...Stormy Weather Ahead...

We are entering a period of unsettled spring weather here in Central
Alabama. It will be characterized by a warm, moist and unstable
airmass, the proximity of a frontal system and an active upper wind
pattern. Bouts of showers and storms will occur over the next several
days, and severe weather looks like a definite possibility, especially
today through Sunday night, including the threat for tornadoes. Keep
close to a reliable source of weather information through the weekend.

FOLLOW THE BOUNDARY: A disturbance sliding eastward through southern
Tennessee on Friday evening pushed thunderstorms well down into
Central Alabama during the late night. Outflow from the storms laid
down a boundary that settled across Central Alabama. This little mini-
frontal system will provide the focus for additional showers and
storms today that will form in an active westerly flow today and
tonight. Disturbances keep ejecting out of an upper trough over the
western U.S. and rippling along in the flow. These will tap the warm
and moist
airmass to produce rounds of showers and storms. Some of the storms
could become severe.

SEVERE SUNDAY? There may be a bit of a break in the action on Sunday
morning as a surface low forms over eastern Texas and moves
northeastward. We will find ourselves in a developing warm sector.
The airmass over Alabama will be warm, moist and unstable. Showers and
storms will develop. With a good deal of speed shear, the storms will
be organized and will become severe. In addition, the low will
provide sufficient low level shear to produce an enhanced threat of
tornadoes. Sunday will be a day spent watching the weather.

SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY: A line of thunderstorms will move across the
state Sunday night ahead of a cold front. They could be severe as
well. They will slowly push into Central and East Alabama Monday
morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: It looks like we could get a break Tuesday before
an upper trough sets up across the Eastern U.S., giving us additional
rounds of showers and storm in the Wednesday through Friday time frame.

CRAWFISH BOIL: A great lineup for the annual Schaeffer Eye Center
Crawfish Boil downtown today. Gates open at 1:30 this afternoon at
the BJCC complex. Some of the acts on tap for this afternoon and
tonight include Everclear, Katy Perry, the All-American Rejects and
Snoop Dogg. 21,000 pounds of spicy, boiled crawfish will accompany the
musical acts. A truly great and unique Magic City event.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: The Weather Channel was launched with 4.2
million cable subscribers. Created by ABC network television
weathercaster John Coleman, the all-weather network would boast 50
million subscribers by its tenth anniversary. The key component of
the network's programming was its specific local forecast and warning
information, beamed to local cable systems by satellite and displayed
on subscribers' sets.

ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

Visit http://www.al1call.com for more information.
===================================================================
SOME HEAVY RAINS FRIDAY: It was a busy weather day across North
Alabama on Friday Morning storms dumped over two inches of rain across
a large part of the Tennessee Valley down into Blount, Cullman and
Etowah Counties. There was a report of up to three inches near
Blountsville. Afternoon storms dropped into the Tennessee Valley along
an outflow boundary, resulting in several severe thunderstorm warnings
and even a couple of tornado warnings. There was even some egg sized
hail in the Glencoe area of Etowah County. More followed during the
evening. But most of the activity stayed north of Central Alabama.

FORECAST: CRAWFISH! A great lineup for the annual Schaeffer Eye
Center Crawfish Boil this weekend. Gates open at 1:30 this afternoon
at the BJCC complex. The weather should cooperate, but there could be
showers and storms rumbling across parts of the area with any passing
disturabnces. It will be warm and a little humid, with highs today
peaking in the 80s, falling back through the 70s during the evening
lineup, which includes Everclear, Katy Perry, the All-American Rejects
and Snoop Dogg. 21,000 pounds of spicy, boiled crawfish will accompany
the musical acts.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Today will be mild and mostly cloudy with a
slight chance of a shower or storm. Temperatures will retreat into the
60s. Look for another warm and humid day on Sunday, with fewer storms
and highs again in the 80s.

NEW WORK WEEK: A stronger disturbance will give a little southward
momentum to our frontal system by Monday and it should sink far enough
south to trigger more widespread showers and storms then. Chances are
this front will stall across the area on Tuesday, keeping us in rain
chances, then, but hopefully thinning a bit by Wednesday.

