...Chilly Saturday...

January is living up to its nasty reputation on this late January Saturday in Alabama, with temperatures falling through the 30s, lots of drizzle and a biting north wind. A winter weather advisory is in effect for counties in the Tennessee Valley through mid-afternoon, as leftover drizzle and light rain is freezing on exposed surfaces with temperatures at 32F or below.

SLIPPERY ROADS? Be alert to the potential for some slippery roads from Cullman County northward into Tennessee and northeastward through northern Blount, DeKalb and Jackson Counties through the afternoon hours. In addition, any water that remains on roads could freeze later into the dreaded black ice and remain a threat until late Sunday morning.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Sunny but chilly tomorrow. More typical January temperatures will return Monday. There is a tiny chance of a passing shower Monday night and early Tuesday as a disturbance passes to our south. Wednesday looks to be a fairly nice day, with lots of sunshine and highs in the 50s. Thursday will feature increasing clouds with rain by afternoon and into the overnight. More rain will wraparound the back side of a slow moving low pressure system on Friday as it moves east of Alabama. Next weekend looks to be dry and fairly mild.

ON THIS DATE IN 1966: Alabama's coldest temperature ever (-27F) was measured at New Market in Northeast Madison County about 25 miles northeast of Huntsville. The reading was recorded under clear skies with light winds and 12 inches of snow on the ground, perfect for extremely cold weather. This broke the previous state record of -18F at Valley Head, which was measured on February 14, 1905. Mississippi also recorded their state all time record low on this date with -19F at Corinth.

Other lows on that frigid morning: -24F at Russellville, -17F in Haleyville, -12F at Redston Arsenal, -11F in Valley Head. In the Birmingham area, it was -4F at the Airport, -5F in Pinson and -2F in Bessemer. In South Alabama, it was 9F in Fairhope and Bay Minette, 13F in Mobile, 14F at Fort Morgan, 5F at Montgomery and Selma. It was 0F as far south as Clanton.

The same storm dumped heavy snow across other parts of Alabama, including 11 inches at Moulton, 8 inches at Hamilton, Scottsboro, Cullman and Red Bay; 7 inches at Huntsville, Guntersville, Double Springs and Russellville and 6 inches at Jasper, Falkville and Albertville.
