==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a dreary late fall day across the area on this Saturday. Light rain has been occurring over parts of North Central Alabama during the morning hours, most persistently over parts of eastern Shelby, Talladega and Clay Counties.

LIGHT FREEZE TONIGHT: Clouds continue to hang tough across much of the state this afternoon. These clouds are flowing down the backside of a deep upper level trough over the eastern United States. That northerly flow is also allowing lots of cold air to flow down into Alabama. Just how long those clouds will be around is subject to conjecture for the time being, but they should begin to break up overnight. Usually, cloud cover keeps temperatures up, but in this case, the strong cold air advection will overcome the blanket effect and allow temperatures to drop to near freezing across much of the area.

SUNDAY WEATHER: High pressure along the Gulf Coast will slide eastward by tomorrow, allowing our winds to back slightly around to the west and southwest. With a good deal of sunshine, readings on Sunday will top out in the middle to upper 50s. By late Sunday night, another cold front will be barreling southeastward toward Alabama. This front should be dry, since it will not have much to work with in the way of moisture.

NEXT WEEK WEATHER: The cold front should move through during the early morning hours on Monday, veering our winds back to the northwest and starting another cold advection regime. This cold air low will produce the coldest air so far this season, with hard freezes expected Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Freezing temperatures are expected each morning through at least Saturday. Another shot of cold air will arrive late on Thursday, reinforcing the chilly weather. This front should also be dry. It will push well out into the Gulf. The next low pressure system will form along this front. It should be in its formative stages by next Saturday, when it could bring a few showers to southern sections of the state.

HOLIDAY WEEK WEATHER: Another front will move through at the start of the next week, bringing a chance of showers. Another low pressure system will form over the northern Gulf around the 22nd and move northeastward toward the Florida Panhandle. For now, it looks like the cold air and moisture will not be able to mix for any Christmas Winter Wonderland scenarios, but I am sure snow fans will be keeping their fingers crossed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: One of the century’s worst nor’easters struck the Northeast. Hurricane force winds were recorded in several locations and record high tides flooded coastal areas. New York City picked up a wind gust to 93 mph. Flooding closed LaGuardia Airport and the entire subway system in New York was shutdown for 3 hours. The wind was sustained at over 60 mph for several hours at Boston MA. Over 32 inches of snow fell at Worcester MA, which was a record for a single storm there. 37 inches of snow fell at Stanford NY. Locally known as the “Storm of the Century,” the storm would be eclipsed nationally by the massive March 1993 storm system that would officially be known by that name.

...Cool, Dry Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! A beautiful scene as I drove back into Trussville from the
airport yesterday afternoon. A rather isolated heavy shower was over the
town, and the curtains of rain were backlit by the setting sun. Nice sight!

DREARY DAY AHEAD: Well, if you needed a little touch of winter to get you
in the holiday mood, this is it. Skies will remain mostly cloudy. Skies
should remain cloudy most of the day with a brisk northwest wind.
Temperatures will not get out of the forties all day long. There is also a
chance of a few sprinkles from time to time. Skies should clear rapidly
this evening and readings will drop into the lower to middle 30s.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: By Sunday morning, high pressure over the Gulf of
Mexico will be ridging over Alabama, giving us a good deal of sunshine.
Temperatures will rise into the middle 50s.

NEXT WEEK: A reinforcing shot of cool air will arrive behind a cold front
on Monday. This front should be dry, although there could be a little light
rain during the early morning hours. Much of the state will experience a
hard freeze by Wednesday morning, with lows in the lower to middle 20s.
Freezing temperatures are expected each morning Tuesday through Friday.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: Another front will approach on Friday, but again it will
also be on the dry side. In fact, if anything, there may be a few spotty,
light showers associated with it.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: The numerical weather prediction model ensembles don't
foretell any exceptionally cold air out there through Christmas. A broad
trough should cover the eastern half of the country that week, but it will
not be able to transport appreciable amounts of cold air to the south. The
crystal ball indicates some wet weather at midweek that week, but it should
be gone, and it should be liquid, not frozen.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Snow finally fell in Syracuse NY, the latest that the
snowy city had recorded its first measurable snow of the season. It was
four days after Las Vegas and Phoenix saw snow!

