...Dry Weather Through Weekend...

Just think, it wasn't long ago when our normal high was 52 and the normal
low 32. Today the normal high is 63 and the normal low 40. Back then, in the
colder time, the sun did not rise until 6:52 and it went down on the western
horizon at 4:39. Today the sunrise was at 6:12 and it will set at 5:46. So,
we have gained 107 minutes of daylight since some of our shorter days back
in late December and early January.

We will see quite a bit of that sunlight today as temperatures moderate
quickly this morning and level on in the 60s this afternoon. We will also
have mid 60s on Saturday as the dry weather continues. We will actually have
a cold front moving through during the day Saturday, but it will not be that
noticeable. Following the front, it should get no colder than the mid 30s
Sunday morning.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It still looks like that will hold off until Monday. A cold
front will be approaching Central Alabama during the day. This should set
off some showers by afternoon and those showers will increase in number
Monday night. We think the system will move fast enough to where most or all
of the showers will be out of here by Tuesday morning. Tuesday will also be
cooler with highs dropping back to the 50s.

FRIDAY NOTES: The warmest spots in the USA Thursday afternoon were Laredo
and McAllen in extreme South Texas with 79...the low in the lower 48 was
minus 28 at Hurley, Minnesota...much of northern Minnesota is still covered
by 6 to 18 inches of snow...up in extreme Northern Canada, temperatures are
hanging out between 38 and 42 below zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I think I played with little Miss Molly more
yesterday more than ever. The little nut, she never gets enough. I think her
ideal lifestyle would be to sleep, eat and play with playtime taking up at
least half her day. She loves for me to get about 8 of her toys and pitch
them across the living area for her to chase down and bring back to me. Her
favorites are several balls and a cloth deer.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Greetings from Starkville, Mississippi and Mississippi State University, site of the fourth annual Southeast Severe Storms Symposium. Hold on just a minute. It is a day of gurus talking about all kinds of tropical and severe weather. Wait a minute. I get to go speak about my storm chasing adventures last Spring. For thirty minutes, we will go from gurus to a yahoo. Be right back...

A BIT WINDY OUT THERE: Can you say breezy? I knew you could. It is so funny how accurate those weather truisms can be. After all, it is early March. You know, the roaring in like a lion thing. Winds have been gusting to over 25 mph at times across the area, prompting the issuance of a Lake Wind Advisory. An early season boaters or fisherpeople should exercise caution in the gusty winds today.

TONIGHT: Temperatures have been nice today, with readings in the 60s over the area. That fast moving cold front that is zipping across the state will bring in some slightly cooler and drier air for tonight. Readings overnight will dip into the middle 30s in most locations.

TOMORROW: Sunday promises to be a nice day with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures after that somewhat chilly start. Highs tomorrow will top out in the lower 60s.

TO MONDAY AND BEYOND: Alabama will continue under the influence of an amplified upper air pattern through much of the coming week that features a large trough over the East Coast. This puts our area on the edge of a northwesterly flow aloft. We call those little low pressure systems like the one passing to our northeast today Alberta Clippers, because they originate over that Canadian Province and dive southeast over the Great Lakes. They can be quite the potent little cyclones.

Our next weather maker will be another of these Clipper systems. By Sunday night, it will be showing up on weather maps over northern Minnesota. It will dive southeastward during the day on Monday, propelling another cold front our way. Showers will break out Monday afternoon across the area, with a good area of rain and some embedded thunderstorms moving across the area Monday night. It does not look like things will get out of hand with any severe weather. Tuesday will be blustery and cooler behind the front. Another system will deliver more rain chances late on Wednesday, followed closely by another system on Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Much of the Northeast braced for a heralded storm that was supposed to bring up to 3 feet of snow in the corridor from Philadelphia to New York City, but the storm fizzled. Flights were cancelled and schools closed but only a few inches of snow fell in New York City and even less in Philadelphia. Up to 30 inches of snow did fall in some inland locations of New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island, but for the most part, the nor’easter was a non-occurrence. The missed forecast called for one New Jersey mayor to call for meteorologists to be held accountable for missed forecasts. Conan O’Brien reported the story, saying that “there was only a 30 percent chance of that.”

