...Chilly Saturday...

January is living up to its nasty reputation on this late January Saturday in Alabama, with temperatures falling through the 30s, lots of drizzle and a biting north wind. A winter weather advisory is in effect for counties in the Tennessee Valley through mid-afternoon, as leftover drizzle and light rain is freezing on exposed surfaces with temperatures at 32F or below.

SLIPPERY ROADS? Be alert to the potential for some slippery roads from Cullman County northward into Tennessee and northeastward through northern Blount, DeKalb and Jackson Counties through the afternoon hours. In addition, any water that remains on roads could freeze later into the dreaded black ice and remain a threat until late Sunday morning.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Sunny but chilly tomorrow. More typical January temperatures will return Monday. There is a tiny chance of a passing shower Monday night and early Tuesday as a disturbance passes to our south. Wednesday looks to be a fairly nice day, with lots of sunshine and highs in the 50s. Thursday will feature increasing clouds with rain by afternoon and into the overnight. More rain will wraparound the back side of a slow moving low pressure system on Friday as it moves east of Alabama. Next weekend looks to be dry and fairly mild.

STORM ALERT TOUR: Our severe weather tour across Alabama rolls along; we will be in Gadsden at the Convention Hall next Tuesday (NOT Thursday). You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

WEATHERBRAINS: Hope you have downloaded and listened to Les Lemon on episode 209. The famed radar expert was a great guest. This week, we will be talking all things amateur radio with several experts in the field. Be a part of the fastest hour in weather by listening at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribing at iTunes. It's free! Follow the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1966: Alabama's coldest temperature ever (-27F) was measured at New Market in Northeast Madison County about 25 miles northeast of Huntsville. The reading was recorded under clear skies with light winds and 12 inches of snow on the ground, perfect for extremely cold weather. This broke the previous state record of -18F at Valley Head, which was measured on February 14, 1905. Mississippi also recorded their state all time record low on this date with -19F at Corinth.

Other lows on that frigid morning: -24F at Russellville, -17F in Haleyville, -12F at Redston Arsenal, -11F in Valley Head. In the Birmingham area, it was -4F at the Airport, -5F in Pinson and -2F in Bessemer. In South Alabama, it was 9F in Fairhope and Bay Minette, 13F in Mobile, 14F at Fort Morgan, 5F at Montgomery and Selma. It was 0F as far south as Clanton.

The same storm dumped heavy snow across other parts of Alabama, including 11 inches at Moulton, 8 inches at Hamilton, Scottsboro, Cullman and Red Bay; 7 inches at Huntsville, Guntersville, Double Springs and Russellville and 6 inches at Jasper, Falkville and Albertville. Just over an inch fell at Birmingham. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com @ wxhistorian.

...A Miserable Saturday...

Too bad it was cloudy across Central Alabama last night. The moon was full and at perigee last night, meaning that it was at its closest distance to the Earth, and thusly appeared 14% larger and 30% brighter than the dimmer full moons of the year. This full moon is traditionally known as the Wolf moon.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: If you thought Friday was a miserably cold, wet and breezy day, you're gonna really hate today. As low pressure departs to the east, brisk northerly winds will pull cold air into Alabama. Temperatures in the I-20 corridor will start out in the upper 30s, slowly falling through the day to near freezing by late afternoon. Those breezy north winds will make it feel even colder. To add insult to injury, there could be a little light rain or drizzle, mainly east of I-65. Over Northeast Alabama, the precipitation could fall as snow flurries. Get ready for a cold night. With clearing skies and a cold airmass, lows tonight will drop into the lower 20s on average, with teens in the colder locations in North Alabama.

NORTH ALABAMA SNOW/ICE: Winter weather advisories continue today for Northwest and North Alabama. Some icy conditions are likely from the Quad Cities of Northwest Alabama to Cullman up through Marshall, DeKalb and Jackson Counties and points north. Elsewhere, any problems will be isolated.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Sunday will be another chilly day, despite near total sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 40s. By Monday, highs will return to the 50s. They will remain in the 50s through the remainder of the week. Lows will be in the 30s to near 40 degrees each morning. There could be a few light showers Monday night into Tuesday morning, but they would not be significant. The next rain chances after that will come on Thursday and Friday, as another trough swings toward Alabama.