A BUSY WEATHER MAP: As we look out all across the great North American
landscape (well, let's say weatherscape), we detect some weather changes
underway. We invite you to look closely at our day-by-day forecast. In a
nutshell, you will find a break from frequent big rain events and a trend
toward colder weather and even a hard freeze. We had a situation today where
much colder air moved in aloft making the atmosphere unstable and a bit
angry. Even the clouds looked angry this afternoon. A thunderstorm formed
near Huntsville and produced hail large enough to trigger severe
thunderstorm warnings for Madison and Jackson Counties.

The wind will not die down much tonight, so it's going to feel cold. We will
probably have some intermittent light rain overnight and even a few
sprinkles Saturday morning. Saturday is going to be a rather raw day with
highs only in the mid 40s and NW winds averaging 10-20 mph. Our main influx
of colder air will be Tuesday and Tuesday night. By daybreak Wednesday, low
temperatures in Central Alabama will probably be in the mid 20s-some places
as cold as 22-24.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's 4A Championship Game between Demopolis and
Deshler, it will be breezy and cold with temperatures in the 40s. You will
need to dress warm. For the SWAC Championship Game between Alabama State and
Southern University at Legion Field Saturday afternoon, breezy and cold with
game time temperatures in the mid 40s with NW winds 10-20 mph.

FRIDAY WRAP UP: Muscle Shoals, in the NW corner of Alabama, has now
received almost 70 inches of rain this year-an excess of 18 inches...one of
the ABC 33/40 weather watchers, Danny Hill in Helena, was disappointed when
his chest freezer went kerplunk and his treasured souvenir snowball from the
Blizzard of '93 melted...a nice story on TV last night about Alston Keith,
the ABC 33/40 weather watcher from Inverness...really enjoyed a trip to
Cullman Wednesday to see longtime friend Jim McCravy being presented with
the Thomas Jefferson Award-a very rare honor. James Spann has a nice story
about that on today's 33/40 weather blog...I plead not guilty to the last
paragraph of that story...49 inches of new snow in the last three days at
Sundance in the North Utah mountains and 33 inches at Tony Grove Lake (one
of our favorite camping spots)...summer-like heat in South Texas with 90 in
Laredo...coldest this morning was 8 at Doylesville, Colorado...sometimes in
winter a huge mass of cold air will cross the North Pole and head south.
That is when Alabama can have some of its coldest weather...it was 57 below
zero at Ojmjakon, Siberia today and they will have 63 below over the
weekend. We're not saying that will head toward us right away.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly would not even speak to me
when she crawled out of bed this morning. She may be giving me the cold
shoulder because I did not have a vigorous late night play session with her.
As soon as we hit the walking trail, she was friendly again. Molly and I
have become a fixture around the community. I'm sure the neighbors say,
"Well, there goes Molly and Mr. Pooper-Scooper." I always have that little
blue scoop in my hand, not only to clean up after Molly, but to do courtesy
scoops where other dogs have passed by. Some of the scooping I did this
morning made me think an elephant had been through the community. Life goes
on, despite the size of the scoops.

...Colder Days Ahead...

A change to colder weather is ahead for Alabama over the next few days as a
deep upper air trough forms over the eastern part of the nation.
Temperatures will hover in the 50 to 55 degree range all day today, with
plenty of clouds, a brisk westerly wind, and some scattered light rain or
drizzle. Late tonight and early tomorrow, a few snow flurries are possible
across northeast Alabama as colder air continues to flow into the state. The
best chance of flurries will be across higher terrain in DeKalb, Cherokee,
Marshall, and Jackson counties.

Saturday promises to be a blustery day, with temperatures in the 40s, a cold
northwest wind, and only gradual clearing. Then, by Sunday morning, a light
freeze is likely for most places.

EVEN COLDER: The coldest air so far this season is scheduled to roll in here
beginning Monday night of next week. On Tuesday, temperatures will have a
hard time getting out of the 30s, with wind chill values below freezing much
of the day. Wednesday morning should feature our first hard freeze of the
season, with low temperatures in the 20 to 25 degree range for much of north
and central Alabama.