GOOD AFTERNOON: There is something powerful about the increasing angle of that March sun out there. It has a tremendous ability to impart warmth to our late winter world. Temperatures were climbing into the 60s across much of the area at early afternoon. The South Central part of Alabama was cooler than northern sections, since dense fog and low clouds up until 11 a.m. gave them a late start on the daytime heating race. At 11 o’clock, it was only 48 degrees at Montgomery’s Dannelly Field, and well as Maxwell AFB and at Ozark. But by 2 p.m., they had caught up with everyone else.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: High pressure is centered near the tiny Southeast Alabama town of Ashford this afternoon. Raise your hand if you are from Ashford!

Satellite photos show high clouds streaming into Alabama from parts of Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The cirrus and cirrostratus clouds re associated with an upper level disturbance over eastern Oklahoma. Return flow around the surface high was pumping moisture up into eastern Texas and western Louisiana, where a deck of low clouds was present. The disturbance was kicking off showers over much of that area.

TONIGHT: Tonight will be some 8-14 degrees warmer than last night across most of the area. Some of the valley locations may slip into the upper 30s, but most locations will only fall into the middle 40s. Skies will be partly cloudy and it will be dry.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: With mild conditions on tap tomorrow, you might feel the urge to get out the yard equipment, or the boat or the golf clubs. (That is, if you are not heading over to Mississippi State for the Southeast Severe Storms Symposium.) But if the lake is your destination for a little fishing, keep in mind that it will be windy, with westerly winds gusting to over 25 mph.

Temperatures will warm well into the sixties, even as a mostly dry front sweeps across the area. I say mostly dry, because there is a chance there could be a few light showers along the front.

Behind the front, temperatures will drop back into the middle 30s tomorrow night. Sunday will be a nice day, with cool high pressure in control, but that warm late winter sun warming things into the lower 60s again.

WEEK AHEAD: Rain will return on Monday, with embedded storms Monday night. The models have been hinting that rainfall amounts could be a little heavier than earlier thought with this system, so I will up them slightly to an average of about one half inch. The system will move quickly through the area and it will be breezy and cooler Tuesday with clearing skies. Another quick moving system will bring another rain chance late on Wednesday, followed by another system late on Thursday or Friday.

SNOWY INAUGURATION: On this date in 1909, a massive snowstorm buried Washington during President Taft’s Inauguration. Fair weather had been forecast by the U.S. Weather Bureau, which led to great criticism of the service. 9.8 inches of snow in the nation’s capital. Travel and communications were disrupted. It was the largest snowstorm in Inaugural history.

NICE STRETCH OF DRY WEATHER: This is the time of year when the old
weather map becomes more and more active and restless. March is normally the
wettest month of the year in our area and also increasingly stormy as the
month goes on. It is also the season for dust storms in the Desert SW and
out on the Plains. On this date in 1989, a massive dust storm brought the
visibility down to zero on I-10 in Cochise County, Arizona. 25 cars crashed
in a chain reaction and two motorists were killed.

Fortunately, we don't have dust storms in Alabama due to our wetter
climate and the weather will not be very restless for several days. To the
contrary, we are expecting milder temperatures and dry weather all the way
through the weekend. For a time, we thought we may have some scattered light
rain or sprinkles on Saturday. We now believe that will stay north of our
area. While nights will still be rather chilly, the afternoons will be just
fine. For tomorrow through Monday, we expect highs in the low to mid 60s.
That is normal for early March.

That area of rain that threatened us overnight slid toward the ESE
passing entirely south of Central Alabama. A steady rain fell in places like
Evergreen and Mobile, but the rain was moving out of SE Alabama this
afternoon.

OUR NEXT RAIN: That should come Monday and Monday night and ending
Tuesday morning. Some showers will start on Monday and increase in number
Monday night. A cold front will bring an end to the showers Tuesday morning.
There is a chance we could have a few thunderstorms during that time, but
not for sure.