WEATHERBRAINS: Monday night's show will feature a discussion of amateur radio, weather and disaster response. The SKYWARN and CWOP programs will be covered, as well as the future of the communications medium. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1936: Birmingham recorded 11"of snow which set the single storm and 24 hour record for the city to that time. The March 1993 Blizzard would eclipse this mark, when 13"of snow fell to set the 24 hour, single storm, single month and single year marks. The January 1936 snow still stands as the most snow ever recorded in any January in the Magic City. Read more about this storm today on www.AlabamaWX.com. ...A Smorgasbord of Weather...

AN OVERDOSE OF BAD, BAD WEATHER: You name it. We could find almost any kind of weather in the world right here in the good old USA today. However, thousands of square miles including millions of people are going through a real trying time with the weather. A lot of people will rediscover that it is no fun whatsoever to drive on a sheet of ice.

Fortunately here in Alabama, there has not been very much freezing rain. There was some over the extreme north this morning and also a number of reports of sleet.

At the surface, the low-pressure area causing much of this discomfort is over the NW Gulf extending into South Louisiana. The circulation around that low is pulling in colder air from the north and NE. By daybreak Saturday, the low should be over SE Alabama and continuing to move toward the NE. When it does, our weather will improve. There is widespread rain over the southern part of the Gulf States. Rain will be locally heavy late today and tonight across Central Alabama. The NWS continues a Flash Flood Watch for numerous counties until midnight. The NWS/Huntsville posted a Winter Storm Warning for the extreme northern counties of Alabama.

Much of Central Alabama should receive between 1.25 and 1.50 inches of rain before it is all over. The rain will diminish after midnight.

Colder air will spill in behind the low-pressure area and we will probably not get out of the 30s Saturday. Clouds will hang tough, however, and we should have some morning snow flurries, but no problems with that. North winds will be gusting 25 mph at times. Our coldest morning will be Sunday morning when we have an average low of 21, but some teens in the NE Alabama valleys. Take heart, we look for dry weather and mostly sunshine from Sunday through Tuesday with milder afternoons.

A VERY BAD WINTER STORM: This storm system has played havoc from New Mexico to Tennessee and it will do the same for the Carolinas and Virginia. Reports are that I-40 was already very hazardous in the Nashville area and in the Texas Panhandle I-40 was completely closed with 13 inches of snow on the ground. If we had to pick a state that has suffered most from this winter storm, we would say Oklahoma. Massive damage from freezing rain to power lines, power poles and trees. In places, power was out in some counties. The state of Virginia has declared a State of Emergency. Gatlinburg may get 6 to 12 inches of snow and the city of Charlotte is rapidly getting ready.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: Not everybody is cold. Temperatures were approaching 80 in South Florida this afternoon. The lowest in the lower 48 was 25 below at Embarrass, Minnesota and 24 below at Atqasuk, Alaska. In the Yukon of NW Canada, it was 18 above at Mayo, so temporarily we do not have any bitter super cold anxious to shoot at us.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was glad to have Alex visiting this morning. I took Molly out on her very first long walk, but we hurried back because I was loaded down with weather work. Alex is our grandson and Molly loves him dearly. He is a jewel. He will volunteer for any kind of work without being asked. He did a great job helping me rearrange my office this morning. It is now better laid out than ever. Little Miss Molly sure has had fun visiting with Alex, my daughter and our great granddaughter this morning. Alex is only 15, but he knows computers in and out. I will be as old as Noah before I learn that much. The majority owner says even then it is doubtful. Remember Noah was 400 years old when he built the ark and he had no connection whatsoever with NOAA weather radio. Life goes on.

...Snow and Ice; A Troublesome Weekend...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a complicated one where we will see a risk of some freezing rain, a lot of regular rain, and even some snow flurries and a hard freeze by Sunday morning.

But we start at the beginning. Precipitation was already spreading across Arkansas and other areas to the west of Alabama early this morning. Clouds will thicken today. There could even be a little bit of light sleet spreading into West and NW Alabama early this morning, but it should not cause any problems.

