..Strong Storms Tomorrow...

Boy, it felt good today just to roll the windows down in the car, turn
on the Phillies and Blue Jays on the radio and just enjoy summer. We
are such an air conditioned society now, that we often miss the
opportunity to just kick back and feel the warmth, hear the sounds and
take in the smells of a glorious Alabama day. The smell of freshly
cut grass, or the barbecue joint. Reminded me of being a kid so long
ago.

ISOLATED STORMS THIS AFTERNOON: Radars were clear early this
afternoon across Central Alabama, but there could be a few isolated
storms through early evening from the Tennessee Valley down into
eastern Alabama. A few lucky spots could pick up brief heavy rain,
but look out for the lightning. We are getting into peak lightning
season in Alabama.

THE SUMMER TRIANGLE: No, that's not the name of a new summer
romantic comedy. You guys know how much that I love Jack Horkheimer's
Star Gazer astronomy
show. It can be seen on the web at www.jackstargazer.com. This week,
he covered the triangle of stars that you can see that rises in the
east around 9-10 p.m. There are the stars of summer, Vega, Altair and
Denib.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A rare frontal boundary will approach Alabama from
the north on Sunday, perhaps sparking thunderstorms during the
afternoon and into the overnight. They will have plenty of warm,
moist air to feed on, but the forcing is not exceptionally strong.
Still, let's be wary tomorrow for the potential for strong storms,
Again, lightning will be a problem with any storms that do form.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Some drier air will settle down into Central Alabama
on Monday. There could be storms to the south and east of Birmingham
on Monday and over South Alabama on Tuesday. Temperatures will trend
back to seasonal averages for the latter half of June in Alabama. We
will record quite a few lows in the 60s next week, which will be
refreshing. WE will be keeping an eye on a disturbance in drifting up
into the southern Gulf that could become Tropical Storm Ana as it
heads toward the West Coast of Florida early in the week.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Spectacular images of mammatus clouds over
Manhattan last evening as strong storms moved through New York City.
The pouch like clouds form in pockets of sinking air on the bottom of
thunderstorm anvils. It has been a stormy spring and early summer in
the corridor between New York and Washington, especially in the D.C.
area. Tornadoes also occurred last evening over northeastern North
Dakota. The launch of the NOAA GOES-O satellite aboard a Delta 4
rocket was srubbed last night because of weather at Cape Canaveral.
Forecast doesn't look good for this evening either.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Virginia experienced its worst flooding since
Hurricane Camille as stationary thunderstorms falling on saturated
soil caused intense big problems. In Madison County, up to twenty
inches of rain fell in a twelve hour period. Ten inches of rain fell
in two hours at one location. An early morning storm developed
southward across the Virginia Piedmont and was followed by a storm
that remained basically stationary for eight hours as a result of
persistent upslope flow. The flash flood turned into a river flood as
all of the heavy rain ran off into the Rapidan and Rappahannock
Rivers. The resulting flooding was determined to be a 500 year
event. Three people died and twenty were injured in the flooding.
Property damage totaled $80 million and agricultural losses were
tabulated at $100 million.

...Another Hot One...

It was hot across Central Alabama on Friday, much like the past
several days. Today will mark the thirteenth straight day on 90
degrees readings in the Magic City. That's not too unusual. After
all it is summer in the Magic City. It is supposed to be hot.
Readings for the month are running some 2.8 degrees above average.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: It will be another mostly sunny and hot day today
with high temperatures in the middle and upper 90s. There is a very
small chance that we could see an isolated storm or two this
afternoon, but they will be few and far between. Air quality today
will be in the yellow, or moderate category.

STORMS TOMORROW: A frontal system will approach from the north on
Sunday, triggering widely scattered thunderstorms. Some of these
storms could be strong during the afternoon and into the overnight.
Highs will be in the 90s again.

HEAT BACKS OFF: After Sunday, the heat may back off a bit as the
front moves southward. It may still triggers storms on Monday, mainly
in areas south and east of Birmingham. Seasonal conditions minus the
typical afternoon and evening storms will prevail through midweek.
Mornings may actually feel a little comfortable, with lows in the
60s. Highs will be in the upper 80s to around 90.

FOURTH FORECAST: Next Saturday is Independence Day. There are signs
that an approaching front may trigger scattered storms on the
Fourth. Temperatures should be near normal, with highs in the upper
80s to near 90. Lows will be right around 70.

GETTING INTERESTING IN THE TROPICS: Thunderstorm activity with a
tropical wave over the western Caribbean decreased last night after an
afternoon flare up. There is some chance for development of this
system as it moves northwestward toward the Yucatan and eventually the
southern Gulf of Mexico. There is a chance that it will develop into
a tropical storm or hurricane early in the week. It will most likely
move toward the west coast of Florida, although it could meander
before turning toward the Texas or Mexican coast. It would be named
Ana.

