==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: It is a hot and breezy Saturday here in Central Alabama.
West winds at 10-20 mph are occasionally gusting to over 25 mph.
Temperatures will top out well into the upper 80s to lower 90s in most
locations. In some places, it will be the warmest weather we have seen this
year.

STORMS: A wavy, basically stationary frontal boundary is over Tennessee
this afternoon. Thunderstorms were firing over eastern Tennessee where
there was less of an atmospheric lid in place. The airmass south of the
front is expected to become more unstable with time and thunderstorms will
fire further to the south, down into Northeast Alabama. The storms that do
form will have sufficient shear to get organized quickly and several will
become severe. The primary threats will be from large hail and damaging
winds. The storms should remain northeast of a line from Centre to
Guntersville to Decatur to Florence. South of that line, the airmass is
more conditionally unstable, but the lid is stronger. Can't rule out a storm
in the Anniston-Birmingham-Jasper area today through.

TONIGHT: Any storms that do form will die down before 10 p.m. It will be
warm overnight, with lows struggling to get very far past 70 degrees. Most
areas will see overnight lows in the 60s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Building high pressure over the Ohio Valley will push the
frontal boundary on southward by Monday. It will be accompanied by showers
and storms Monday afternoon through the overnight. Tuesday and Wednesday
will feature less in the way of showers, but rain and storm chances will be
on the rise later in the week as a significant disturbance approaches from
the northwest.

TROPICS: It is hard to believe that we are already closely scrutinizing the
tropics. The Atlantic and Caribbean are quiet except for a couple of weak
tropical waves. The Gulf is quiet thanks to sprawling high pressure.
Looking ahead, overnight runs of the GFS depict a low in the Gulf in the
coming week and another one around June 4-5.

RECORD BIN: Record warmth continued across the West on Friday. Alamosa,
CO is a gem in the San Luis Valley of South Central Colorado, surrounded by
the spectacular vista of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. I am sure that
J.B. knows it well. It was 81F in Alamosa yesterday. Even Alaska got in on
the act, where it was 60F in Cold Bay, breaking the old record of 56F. To
the east, the 86F at Colorado Springs, tying the record. In the central
part of the country, it reached 96F in Tulsa, OK yesterday, establishing a
new record. On the other side of the coin, it was cool in the East. You
needed a jacket in Pittsburgh yesterday, where the afternoon high was a
chilly 51F, a record cool high temperature for the date. It was 67F in Key
West this morning, one degree cooler than any previous May 20th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1883: The tiny Indonesian Island of Krakatau was shook by a
series of loud explosions that signaled that the long-dormant volcano on the
uninhabited island was active once again. Residents on the neighboring
islands of Sumatra and Java were not really concerned as the island's
rumblings grew in intensity over the next few months. On August 27th, the
major eruption sent a cloud of burning ash toward the island of Sumatra,
where many residents were burned to death. But the major disaster resulted
when tsunamis triggered by the massive blast emanated outward from Krakatau.
Waves up to 130 feet high swept the islands of Java and Sumatra. All in
all, 36,000 people were killed by the eruptions and resultant tsunamis.

...Isolated Strong Storm Today?...

GOOD MORNING: It's gonna be a warm one across Central Alabama on this
Saturday. In fact, temperatures will approach the warmest readings so far
this year. It was 91 back on April 18th and 19th. Temperatures will rise
into the upper 80s inmost locations with a few locations topping out at 90.
Not really anywhere near the record high for the date, which is 97F set four
years ago.

STORMS TODAY? While we will have warm temperatures this afternoon across
the area, moisture levels will be a little on the low side for widespread
storms. In addition, a fairly strong capping inversion will be in place
across the area, but the proximity of a cold frontal boundary to the north
of Alabama will likely spark a few isolated storms this afternoon. The WRF
model is more aggressive than either of the main forecasting model, and it
is usually good in handling such situations, so we will pay attention to it.
It Is not inconceivable that storms that do form have a chance to be severe.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow promises to be a lot like today, with the boundary hanging
around just to our north. This will give a chance of an isolated shower or
storm mainly to northern sections.. It will be another warm one tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: The front begins to disintegrate by Monday, but occasional
disturbances in the northwest flow could deliver a shower or storm, but
chances are small for the foreseeable future. As a trough sets up over the
Northeast U.S. by midweek, a northwest to southeast frontal boundary will
set up across the South. We could see a little better chance of showers and
storms, especially by Thursday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Things look unsettled for next weekend, with warm,
humid and showery conditions. Southern Gulf looks unsettled by the first
week of June also.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Charles Lindbergh took off from Long Island in
dreary, misting weather. Thirty three hours later, he landed in Paris, the
first
person to complete a trans Atlantic flight between New York and Paris.

