really tough to handle in weather forecasts. Maybe I should
explain what they are. It happens when a high pressure system moves across
or parks along the Mid-Atlantic coast or even in the Northeast. Cold air
circulating out of that high pushes down east of the Appalachians and then
moves westward across South Carolina and Georgia into Alabama. It is sort of
a back door cold front and they just love to sneak up on us. So, jumping to
the final result, we will watch closely for the possibility of some light
freezing rain late Friday night and early Saturday morning, mainly east and
NE of Birmingham. It is by no means sealed in stone at this time, but there
is that possibility.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: A cold front will move through later today and
tonight, but no earthshaking cold weather news with that. It will drop our
lows into the 30s and let our high temperatures back off to what they should
be in late January. Thursday should be dry. However, some rain will move in
Friday afternoon and become more widespread Friday night. It will continue
off and on Saturday. Some more rain will move in on Sunday and become more
widespread Sunday night. By early next week, as a low pressure system forms
and moves across to the NW of us, we could see some showers and
thunderstorms Monday.

ICE SKATING ON THE WARRIOR RIVER: Yep, it happened on at least two
occasions. One was in 1899 and the other one was 65 years ago today in 1940.
On the morning of January 26, the temperature dropped to 10 below zero at
Birmingham Airport. The airport was not official at that time, but you don't
have to be official to be accurate. A Weather Bureau station was being
established at the airport even though the official instruments were
downtown where the low was 1 above. Birmingham had already been covered by
one of its biggest snows ever with 10 inches on the ground. The storm dumped
13 inches on Cullman and Huntsville had below zero temperatures for three
days in a row. People were actually able to ice skate on the Warrior River
at Birmingport where ice was 6 inches thick near the banks of the river!

MEANDERING: Winter is far from over. Birmingham's average date for the last
freeze is on March 23, but it has occurred as late as April 23 in 1986...USA
warm spot yesterday 84 in Laredo...lows this morning included 17 below in
Presque Isle, Maine and 34 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly sure was pooped when she got
home from the beauty shop yesterday. She was absolutely overjoyed to get
home and she sure did smell good. She smelled like a young lady on her first
date. When I went to bed at 10:30 p.m., she would not even consider going
with me. Instead, she was passed out on her favorite rumpled blanket on the
couch. She slept a long time after she got home and also last night. I feel
sure a little puppy like Molly, who has to know absolutely everything that's
going on, would not take a nap with all the excitement at the beauty shop.
She has also slept a lot today perched on the back of the couch. Every time
I walk by I get a whiff of the perfume and I stop and cuddle and love her.
It's a relaxing moment for both of us. Life goes on whether Molly smells
good or smells like a dog.

...Cold Air Arrives Tomorrow...

Clouds should cover much of Alabama this morning thanks to a weak weather
system passing overhead. It might squeeze out a few sprinkles of rain, but
the low level air is very dry, and most places will stay dry. In fact, some
sun should poke through the clouds this afternoon, pushing temperatures back
into the mid 60s.

Another surge of colder air slips in here tonight, and daytime temperatures
tomorrow should be about 10 to 15 degrees cooler. By Friday and Saturday we
will watch colder air trying to ease into the state from the east, draining
down the Appalachian mountains. This "wedge" effect could keep eastern
counties much cooler than the western side of Alabama. And, we will bring in
a chance of mostly light rain at times Friday night into Saturday with
another system moving through the southern branch of the jet stream.

WE NEED RAIN: Birmingham now needs over three inches of rain (3.15" to be
exact) to get back to normal, and we have a pretty decent chance at some
significant rain beginning Sunday afternoon and into Monday of next week
with a stronger storm system moving into the southeast U.S. In fact, some of
the longer range computer data suggests parts of the deep south might even
have a severe weather threat by Monday if unstable air gets involved.

COLDER DAYS? Long range model data suggests a pattern might be developing
that would put Alabama and the deep south in a rather cold temperature
regime in the February 5-15 time frame. Any warming trends during this 10
day stretch should be brief.