JUNE TOO SOON? June 1957's Hurricane Audrey is the ninth deadliest
U.S. landfalling hurricane according to official National Hurricane
Center records, but if you counted the 190 people that were never
found, it would be seventh. Audrey was a category four storm, which
proves that June hurricanes must be taken seriously. More in today's
editions of the AlabamaWx.com blog.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Fritch, Texas was struck by a devastating F4
tornado which did over $35 million in damage. It actually may have
been two tornadoes. Seven people were injured. Some of the most
dramatic tornado video footage ever recorded was shot by a resident of
Fritch who was able to keep the camera rolling until the twister was
right on top of him. He was actually stunned by a nearby lightning
flash, but continued to video even as the tornado destroyed mobile
homes just across the street. He had to stop shooting the video when
the tornado began o tear apart his own house.

===================================================================

..A Hot Weekend...

HEAT RELIEF STARTS MONDAY: Do not look for the old sweat index to
drop much, at least for two more days. In fact, the humidity that gave
us a slight break the last two days is going back up again. We look
for highs again tomorrow across Central Alabama in the mid 90s and
nearly that high on Sunday. Lows at night will be in the mid 70s,
which is not exactly comfortable.

THE RAIN SITUATION: The surplus for 2009 at Birmingham Airport has
dwindled to 1.24 inches, so we are still in fairly good shape. The
stage at Lake Purdy was 550.4 feet, only one-half foot below full
pool. There could be an isolated thunderstorm this evening and again
Saturday afternoon and evening. We believe those will increase some
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night and probably a better chance on
Monday.
Why the increase? It appears that another front will be moving down
into Alabama from the north on Monday. We will be out in the streets
cheering it on. The front, like the others recently, will stop for a
two or three day rest down south. Bottom line: we can expect some heat
relief early in the week, although not really dramatic. We are calling
for a high of 88 on Monday, partially because of the increased clouds
and showers. We also look for upper 80s Tuesday, but noticeably lower
humidity. We believe low
temperatures will be between 63 and 65 Tuesday morning through about
Thursday morning.

MID ALABAMA STORMS: Some of those were forming this afternoon in
almost the same spot as they did yesterday right across the
geographical center of Alabama. Today the Storm Prediction Center
thinks that a few of those storms, when they finally give up the ghost
and collapse, could produce a wet microburst. They do not believe it
is significant for a severe thunderstorm watch.

SALT LAKE CITY: They have received measurable rain on 17 days so far
this month, which ties a record set in 1967. The airport has received
2.40 inches of rain so far. The record for all of June is 3.84 in
1998. While we are talking Utah, it is estimated that two-thirds of
the wildfires in Utah and the Eastern Great Basin are caused by
lightning. While we mention lightning, let us remind once again that
Lightning Awareness Week continues through Saturday with a motto of:
When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. You should stay aware the rest of your
lifeā€”not just for this week. I will do a longer BLOG story on
lightning early next week. I have had several close calls.

SEVERE WEATHER: Widespread problems this afternoon through the
central part of the country all the way to New England. The SPC has a
Slight Risk area this afternoon and tonight as far south as Kentucky
and Tennessee.

GLOBAL ROAMING: If you are really cold natured, you need to be in New
Delhi where the low tonight will be 90 and the high tomorrow 114.
Baghdad expects 80 tonight and a blistering 119 tomorrow. The heat in
the Upper Midwest has caused a number of concrete roads in Wisconsin
to buckle. Just to cool you off, earlier today visibility was only ¼
mile and snow on Wolf Creek Pass in Southern Colorado. I had a scary
close call in near blizzard conditions late one night in that location.

AT THE BEACH: Plenty hot for the weekend, even right along the coast
where highs will be between 92 and 95. Very few thunderstorms until
Monday, when they increase in number. The Tropics are mostly quiet,
but there is a tropical wave over the Western Caribbean. It is
expected to move westward into the Yucatan Peninsula before
significant development occurs.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly smells so good. She is
always so happy to get back home after a day at the beauty shop. When
we got within two blocks of home yesterday, she recognized the terrain
and she stood at full attention, with her tail wagging, in the front
seat of the car knowing she would soon be home. The more I am around
Molly, I continue to be amazed at how much that little girl knows. I
wish there were some way to test a the IQ of a dog. I feel sure Molly
has a higher IQ than me. Life goes on.

...Storms Increase By Sunday...

HOT HAZY SUMMER DAYS: The weather across Alabama won't change much
today and tomorrow. Hot and hazy conditions, a partly sunny sky, and
the risk of a brief pop-up afternoon shower or thunderstorm. The
chance of any one spot getting wet today and tomorrow is about one in
five, and the best chance of showers will come during the peak of the
afternoon heating process, between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. Very routine
summer weather for our state.