SKIPPING AROUND THE COUNTRY: 76 in Imperial and El Centro,
California was the warmest in the USA Wednesday...cold spots this morning
included Clarksburg, Michigan with 21 below zero and Point Lay, Alaska with
35 below...you wouldn't want to be in good old Deadhorse, Alaska today where
it was 31 below with blowing snow and a wind chill of 62 below...to
illustrate how we are getting into our prime severe weather season, on March
3, 1966 an unusually violet F5 tornado in Mississippi tore through parts of
Jackson late in the afternoon. 12 people were killed and 100 injured as a
shopping center was virtually destroyed. In Hinds County, 1,000 homes were
damaged and 19 persons killed. Another six died in Rankin and Leak Counties
and 26 died in Scott County. Total 57 persons killed, 504 injured.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: How would you like to go outdoors only
if you had a leash around your neck and not stay very long each time? I have
often wondered what little Miss Molly thinks as she lives a life like that.
That little bundle of joy is just as happy as a lark. She leads a contented
life and she is rewarded only with lots of playtime and loving and
occasionally a treat. She looks forward to a little tiny treat as much as
humans look forward to two weeks at the beach or the mountains. We need to
take lessons from those little ones, because we humans are somewhat spoiled.
We really enjoyed our early morning walk. Birds were everywhere. It's one of
the few times that we have seen and heard birds talking to us on every bit
of the half-mile walk. One sounded like he was doing the bird version of
weather radio...another one was anxious as we were close to her nest. Life
goes on and I don't know of anything more enjoyable or as interesting. The
world around us is exciting.

...Moderating Temperatures...

It was very cold across Alabama Wednesday morning, but highs
recovered to the lower 50s in most areas during the afternoon. The old
thermometer will continue to go up for the next two or three days with highs
expected to be in the lower 60s Friday. For the rest of the week and through
the weekend, lows will be mostly near 40 and highs in the lower 60s.

THE RAIN SITUATION: A disturbance moving eastward from Texas was
still trying to spread some scattered light rain into parts of Alabama late
last night and this morning. The air was so dry that most of the rain over
North and Central Alabama evaporated before reaching the ground. However,
there could be just a little scattered light rain for a time this morning
before the cloudiness begins to break up toward midday and during the
afternoon. We should have more sun than clouds on Friday. During the day
Saturday, there could be just a little scattered light rain as another front
approaches from the north. That front will not change the temperature very
much and mostly sunny weather should continue on Sunday. Early next week
there is a better chance of showers, especially Monday night and Tuesday
when there could also be some thunderstorms.

Down in South Alabama, especially near the coast, the rain will be
more widespread today.

THURSDAY NOTES: The warmest temperatures in the nation Wednesday
shifted to the California desert where it was 76 in Imperial and El Centro.
The early morning low was 24 below zero in Cook, Minnesota. No bitter cold
air is evident in Alaska at this time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Rain has been frequent enough in the
last couple of weeks to keep the ground soft in my tiny corner. In fact,
when Molly and I walk across the common area, the ground is mushy. The Old
Crow Creek, across the track from the Old Crow Motel, has had a stream of
water for at least two weeks. It normally runs only in rainy weather. Molly
and I walked well over a mile yesterday and in the sunshine she really had a
ball. Life goes on.

...A Sunny But Cold March Day...

Following some early morning clouds and pre-dawn snow flurries,
sunshine returns in full force today, but temperatures will be 15 to 18
degrees below normal for the first day of March. Strong northwest winds will
gust to 30 mph at times, and will bring in some very cold air, keeping high
temperatures in the mid 40s today.

Tonight, with a clear sky and diminishing wind, a widespread freeze
is likely with most places dropping into the 22 to 27 degree range by
daybreak tomorrow. Some of the colder valleys will drop to near 20, maybe
even reaching the upper teens in spots.

NEXT STORM: Another storm system will organize to the west of
Alabama tomorrow, and clouds will return during the afternoon. We will
mention the chance of some scattered light rain late tomorrow night and
early Thursday.

The lower atmosphere might even be cold enough for a few snow flakes
during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday, but it looks like the bulk of the
significant precipitation with this system will be over the southern half of
Alabama.

WEEKEND PEEK: A strong wave in the upper air flow will bring some
clouds to the state at times this weekend, but it looks like the snow will
remain north of us, over Tennessee and Kentucky with this "clipper" type
system. Temperatures this weekend will remain below normal for the early
part of March.

STILL DRY: Birmingham begins the month of March today with a deficit
of 3.82" of rain since January 1. March is usually our wettest month of the
year, with an average total of 6.10".

STORM ALERT 2005: We will be at Mountaintop Community Church in
Vestavia tomorrow night at 7:00. The last show of the year!

RECOVERING TEMPERATURES: Some of the lowest temperatures since
January were recorded across Alabama this morning. Let's look at some of the
lows.