Here in Central Alabama, rain is going to be the main story. We do not expect hardly any this morning, but it will increase some this afternoon. The more steady and widespread rain will be late in the day and tonight. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect due to an expected rain event giving us 1.50 to possibly 2 inches of rain.

By tomorrow morning, the rain will be mostly over, but there will be occasional snow flurries as it turns sharply colder with north winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Clouds will persist most of Saturday. The wind chill may be down in the teens at times for a very uncomfortable day.

A RETURN OF SUNSHINE: That happens on Sunday and most of Monday, but it is going to be very cold Sunday morning. We are using a low of 21 across Central Alabama which means another hard freeze. The Monday low should be about 25. Milder temperatures will set in Monday afternoon and Tuesday with maybe a slight chance of rain again by Tuesday.

EXTREME NORTH ALABAMA: NWS posted a Winter Weather Advisory for counties across the Tennessee Valley. There could be some travel problems developing in that area because of a mix of light freezing rain and sleet. The Advisory is in effect from 3:00 p.m. today until 9:00 Saturday morning. A mix of rain and sleet is expected this afternoon, but no accumulation. For tonight, the precipitation may be a mix of rain, snow, sleet and maybe some light freezing rain. The snow accumulation could amount to around 1 inch across the valley.

ROAMING: The latest snow survey shows that 48% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover early Thursday morning. That will undoubtedly increase dramatically over the next one or two days…down in South Texas, the temperature reached a warm 80 at Laredo Thursday afternoon…the coldest was 24 at Chinook, Montana and 32 below zero at Atqasuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Cannot always assume that all dogs are friendly. Walking Little Miss Molly yesterday afternoon we met a new dog—a fully grown boxer. He was being walked by his owner. Molly walked up to him with her tail wagging wanting to welcome him to the community. Instead, he growled and lunged at her. It scared my little pal to death. She ran and sat on my shoes, then she ran under a bush by the walking track and hid. Life goes on.

...A Soaking Coming Up...

THE COMPLEX ALABAMA STORY: Have you ever been in a situation where so much was going on that it was difficult to describe it in an easily understandable effort? That is pretty much what we are dealing with at the present time. I always like to write the first paragraph of my discussion to clearly state what is ahead, so if that is all you read, you will get the main facts. So, we will do that in this second paragraph.

A cold front was pushing into extreme North Alabama this afternoon. Meanwhile, we have a low-pressure area forming to our west and it is going to track eastward to near New Orleans by late tomorrow, then across South Alabama overnight and into South Georgia on Saturday. Therein lies a problem. On the north side of that low, the circulation will be out of the north and NE and that may make our North Alabama temperature forecast vary more than we think. Here in Central Alabama, look for rain to become widespread Friday afternoon and continuing Friday night. It may get cold enough late Friday night to mix with a little sleet or snow. Saturday will be very uncomfortable with north winds gusting over 25 at times and high temperatures only in the upper 30s. There should be some lingering snow flurries. Finally, sunshine returns Sunday.

Something else we have to watch very closely is the winter storm that is going to affect areas just north of Alabama. Nashville is expecting 3 to 4 inches of snow and the snow in Memphis may accumulate 1 to 2 inches. The NWS/Huntsville is watching very closely the North Alabama counties and the Tennessee Valley. If we get a solid snow cover, even as far south as Tennessee, it could make our temperatures actually be lower than the models indicate.

At this time along the I-20 corridor (which means Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston), we do not believe there will be significant travel problems. We should caution that when the temperature is below freezing, only 0.01 or 0.02 rain can create some bridge icing.

THE MAJOR WINTER STORM: An amazing array of winter storm watches or warnings for most of New Mexico east across the Texas Panhandle, all of Oklahoma, most of Arkansas and Northern Tennessee. There may be near blizzard conditions over the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma is going to be very hard hit by sleet and freezing rain and snow. There could be widespread power outages and trees coming down from the ice load. Even as far east as Nashville, 3 to 4 inches of snow are expected Friday. In East Tennessee, Gatlinburg as well as Asheville, North Carolina are expecting 6 to 12 inches of snow with heavier amounts in the mountains. Trees and power lines may come down in that area also. By Sunday morning, temperatures should be 15 to 20 across the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama.