SUNDAY AND MONDAY: We do expect an increase in the number of showers
and storms on these two days in response to an upper trough forming
over the eastern third of the nation, and an approaching surface
front. And, as the rain chances go up on these days, the heat levels
will come down. Highs will drop into the mid 80s on Monday because of
clouds and showers.
Drier and slightly cooler air will follow the showers Monday night,
and at this point the weather for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week
looks dry with sunny days and clear pleasant nights. Humidity values
will be low as well.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: We are forecasting about 7 to 9 hours of
sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with just a few widely scattered showers
and storms. Highs along the
immediate coast will be close to 90, with mid to upper 90s once you
get a mile or so north of the beach. The sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 86 degrees. No sign of any
tropical storm trouble over the next few days, but scattered showers
and storms should increase along the coast by Monday with a surface
front approaching from the north. Still, no all-day kind of rain.

OZONE ALERT: Another code orange ozone alert is in effect today for
Jefferson and Shelby Counties.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: Residents of Cameron LA went to bed believing
that they had plenty of time to evacuate the following morning in
advance of what was then a Category Two Hurricane Audrey. Official
bulletins from the U.S. Weather Bureau stated that the storm would not
come ashore until late the next day. They would be very surprised the
next morning to find water covering much of their parish as a twelve
foot storm surge was already impacting the area and the center was
just offshore. Also, Audrey had intensified rapidly during the night,
with the central pressure dropping 35 mb from the last reconnaissance
fix during the day. Winds correspondingly increased to 145 mph and the
storm surge rose from an expected 5-8 feet to a devastating 12 feet or
higher. Additionally, the forward movement of the hurricane increased
from 6 mph to 15 mph, and residents were told that the hurricane would
not strike until the following afternoon. 390 people would die and
another 192 would never be found.

..Hot and Mostly Dry...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story about some cooler than average
temperatures over the north and central portions this morning. Credit
that to clear skies, light winds and lower dew points.

It is also a story of very little relief from heat and
humidity down south where the dew points did not change much. The
temperature by early this afternoon was already in the mid 90s at
Montgomery.

A few storms were developing across Central Alabama this
afternoon. Actually, they will be scarce for the remainder of this
afternoon and evening down south and there will be few if any over the
north half of the state.

Upper air soundings showed extremely dry air over our
area aloft today. Also, the winds aloft were tame as compared to most
days. The wind profile indicated that
any storms that formed will move toward the SSW rather slowly.

WHAT WE EXPECT: There should be a gradual heating up on
the old thermometer and we will get back in the mid 90s Friday and
Saturday with only an isolated shower or thunderstorm. We look for a
slight increase on Sunday and an even better chance of showers and
thunderstorms on Monday.

ANOTHER FRONT IN OUR FUTURE: Sure looks that way,
but we are getting in the time of year where fronts will be quite
scarce there are indications that a front (and actually supporting
some cooler temperatures) will reach Central Alabama on Monday and
come to a halt in South Alabama Tuesday and Wednesday. This will cause
the increase in showers and thunderstorms later Sunday and especially
on Monday. By the middle of next week, morning temperatures will be
around 66 and highs on Monday and Tuesday in the mid 80s.

OUR PLEASANT EARLY MORNING: Not only was the
humidity lower, but we had some pleasant early morning temperatures as
low as the upper 50s in some of the North Alabama valleys. A few other
lows: 61 in Fort Payne, 63 at Russell Cave, 64 at Decatur and Cullman,
Decatur and Pinson.

THE GREAT BIG APPLE: Well, we sometimes refer to
that as New York City. While much of the rest of the country has
fought heat and dryness, they have had
much rain and cooler temperatures. June, so far, has averaged over 4
degrees below average and the high for the entire month only 82. They
have had 16 days with measurable rain, including 8 in a row. Their
total for the month was 8.65 and excess of 5.60 inches.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The Tropics are quiet including
the entire Atlantic Basin and the Eastern Pacific. The SPC has a
Slight Risk of severe weather this afternoon and tonight from
Missouri, Illinois and Ohio into Pennsylvania and much of New York. It
was 104 in Houston yesterday. They need rain badly. Not a single drop
has fallen in June at Hobdy Airport. 117 in Death Valley yesterday and
36 this morning in Yellowstone National Park.

IGHTNING AWARENESS WEEK: It continues and with the
motto: When The Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. Once lightning enters the
building it can
travel through electrical and phone lines, plumbing, radio and TV
reception systems. Phone use is the main cause of indoor lightning
injuries.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is
at the PBS (the Puppy Beauty Shop) all day today getting a haircut.
She will come home late this afternoon with a little ribbon in her
hair smelling as nice as a young lady on the way to a high school
prom. Naturally, she started shaking as soon as we got in the car, but
brightened up when she saw her PBS. I am going to catch up on our
ballgames tonight and tomorrow, so much so, that she will think she is
in the doggie World Series. My tongue will probably hanging out also,
but it is lots of fun. Life goes on.