SKY ALERT: On Astronomy Day on Saturday the Birmingham Astronomical
Society will be at the McWane Science Center from 10am-2pm with their
amazing telescopes and members. This includes George Atchley, Director
of the Christenberry Planetarium at Samford University, who will be
doing some presentations in the Stardome; James Moore, a NASA Jet
Propulsion Laboratory and Solar System Ambassador, who will be doing
some new Science on a Sphere programs about Mars; and McWane docent
Charlie Thompson who is bringing a HUGE truss Dobsonian telescope. The
BAS is a great group of people who are EXTREMELY smart. You can learn
a lot from them, and much fun will be had.

ON THIS DATE IN 1929: Six tornadoes killed twenty two people in
Virginia's worst weather disaster. A school was destroyed at Rye Cove.
Administrators at the school saw the approaching funnel but did not
want to start a panic, hoping that it would miss the school. Most of
the 155 students were outside at recess when the twister slammed into
the building, which sat on a knoll in the center of a valley. Twelve
students and a teacher were killed. Forty two were hospitalized.

...Consistent Temperatures...

THE ALABAMA STORY: A good part of North and NE Alabama got a real
soaking this morning as a big cluster of thunderstorms developed
southward from Middle Tennessee and affected a number of North Alabama
counties. Those storms were overloaded with lightning, but we do not
know of any reports of hail since the freezing level was so high. The
NWS issued some Flood Advisories for Blount County. Based on radar
estimates as much as 4 inches of rain may have fallen over the north
part of that county. Eventually, the storms faded away and moved into
NW Georgia by late morning.

The rest of the day was fairly quiet weatherwise. For much of this
afternoon, there were few if any showers, however another batch of
strong storms were poised north of the state by midafternoon in Middle
Tennessee and moving toward the SE. These were taking pretty much the
same track as those this morning, so the better chance of showers and
storms tonight will be over the northern counties. Over Central and
South Alabama, they should be scarce tonight.

THIS WEEKEND: We believe we will not have as many showers and storms
over the weekend, especially on Sunday when the risk should be very
small. There should be another increase in showers and storms about
Tuesday.
The atmosphere has become more humid across Alabama the last few days
as we gradually approach a warmer time of the year.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH: Late this afternoon the Storm Prediction
Center posted a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7:00 p.m. for extreme
North Alabama, mostly for the Tennessee Valley counties. This was due
to that line of thunderstorms approaching the state from the north.
The Watch also includes extreme NE Mississippi and South/Central
Tennessee.

AT THE BEACH: Spring-like temperatures will continue along the
Alabama/NW Florida coast through the weekend and well into next week.
Most high temperatures will be around 83 and lows in the upper 60s.
There should be very few showers or storms Saturday and Sunday, but
increasing on Monday and Tuesday.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center posted a Moderate Risk
this afternoon and tonight for a small area of North/Central Texas
including the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and a Slight Risk northeastward
into Tennessee and extreme North Alabama. For tomorrow, there is a
Slight Risk all the way from Laredo, Texas northeastward to Arkansas
and eastward across Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia.

MISCELLANEOUS: Major flooding in NE Oklahoma this morning from a big
cluster of thunderstorms. In one town near Tulsa, there were at least
25 water rescues. A number of homes were flooded, as well as roads.
Temperature extremes around the USA included 100 yesterday in Pecos,
Texas and 7 above zero this morning in Yellowstone National Park.
Springfield, Missouri got 3.67 inches of rain. In Alaska, the coldest
was 25 at good old Deadhorse. Amazingly, the small town of St. Mary,
in Northern Montana just east of the mountains, received 60 inches of
snow from this latest storm.

...Scattered Showers Remain Possible...

MOIST AIR: A moist airmass is in place across Alabama this morning,
and with a weak disturbance aloft moving overhead, we will forecast a
pretty decent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across our
state today. Still, it won't rain everywhere, and the rain won't be
especially heavy for most places. The showers will taper off this
afternoon as the disturbance moves on to the east.

THE WEEKEND: Looks like a warm weekend with afternoon highs in the 81
to 86 degree range; the sky will be partly sunny both tomorrow and
Sunday, and any showers that form during the afternoon hours should be
widely separated. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and
Sunday is about one in five.

NEXT WEEK: We expect a general increase in the number of showers and
storms Monday into Monday night with a surface boundary dropping
down into the state. Drier air filters in behind that front on Tuesday
as the showers become isolated again. Still no sign of any major
intrusion of cool air for the next 7 days as the Polar jet stream
remains well to the north.