NOT OCTOBER-LIKE ANYMORE: Too bad that we could not store a zillion
boxcars of our recent cool, fresh air and throw open the doors in mid July.
Too late. We may not see any really cool mornings until autumn.
The heat is on-at least a modified version. Instead of highs in the
70s and lows in the 40s, our highs now will go into the 80s almost every day
for the rest of May. Some communities may flirt with 90 tomorrow. The most
difficult part of the forecast is which days will have showers and
thunderstorms and how many. We think they will be scarce for the next
several days.
This afternoon a small cluster of showers and storms was migrating
toward the SE from West Tennessee. They will be moving into an area of drier
air. Dew points across North and Central Alabama this afternoon were quite
low in the mid 40s. The Storm Prediction Center had the Tennessee Valley
area outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon and
tonight. So far, no problems. Roughly the north one-third of Alabama is also
outlooked that way for Saturday.
We believe that Sunday should be dry, otherwise there is a small
risk of a shower or thunderstorm almost any day through Tuesday. That means
that most areas by far will remain dry.
THE OLD THERMOMETER: Going upward. We are looking for a high of 88
Saturday and then in the mid 80s through at least the middle of next week.
No more cool 40s at night, in fact lows will be mostly in the mid 60s.
DeSoto State Park did enjoy one more night in the 40s. Their low this
morning was 41 and Ft. Payne Airport 45.
DATELINE GULF OF MEXICO: Visible satellite photographs today show
that the Gulf is quiet as a mouse. Sea surface temperatures are warming, but
still not alarmingly high. The water temperature was 76 over the NE Gulf
today, 80 in the South Gulf, 81 in the Florida Keys and 83 in the NW
Caribbean. Rest assured the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean will be watched
like a flock of hawks through the coming hurricane season.
WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Along the Alabama-NW Florida coast, looks
like a real nice weekend. Daily highs 85 to 88 and lows at night 66 to 68.
Few if any showers, in fact, sunshine will predominate.
LOOKING IN ALL DIRECTIONS: 116 in Death Valley yesterday...28 this
morning at Eagle River, Wisconsin...Boston reports 11.63 inches of rain for
the first 18 days of May...more heavy rain in parts of the NE today
including some severe thunderstorm warnings for NYC.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Ever felt like you were under constant
surveillance by a security camera? That's the way I feel in my own house
because of Little Miss Molly. Every time I walk through the living area to
get my numerous mandatory cups of coffee, her little head swivels slowly and
checks my every step. Even if she is asleep in my recliner, she plops her
little face up on the arm of the chair and follows my every move. I don't
mind because I pause and scratch her head every time I go by. we have
already walked a full mile today. She was in one of her very assertive modes
and it took forever. She had to stop at every house, every bush. Life goes
on. JBE

...Summer-Like Weather Is Here...

Very warm weather will headline our forecast package over the weekend.
Temperatures will peak in the 84 to 89 degree range each afternoon with a
good supply of sunshine. Dewpoints will remain relatively low for this time
of the year, so at least the humidity won't be too oppressive.

We will hang on to the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon
and evening, and if storms do develop they could be strong to severe. The
Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk of severe storms today for
the northern third of the state. But, any storms that fire up should be
widely spaced, and many neighborhoods will be dry.

The chance of afternoon showers over the weekend is so small it isn't worth
mentioning in our forecast. The warm and dry weather should continue well
into next week. Showers could show up toward the end of next week, or about
one week from now.

44 YEARS AGO: We were in the midst of a major early season heat wave. Many
people recall the big snows during winters in the early 60s, but few
remember the big heat waves we also experienced. On May 19, 1962 the high in
Birmingham was 98 degrees, and we were in the midst of a string of seven
consecutive days with record highs, all between 96 and 98 degrees.