...Typical Summer Weather...

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME: Very routine summer weather is likely for
Alabama through the weekend. Each day, we will see a good supply of
hazy sunshine with scattered cumulus clouds; some of those clouds will
grow into showers and thunderstorms, but the rain be scattered, and
mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. The chance of any one
spot getting wet this afternoon is only about one in eight, and highs
will be mostly in the low to mid 90s. The dewpoints remain lower over
North Alabama, so humidity levels won't too oppressive over the
northern half of our state.

The weather won't change too much over the weekend, with partly sunny
days and some risk of widely scattered showers and storms both
Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the low 90s. But, next week, the
forecast is trending a bit cooler with better chances of showers and
thunderstorms around here as the heat ridge continues to move west,
and a strong upper low forms to the north of Alabama. It looks like
highs will be in the upper 80s with scattered to numerous showers and
storms for at least the first half of the week.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 8 to 10 hours of sunshine each day through
Sunday with some risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Along
the immediate coast, the high will be close to 90, with mid to upper
90s likely for inland areas. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab last night was 86 degrees. And, no sign of any tropical
weather problems for the rest of June.

OZONE ALERT: A code orange air quality alert is in effect today for
the Birmingham metro area (Jefferson and Shelby Counties) due to the
possibility of elevated levels of ground level ozone, which can be
problematic for those with asthma and other respiratory problems.

LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK: In the words of the great American
weather legend J.B. Elliott, "lightning is frightening". Storms on a
summer afternoon in Alabama can pack hundreds of ground strokes, and
we must respect the lightning generated by these, and all
thunderstorms in our state. The best rule is this: simply go inside
the first time your hear thunder, and wait 30 minutes until the
thunder has ended before going back outside. It doesn't have to be
raining to be hit by lightning; ground strokes can develop well ahead
of the rain shaft, below the storm anvil. One third of lightning
deaths are related to water activities, so be sure you allow yourself
plenty of time to get back to shore if you are boating.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: At noon, the tropical depression in the
southwest Gulf of Mexico was upgraded to a hurricane and christened
Audrey. Air Force reconnaissance investigating Hurricane Audrey over
the southwest Gulf of Mexico found a central pressure of 973 mb.
Audrey would eventually achieve Category 4 status before devastating
the Cameron LA area on the 27th.

...No Real Break From The Heat...

HUMIDITY A BIT LOWER: You could walk outside anywhere in North and
Central Alabama this afternoon and for a change it was not like
walking into a sauna bath. For sure, we do not have desert-type
humidity around here this afternoon, but the dew points were lower
giving us at least a partial break from the heat even though the
temperatures were above 90 in most locations. An example is Huntsville
where the temperature was 92 early this afternoon, but the dew point
was 60 giving a heat index 1 degree lower than the actual temperature.
Making it a bit more pleasant was a NE wind
gusting to 24 mph.

Down south the dew points were in the low 70s with temperatures well
into the 90s. Some thunderstorms were developing in the more humid air
over the south part of the state as well as NW Florida. Those storms
were moving toward the SSW. We cannot rule out a few further north
this afternoon and evening, but the best chance will be down south. In
fact, the Storm Prediction Center as a Slight Risk of severe weather
posted near the Gulf Coast from NW Florida over to Louisiana.

REST OF THE WEEK: Temperatures and humidity both will be creeping
back upward from Friday through the weekend. There will be some widely
spaced showers and thunderstorms almost every afternoon. We are
looking at some interesting developments for early next week. There
are indications that another front will reach Central Alabama by
Tuesday morning. That should give us a better chance of some showers
and thunderstorms, mainly on Monday. That is not sealed in concrete
yet, but we are hopeful. A lot of people are requesting rain. Check
our Day-by-Day Forecast for all the details.

MONTGOMERY: Our State Capitol has averaged nearly 3 degrees hotter
than average so far this month. Yesterday was the 19th day in a row
with highs in the 90s. In fact, 7 of the last 8 days have sported high
temperatures in the upper 90s, mostly 98 and 99. June rain amounts so
far of 1.75 inches is a shortage of 1.30.

LIGHTNING AWARENESS: All this week is Lightning Awareness Week. The
NWS chose the motto: When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. Lightning can be
devastating and often people that are struck and survive have livelong
problems. A brief example: on June 24, 1924, 6 men were working in a
quarry in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. When a thunderstorm
threatened, they sought shelter in a dynamite shed. Lightning struck
causing the dynamite to explode killing all 6 of the men.