MAY DAY: We begin the month of May today; this month is still
considered part of the spring tornado season in Alabama, although the
severe weather events are usually not as frequent as what we
experience in April and May. There have been a number of notable May
tornado outbreaks, however, including the May 27, 1973 event
responsible for an EF4 tornado that killed 5 people in Brent, and
caused serious damage in Greensboro. That same tornado destroyed the
old WSR-57 National Weather Service radar, which at the time was along
Alabama Highway 25 about 8 miles west of Brent.

The average high rises from 78 today, to 84 at the end of the month.
The hottest temperature on record in May came on May 28, 1962 and May
29, 1898 when the high in Birmingham was 99 degrees. The coldest
temperature on record for the month is 36, recorded on May 4, 1971. The
average rain for the month is 4.83".

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: A full blizzard with vivid lightning display
struck the Dakotas. 30 inches of snow in the Black Hills. 16 inches
recorded at Lemmon, SD. 70-mph winds whipped the snow into deep drifts.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that

Alabama home and business needs one!

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Not a huge change in our weather from what we
have had for several days, but the chance of getting a shower or
thunderstorm overall is going up slightly. Even so, the timing of
which days have the best chance is not sealed in stone. We think the
chance of you getting wet is rather small through the weekend. We
believe there will be an increase in showers and thunderstorms about
Monday.

This does not rule out your backyard getting wet before that time,
because there will be some around each day. Yesterday, for example, a
thunderstorm dumped over an inch of rain at Bear Creek in NW Alabama
and there was a nice shower in Tuscaloosa County.

Alabama temperatures will be monotonous for the rest of the week and
well into next week. There will probably not be much of a variation
from the low to mid 80s in daytime until a temporary slight cool down
on Monday and Tuesday due to an increase in cloud cover and the chance
of showers. Lows at night will be consistently in the mid 60s. We do
not see a cool front getting into the state from the NW all the way
through the end of next week. As we weather people say, we are
entering the time of year when the weather can become monotonous.

HURRICANE SEASON: Only 31 days to the official beginning of the 2009
hurricane season. We do not know for sure what kind of season we will
have. There was a study in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago that
tended to play down the value of pre-season predictions. We do know
that 16 of the main storms in 2009 have five letters or less making
them easy to pronounce. The first two named storms will be Anna and
Bill. It seems that only Joaquin is semi-difficult to pronounce.

SEVERE WEATHER: It sure has been active in the middle part of the
country lately. A slight risk is in effect the rest of today and
tonight all the way from North Texas to Ohio and extending as far east
as the extreme NW portion of Mississippi and extreme West Tennessee.
Tomorrow the slight risk area includes Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita,
Little Rock, St. Louis, Memphis and extreme North Mississippi.

DATELINE KALISPELL: Montana, that is. A very nice e-mail today from
Jim Hutchinson, who is a subscriber to our daily e-forecast. He
reports that in the recent winter blast Browning, Montana had to close
all roads and the town of Babb near Browning received 4 feet of snow
in 36 hours with wind gusts over 50. Great Falls got over 25 inches of
snow in about two days, which broke several records. By the way,
Browning, Montana is another famous weather spot. It is the only
weather station in the USA that had a 100-degree temperature plunge in
only 24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is my fault that Little Miss Molly is
becoming more and more spoiled. She knows when I am extremely busy and
she takes advantage of me. She used to only get a treat when we were
gone and came back home or when we took her on a walk. Now almost
every time I zip into the kitchen to get coffee, she petitions me for
another treat. I will have to break her of that habit. I would not
trade Little Miss Molly even for my beloved 1996 Olds. Just being
around that little girl is as relaxing as eating a Prozac sandwich or
a Valium casserole. Life goes on. I do not think she will ever slow
down....

...Warm, Humid Weather Continues...

SUMMER-LIKE WEATHER: The weather across Alabama yesterday was more
like mid to late June; highs in the low to mid 80s with a few
scattered showers and thunderstorms. While most neighborhoods missed
the rain drops completely, a few spots picked up a heavy downpour.

Our Skywatcher at Bear Creek, in Northwest Alabama not too far from
Haleyville, reported 1.12" with a passing thunderstorm along with some
scattered power outages. Only a trace was reported at the Birmingham
Airport, but radar data suggested about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain fell
to the northeast between Tarrant and Pinson.

TODAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The weather won't change very much; each
day will be warm and humid through Sunday with afternoon highs in the
80 to 84 degree range. The sky will be partly sunny, and we will
maintain some risk of afternoon showers and storms. Like yesterday,
the storms will be widely spaced and widespread rain isn't likely. The
most numerous showers and storms will come during the peak of the
daytime heating process, generally between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m.