ROAMING: Cincinnati, OH was soaked with 1.02" of rain yesterday. Death
Valley, CA was like a blast furnace again yesterday; their high was 116
degrees, the hottest spot in the nation. The high in Phoenix was 104. Up in
Alaska, Anaktuvuk Pass recorded a low of 21. Stanley, Idaho reported a
frosty 31 degrees. Yesterday's high in Akron, Ohio was only 57 degrees, and
they probably won't see 60 again today.

THERMOMETER HEADS UPWARD: For the first time in a long while, there
were not many temperatures in the 40s across Alabama this morning. One of
the coolest was 47 in Pinson. Most every other location was 50 or higher.
This is a trend indicator, because our temperatures will be getting more
May-like over the next few days with even some early June-like high
temperatures.

Brisk SW winds were blowing across the state today gusting to near
30 mph in some areas. The wind will diminish this evening. For Friday, we
look for a high in the mid 80s with a slight chance of an afternoon or
evening thunderstorm. A few of those could be strong.

Getting even hotter Saturday and Sunday with highs in the upper 80s,
but few if any showers or storms. See our day-by-day forecast for all of the
details.

SEVERE WEATHER ROUND UP: The Storm Prediction Center has a slight
risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight from North Carolina
northward across Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Southern Ohio,
Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Eastern New York State. Their outlook
for Friday includes a slight risk over the north one-third of Mississippi,
much of Tennessee and about the north one-half of Alabama. We have chosen to
not mention severe in our forecast for tomorrow until we can see some more
information. We did mention a few strong storms. The SPC thinks that wind
shear will be favorable and there will be a cold front pushing down into
North Alabama and stalling diagonally across the state from NW to SE.

The critical flood situation over the NE is slowly abating, but some
more showers and thunderstorms will reach that area tomorrow. Presque Isle,
Maine received 1.70 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Amazingly, Beverly,
Massachusetts has received 15.90 inches so far this month.

ROAMING ELSEWHERE: A record 98 at Pelton Dam, Oregon Wednesday
making them 26 degrees hotter than Birmingham...the hottest in the country
was 116 in Death Valley...some cold temperatures this morning included 32 in
Stanley, Idaho, Lake Yellowstone (inside the park) and at Big Fork,
Minnesota...in Alaska, the coldest was 25 at Atqasak and Barrow...the snow
cover in Barrow has melted down to only 12 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Wanted to call your attention to A
Tiny Corner of the World story on the 33/40 BLOG. Barbara Tanner gave me
permission to use her great story. It is a story of gladness and sadness
dealing with their little dog. It is another tear jerker, but if it will
make us pay more attention to our pets, it will be very useful. Scan down
until you see My Tiny Corner of the World or click on the Ms. Molly category
on the right side menu...thanks to James Spann for covering the afternoon
edition for the last two days while my wife was hospitalized. She is doing
great...so is Miss Molly...I was in my weather office just before sunrise
and I saw something that resembled a ball of cotton bouncing across our
driveway. Looking closer, it was a baby rabbit hopping all over the place. I
am so glad that Little Miss Molly was still asleep, otherwise she would have
gone into cardiac arrest and I would have had to rush her to the PER (Puppy
Emergency Room). A few minutes later, Molly and I were out walking just as
the sun was rising. We were glad to hear a long old crow cawing. We had not
seen or heard one in three weeks. We consider them our friends. We did
encounter a fat rat strolling across the walking track. I missed him with my
accurate blue scoop and was unable to reach him with my foot. Sure glad
Molly didn't see that either. Life goes on.

...The Warm-Up Begins Today...

A warming trend begins across Alabama today. Most places will reach the
upper 70s this afternoon, which is still below the normal high of 81. If we
do remain below 81 degrees today, this will be the 14th day in a row with
temperatures below normal. The air is relatively dry and stable and most
communities will be rain-free.

Tomorrow we should go into the 80s for the first time since May 4. A few
showers are possible late tomorrow afternoon, but they should be very
isolated, and mainly in areas northeast of Birmingham.

WARM WEEKEND: Warm weather fans will love the weekend as the weather will
feel much more like summer. We expect afternoon temperatures in the mid 80s
on Saturday and Sunday with a good deal of sunshine both days. Some spots in
West Alabama might even reach the upper 80s. The chance of any one spot
seeing a shower is very small. The dry and warm weather should last into the
first two days of next week.