ROAMING: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Laredo, TX with 84.
Yesterday's high in Caribou, ME was only 6 degrees.

ACCEPTABLE TEMPERATURES: Not real warm, not real cold—that’s the way to go.
That should be the story of Alabama weather all the way through the weekend.
There will be some relatively minor changes, including a few sprinkles
tomorrow morning. Cooler, dry weather on Thursday. Some more rain by Friday
night and with a chance of rain also on Saturday and into Sunday. Our
warmest day will be tomorrow with low and mid 60s, then it’s back to the 50s
and upper 40s for highs after that. Our best chance of more widespread rain
should be Monday. See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details.

BLIZZARD AFTER EFFECTS: That New England blizzard over the weekend rated in
the top five and it was the first blizzard in Massachusetts since the April
Fool storm in 1997. Lots of schools and businesses still closed down today
as snow removal continues. It looks like final figures will show 7-foot
drifts and average snow depth of 38 inches at Salem and Plymouth,
Massachusetts. An interesting thing happened along the Massachusetts coast.
On Nantucket, 84 mph wind gusts occurred with blinding snow and temperatures
well below freezing. There was so much ocean spray flying through the air
that it completely glazed buildings with a sheet of ice, giving an eerie
glassy look.

STRIKING OUT IN ALL DIRECTIONS: Still no bitter cold weather in Alaska. The
lowest this morning was minus 24 at Nuiqsut...here in the lower 48, the cold
spot shifted to the west where it was minus 9 at Snake River in Yellowstone
National Park...at this time in 1965, a huge snowstorm dumped 105 inches at
Alta, Utah—an all-time record for the state. They have 95 inches on the
ground today, but it did not all fall at the same time...although I’m not
traveling today, my mind often roams the back roads. I sure would like to be
on one of the hiking trails up at either Cheaha or DeSoto State Parks today
or sitting in that tiny, tiny café where we had lunch one day at Pine Knot
in the hills of Eastern Kentucky...in 1978, Bert Reeves, on duty in the
National Weather Service, Indianapolis, got so worried that he issued a
blizzard warning for the entire State of Indiana. It was a good forecast.
South Bend was buried under 4 feet of snow...later Bert joined the NWS staff
at Birmingham to become the river forecaster. I enjoyed working with him for
a number of years...a couple of interesting temperatures...it has been as
low as 70 below in Ojmjakon, Russia in the last 24 hours and it’s 111 above
zero at Gascoyne Junction, Australia this afternoon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Lot’s of Molly-free time today. I guess that’s
good occasionally, but I don’t like it. The little girl awoke this morning
just as happy as a lark and ready to start playing instantly. She was
running from room to room grabbing her toys and wagging her tail, but it was
time to leave for the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). She is getting a trim today
and it seems so strange to not have that little squirt running all through
the house. Even when she is not playing, she slowly walks through every room
in the house several times a day like she is a night watchman making the
rounds...studies have shown that owning a dog or cat will help lower your
blood pressure. My blood pressure has been completely normal all my life,
but it’s nice to know that little Miss Molly will be standing by to help me
keep it down to normal levels if I ever develop BP problems. Life goes on
even with Molly away.

A 52-DEGREE PLUNGE IN TEMPERATURE: That's what happened when this latest
blast of arctic air moved in. It was 70 last Friday in Birmingham and this
morning it was 18. Let's look at some morning lows:

10 in Valley Head
11 in Black Creek (coldest in exactly two years)
13 in Wedowee, Hytop and Talladega
14 at Shoal Creek (Calhoun County) and Russell Cave
15 in Pinson, Collinsville, Crossville, Scottsboro
16 in Anniston, Mentone, Gadsden, Leeds,
Meridianville, Union Springs
17 in Addison, Alexander City, Huntsville, Madison
18 in Moulton (Lawrence County) and Birmingham
19 in Tuscaloosa, Jasper, Cullman, Section
20 in Guntersville, Russellville, Montgomery, Calera
22 in Selma
25 at Mobile Airport

NOW FOR THE FUTURE: It involves a quick and substantial warm up. We think
lows tonight will still dip into the upper 20s in some of the colder
valleys, but SW winds Tuesday will send the thermometer to the upper 50s and
then into the lower 60s on Wednesday. Another supply of cooler air will
arrive on Thursday, pulling high temperatures back to the lower 50s, but no
real cold nighttime temperatures. We could see a little scattered light rain
early Wednesday. After that the next rain should come later Friday and
Friday night and extend into Saturday morning.