STORM ALERT 2010: The first edition is at 7:00 tonight at the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Ashley, Jason and James will all be there with some amazing weather stories and training information. Get there early to get a good seat. The doors open at 5:00. The next session will be next Tuesday night at the Gadsden Convention Center.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Because of a lengthy business transaction in our home yesterday afternoon, Little Miss Molly was ignored. She did not appreciate that. Late last night, after a bathroom walk, the majority owner and I pulled a surprise on her and both played ball. The majority owner was at the back door and me at the front. We kept throwing her favourite ball back and forth faster than she could catch it. She got so excited, she almost went berserk. After that she folded up for the night and never moved. Life goes on.

...Rain Tomorrow; Snow/Ice To the North...

RAIN, THEN COLD: A nasty winter storm is unfolding today across Oklahoma, where significant accumulations of ice and snow are likely creating very difficult driving conditions and potential for power outages due to ice accumulation. To the south, rain will be widespread across Texas, where a few strong to severe storms could even develop over the southern counties of that state this afternoon. Here at home, today will be very comfortable with a partly sunny and a high close to 60 degrees this afternoon.

The winter storm over Oklahoma will move east, impacting much of Arkansas late tonight, and Tennessee during the day tomorrow. Winter storm watches and warnings cover this region, but down here in Alabama it looks like the bulk of the precipitation will fall in the form of rain. The rain will move into West Alabama tomorrow afternoon, becoming widespread tomorrow night. We are still projecting average rain totals of 1 to 2 inches for most of the state.

SATURDAY: Much colder air will invade the state after midnight tomorrow night, and there remains a chance that a few snow flakes or ice pellets could mix with the rain before it ends. Temperatures around here (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston) should remain above freezing tonight and during the day tomorrow, so we don't expect any travel problems around here. We will have to watch for potentially colder surface temperatures over the far northeast corner of the state (Jackson, DeKalb, Cherokee counties), but even there we don't expect significant winter weather issues.

Saturday will be sharply colder, with temperatures holding in the 30s all day along with a very chilly northwest wind, keeping the wind chill index below freezing at times. There also could be enough leftover moisture for a few snow flurries Saturday morning.

SUNDAY: A significant freeze is likely early Sunday, with most places seeing a low in the low 20s. The colder valleys across North Alabama have a chance of reaching the upper teens. Then, we should warm nicely Sunday with a bright sunny sky; the high will be in the mid to upper 40s. That warming trend will continue early next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1887: Snowflakes "as large as milk pans" fell across several square miles of Montana. The flakes, which were measured at 15 inches across and I8 inches thick, hold the unofficial size record !

STORM ALERT 2010 BEGINS TONIGHT: Our annual severe weather tour across Alabama kicks off this tonight in Winfield at First Baptist Church. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat; the doors open at 5.

...A Variety Of Weather...

RAIN AND THEN MUCH COLDER: Central Alabama will have a variety of changeable weather over the next several days and this includes some wintry precipitation for the extreme north. We have two things taking aim at us. A low-pressure system forming over the NW Gulf and west of our area will be over Louisiana by Friday morning. The center will move eastward across South Alabama and into South Georgia by Saturday morning. Meanwhile, a good dose of arctic air will be pushing southward and entering Alabama by Friday. This creates some worrisome forecast problems. For Central Alabama, we think this will be how the story pans out:

Cold again tonight with near freezing, milder Thursday with upper 50s. Clouds will increase later with a slight chance of rain Thursday night. Our main event will be Friday and Friday night. A cold rain will become widespread and the rain will be heavy at times. As the colder air moves in, we may see a mix of light snow or light sleet with the rain Friday night. You will really feel the arctic air on Saturday with north winds 12-25 mph and temperatures in the 30s all day. By Sunday, sunshine will return, but we will have an early morning hard freeze with temperatures in the low 20s and maybe some teens in the NE Alabama valleys.