17 in Valley Head
19 in Ft. Payne, Gadsden and Black Creek
20 in Talladega and Pinson
21 in Cullman, Wedowee and Russellville
22 in Jasper, Hamilton, Leeds and Moulton
23 in Decatur, Huntsville, Anniston, Mentone
24 in Birmingham, Smoke Rise, Alexander City
25 in Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Calera

Now we can look for some more reasonable temperatures. While it will
be cold again tonight, the lowest temperatures should be around 30 or 32 in
the NE Alabama valleys. Most of Central Alabama will be around 34.
Temperatures will recover to the low 50s Thursday and the low 60s Friday.

The most puzzling part of our forecast is what will happen late
tonight and early Thursday morning across Central Alabama. A disturbance to
our SW was spreading rain across SE Texas and Louisiana. There was even a
Tornado Warning for two SE Texas counties. We think almost all of this
precipitation will stay south of the Birmingham area late tonight and
tomorrow morning. It's not out of the question that you could hear a few
reports of sleet or a few snowflakes on the north edge of that precipitation

See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details. Friday through the
weekend should be mostly dry except for a slight chance of light rain or
sprinkles late Saturday or Saturday night.

DOWN THE ROAD: Things are shaping up for a possible stormy period
early next week-mainly Monday night and Tuesday morning. A vigorous low
pressure area is expected to track eastward across Tennessee, pulling a cold
front into Alabama.

STORM ALERT 2005: The final stop on this year's tour is tonight at
7:00 in Vestavia. It is at the Mountain Top Community Church-a great
facility to have the program.

QUICK THREE-DOT STUFF: A whopping 20 inches of snow on Mt.
Mitchell, North Carolina in the last 36 hours...16 inches on Mt. LeConte in
the Great Smokies with a low of 4 below zero...snowdrifts as much as 4.5
feet reported in the prime upslope locations in Johnson County of extreme NE
Tennessee...24 below this morning in Cook, Minnesota and 32 below at Barter
Island, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Molly and I love to walk on a crisp
cold morning...the birds were singing as if it were summer. Even a couple of
old crows were singing tenor...I am concerned about more and more people
ignoring the leash law. This morning I scooped 5 times as much as I do for
Molly. I feel compelled to clean it up, because I don't want to accidentally
step in something and I want to keep the area poop-free. I believe I could
make a business out of scooping. I could redesign a golf cart and call it
the "Poopmobile." It would have a variety of scoops, garbage bags, a little
revolving light on top and a little sensor that would go off when poop is
located. The business, Poop, Inc., should flourish. I might even expand the
service to pick up litter. Annie Litter would like that...maybe you have
detected that I am short on sleep...life goes on but it is a lot more fun
when I don't have to scoop so much.

...Clouds Return Late Today...

More quick weather changes are ahead for Alabama. A developing storm
system over the far northwest Gulf of Mexico will bring clouds into the
state late today after a clear and very cold morning. Some light
precipitation should move into north-central Alabama late tonight after
midnight, continuing into tomorrow morning. The lower atmosphere could be
cold enough for a few snow flakes to be mixed in with light rain along and
north of I-20, but surface temperatures are expected to remain above
freezing which should mean no travel issues if some snow does fall.

We will have to watch for the evaporative cooling effect, which
might cool surface temperatures more than we are forecasting.

The heaviest rain will be over the southern half of the state, and
all precipitation should end here by tomorrow afternoon as the system moves
on to the far eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Friday should be a dry and cool day statewide with temperatures
remaining below normal.

THE WEEKEND: A cold front is forecast to zip through the state late
Saturday night. This feature will bring some clouds back in here Saturday,
and maybe a little light rain late Saturday or Saturday night. Drier air
returns by Sunday.

SNOWY BOSTON: Boston now has a season snow total of 78 inches,
compared to an average snowfall of about 42 inches. Schools has been out so
much this year due to snow that classes have been extended to the end of
June.

STORM ALERT 2005: Tonight is your last chance to see our annual
severe weather awareness tour across the state. We will be in Vestavia at
Mountaintop Community Church at 7:00. The church is just off U.S. 31 and
near I-65. Be sure and come early to get a good seat!

NOT THINKING OF SPRING: At least today we're not, because it has been one
of the more uncomfortable days that we have had all winter. Snow flurries
occurred during the night and much of today over the northern counties. Even
early this afternoon temperatures were only in the upper 30s from Cullman
northward. Actually, some of the flurries were really snow showers and there
was a dusting in some of the NE counties, especially on the higher
elevations. In Jackson County's Bridgeport, 1/4 inch accumulated and a few
bridges temporarily became snow covered.