This general pattern will continue into next week, although the upper
ridge should be a little weaker, meaning that the coverage of showers
and storms should increase a bit. Temperatures next week will remain
above average.

AT THE BEACH: The weather looks generally dry along the Gulf Coast
from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend. Afternoon
highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 70s, with mid
80s likely inland. The sea water temperature last night at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab was 75 degrees; it should be close to 80 by June 1 when
the hurricane season begins.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Severe storms yesterday moving through
Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas were responsible for 7 reports of
tornadoes, along with 21 reports of damaging wind and 68 reports of
large hail. Storms moved through the Oklahoma City area, dropping
2.09" of rain at Will Rogers Airport. Wichita Falls had 3.96". Hottest
place in the nation yesterday was Pecos, Texas with 98 degrees, while
the cold spot was Truckee, California with 16 degrees. Winter storm
warnings remain in effect for a good part of Montana today, with an
additional six inches of snow is possible.

ON THIS DATE IN 1953: Major tornado struck Warner Robins AFB GA,
killing 18 Air Force personnel and family members. The tornado was the
worst in the Southeastern United States in the very devastating
tornado year 1953.

...Warm Weather Staying With Us...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story where we are looking at an increase
in showers and maybe even some thunderstorms. We caution quickly that
this does not mean a widespread soaking. Conditions are getting fairly
dry around the state and any showers should be welcomed.
The overall weather pattern has changed just enough that we cannot
rule out a shower or thunderstorm at any time for the next 5 to 7
days. They should be few in number tomorrow. It looks like for the
next several days, the better chance of getting a shower or
thunderstorm will be roughly over the north third of the state and
mostly north of Birmingham. However, by Saturday and Sunday we may see
an increase down into Central Alabama also.

Some scattered showers and thunderstorms moved into the NW part of the
state early this afternoon. A few spots briefly got some heavy rain.
Those will mostly diminish after dark.

THE OLE THERMOMETER: It has not had much work to do lately, because
temperatures have been consistent for days on end, mostly in the lower
80s and sometimes as high as mid 80s. We do not see much change in
that all the way into the middle of next week. Lows at night will also
be consistent—mostly in the low to mid 60s. A warm front was pushing
northward this afternoon crossing the Ohio River. This leaves Alabama
and most of the Southeast in a warm and fairly humid air mass. By
Saturday, a cold front (we really should call it a cool front) will be
approaching NW Alabama, but it will stall north of Birmingham until
about Tuesday. This is part of what will increase our chance of
showers by the weekend.

SEVERE WEATHER: We have gone almost a full week without any threat in
Alabama and that is still pretty much the case. This afternoon a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch was out for part of Oklahoma and Arkansas
and a Tornado Watch for NW Texas. Tomorrow there is a Slight Risk from
the Central Plains northeast to Indiana and Ohio and for Friday the
Slight Risk extends from Oklahoma and Arkansas northeast to Ohio.

PICK OF THE DAY WEATHER SPOT: Today let us look at Chinook, Montana.
They were getting gusts to 45 mph with no thunderstorms. That small
town is located in North/Central Montana on US Route 2. No doubt the
town was named after the famous Chinook winds that come roaring off
the east slopes of the Rockies.

ROAMING: Still some leftover flood problems in Houston today. The hot
spot in the nation Tuesday was Laredo with 96. Lows this morning
included 19 at Truckee, California and 23 at Barrow and Barter,
Alaska. Whittier has 61 inches of snow on the ground. Yellowstone
National Park is still getting snow and may get up to 11 inches of new
snow the next couple of days. This latest storm system dumped 24
inches of new snow SW of Lander, Wyoming. In Barrow, Alaska, the sun
will not set tonight until after midnight at 12:16 a.m. their time.
Eventually they will have 24
hours of daylight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure do enjoy receiving e-mail about
Little Miss Molly from all over the place. We have readers as far
away as Utah and California and even one in Nevada. We have received e-
mails as far away as Northern Ireland and they all really enjoy the
stories. That makes me feel good, because I enjoy writing about her.
Some folks may think I make up some of it, but I do not and I do not
even embellish the stories. By the way, did you see the story of the
real small dog in the Midwest that was picked up by 70-mile an hour
winds. The poor little dog was carried for a mile. A huge reunion when
the family found him out in the woods. Life goes on regardless of the
weather.