SEVERE WEATHER: Not only is the Central Gulf Coast under a Slight
Risk this afternoon and evening, but there is a large part of the
Central and Northern Plains and Upper Midwest also under a risk.
Tomorrow, the Slight Risk will extend from Missouri to New York State
and northward to include DesMoines, Chicago and Detroit.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The pesky little low-pressure area that was over
the West Gulf of Mexico, moved inland into NE Mexico. What was once
Hurricane Andres over in the East Pacific has diminished to a tropical
depression near the south tip of Baja, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Up at my usual 5:00 this morning. Little
Miss Molly saw me tippy-toeing and getting dressed. She pulled herself
all the way across the king-size bed on her belly for me to give her a
rubdown. We immediately went for a walk. As far as I know, she and I
were the only people awake this side of China. I have received some
well deserved semi objections to not giving Molly more ballgames. I
promise to correct that immediately even if I have to skip coffee. She
does not ask too much. I can read Molly like a book and she can do the
same to me. Those little bright eyes are a powerful tool and I try to
avoid too much contact. Her tail has wagged zillions of times since we
got her. Life goes on.

...Still Hot; A Few Storms...

LOOKING FOR COOLING SHOWERS: After the heat of recent days, I think
most folks wouldn't mind a cooling shower or thunderstorm during the
afternoon heat. We will have that chance on a daily basis for the next
five to seven days as the core of the heat ridge remains a little west
of our state. But, they will be widely spaced, with the chance of any
one spot getting wet this afternoon only about one in five. Otherwise,
the weather stays hot with afternoon highs in the 91 to 95 degree
range. The good news is that lower dewpoints moved into North Alabama
yesterday, meaning humidity values will be lower around here.

We just see too much change in this pattern through the weekend and
into early next week; hot with some risk of a passing shower or storm
from time to time, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. We
also note a northerly flow aloft will continue, meaning the door is
open for a few organized storm areas moving our way from Kentucky and
Tennessee. There is little skill in forecasting these until we
actually see them forming on radar. Highs will stay mostly in the low
90s.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny warm days and fair nights are expected
through the weekend with just a few widely scattered shower and
storms. At our SKYCAM site at the Phoenix All-Suites, right on the
beach in Gulf Shores, the high yesterday was 93 degrees, but just
three miles inland, north of intracoastal waterway, the Jack Edwards
Airport at Gulf Shores soared to 101 degrees. The high at Mobile was
also 101 degrees; an offshore, northerly flow was one of the reasons
for the big heat down south. Highs on the immediate coast for the rest
of the week and this weekend will be around 90, with mid 90s inland.

BIG TIME HEAT: The high reported at Dothan yesterday was 105 degrees,
only 8 degrees cooler than Death Valley, California, where the high
was 113 (the nation's hottest place yesterday). We have questioned the
accuracy of the temperature data in recent days in Dothan, but with
other triple digit readings over South Alabama and Southwest Georgia,
it might not be too far off.

HOW TO COOL OFF QUICKLY: At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon it was a
very sultry 101 in Pensacola. At 5 p.m., a thunderstorm had moved in
from the north and they were reporting 79 degrees and heavy rain. It
was 78 at 6 p.m. with the rain continuing; they got 1.11 inches of
rain in only one hour between 6 and 7 p.m.. Total from the storm late
this afternoon was 1.49 inches. A thunderstorm late yesterday
afternoon at Evergreen quickly lowered the temperature from near 100
to a cool 73 at 6 p.m.!

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 crashes at JFK
airport in New York City. . 113 of the 124 people on board the
aircraft died. Researcher Theodore Fujita studies the incident and
discovers that the crash was caused by a microburst. His research
leads to improved air safety. The tower never experienced the
microburst, which was held back by a seabreeze front.

..Not Quite As Hot...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It does not feel like it, but we had a weak front
pushing from NE toward the SW across Alabama this afternoon. You will
not really notice it except our dew point should drop some Wednesday
and will not feel quite so awfully humid. The heat may back off just a
bit over the next few days. Even so, the stubborn thermometer will
insist on reaching the low to mid 90s in the afternoon.

With this type of weather pattern, we are going to see at least a few
thunderstorms pop up every day, mainly during the afternoon. Those
storms will probably be moving from north to south. These often
produce a lot of lightning

The Storm Prediction Center does not have any part of Alabama under
even a slight risk of severe weather today or tomorrow. However, we
should explain that in the heat of the afternoon we can always have a
few thunderstorms that briefly become severe. The Storm Prediction
Center does not usually issue a slight risk for those type storms.

The temperature reached 100 in Mobile yesterday afternoon. By early
this afternoon, the temperature had reached 101 at the Jack Edwards
Airport in Gulf Shores right along the beach.

TUSCALOOSA: Today is the ninth day in a row that the Tuscaloosa
temperature has reached 93 or higher. In the last 23 days counting
today, 15 days have reached the 90s. In Montgomery, 17 days out of the
last 23 had 90s. There has been no measurable rain in Tuscaloosa for
the last 9 days.

SEVERE WEATHER: SPC has a Slight Risk this afternoon and tonight in
Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas and also the western part of
the Florida Peninsula.
Tomorrow, only Nebraska and Iowa are included in the Slight Risk.