In Cullman County, Jason Simpson's father reported a dusting on grassy areas
early this morning. They live in Holly Pond on U.S. 78 east of Cullman. I
dare say that no town in the USA, as small as Holly Pond, has produced as
many meteorologists. It's got to be in those famous Cullman County sweet
potatoes. I have a long addiction to sweet potatoes and I, too, am very
interested in weather.

Other flurries were reported as far south as Springville, Clay and
Trussville, but just a few flakes. It will be clearing tonight and we will
have a widespread freeze by morning. Those biting NW winds that reached up
to 30 mph today will diminish. We will have a balancing act tonight on how
much and how soon the wind diminishes. We are looking for an average low of
25 across Central Alabama. It could be closer to 20 in the colder North
Alabama counties depending on the wind.

See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details. You will note that we
are introducing some scattered light rain or maybe even a few snow flurries
late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. No problem.

THE SNOW PATROL: This last storm system dumped a heavy blanket of snow from
the East Tennessee mountains all the way to New England. Schools were closed
in Johnson County in extreme NE Tennessee today. As much as 3-6 inches was
expected to accumulate on the up-slope areas. There was 14 inches on the
ground on Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina and 10 inches on Mt. LeConte in Smoky
Mountain National Park. Skipping toward the NE we find nearly 9 inches in
Boston, 13 inches at Plymouth, Massachusetts and as much as 8 inches in New
York City.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: In the last 24 hours, the coldest was 29 below zero at
both Embarrass, Minnesota and Point Lay, Alaska...1 to 2 feet of snow is on
the ground in NE Minnesota. A whopping 66 inches covers Valdez, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The number of hugs little Miss Molly gets
every day depends a lot on how much coffee I drink. When I go from my
weather office to the kitchen to get another cup, I have to pass just back
of the couch. Molly spends a lot of her time up on the back of the couch
using it as her "community watch" post. Often if she is not there and hears
me coming she will jump up there and expect me to pause and hug her neck. Of
course I do, how could I say no? Biting cold on our early walk today and a
rare quiet walk. Lots of playtime with her yesterday and last
night...building up points with her again...at this moment her toys are all
over the living area...it is a true obstacle course and I have to step
carefully. I don't mind that at all...she has brought such enjoyment to our
lives.

TURNING COLDER: That was a widespread rain across Alabama Sunday. All of
that is mostly gone and now a cold front is moving across the state from
NW to SE. March is known as a windy month. While we're still several hours
away from March, it is still going to be windy tonight and Tuesday as the
colder air spreads over the state. We look for a low tonight in the 30-32
range across Central Alabama, but NW winds (over 20 mph at times) is going
to make that feel a lot colder. There is just enough moisture left in the
air to cause a few overnight snow flurries. No problem at all is expected.

In fact, there is a good chance you won't see any. Most of Tuesday will have
considerable sunshine, but NW winds of 12-25 will make the high in the mid
40s seem quite cold.

We have introduced a chance of some light rain at times on Thursday. This is
not 100 percent certain at this time. We should go back to mostly sunshine
on Friday.

A few examples of rainfall for the last 24 hours:

1.30 inches in Wedowee
1.18 in Alexander City
1.08 in Talladega
1.05 in Selma

THE EASTERN USA SNOW SITUATION: In the Great Smoky Mountains, the total
snow accumulation is expected to be 5-9 inches for tonight through Tuesday.
Winds Tuesday will gust as high as 40 mph with highs only near freezing. It
will drop into the teens tomorrow night, especially in the higher
elevations. Along the Atlantic Seaboard, the Washington-Baltimore area is
expected to receive 3-6 inches before the day is over. In New York, the
total is expected to reach 6-10 inches from later today through tonight.
Boston is looking for 5-10 inches tonight and it could be mixed with
freezing rain after midnight.

MONDAY NOTES: As much as 7.30 inches or rain fell Sunday in Manatee County
Florida. There was 5.17 inches in Sarasota, 4.45 inches in Kissimmee and
3.76 inches in Melbourne...the nation's warm spot was also in South Florida
with 84 at Pembroke Pines...coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 10
below zero at Saranac Lake, New York. The lowest in Alaska was 24 below at
Nuiqsut.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I skipped church last night and spent a lot of
time catching up on playtime with little Miss Molly. She jumped on the bed
last night and hid herself under her blue blanket. She would periodically
pop her head out from under the blanket and grab at me. This went on for a
long time, then a big wrestling session followed by chase ball, pull
rope-you name it...on our early walk today, two new dogs in the community
wanted to meet Molly so bad that they came through the thick underbrush,
jumped over the Old Crow Creek and got acquainted. Molly was in high cotton.
It makes her day if she gets patted on the head by a human or gets to play a
few minute with another doggie. Cats are a different story...life goes on.