...More Like June...

SUMMER-LIKE WEATHER CONTINUES: The calendar says April, but the
weather will feel more like June for the next few days as temperatures
remain about 5 to 8 degrees above average values; highs generally in
the low 80s with early morning lows in the low 60s. The persistent
upper air ridge that has been over Alabama for the last week or so
will weaken slightly in coming days, opening the door for a few
afternoon showers.

But, there is very little dynamic forcing, and those showers should be
widely spaced, and mostly during the afternoon and evening hours when
the daytime heating process is at a peak.

OUR WEEKEND: A weak front will try to drift down into North Alabama at
some point this weekend, and could provide a slightly better coverage
of scattered showers, but the rain shouldn't be especially widespread
or heavy, and there will be some good intervals of sunshine on
Saturday and Sunday. The high both days will be close to 80.

LONG RANGE THOUGHTS: Looks like we stay in a warm and humid airmass
next week, but the best dynamics will remain west and north of the
state, so for now it looks like a chance of scattered, mainly
afternoon showers on a daily basis with a high close to 80 each day.
Still no sign of any heavy rain or severe weather threat for the next
15 days or so. Still plenty of time for the upper air pattern to
change before the long, hot summer sets in.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days and clear nights through the weekend
for areas from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores; any showers will
be very isolated. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the mid
to upper 70s, with mid 80s inland. The sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab yesterday afternoon was 74 degrees (F).

THIS MONTH IN 1874: Snowiest April on record in New York/New England
history. Cape Cod had snow on every Saturday in the month. Parts of
Vermont and New Hampshire picked up 60 inches during the month and 24
inches fell on the 29th in NW NJ. Latest freezing temperature ever
recorded in Washington DC. 1/2 inch of snow fell in New York for the
latest measurable snow in the city's history.

...Little Change For Alabama...

TEMPERATURES STILL ABOVE NORMAL: A stalled front this afternoon
extended from NE Texas to Illinois and Indiana. A high-pressure system
was centered in the Atlantic east of the coast of the Carolinas. This
is a typical set up for our part of the country this time of year and
there is very little encouragement for that stalled front to crank up
and move again. In fact, by Wednesday and Thursday the front will
retreat northward leaving Alabama in a warm and fairly humid air mass.
Even so, there is not much of a trigger to set off showers and
thunderstorms. It looks as if the better chance of us getting wet will
be about Saturday and Sunday when the front will push southward again
and possibly stall across North Alabama late in the weekend.

Meanwhile, until that happens only a small chance of a shower
tomorrow, few if any on Thursday and just a few on Friday. Most
communities will stay dry during those three days. Afternoon
temperatures will persist at being about 5 degrees above average for
late April with most highs in the lower 80s.

WE COULD USE THE RAIN: This time of year it does not take very long
for topsoil moisture to disappear even after a good rain. Fairly low
dew points with brisk southerly winds and an overdose of sunshine can
dry things in a hurry. The Birmingham surplus for April so far has now
dwindled to less than 1/3 of an inch. Some other parts of the state
are showing a deficiency.

WAY TOO MUCH RAIN IN HOUSTON: The biggest city in Texas has
experienced three flash flood events in the last 12 days. Amazingly,
Houston/Hobby Airport has received almost 16 inches of rain so far
this month making it the wettest April on record with the previous
wettest being 10.49 inches in 1973. Significant flash flooding erupted
overnight and the entire city was drenched. Jersey Village in the
greater Houston area was inundated with 10.13 inches of rain in the
last 24 hours. Bunker Hill Village had 9.74 inches and Katy, west of
Houston, 7 inches.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: The hottest in the country yesterday was again
in the Mid-Atlantic States with a hot 97 at Leesburg, Virginia and
Toms River, New Jersey. The coldest in Alaska this morning was 21 at
Wainwright. I believe that is the highest coldest since last fall.
Still 65 inches of snow on the ground at Whittier. In the lower 48
states, one of the coldest spots was the west entrance to Yellowstone
National Park with 21. There is 25 inches of snow on the ground at
Pahaska, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was nice to have Glenn Slye and his
daughter, Anne Anderson drop by yesterday. We hated to lose France
Slye well over a year ago. They were our weekly Friday night Rook
partners. This was the first time for Molly to see Glenn since her
death and she remembered him immediately. They visited us for about
two hours and Molly never left Glenn. She stuck to him like glue. That
is one friendly little girl. We have a neighbor across the street that
has a new little dog, smaller than Molly, who stays in their backyard.
When I walk Molly by there they kiss each other through an opening in
the fence. Life goes on.