TRAVEL PROBLEMS: We do not think so here in Central Alabama. It could be a different story up in the Tennessee Valley. The NWS in Huntsville is calling for rain changing to light sleet and freezing rain after midnight Thursday night. On Friday, the rain should mix with light freezing rain during the morning. Friday night they are forecasting light freezing rain and widespread light sleet in the evening and light freezing rain after midnight. Some snow and light sleet during the morning.

WINTER WEATHER OVERVIEW: Numerous counties are under some kind of wintry weather threat all the way from Arizona and Utah across New Mexico, North Texas, all of Oklahoma, most of Arkansas, extreme North Mississippi and most of Tennessee. Some places will have serious travel problems, especially in parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and West Kentucky. Would you believe that SE Arizona is going to get 6 to 10 inches of new snow in the mountains tonight? That is the same area where the NWS/Tucson issued a Blizzard Warning last week. 4-8 inches of new snow for the north rim of the Grand Canyon where the snow is already very deep.

ROAMING: 79 was the warmest in the USA yesterday in Kingsville, Texas...13 below was the coldest this morning at Longville and Agassiz, Minnesota...it was 25 below at Atqasuk, Alaska.

STORM ALERT 2010: The first program is Thursday night at the First Baptist Church in Winfield. It starts at 7:00 p.m. The 33/40 weather team will be there with a lot of good stories and some prizes. The next edition is on Tuesday, February 2 at the Gadsden Convention Hall. That is the only one this year that is not on Thursday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Little Miss Molly came to live with us about 6 years ago, she immediately won me over. On our very first walk at daybreak, we noticed a very tall discombobulated barren tree—the tallest one in the community. Two old crows were on opposite sides of the tree arguing at the top of their voices—probably divorce was proceeding. Little Miss Molly stopped and watched intently. We named it the Old Crow Motel. We have a tendency to name everything. The old motel has been empty most of the time lately, except this morning there were at least 25 very small birds hopping around through all the rooms (er, limbs) and singing. They had to be no older than kindergarten age. Molly again took it all in. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns By Friday; Then Much Colder...

NICE WARM-UP TODAY: After a cold start with sub-freezing lows, temperatures will recover nicely today, with most communities wind up in the mid 50s with a good supply of sunshine. Tomorrow will stay dry, but clouds will begin to increase during the day in advance of the next storm system in the southern branch of the jet stream. A little light rain could break out late tomorrow night, and due to the evaporative cooling process, a few ice pellets (sleet) could be initially mixed with the rain, but that should not create any travel issues.

MESSY FRIDAY: A soaking rain returns to Alabama on Friday, with potential for 1 to 2 inches of rain. And, just to the north, a nasty snow/ice situation will break out around the I-40 corridor over much of Arkansas and Tennessee, where winter storm watches are in effect. Snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible across northern parts of Arkansas and Tennessee, with freezing rain likely farther south over the southern counties of these states, where ice accumulation up to 1/2 inch is possible. This type of icing can cause power outages and very difficult driving conditions, so be very aware of the weather if you are headed north of Alabama tomorrow night and Friday.

FRIDAY NIGHT/SATURDAY: Much colder air will flood Alabama as the weekend begins, and there is a window where the rain could change over to a wintry mix of sleet, light snow, and some freezing rain Friday night. For now it looks like this precipitation will be rather light, and we don't expect major problems with travel. But, temperatures will drop to near freezing after midnight Friday night in parts of North Alabama, and a little bridge icing is possible. Saturday will be a cold and blustery day, with temperatures holding in the 30s all day with a brisk north wind and a chance of morning snow flurries.

The coldest morning during this cold snap will come early Sunday, with lows should be in the 20 to 25 degree range. Then, with a strong January sun, we will warm to near 50 degrees Sunday afternoon as warming trend begins.

ON THIS DATE IN 1940: Alabama and the Deep South were in the deep freeze. The official reading at the Birmingham City weather office was 1 degrees. The airport reading, the official location now, was –10 degrees. Skaters were actually able to skate on the frozen surface of the Black Warrior River west of Birmingham, where ice was six inches thick near the banks. An unheard of event! The cold followed on the heels of a ten inch snowfall on January 23rd.

