A REFRESHING MORNING: Check out these lows around Alabama today:

Pinson 43
Concord 45
Cullman Airport (Vinemont) 45
Munford 46
Tuscaloosa 46
Troy 46
Evergreen 46
Crossville 46
Desoto State Park 46
Cheaha State Park 47
Inverness 47
Birmingham Airport 48
Auburn 48
Huntsville 49
Mobile 49
Montgomery 49

These chilly morning temperatures follow a day when most North
Alabama communities failed to reach 70 degrees. These values are a good 15
degrees below normal for mid-May in Alabama.

A COOL MONTH: Data from the Birmingham Airport shows that we have
reached the 80 degree mark on only two days this month (May 3 and May 4).
Today is the 12th day in a row with temperatures below normal.

SHORT TERM: We will maintain the chance of a few scattered showers
this evening as energy rotates around a major upper air low that continues
to spin away north of Alabama. Temperatures will remain cool tonight; most
spots will reach the low 50s by daybreak tomorrow, but the colder valleys
will be in the upper 40s.

Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds with the chance of a
few scattered showers. Temperatures will reach the low 70s, still well below
normal for the middle of May in Alabama.

A warming trend begins Thursday as we reach the upper 70s, and low
80s are likely by Friday. Most of the day Thursday and Friday should be
rain-
free.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We will mention a few scattered showers on Saturday
and Sunday with a weak front nearby, but moisture will be limited and the
main upper dynamics will be shifting to the north. No wash-out, and a large
percentage of the weekend should be dry. Temperatures will be warm with
afternoon readings in the low 80s in most areas.

HODGEPODGE: The latest temperature in the 40s recorded in Birmingham
came on June 25, 1974 when the low was 49 degrees. We came close to reaching
the 40s on July 15, 1967 when the mercury dropped to 51 degrees. The coldest
spot in the nation this morning was Limon, CO with a frosty 28 degrees. J.B.
Elliott is taking the day off; he will return with "My Little Corner Of the
World" tomorrow!