TROPICAL WEATHER: That weak low-pressure area persists over the SW
Gulf of Mexico, which should move slowly NW without significant
development. Over on the other side of Mexico, Tropical Storm Andres
was near the west coast of Mexico with winds almost hurricane force.
It will gradually curve more NW passing very near the south tip of
Baja, California before heading out to sea.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Houston has received no measurable rain this month.
They are very hot and dry. 24 degreesā€”a hard freezeā€”was the coldest in
the lower 48 this
morning at Stanley, Idaho. 94 was the high in Minneapolis yesterday as
the heat begins to spread further north. Oklahoma City was forecasting
100 for this afternoon and again tomorrow with similar numbers for
Dallas/Ft. Worth and Austin. Chicago should have 93 tomorrow, as the
Windy City finally heats up.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This is unheard of, but my Little Miss
Molly slept over 10 hours last night. She was so tired and a bit
nervous trying to avoid all the noise and the little babies here this
week. I did not get a chance to have a ballgame with her for the last
two days. On my way to the kitchen this morning to get my fourth cup
of coffee, she gently kicked one of her balls in front of me, but I
did not have time to stop. Life goes on.

...A Few Storms Possible This Afternoon...

WATCHING FOR SOME RAIN: We could actually use a good shower or
thunderstorm around here since we have been dry for the last week or
so, and it will give a little temporary heat relief. As the core of
the upper air ridge that has been over Alabama drifts slowly to the
west, we believe that will open the door for a few scattered showers
and storms this afternoon and into the evening hours. The most
numerous showers and storms should be along and east of I-65, and the
chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in four. Away from the
scattered showers, the day will be hot and humid with afternoon highs
mostly in the 91 to 95 degree range. Like the past several days, the
afternoon heat index will hover around 100 degrees due to the high
humidity levels associated with the maritime tropical air.

THE DAYS AHEAD: Not much change is expected in the overall pattern
through the rest of the week and the weekend; partly sunny, hot and
humid days with some risk of a passing shower or storm in scattered
spots. Highs will be mostly in the low 90s, with lows in the low 70s.
With the core of the upper ridge to the west of Alabama, that will
also leave us in a northerly flow aloft, meaning there will also be
some risk of organized storm areas to the north dropping southward
into the state. There is very little skill in forecasting those until
we actually see them forming on radar over Kentucky or Tennessee.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A disturbed area of weather persists over the
Southwest Gulf of Mexico; it is drifting northwest toward the Mexican
coast, and it most likely won't have time to develop into a tropical
depression before it moves inland. Over in the eastern Pacific,
Tropical Storm Andres is forecast to become a hurricane for a brief
time today near the coast of Mexico; it will turn to the west late
tonight and tomorrow, and then weaken over cooler ocean water as it
moves away from Mexico.

SOUTH ALABAMA HEAT: Birmingham's official high yesterday was 94
degrees, only about five degrees above average for June 22. The most
intense heat remains over the southern part of the state; yesterday's
high in Mobile was 100 degrees, and the official reporting site at
Dothan checked in with 104. Even our SKYCAM at Gulf Shores reported 93
degrees thanks to an offshore flow. Normally, southerly winds along
the immediate coast tend to keep air temperatures near the sea water
temperatures, which are now in the upper 80s. One death in Southeast
Alabama has been blamed on the heat; according to the Houston county
coroner, 61-year old Gail Nash Moeur died after her core body
temperature rose to 108 degrees. She was found lying on the floor of
her Dothan hotel room early Sunday morning. She was later pronounced
dead at a local hospital.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: The all time record South Pole Weather Station
low of -117 degrees was recorded. This is not the record low for the
Antarctic Continent. It was -128.6 degrees, set on July 21, 1983.

..Subtle Changes...

HEAT TO BACK OFF A BIT: Mind you, it is not one of those big nice
cool fronts that will push in here and rescue us from temperatures way
too hot. When we have a ridge aloft that develops over us during the
summer, it tends to get hotter. There are now indications that the
ridge will be shifting toward the west. It is expected to be centered
over Arkansas and Oklahoma by midweek and even as far west as Dallas/
Ft. Worth Wednesday or Thursday. This will permit our high
temperatures to back off a bit. It will also open the door for some of
those thunderstorms around the so-called ring of fire to move more
southward. We will be watching for those almost every day for the rest
of the week.

At this time, we do not foresee a widespread drenching for Alabama. We
could see a few isolated storms later today over near the Georgia
border. We believe again tomorrow that any chance of a thunderstorm
will mainly be on the east side of the state. For Wednesday on through
Friday other section so Alabama could see a few thunderstorms, but
still not a widespread soaking.