THE LONG RANGE: The computer models continue to suggest a rather cold and
unsettled weather pattern for much of the deep south over the latter half of
December. I will be surprised if we go through the rest of the month without
at least one snow or ice threat based on the pattern.

Keep in mind Birmingham has never had a white Christmas in the classic sense
(snow on the ground Christmas morning), and weather records here go back to
about 1880. So, needless to say, odds are against us. But, if the longer
range models are correct, Christmas looks pretty cold.

MORE QUICK CHANGES: As you probably noticed overnight, our weather made
another quick turnaround. We awoke to stormy conditions and very heavy
rainfall. Continuing the quick change routine, we will see a cold front move
through overnight bringing cooler temperatures. However, the rain will not
completely end as we expect still a chance of showers tonight and a little
bit of left over light rain or drizzle Friday.

A tornado watch was in effect for 27 counties in Central and West Alabama
this morning. We don't have any confirmed reports of a tornado touchdown,
although a tornado warning was in effect early today for Pickens and
Tuscaloosa Counties. We are always reluctant to down play any possible
damage this early in the game, because often delayed damage reports come in
from remote areas.

Flash flooding was also a problem again today. Places like Huntsville had a
Flash Flood Warning. We saw John Gordon, the Meteorologist in Charge of the
Huntsville NWS Forecast Office yesterday. We told him that we have
designated the Tennessee Valley as the Flash Flood Capitol of the USA. Not
trying to be funny, because it is not a funny matter, but they have really
caught it lately. At Huntsville Airport, an additional 1.61 inches of rain
had fallen by 6 o'clock this morning. Doppler radar estimates over 3 inches
in Southern Lamar and extreme NW Pickens County.

AN OVERALL PATTERN CHANGE? We think we will see fewer severe weather events
in the near future as out weather takes on a colder trend. By Monday
afternoon, a fast moving cold front will move across Alabama. Behind the
front will be a sprawling 1040 millibar high pressure area. Tuesday will
also be windy and much colder. We believe we will have the lowest
temperatures so far this season by Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as
temperatures bottom out in the mid-20s across Central Alabama. Some of the
colder valleys could even have 22 or 23. Some north Alabama communities
might not get out of the 30s on Tuesday, with wind chill values below
freezing much of the day.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS: Warmest yesterday was 85 in Harlingen, Texas and coldest
in the lower 48 this morning was 15 at Caribou and Frenchville, Maine.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have had zero time to spend with little Miss
Molly today and she lets us know it. She has gone from one to the other,
standing on her hind legs and putting her front paws as high up on us as she
can begging for attention...hope to spend some time with her this afternoon
and play catch up...did play some games late last night with her, including
tug rope, kick ball and chase ball. When I went to bed around 11, she had 13
of her toys scattered across the living area and even at 11:00 p.m. she
grabbed one when I started toward the bedroom wanting to play. -Life goes
on.

...Yet Another Good Soaking...

Once again today Alabama will have the dual threat of severe thunderstorms
and flash flooding as a fast moving storm system sweeps through the state.
Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, and some storms might produce
damaging winds. In addition, we cannot rule out the possibility of a few
isolated tornadoes.

The heavier storms will move rapidly east of Alabama by mid to late
afternoon, but clouds will hang around through tomorrow along with chance of
some lingering light rain or drizzle. Temperatures will also be much cooler
tomorrow, and by Saturday most places hold in the 40s with a very chilly
northwest wind. It might be Saturday afternoon before we see a decent amount
of sunshine. We should also mention it is possible for a few snow flurries
to show up tomorrow night or Saturday morning over the northeast part of the
state, mainly on ridge tops in Cherokee, DeKalb, and Jackson counties.
Nothing more than a dusting is expected if the flurries develop.

MORE COLD: Another blast of cold air arrives early next week as an Arctic
front blasts through here late Monday. Moisture looks pretty limited with
that front, so we have mentioned only a few sprinkles at this time.
The coldest air so far this season arrives on Tuesday, and many places
across north Alabama could hold in the 30s all day. By Wednesday morning, we
are projecting early morning temperatures in the 21 to 26 degree range, the
first real hard freeze of the season.

With the cold air in place, we will continue to look for signs of a wintry
weather threat toward the end of next week. Model data is simply too
inconsistent right now to discuss any significant threat for Alabama.