...Warm Weather Continues...

STILL WARM: The average high for Birmingham on April 28 is 77; our
forecast high for today is 6 degrees above that at 83. Like recent
days, we expect a good supply of sunshine with a few fair weather
cumulus clouds this afternoon. We do note that low level moisture will
be a little higher across the state, and you might even see a few
showers on radar this afternoon. But, for now, it looks like they will
be few and far between, and we won't mention them in our formal
forecast.

REST OF THE WEEK: Our forecast tomorrow through Friday will remind you
of the one that we use so often in the summer; warm humid days with
some risk of a brief afternoon shower in scattered spots. There is
little dynamic forcing, so the afternoon showers won't be widespread;
in fact the chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in
eight, and the best chance of those showers will come from around 2:00
until 8:00 p.m. Otherwise, warm weather is the story with afternoon
highs mostly in the 80 to 83 degree range.

WEEKEND PEEK: The persistent upper ridge should begin to break down
even more over the weekend, and we will have some risk of scattered
showers both Saturday and Sunday. But, no wash-out, and there should
be some very nice intervals of sunshine both days. The high will be
close to 80, although some places north of Birmingham won't get out of
the 70s.
At this point, the weather for much of next week is looking unsettled,
with temperatures trending downward and rain chances going up as a
disturbed southwest flow aloft sets up across the Deep South. Keep in
mind that we still consider May part of our spring tornado season, and
some pretty decent rain/storms events are likely before we get into
the long hot summer. We could actually use some rain around here;
Birmingham has 20.29" of rain for the year, which is right at average
through April 27. We will slip into a slight rain deficiency for the
year beginning tomorrow.

JUST AROUND THE CORNER: We are just about one month away from the
arrival of the 2009 hurricane season, which officially begins on June
1. May tropical cyclones are possible, but not likely. The hurricane
forecasting team at Colorado State University is forecasting 12 named
storms this year, including 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1942: The town of Pryor, Oklahoma was destroyed by an
especially devastating tornado. 52 people died in the disaster. 500
buildings were destroyed or damaged.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!

...Warm Spring Weather...

THE ALABAMA STORY: We are getting into the time of year that our
daily forecast can sound much the same from day to day. This will be
especially true when we get into June and July. Over the next five
days, there is just enough chance of a shower or thunderstorm that we
should mention it, but it is not expected to be a significant wetting
down of the Alabama countryside.

Latest model runs show a slight weakening of the upper ridge that has
kept us unseasonably warm and dry for most of last week and this
weekend. Even so, our temperatures all this week will be 3 to 5
degrees warmer than average for the latter part of April. We are
calling for highs between 80 and 83 all the way through next weekend.
The chance of a shower or thunderstorm on any given day is very small,
but possibly a better chance about Saturday.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS: We are still in fairly good shape across Alabama,
however, the excess for this year at Birmingham has dwindled to 0.46
after being over 1 inch ahead of the game not too long ago. Serious
drought conditions plague California. For example, Los Angeles, with
only 4.27 inches, is less than one-half of average. Similar shortages
were San Diego and Fresno. This year is going to be a crucial one for
water supplies in that very popular state.

MISCELLANEOUS: A big warm up in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states
the last few days. So much so that New York City had the highest
temperature ever for April 26 yesterday. It was 92 in Central Park—a
whopping 28 degrees above average. It also broke the previous record
by 8 degrees established in 1942. Even in Upstate New York it was 82
in Saranac Lake. Remember how many times this past winter that
location was the coldest in the lower 48. The national high Sunday was
100 at Petersburg, West Virginia. It was 87 in Boston and 97 in
Frederick, Maryland. Some cold temperatures this morning included 11
in Yellowstone National Park, 15 in Stanley, Idaho and 22 at Barter
Island, Alaska. The snow pack at Whittier, Alaska is down to 70 inches.

SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: There was a High Risk posted for parts of
Oklahoma and Kansas Sunday. It did not quite pan out and today the
situation is less serious. Even so, there is a Slight Risk this
afternoon and tonight in a broad area from Texas to Indiana and Lower
Michigan. For Tuesday, just a Slight Risk confined to West Texas and
on Wednesday a Slight Risk from Central Texas northward to parts of
Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I believe it was Ralph Waldo Emerson who
used to say that the sky was the daily bread of the eyes and the
ultimate art gallery above. He meant, of course, the sky is always
changing with different type clouds every day and the stars at night.
I never fail to look at the sky when I am out walking Little Miss
Molly. However, this morning I had to spend most of my time looking
down at the concrete walkway, because I counted 13 earthworms en route
to who knows where. They were speeding along at about 10 feet an hour.
One of the worms was very young—only 2 inches long. Molly accidentally
stepped on him and immediately jumped back. I believe that little worm
cut loose with some very foul language. Life goes on and there are
zillions of little creatures in the world that make life more
interesting.

...Warm Week...

A challenging forecast over the next few days as we find ourselves in
a tug of war between a trough to the west and strong ridge over the
eastern United States. The placement of the frontal system later in
the week will determine the southward extent of rain chances, and
there is a lot of uncertainty about that for now. Then we will be
looking at the possibility of a couple of storm systems starting late
next weekend and into the following week for us here in Alabama. And
finally, could we see an Atlantic tropical storm in early May?

THE FORECAST: Look for another beautiful day today across Central
Alabama as partly cloudy and warm conditions continue. Highs today
will top out in the lower and middle 80s. By Tuesday, a surface front
will try to push into North Alabama, but it increasingly looks like
that the system will stay to our north, keeping rain chances there as
well. We can't rule a few isolated storms each afternoon Tuesday
through Thursday though with a warm and humid airmass in place and a
little bit of spark from the front. The models still try to bring the
system through on Friday and Saturday, but as we have seen with these
strong subtropical highs, they may be a little optimistic. Still, we
will increase rain chances a bit for Friday and Saturday and back off
just a tad on the temperatures.

ROUGH NIGHT: It was a rough afternoon and overnight from Texas to
Iowa as a large upper system produced numerous reports of severe
weather, including a couple of tornadoes. Fortunately, as of late
evening, no significant damage had been reported.

MAY TROPICAL STORM? The GFS has been consistently putting forward
the idea of a tropical storm forming in the western Caribbean in about
ten days. You have to take that with a grain of salt, since the model
tends to do this just about every year. But it has been consistent
over several runs, and there are some synoptic factors that give it
credence. Shear is expected to decrease over the western Caribbean in
the next two weeks and we are going into an active Madden-Julian
Oscillation, which would favor Atlantic tropical activity for a couple
of weeks. It will be interesting to watch. May tropical storms are
rather rare, occurring in about one out of every ten Atlantic
hurricane seasons. The first storm this year will be Ana, followed by
Bill, Claudette, Danny and Erika

ON THIS DATE IN 1922: For two weeks, the city of New Orleans,
Louisiana had been under siege from a major flood on the Mississippi
River. On this date, a crevasse, or levee failure occurred 12 miles
downriver from New Orleans at Poydras in St. Bernard Parish in
Louisiana The Poydras crevasse would become an opening 1,500 feet
wide in the levee. Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes would be
completely flooded. As the Army Corps of Engineers "controlled" the
Mighty Mississippi with levees, the River had nowhere to go but
higher. So levees farther south had to be built higher and higher.
At Morganza, Louisiana floods in the nineteenth century had been
contained with a 7.5 foot levee. The levee had to be 38 feet in
1922! The 1922 flood was a preview of a worse flood that would
occur in 1927.

...Warm Weather To Continue...

A beautiful Sunday is in progress across Alabama. Lots of warm
sunshine is pushing temperatures into the middle 80s across the area.
It looks like our fine spring weather will continue through Tuesday,
and perhaps longer, depending on the eventual stalling point of a cold
front that will edge our way at midweek. It is a low confidence
forecast after the next couple of days, but here goes…

WARM WEEK AHEAD: The short term forecast is pretty easy. Tomorrow
will look a lot like today. Temperatures will start off in the lower
60s in the morning, and rise into the lower 80s by afternoon. Skies
will be partly cloudy. Monday night will feature partly cloudy skies
with lows in the lower 60s. Our persistent ridge in the east, trough
in the west upper pattern will be precariously balanced through Monday
night. Little disturbances rippling along the underside of the trough
will help it to move ever so slightly to the south by Tuesday. This
will allow the battle zone between the two air masses to edge our
way. I think that showers and a few thunderstorms will work their way
into the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama by Tuesday night, and could
remain there through much of Wednesday before the front decides to
retreat northward again. This is where the crystal ball is a little
fuzzy. Recent model runs have given the front greater impetus by late
Thursday, spreading showers and storms across the entire area for
Friday. I think that is a low probability happening, so for now, we
will keep Central Alabama mainly dry until the bigger storm system
arrives Sunday night.