NEXT RAIN: At the moment it looks like our next decent chance of significant
rain (other than isolated showers) is about one week away, late Wednesday
and Thursday of next week.

A WET YEAR: Birmingham's rain total for the year is now 29.72", a surplus of
6.57".

A DRY YEAR: In contrast, Mobile's rain total since January 1 is only 11.91",
a whopping 14.55" below normal.

SIZZLING HEAT: The desert southwest is baking. The high yesterday in Death
Valley, CA was 116 degrees, 18 degrees away from their all time high of 134
recorded on July 10, 1913. The mercury reached 104 degrees in Phoenix. Even
Montana was warm yesterday; the high in Great Falls was 87; they expect 90
there today.

==================================================================

A COOL MAY SO FAR: Cool weather has been the story for Alabama
during the first half of May. For the first 16 days of the month, the
average high in Birmingham was only 74.7 degrees, considerably below normal.
We have reached 80 degrees on only two days (May 3 and 4), and on May 10 and
15 we failed to reach 70. The coolest temperature so far this month at the
Birmingham Airport was 48, but Pinson yesterday morning dropped to 43. Very
refreshing indeed.

THIS EVENING: We will maintain the chance of scattered showers and
storms this evening as very cold air aloft continues to make for an unstable
airmass. All of the showers should be over by midnight.

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: A warming trend begins tomorrow, as the mercury
heads for the upper 70s. Then, we will break the 80 degree barrier Friday
afternoon as temperatures get back to where they should be in mid-May in
Alabama. The chance of rain tomorrow seems to be so small it isn't worth a
mention in our formal forecast. A few showers might show up late Friday
afternoon, but they are most likely north of Birmingham.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: At this point the weather for the weekend looks
warm and mostly dry. While we can't totally rule out a shower on Saturday
and Sunday, they should be very widely spaced. High temperatures will be in
the low to mid 80s, with we should see a decent amount of sunshine on both
days.

LONG TERM: The upper air pattern over North America will slowly
change as we go through the latter part of May. The first half of the month
has
featured a very deep upper air trough over the eastern U.S., the reason for
our cool temperatures. The flow should flatten out a bit and move northward,
meaning our weather will be warmer and more humid during the final week of
May. Another words, the weather will look and feel more like summer.

There have been some hints at an early season tropical system
forming in the northeast Gulf of Mexico on some computer model runs. Nothing
to hang our hat on how, but it is not totally out of the question. Early
season tropical systems are usually weak, with the greatest problem coming
from heavy rain and flooding. The core of the tropical season, when the most
violent hurricanes usually develop, will come during August, September, and
the first part of October when the water is very warm and waves coming off
the coast of Africa have a long time to grow stronger.

THE NAME GAME: The first named tropical storm of the 2006 hurricane
season will be "Alberto". Names to come include Beryl, Chris, Debby,
Ernesto, and Florence.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Coldest spot in the nation this morning was
Stanley, Idaho with 30 degrees. Here in Alabama, one of the coolest places
was Desoto State Park with a chilly 45 degrees. In contrast, the desert
southwest is dealing with blistering heat; Death Valley, CA reached 114
yesterday.

MISS MOLLY?: J.B. Elliott is taking a few days off. he will be back

...More Scattered Showers Today...

Today is a new day, but we have an old forecast. Cooler than normal
temperatures, intervals of sunshine, and scattered afternoon showers and
thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet this afternoon is
about one in four, and high temperatures should be in the low 70s, about ten
degrees below normal for mid-May.

A COOL MAY: The temperature has reached the 80 degree mark on only two days
this month, and today is the 13th day in a row with below normal
temperatures.

WARMER DAYS: The major upper air trough that has been parked over the
eastern half of the nation will slowly weaken over the latter half of the
week, which will mean a warming trend for Alabama. We expect to see upper
70s here tomorrow, and low 80s by Friday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: For the moment it looks like any showers on Saturday and
Sunday will be rather isolated across Alabama. High temperatures will be in
the low 80s, and there should be some good periods of sunshine on both days.