STORM ALERT 2010 BEGINS TOMORROW NIGHT: Our annual severe weather tour across Alabama kicks off tomorrow night in Winfield at First Baptist Church. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. See you there!

...January Behaving Normally...

MORE CHANGES IN ALABAMA WEATHER: Hold on to your hat. We have had a lot of windy weather lately and today is no exception and the wind is not related in any way to thunderstorms. In fact, most areas of the state were sunny or partly sunny this afternoon and west winds were gusting between 20 and 25 mph. Temperatures in the 40s over the northern counties made it feel rather cold. It was in the 50s over the southern part of the state. The NWS continues a Wind Advisory for many parts of the state. Not a good day to be out on the open waters of a lake or river. The wind should diminish tonight.

Look for temperatures to drop into the 20s tonight, because the sky will be mostly clear and the wind will diminish greatly. Clouds will increase Thursday and some rain will reach our area late Thursday night.

THEN, THE MAIN STORY: By Friday morning, an impressive low-pressure area will be centered from Louisiana down through the Western Gulf. A large high-pressure area representing cold arctic air will be over Minnesota and Iowa. In places it is going to be a borderline situation, but we think most of the precipitation on Friday (and it will become widespread) will be rain, except over the extreme north. By Friday night there is a good chance that the rain will become mixed with or change over to light snow and sleet and possibly a bit of freezing rain. We should see some lingering snow flurries for a time Saturday morning. It will be windy and cold all day Saturday with NW winds 15 to 25 mph.

PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS: Across the I-20 corridor, we look for an average of 1.50 to 1.60 inches of rain—most of that coming on Friday. We do not think there will be travel problems involved with the change over Friday night, but we will, of course, watch that closely. By Saturday morning, the low-pressure area should be near the coast of Georgia and South Carolina permitting strong north winds across all of Alabama. The high-pressure system will be over our area Sunday and Sunday night. This will allow temperatures well down into the 20s those two nights.

ROAMING: To the north of Alabama, this storm may bring some winter weather problems. Since they will be on the north side of the low, there is a chance of significant snow, sleet and freezing rain from Oklahoma eastward across Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky and parts of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. The early morning snow survey showed 45% of the lower 48 with a blanket of snow compared to 63% a month ago today. You now have to go to Iowa, Nebraska and extremely Northern Illinois to find a snow cover in the central part of the nation. We do not have the coldest temperature for the lower 48 this morning, but the coldest in Alaska was 27 below at Beaver Creek.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: away all morning and when we got home, Little Miss Molly pounced on us like we had been gone a week. This also meant a strong request from her for a walk along the track. There are zillions of tiny leaves along both sides of the track and she stops dozens of times to sniff those. I do not know why. But she loves to find a small tree or bush for her bathroom stop. Life goes on.

...Rain By The End Of The Week...

DRY THROUGH THURSDAY: Cool and dry weather continues across Alabama today, with maximum available sunshine and a high around 50 degrees at most places. The day will be breezy with westerly winds gusting to 25 mph at times. Then, tonight, with a clear sky and calm wind, temperatures will drop quickly, and most places will be in the 25 to 29 degree range at daybreak tomorrow. Tomorrow promises to be another sunny day with a high in the mid 50s. Clouds will then increase Thursday ahead of the next storm system.

END OF THE WEEK SYSTEM: The weather turns messy late Thursday night and Friday as a storm system approaches in the southern branch of the jet stream. And, to make it even more interesting, the northern branch of the jet will deliver some Arctic air down into the mid-south, setting the stage for some winter weather problems for a few southern states.

For now, we believe the precipitation here in Alabama will fall mostly in the form of rain late Thursday night and Friday, with potential for freezing rain and some snow to the north over Arkansas and Tennessee. The cold air up there will be fairly shallow, meaning some significant icing problems could develop along the I-40 corridor (Little Rock to Memphis to Nashville). Down this way, we expect 1 to 2 inches of rain from about midnight Thursday night through 12:00 noon Friday. Temperatures should be in the 45 to 50 degree range along the I-20 corridor as the rain falls.