...Chilly Weather Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Every square inch of Alabama received rain on Sunday,
thanks to a low pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico. Most rainfall
amounts were moderate, in the three quarters of an inch category, but some
locations over Northwest Alabama saw one to nearly three inches, according
to radar estimates, with a bulls eye over eastern Colbert County. Parts of
Jefferson, Blount, Walker and southern Cullman Counties picked up over an
inch, as did parts of East Central Alabama. The low pressure system is
going crazy along the East Coast this morning and we will experience a windy
day as a result. I had hoped for a little clearing by late in the day, but
it looks like it will have to wait until tonight. In fact, we will still
deal with a good chance of showers and light rain during the day. Skies
should clear tonight, but we could see a few snow flurries...

THE WEATHER WEEK AHEAD: Skies should dawn sunny on Tuesday. But
even though it will be mostly sunny, cold air flowing into the area on brisk
northwest winds will keep readings in the 40s tomorrow. A disturbance to
our west may bring clouds on Wednesday, but good rain chances will hold off
until the weekend, at least. Temperatures will remain below normal for the
better part of the next two weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Huge Mississippi F4 tornado cut a 35-mile
path on a Saturday morning from near Moselle to west of Shubuta. Southeast
of Laurel, the tornado was 1 1/2 miles wide and reached F4 intensity. The
Glade Elementary School was almost completely destroyed, but school luckily
was not in session since it was the weekend. All six deaths occurred in
Glade, and four of those were in one trailer. One man was killed as he ran
to warn a neighbor of the approaching storm. This type of tornado would
have killed 50-100 people before modern warning systems. 350 people were
injured.

WARNINGS DEBATE: I would like to start a little debate over on the
Weather Talk side this morning. It involves the criteria for severe
thunderstorm warnings. Please join in the discussion on the Weather talk
Blog.

...A Dreary Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! Well, I finally jinxed myself. After making it over two years without a cold, I commented on that fact Wednesday and I am now paying for it. Oh well. It will be great weather for being sick and staying in today with a dreary, chilly rain setting in along with a raw east wind. I’ll enjoy it from the couch.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: At the jet stream level, we find a big split flow around a cyclonic circulation over the West. The southern branch of the jet stream carries a moist flow from the Pacific across Old Mexico and over the South. At the surface, we find a convoluted pattern of low pressure systems across the U.S. The first is located over Minnesota, with a trailing cold front that is the leading edge of some very cold air over Canada. Another minor low pressure system is located over the Oklahoma Panhandle. The most important in our weather is a low over the northern Gulf of Mexico. Another important factor is high pressure over the Northeast. This is causing an easterly wind to flow down the east side of the Appalachians. Relatively warm and moist air flowing up and over the airmass over Alabama is causing rain to form over the area this morning. This situation will continue through tonight before the low moves into the Florida Big Bend area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Showers will end before lunch on Monday and colder air will spill into the area. Dry and cool conditions should remain over the area through Thursday. A disturbance will bring showers back to the area on Friday or Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1717: The Great Snow of 1717. Perhaps the greatest snowstorm in New England History. Actually a series of four snowstorms until March 7 that dumped up to five feet of snow on parts of New England. 95 percent of New England’s deer population was wiped out. The four-day storm dumped three feet of snow on Boston. The city was snowbound for two weeks. Up to six feet of snow was reported north of Boston. Many one-story homes were completely covered by snowdrifts.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Blue skies greeted the day across the area early this morning. A layer of high cirrus clouds overspread the sky during the morning hours. This layer of clouds has served to dim the sun a bit, but temperatures had already risen to near 60 degrees across North Central Alabama. The clouds are courtesy of a split flow in the upper level jet pattern over North America. The northern stream rides across the Pacific Northwest and across southern Canada before dipping over the Great Lakes.

The southern stream dives over the Pacific, picking up lots of moisture before crossing Old Mexico and running over the southern states.

RAIN TO RETURN: Low pressure is forming over the western Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. By tomorrow morning, this low will be located about 150 miles south of Mobile. Showers will overspread parts of South Alabama overnight tonight and will spread further north during the day on Sunday.