The upper air pattern indicates that by Tuesday or Wednesday,
thunderstorms that formed in places like Illinois, Indiana and
Kentucky could move almost due south.
Still plenty hot this afternoon as temperatures climb well into the
90s and the heat index well over 100. We are calling for high
temperatures to back off to the lower 90s Thursday and Friday. Nights
will also be a bit cooler.

SUNDAY HEAT: Every corner of Alabama had highs in the 90s again
yesterday. The hotter temperatures were down south with 99 in Mobile,
98 in Montgomery and Geneva, 102 in Tallahassee, and 103 in Dothan. We
are not too sure about that Dothan temperature.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A bit of action today over the SW Gulf of Mexico as
a weak surface system developed. It should move slowly WNW. Additional
development should be slow. The NHC says only about a 1 in 3 chance of
it becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours. Over on the
other side of Mexico, the first named storm of the season in the
Eastern Pacific (Andres) was sporting 60 mph winds and may become a
hurricane Tuesday. He will be moving NW skirting the Mexican coast and
curving more west just south of the tip of Baja, California.

LIGHTNING AWARENESS: This is Lightning Awareness Week. The NWS motto
is: When The Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. Lightning can often bring
tragedy to animals and humans. Jeri Martin in Talladega owned horses
for 13 years. About 5 years ago, both of her horses seeking shelter
under a tree during a thunderstorm were struck and killed instantly.
Jeri says she still misses them terribly.

GLOBAL WARMING: It was 107 in Bullhead City, Arizona Sunday. That is
one of those small towns along the lower Colorado River that does not
being mentioned like that because it give them national publicity.
Lows this morning included 27 at Bryce Canyon, Utah and 30 at Barrow,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our great grandkids from Russellville
are with us this week. Little Miss Molly loves them dearly, but she
spends much of her time staying out of the way and moving around. Last
night she was so tired when we took her to bed that she did not awaken
until 9:00. She sure did welcome Bill and Sally Murray Sunday when
they came by to deliver some sausage balls for me for Fathers Day.
Sally makes the best ones. I believe Little Miss Molly would have gone
home with them. She greets everyone like they are her lifetime
friends. Life goes on, although it can get very hectic at times,
especially for Molly.

...Lightning Safety Awareness Week...

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! That is the slogan of this year's
Lightning Safety Awareness Week across the country. A total of 28
people died from lightning strikes in 2008 in the U.S., and we have
already had 15 people killed by lightning. Lightning is a very
serious threat to life and property, and Alabama ranks number seven in
lightning fatalities over the past twenty years or so. Take time to
learn about lightning risks and how to protect yourself and your family.

HOT WEATHER TO CONTINUE: The big ridge of high pressure that has
produced our very hot weather will edge a tad back to the west over
the next twenty four hours. This will put Georgia and eastern Alabama
on the eastern periphery of the high. With northerly winds aloft, a
few thunderstorms may clip East Alabama tonight and Tuesday. By
Wednesday and Thursday, the ridge will build back over Alabama,
putting the clamps on anything but isolated storm development.
Temperatures will continue on the hot side, with highs in the middle
90s mostly. Lows will be muggy, in the lower and middle 70s.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: By Friday, an upper trough will start
forming over the eastern United States. This may weaken the hold that
the upper high has on our weather, allowing widely scattered afternoon
and evening thunderstorms to return o the menu. This will allow
temperatures to edge just back just a bit, to right around
climatalogical averages for late June.

VOODOOLAND: By next weekend, the ridge over Alabama will weaken and
the subtropical ridge over the Atlantic will move east. This should
set the stage for a dramatic increase in moisture and some decent
precipitation. We will have to wait and see.

TONIGHT'S GUEST ON WEATHERBRAINS: Craig Mattox from the Southeastern
Conference will be our special guest tonight. Craig will discuss the
tornado that hit the Georgia Dome during an SEC Basketball Tournament
Game. He will talk about severe weather and game management. Should
be an interesting show. It will be available on
www.WeatherBrains.com, as well as iTunes by late this evening.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: The remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused
tremendous rains of 10-20 inches across Maryland, Virginia, New York
and Pennsylvania. Tremendous flooding occurred in Pennsylvania. By
late evening, Civil Defense officials in Wilkes-Baare watched the
rapidly rising floodwaters of the Susquehanna River. Evacuation
warnings were not sounded during the night because emergency officials
thought that a nighttime evacuation would be confusing. By early
morning, evacuations were ordered with the river at 33 feet and major
flooding already occurring. By late morning, warnings were frantic as
the area's worst natural disaster in history was underway. At 11:14
am, sirens sounded seven short blasts indicating that the waters were
breaching the dike in Wilkes-Baare. Nearly 75,000 people would
evacuate in the face of the rising waters. The raging waters would
flood much of the city. There was $3.5 billion in damage and 122
deaths as a result of the floods.

..Happy Father's Day...