Then, temperatures should begin to fall Friday afternoon as the Arctic air drops southward, giving a window for a wintry mix over North Alabama before all of the precipitation ends. For now, we expect the wintry precipitation to be rather light, with temperatures generally above freezing, so no major travel issues are expected for the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Anniston areas. Some light icing or snow accumulation is possible over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday looks like a very cold day, with temperatures holding in the 30s all day with single digit wind chill values. There could be enough leftover moisture for a few morning snow flurries. Then, we will drop into the low 20s by daybreak Sunday, with potential for upper teens across the colder valleys. A warming trend begins Sunday afternoon with a high around 50 degrees along with a good supply of sunshine. We should warm into the mid 50s by Monday of next week.

STORM ALERT 2010: Our annual severe weather tour across Alabama begins this week! Our first stop this year will be Thursday evening, January 28 in Winfield at First Baptist Church. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

...March Winds in January...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of changeable weather and also some difficult forecast challenges toward the end of the week that may involve some wintry precipitation. Again, I am getting the wagon before the mule, so we will go back to the beginning. A nice break from wet weather through Wednesday. It will be below freezing by daybreak. Tuesday will be cool all day, but lots of sunshine although breezy. Wednesday will also feature mostly sunshine, but clouds move in at night.

WHEN DOES ALL THE ACTION BEGIN: We believe that will be Thursday, Friday and maybe Saturday. Weather models, which we have to be friendly with, are changeable during that period of time. By Thursday a cold front will be pushing southeast toward Alabama. A key factor is a low-pressure area that will be over Central Mississippi by Friday morning. That will give us another windy day with south winds gusting over 30 mph frequently. Our showers will start on Thursday with showers and some thunderstorms increasing Thursday night. Sharply colder air will arrive Friday and we will see a changeover to wintry precipitation Friday night and into Saturday morning. It is absolutely too early to define the situation very clearly. It is a situation where we must say stay tuned. We believe the low by Wednesday morning will be in the low to mid 20s.

STATE-WIDE SOAKING: We had another one of those yesterday and those came fairly often during 2009. Here are just a few of the Sunday totals.

2.14 Guntersville

1.82 Birmingham Airport

3.75 Arkadelphia

3.21 Scrougeout

3.06 Cordova

GLOBAL ROAMING: The snow pack in the Western USA is mind-boggling. The series of storms last week dumped over 90 inches of snow in the high country along the California/Nevada border and also on the slopes of the San Francisco Peaks in Northern Arizona. The two highest peaks in the state are near Flagstaff and the Snow Bowl had as much as 93 inches on the ground. News reports vividly told of the major flooding in California and Southern Arizona. A very dramatic rescue of a dog about to drown in Los Angeles. A fireman descended from a helicopter and grabbed him. USA temperature extremes included 85 Sunday at Fort Myers. Florida and 14 below this morning at Durango Colorado. Coldest in Alaska was 38 below at Beaver Creek.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Over this weekend there was another one of those events which meant no sleep for most of Saturday night and Sunday. Little Miss Molly did not understand that. She watched almost every move I made and had a constant supply of balls in the living area floor trying to tempt me into a game. I finally gave in last night, right in the midst of a football game I wanted to see. I played with her so long, she begged off and took a nap. That is rare. We have already had three walks today. She likes to determine which direction we go when we step out the door. Life goes on.

...Deficit Denting Rain...

Colder is the weather word as we start a new work week here at the end of January. A deep trough of low pressure has aligned itself from southern Canada through the Great Lakes and straight into Alabama. This will allow for some colder readings over the next couple of days.

DENTING THE DEFICIT: Rainfall amounts were generally just below two inches yesterday across Central Alabama. The 1.85 inches that fell at the Birmingham International Airport erased a good bit of the deficit that had built up since the first of January. We should hold our own for the rest of the week, with about an inch expected from a late week system.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: A good bit of sunshine will return to Alabama today, but the mercury will still struggle to surpass 50 degrees. Most spots will make the lower 50s. A strong westerly wind all day will make It feel colder. With clear skies overnight tonight and relaxed winds, the mercury will fall off into the upper 20s. We have been saying Tuesday high temperatures would not make it to 50, and that now looks likely. Another freeze is likely area wide Tuesday night.