SUPER TYPHOON: Typhoon Chanchu left the Philippines yesterday, leaving 52
people dead or missing and more than 53,000 people forced to find shelter in
school houses and seaport terminals. The typhoon will impact Hong Kong this
morning, and is headed for the China coast. Maximum sustained winds are now
near 120 mph, but some weakening is expected by the time it reaches the
China coast.

HODGEPODGE: Yesterday's high in Salt Lake City was 90 degrees; that tied the
record high for the date and was 18 degrees warmer than Birmingham's 72. The
mercury in Mobile yesterday morning dropped to 49 degrees, a new record low
for the date.

A REFRESHING MORNING: Check out these lows around Alabama today:

Pinson 43
Concord 45
Cullman Airport (Vinemont) 45
Munford 46
Tuscaloosa 46
Troy 46
Evergreen 46
Crossville 46
Desoto State Park 46
Cheaha State Park 47
Inverness 47
Birmingham Airport 48
Auburn 48
Huntsville 49
Mobile 49
Montgomery 49

These chilly morning temperatures follow a day when most North
Alabama communities failed to reach 70 degrees. These values are a good 15
degrees below normal for mid-May in Alabama.

A COOL MONTH: Data from the Birmingham Airport shows that we have
reached the 80 degree mark on only two days this month (May 3 and May 4).
Today is the 12th day in a row with temperatures below normal.

SHORT TERM: We will maintain the chance of a few scattered showers
this evening as energy rotates around a major upper air low that continues
to spin away north of Alabama. Temperatures will remain cool tonight; most
spots will reach the low 50s by daybreak tomorrow, but the colder valleys
will be in the upper 40s.

Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds with the chance of a
few scattered showers. Temperatures will reach the low 70s, still well below
normal for the middle of May in Alabama.

A warming trend begins Thursday as we reach the upper 70s, and low
80s are likely by Friday. Most of the day Thursday and Friday should be
rain-
free.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We will mention a few scattered showers on Saturday
and Sunday with a weak front nearby, but moisture will be limited and the
main upper dynamics will be shifting to the north. No wash-out, and a large
percentage of the weekend should be dry. Temperatures will be warm with
afternoon readings in the low 80s in most areas.

HODGEPODGE: The latest temperature in the 40s recorded in Birmingham
came on June 25, 1974 when the low was 49 degrees. We came close to reaching
the 40s on July 15, 1967 when the mercury dropped to 51 degrees. The coldest
spot in the nation this morning was Limon, CO with a frosty 28 degrees. J.B.
Elliott is taking the day off; he will return with "My Little Corner Of the
World" tomorrow!

...Temperatures Stay Cool...

A large upper low, with a circulation that covers much of the eastern half
of the nation, continues to spin away north of Alabama today. This system
hasn't moved much in the past 48 hours, and won't move much today or
tomorrow. The vast circulation will bring a few cloudy periods to the
northern half of the state, and the chance of a few scattered showers.
Rainfall amounts should be light and spotty, but a few spots could get wet
today and tomorrow.

Temperatures will remain well below normal for May. Yesterday's official
high in Birmingham was only 67 degrees, 14 degrees below the normal high of
81.

At one point during an afternoon shower around 4:30 p.m, the mercury in
Gadsden was a chilly 53 degrees.

High temperatures today will be generally in the upper 60s, with low 70s
tomorrow.

The upper trough will begin to lose amplitude later in the week, allowing
for a warming trend here in Alabama. We should be in the upper 70s on
Thursday,
and low 80s are likely by Friday. Thursday should be dry, but a few showers
could show up late Friday and Friday night as a cold front zips through.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now the weekend is looking mostly rain-free. We will
forecast partly sunny days on Saturday and Sunday with afternoon
temperatures in the low 80s. The chance of rain at this point looks very
small.

WARM WEST: While the eastern U.S. is enjoying chilly weather for May, the
west is baking. In Salt Lake City, Utah yesterday the high was 88 degrees;
which tied the record for the date. The hottest place in the nation was
Bullhead City, AZ with 108. Phoenix also dealt with triple digit heat;
their high was 101.

SAVING ON YOUR POWER BILL: Today marks the 11th day in a row that
high temperatures have been below normal across Central Alabama. In fact,
for the first two weeks of May, our high temperature has averaged 4 degrees
per day cooler than normal. Only 3 days were warmer than normal. This should
save on your power bill.