Today is the day that we set aside to honor fathers. And we have
ordered up some of the best Father's Day weather in recent memory for
all our special dads today. But remember the heat. The combination
of heat and humidity can produce dangerous heat indices.

NATIONAL PEACHES AND CREAM DAY: Not only is it Father's Day, but it
is also National Peaches and Cream Day. The delicious fruits are in
season right now, and no place on earth produces better peaches that
Central Alabama. I bet dad would love a peach right about now.

RING OF FIRE: The big ridge of high pressure is keeping Alabama hot
and dry today. Organized showers and storms are relegated to the
periphery of the high. This morning, we saw a complex of showers and
storms riding the storm track along the edge of the high between
Georgia and South Carolina. The ridge is expected to translate
westward over the next couple of days, putting Alabama back in the
target zone for some of those disturbances. But the heat is the main
story.

HEAT ALERT: The combination of heat and humidity can make it
difficult for the body to cool itself. When heat index values
approach 105F or higher, you are getting into dangerous territory. We
are flirting with that for the past couple of days, and will continue
to do so into midweek. Limit your exposure to the sun, wear loose
fitting,
lightweight, light colored clothing. Drink plenty of water.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The high pressure ridge will shift ever so subtly
back to the west over the next few days. This will slide the edge of
the storm track back into Georgia. This means we can't rule out a
storm sliding down the ridge and clipping eastern Alabama Monday night
into Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday. But as the East Coast trough
lifts out, the ridge will build back over Alabama later in the week,
keeping us hot and dry. I think we will gradually see the
reintroduction of those isolated afternoon storms as we move into the
later part of the week. The weekend looks basically hot and dry.
Long range crystal ball forecasting indicates that deep moisture will
build into the Southeast during the final week of the month and into
July with above normal precipitation.

TROPICS: The Atlantic continues to be quiet, but the eastern Pacific
has become active. A trough of low pressure off the coast of Mexico
has led to an increase in
storminess and a tropical depression may form offshore of Acapulco.
It will move west northwest paralleling the coast up towards Puerto
Vallarta.

ON THIS DATE IN 1981: Washington's Mount Rainier is popular with
climbers. Located 50 miles southeast of Seattle, it is the state's
highest peak at 14.140 feet. Many climbers are lost there each year,
most to avalanches. The worst accident in the history of the mountain
occurred on this date as eleven climbers were caught by an ice
avalanche as they rested on a glacier at 11,000 feet. It is the worst
accident in North American mountaineering.

...The Longest Day...

Today is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. It
is the summer solstice, or the first day of summer day. It is the day
that features the longest amount of time between sunrise and sunset.
From now on the Suns apparent motion in the Earth's sky is southward
again (very slowly for the next few weeks) until the winter solstice
on December 21.

WELCOME TO SUMMER: As I said, this is the first official day of
summer, as signaled by the summer solstice, which occurred at 12:54
a.m. CDT this morning. It will definitely feel like summer again
today, and for the next several days. There are some interesting
pattern changes in the offing, but I don't think that they are going
to put much of a dent in the current heat we are experiencing.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY: It's a real dad kind of day. Great for lounging
in a hammock. Or cutting the grass. Perhaps a backyard barbecue.
Maybe a lake trip or tickets to City Stages. He does like the Doobie
Brothers, you know. It is the best Father's Day weather we have had
in a long time. Just take it easy with the high heat and humidity.

THE FORECAST: We are getting into a really weird pattern for June.
By Tuesday, we will have a big trough in the West, a giant bubble of
high pressure over the Mississippi Valley, and a huge trough and
coastal storm along the East Coast. We stay mainly hot and dry with
that pattern, through Tuesday. The one exception to the dry part is
that I think we see a little backdoor cold front trying to sneak in
from the northeast Monday night, and this could trigger a few storms,
especially over East Alabama late Monday into early Tuesday. We stay
in a northerly flow aloft and at the surface into Thursday. It will
be hot and humid each day, with mostly sunny skies each morning until
fair weather cumulus start forming before lunchtime. Highs will be
well into the 90s each day, with dewpoints in the lower 70s, so it
will feel muggy. That heat and moisture could scare up an isolated
showers or storm any afternoon.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: By Friday, a trough starts developing
over the Central part of the country. This will set the stage for
some cooler air to try to come south and we should see another one of
those over-ambitious early summer fronts that will whip up a battle
zone of storms to our north. That could get close enough to increase
our rain and storm chances by Friday into Saturday, but if you look at
it, the chances are still pretty small, about what you would expect in
Alabama in the summer.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: Destructive hurricane hits the Tallahassee/
Apalachicola area of Florida. The hurricane was the first of three
early season hurricanes that struck Florida in less than a month. All
three hurricanes formed in the western Caribbean and curved toward the
Big Bend area of Florida. There was extensive damage along the coast
because of extremely high tides and winds. The storm was classified
as a "great hurricane" by Grady Norton in his
research
.
