...More Scattered Showers Today...

Today is a new day, but we have an old forecast. Cooler than normal
temperatures, intervals of sunshine, and scattered afternoon showers and
thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet this afternoon is
about one in four, and high temperatures should be in the low 70s, about ten
degrees below normal for mid-May.

A COOL MAY: The temperature has reached the 80 degree mark on only two days
this month, and today is the 13th day in a row with below normal
temperatures.

WARMER DAYS: The major upper air trough that has been parked over the
eastern half of the nation will slowly weaken over the latter half of the
week, which will mean a warming trend for Alabama. We expect to see upper
70s here tomorrow, and low 80s by Friday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: For the moment it looks like any showers on Saturday and
Sunday will be rather isolated across Alabama. High temperatures will be in
the low 80s, and there should be some good periods of sunshine on both days.

SUPER TYPHOON: Typhoon Chanchu left the Philippines yesterday, leaving 52
people dead or missing and more than 53,000 people forced to find shelter in
school houses and seaport terminals. The typhoon will impact Hong Kong this
morning, and is headed for the China coast. Maximum sustained winds are now
near 120 mph, but some weakening is expected by the time it reaches the
China coast.

HODGEPODGE: Yesterday's high in Salt Lake City was 90 degrees; that tied the
record high for the date and was 18 degrees warmer than Birmingham's 72. The
mercury in Mobile yesterday morning dropped to 49 degrees, a new record low
for the date.