MORE SEVERE WEATHER ON THE PLAINS TODAY: At least eight reports of
tornadoes yesterday in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. One evening
tornado skipped across parts of Enid, Oklahoma, damaging the Expo
Center there. Reports after midnight indicated a large, violent
tornado near Kremlin, Oklahoma. The damage was still being assessed
this morning. Severe is expected again today from southern Kansas
through western Oklahoma into northern Texas. A moderate risk
outlook is in place.

CLOSE CALL: A crew from KMBC-TV9 in Kansas City had a close call
with a tornado along I-70 west of the Metro Saturday afternoon the
storm turned erratically south toward them, causing them to flee into
a ditch with other motorists as debris flew all around them. The
tornado destroyed a farm near Reno, Kansas.

SKY SHOW TONIGHT: Look to the west just after sunset this evening and
you will see a spectacular conjunction of a slender crescent moon, the
planet Mercury and the star cluster the Pleaides.

OVERPASSES AND TORNDOES: One of the notable tornadoes of the April26,
1991 Andover Outbreak produced a safety controversy that exists to
this day. A camera crew from KSNW in Wichita was traveling along the
Kansas Turnpike near Eldorado, Kansas when a tornado began to overtake
them. The crew stopped and sought shelter under a highway overpass
with several other people who had parked underneath the overpass. The
television crew yelled for the people to climb under the bridge's
girders. As the crew continued to film, the tornado appeared to score
a direct hit on the bridge. The tornado appeared to strike the
overpass directly, but in reality it didn't. The video created a
false impression that overpasses provide safe haven during tornadoes.
They don't.

...Welcome Race Fans!...

I am not sure who is in charge of weather procurement for the
Talladega Superspeedway, but they have really outdone themselves this
weekend. Mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures will make for a
great day for race watching today for the Aarons 499. Temperatures at
the green flag will be in the middle 80s. If you are heading to the
race, be prepared for exposure to the sun and heat. Wear sunscreen
and cool clothing. Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic
beverages.

YOUR FORECAST: The upper pattern over the U.S. continues to be
dominated by a ridge in the east and a trough in the west. This
pattern is not expected to substantially change during the week ahead,
but disturbances rippling along the boundary between the two systems
will nibble at the blocking ridge. This will allow a frontal boundary
to settle southward toward the Tennessee Valley by late Tuesday. The
result will be scattered showers and storms along the front. For now,
it appears that the best rain chances will remain to the north of
Central Alabama, over the Tennessee Valley. That will have to be
monitored, but that appears to be the best forecast solution for now.
Until then, expect mostly sunny skies for Monday and Tuesday.
Showers and a few storms will again be mainly to the north of Central
Alabama on Wednesday and Thursday before the frontal boundary lifts
back to the north ahead of our next storm system. This should set the
stage for a mainly dry weekend. Temperatures will continue to be warm
through the week ahead.

SKY SHOW TONIGHT: Look to the west just after sunset this evening and
you will see a spectacular conjunction of a slender crescent moon, the
planet Mercury and the star cluster the Pleaides.

HURRICANE SEASON NOT FAR AWAY: Just a reminder that the Atlantic
Hurricane Season is just around the corner: the GFS model is
notorious for erroneously predicting early season tropical development
in the long range. It was doing just that yesterday, developing a
tropical storm in the western Caribbean out around May 11th. Just
throwing it out there…

DON'T BE THAT GUY: A South Carolina man burning yard debris has been
cited for not following regulations regarding outdoor burning. But
that is not very comforting to the 70 homeowners that saw their
dwellings destroyed and nearly 100 others who had theirs damaged by a
wildfire that charred over 31 square miles near Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina this week. Firefighters were called last twice Saturday to
extinguish a blaze that got out of control. The fire rekindled on
Wednesday as low humidities and strong winds produced dangerous red
flag warning conditions. Check specific regulations in your area
before starting any outdoor burning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: In an unusual occurrence, the national high
and low temperatures for the day were both registered in the same
state. The national low was set at Springerville, Arizona high on
the Mogollon Rim with 21F, and the afternoon high was set with 101 in
Kingman in the western Arizona desert. Follow my weather history