WARILY WATCHING END OF WEEK SYSTEM: Wednesday and Thursday will feature partly cloudy and milder conditions, with highs near 60. Clouds will increase Thursday night and rain will move in late. Temperature profiles should be warm enough for the precipitation to fall as rain across Central Alabama, but there is a chance that there could be a changeover to freezing rain or a wintry mix as the cold front moves through early Friday. There could also be a little light snow or mix on Friday, as temperatures hover in the 30s with a strong northwest wind. Things will be sharply colder over the weekend, with highs on Saturday barely getting above 32F.

WEATHERBRAINS: Busy show tonight with Betsy Kling from WKYC in Cleveland joining the panel . It will be a memorable show with legend Les Lemon in the role of Guest WeatherBrain. You won't want to miss this show as the discussion turns to radar, severe storms and weather safety at large venues Keep up with the goings on behind the scenes at the show by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Meteorologist Bert Reeves was concerned as he studied the weather charts for the day of the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. It had been a snowy winter across much of Indiana, including South Bend, where 50 inches had already fallen in January and 113 inches since the fall. But Reeves knew that the worst was yet to come. An intensifying low pressure system was moving up from Texas and colliding with very cold Arctic air in place over the Great Lakes Region. He would issue a blizzard warning for the entire state of Indiana. It turned out to be a good move, as a major blizzard paralyzed much of the Upper Midwest, with South Bend IN getting dumped on by an amazing 4 feet of snow! ...Storms Moving Out...

It was a dark and stormy night. That's how Snoopy started all of his novels in the comic strip Peanuts. His depiction would have been accurate about the weather across Central Alabama overnight. The tug of war between intensifying low pressure to the west of Alabama and a stubborn high to our northeast led to screaming gradient winds all night, averaging 15-25 mph and gusting frequently above 30 mph. A strong trough of low pressure pushing our way was able to maintain a line of storms all the way across Mississippi and into western Alabama after midnight. The line of showers and storms stalled out, producing heavy rain over some western sections before the front nudged the line eastward early this morning. The delay gave the atmosphere time to send in reinforcements in the form of warmer, more moist air that set the stage for increasing thunderstorms this morning.

SEVERE SUNDAY: A tornado watch is in effect for parts of South and South Central Alabama until early afternoon as a firehose of moisture continues to spray instability up into Southwest and South Central Alabama. The powerful wind fields make for abundant spin in the atmosphere, and any robust thunderstorm updrafts could start spinning like a top with the potential to produce tornadoes. Even where there are no storms, those boundary layer winds will be roaring until late morning. The storms will end from the west through the morning hours, exiting eastern Alabama this afternoon.

CHANGE TO COLDER: Cooler and drier air will start to flow into Alabama this afternoon and evening. We will start of fin the lower 40s on Monday, with highs struggling to reach the lower 50s on Monday, despite a good supply of sunshine. Expect a freeze Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with sunny skies both days.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: The system coming in for Thursday night and Friday promises to be an interesting one. It will spread rain into Alabama Thursday night, perhaps changing over to a wintry mix before ending Friday morning.

EL NINO: NOAA's Oceanic Nino Index continues to increase. For the October – December period it increased to +1.5, which is the threshold for a major event. Further strengthening is expected over the winter. This means more stormy conditions for Alabama and the Deep South over the next few months. So what else is new?

WEATHERBRAINS: Betsy Kling from Cleveland is scheduled to be our guest panelist for episode 209 Monday night. The Guest WeatherBrain will be famed severe weather and radar researcher Les Lemon. We will talk about his career, the evolution and future of weather radar and the safety of large venues during severe weather. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, or try it out at www.WeatherBrains.com. Always free and always fun!

ON THIS DATE IN 1964: A tornado touched down southeast of Harpersville in Shelby County, Alabama, then tore through the eastern sections of the town around 7 p.m.. Ten people died in the twister. Contents of some damaged homes were blown over one half mile away. One home was moved 200 feet, but remained intact! Follow my daily weather history tweets on Twitter: www.twitter.com/wxhistorian.