THE BIG NORTHEAST BLIZZARD: New England caught it worse than anybody. A
wind gust of 84 mph was recorded on Nantucket Island along with blinding
snow. A data buoy SE of Cape Cod reported 27-foot waves. There were numerous
reports of snow over 30 inches deep in Eastern Massachusetts, including 38
inches at Salem and Plymouth. The Boston Common had 26 inches. The drifts
were much deeper.

PANNING AROUND: Amazing how so much bitter cold has left Alaska. Even good
old Deadhorse, near the arctic coast, had only 15 below this morning...the
coldest in the lower 48 this morning was minus 25 in Glens Fall, New
York...in extreme NE Tennessee, it was minus 3 at Mountain City where the
wind chill over the weekend was as low as minus 27...in the Great Smoky
Mountains, it was minus 12 atop 6,400-foot Mt. LeConte with 4 inches of
snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Why can't little Miss Molly be like other
dogs? All the time when I see people walking their dogs around our half-mile
walking track, the dog is either strolling along by their side or trailing
behind. Not little Miss Molly. As soon as I open the back door-shazam! She
is full speed ahead staying 20 feet in front of me at the end of the leash
and pulling mightily. Did you ever see Roy Rogers trying to slow down a
runaway stage? That's the way I look when I go up the walking track leaning
back at an angle. That was the story this morning. It was nice to be out in
the crisp air, but I have to watch Molly, because any moment she can slam on
brakes, go in circles and even reverse at full speed if she smells a scent.
I often onder how she moves so fast with her nose almost touching the ground
and she never misjudges with her nose getting caught in the grass and
turning a flip. I sure would laugh if she did. Nice note today from a lady
in Tuscaloosa who also has a Shih-tzu named Gizmo. I absolutely love that
name. Life goes on.

...Another Chilly Start...

GOOD MORNING! For the second straight Monday, we are kicking off the week
with a cold Monday morning. As is the case when we have a strong morning
inversion in a radiational cooling situation, temperatures on the ridges are
likely several degrees warmer than those in the valley locations.
Temperatures will warm up a lot today, running some 12-15 degrees warmer
than yesterday, when the cold air advection machine was in high gear.
Likewise, readings tonight will be some 10-15 degrees warmer than last
night. And then things will moderate even further on Tuesday when the
mercury will reach the upper 50s and on Wednesday when highs will top out
near 60 degrees.

Skies should be mostly sunny today with just a few high clouds streaming
across from time to time, and become partly cloudy on Tuesday. A
reinforcing cold front will push trough the area on Wednesday, but it will
be starved for moisture, so we will just call for mostly cloudy skies and a
tiny chance of a few sprinkles at this time. Temperatures will fall back to
near normal levels on Thursday and Friday.

SNEAK PEAK AT THE WEEKEND: By late on Saturday, a storm system will be
getting organized near the Red River of northern Texas. This system will
move eastward, bringing rain to Alabama, most likely during the day on
Sunday and into the overnight hours.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: One twister struck the eastern part of Tuscaloosa,
killing one person and injuring eight. The tornado struck a strip shopping
center, crushing the roof of a crowded Food World grocery store and tossing
cars in the parking lot like toys. A car was blown on top of and through
the roof of the supermarket. Quick action by store managers who saw the
approaching twister and ushered people who were outside in their cars into
the building and warned customers to take cover saved many lives. The one
fatality occurred when a tree was blown onto a car.
