...Cooler Air Returns...
Daytime temperatures across Alabama today will be 10 to 15 degrees
cooler than those of yesterday as Polar air returns to the state. The trend
toward colder temperatures will continue through Saturday, and sets up an
interesting situation early in the weekend as a storm system approaches.
THE WEDGE: Cold air draining down the east slopes of the Appalachian
mountains will slip into east Alabama tomorrow and Saturday, with
temperatures expected to drop to near 30 degrees early Saturday. At the same
time, rain should widespread over much of the state, and some icing problems
are possible over parts of east and northeast Alabama in the wedge. Based on
the latest data, the greatest chance of freezing rain will come from about
midnight tomorrow night through 8:00 a.m. Saturday in areas east of a line
from Huntsville to Pell City to Alexander City.
The ground is relatively warm, so the main problem will be from ice
on bridges and other exposed surfaces. Temperatures should warm above
freezing by mid-morning, so any ice problems should be short-lived.
WET WEEKEND: While the rain should taper off Saturday evening, a
stronger system will bring more showers to the state by Sunday afternoon,
which will last at times into Monday of next week. Some strong thunderstorms
could be involved Sunday night or Monday, and severe weather cannot be ruled
out if unstable air gets involved. Some Alabama communities could see over
two inches of rain between tomorrow afternoon and Monday of next week.
THE LONG RANGE: The North Atlantic Oscillation forecast to go
strongly negative in about 12 days, which will favor cold air for the deep
south for the first half of February.