WHAT IS GOING ON NOW: Without getting too technical, the big upper
level low pressure system that was over the Great Lakes was over Cincinnati
this morning and will be over Pennsylvania tomorrow morning and finally over
New Hampshire late Tuesday. This system is so broad that it will keep winds
aloft over Alabama out of the west or NW. Some colder temperatures aloft
will also be spreading down into our area.

Moisture, however, is going to be rather limited for the next
several days. Even so, we could see a few afternoon showers or thunderstorms
each day except Thursday. Most areas will remain dry and on most days the
chance of you seeing one will only be about 1 in 5. Nights will continue
pleasantly cool, but finally the afternoons will warm up to around 80 by
Thursday and Friday.

ANOTHER COOL MORNING: Here are just a few of the lowest temperatures
around Alabama:

39 in DeSoto State Park
41 in Cullman and Hamilton
42 in Crossville
45 in Heflin and Addison
46 in Decatur, Ft. Payne, Jasper, Wedowee
47 in Pinson, Huntsville, Albertville, Ashville

THE NORTHEAST FLOODING: It is very, very serious and some reports
say it is the worst in over half a century. Governors in New Hampshire,
Maine and Massachusetts declared a state of emergency. Boston got nearly 4
inches of rain Sunday and they have now received almost 11 inches this
month, which is 9 inches above normal.

DATELINE SOUTH POLE: The bottom of the world is an extremely
interesting spot for weather unlike any other place on earth. The sun rises
around September 21 and sets each year about March 21. The old thermometer
drops below 50 below zero on an average of 250 days a year. The elevation is
over 9,000 feet and most of that footage is an immense layer of ice.

MONDAY TIDBITS: 25 in Limon, Colo., was the coldest in the lower 48
this morning-almost as cold as Alaska's low of 20 in good old
Deadhorse...hottest Sunday 114 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A most embarrassing incident on the
walking track. On a Saturday afternoon walk, a new dog in the community-the
one that has a long whining bark which ends with a sudden high note-came
through the hedgerow to greet Little Miss Molly. Miss Molly could not wait
to reach her. As dogs always do, they examine every square inch of each
other's body. I sure am glad that humans don't do that. After their
sniffing, the new dog starting chasing Molly who went round and round in
20-foot circles as far as the leash would stretch. Finally, she got afraid
and became airborne and landed against my knees wanting me to protect her.
It so happens that I have been losing weight. All my trousers are too large.
Molly caused my pants to suddenly fall below my knees. I mooned that poor
little dog. There I was trying to untangle the leash around my ankles,
rescue Molly and at the same time trying to pull up my pants. I looked in
all directions and did not see anyone. Hope noone was looking out the
window. I would never be able to get over the embarrassment. Life goes on
and Molly always provides plenty of excitement-sometimes too much!

...Happy Monday To You...

GOOD MORNING: This morning's forecast comes to you from beautiful Park
City, Utah. It is nice to be back out west. Hopefully, this will be the
first of many visits.

OUR WEATHER FLIP FLOPPED: The expected high today here in Park City is 77.
That is going to be nearly ten degrees warmer than the high in Birmingham.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: All you have to do is go to the 500 millibars chart
(about 18,000 feet up in the atmosphere) to see why our weather roles are
reversed. Utah and the western United States is located under a huge ridge
of high pressure that is giving them fine, warm weather. Meanwhile, Alabama
and the East as you might expect is dealing with a cold upper low and
trough.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The huge upper low to our north will begin lifting out to
the northeast later tomorrow, but it will leave the big trough in place over
the East, keeping us cool through midweek. Temperatures will average some
10-15 degrees below normal through Wednesday. The trough lifts out enough
for our flow to flatten by Thursday, leading to more sunshine and more
normal temperatures. High pressure over the northern Gulf holds approaching
fronts at bay until Saturday. .

WEEKEND: Big high pressure over the Midwest will sink southward pushing a
complex set of low pressure systems towards Alabama by Saturday night and
Sunday. Our rain chances will increase Saturday night and Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1966: A red letter day in tropical cyclone forecasting.
The NIMBUS II satellite was launched. The NUMBUS I satellite had failed
after launch. The NIMBUS series were the first polar orbiting satellites.
They gave worldwide satellite coverage at least twice per day, eliminating
"surprise" tropical cyclones.