The models are diverging at this point, with the GFS carrying the primary low further east toward the Florida Big Bend, keeping most of the rain to our east and southeast. It then develops a secondary low and moves it across Northwest Alabama on Monday. In either case, we will experience rain Sunday and Sunday night, and some leftover showers on Monday.

The northern branch of the jet stream will kink into a huge trough over the eastern U.S. early in the week. This will allow cold air to spill into the state. Temperatures may have a hard time reaching 50 degrees on Monday across northern parts of the state, and most areas will see readings below freezing Monday night.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will be dry, breezy and cool. A disturbance will pass to our west Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. The atmosphere might be cold enough for the precipitation to come in the form of a few snow flurries over North Alabama Tuesday night, but this precipitation does not look significant. Another low will slide by over the weekend, bringing another chance of showers, but they should be liquid not frozen, we think.

It still appears that we will be in a very cold pattern through much of the next two weeks over the eastern half of the country.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: 7.22 inches of rain fell on Hilo HI, setting a record. The heavy rains were the result of a Kona Low over the islands. Kona Lows are subtropical cyclones that form over the North Pacific during the cool season. They are one of the least understood weather phenomena that affect the island paradise, bringing high winds, heavy rains and flash flooding. Southwesterly winds around the Kona Low converged with the usual easterly trade winds and forced moist air up over the mountains on the east side of the Big Island, causing the heavy rains. Between December 2001 and the end of February Hilo had picked up nearly 60 inches of rain, compared to a normal of 28.35 inches. Meanwhile, on Oahu, Honolulu was reporting lower than normal rains during the same period, as northeasterly winds around the Kona Low descend down the mountains toward Honolulu, drying the air. Honolulu had only picked up 5.36 inches during the same period.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It's here. The sound of a ball hitting leather.
The crack of the bat. Beautifully manicured baseball diamonds. The
optimism of a new year. Everyone starts out in first place. Who will be
this year's sleepers? Which team will improve the most? Spring training
started this week in Arizona and Florida. I am very excited to be getting
the chance to attend the Yankees and Pirates game in Bradenton, Florida on
Friday.

OUR WEATHER: Well, it won't feel like Spring here in Alabama
anytime soon. In fact, it is going to feel rather un-Springlike over the
next several days. Today, most of the area has experienced a cold rain,
thanks to low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico. The heaviest rain has been
over Southeast Alabama. This rain will continue tonight, gradually
diminishing during the overnight hours. Our winds will shift around to the
west overnight as the low slides to our southeast.

A little light rain will remain over the area tomorrow morning.
Colder air will begin to flow into Alabama during the day, with temperatures
struggling to reach 50 in most areas. Skies should clear Monday night, with
readings dropping to near or just below freezing. Tuesday will be another
cool day, with an occasionally biting north wind. Skies will be partly
cloudy with a mix of some sun and wraparound stratocumulus clouds from a
complex low pressure system that will be strengthening over New England and
the Ohio Valley. Daytime highs on Tuesday will only make the upper 40s..

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Strong cold air advection will continue on
Wednesday, and daytime temperatures will only be in the 40s. A disturbance
sliding to our west may bring back some clouds, but current indications are
that we will remain dry. High pressure will be very close to Alabama
Wednesday night, and we should see the coldest temperatures of this week
with excellent radiational cooling conditions in place. Low pressure will
develop over the Gulf by Thursday, but should remain far enough to our south
to preclude us feeling much in the way of effects. At the same time, a
trough of low pressure at the surface will be developing between the
sprawling high to our east and high pressure over the West. The GFS model
hints at showers moving back into the area late on Friday, lasting into
Saturday morning, but precipitation from this system is expected to be
light.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: A record snowstorm in Maine was coming to an
end. Two to four feet of snow fell across southern and central Maine. The
fifty seven inches of snow at West Forks set a state record. Pinkham
Notch, NH was buried under seventy seven inches of snow. Many single story
houses were completely covered with drifts. Roofs on many buildings
collapsed under the extreme weight of the snowfall. Over two feet of snow
fell across northeastern Vermont and Northeastern Massachusetts. 97.8
inches of snow fell at Mount Washington during the period from the 24th
through the 28th, a record for New England. Portland, ME and Portsmouth, NH
both set their single storm snowfall records with 26.9 inches and 33.8
inches respectively.
