...October To Start On Dry Note...

October is typically the driest month of the year on average in
Birmingham. On average, 3.23 inches of rain falls in the month. The
first fifteen days of the month look like they are going to live up to
the arid advance billing. In fact, the first half of the month may be
as dry as a bone in the Magic City.

BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND: It has been a picture perfect weekend across
Alabama, with brilliant blue skies, warm temperatures, low humidities
and a refreshing easterly breeze. All of this is thanks to a surface
high over New England. This sprawling anticyclone extends all the way
into the Southeast. Aloft, we find a ridge of high pressure over the
Mississippi Valley. The combination of the two is keeping Alabama
mostly clear and warm. Unfortunately, the low humidities and breezy
conditions are contributing to a high fire danger. While the danger
will not be as great today as yesterday, it will still be high this
afternoon and extreme caution must be exercised to prevent fires. The
dry air leads to large ranges in daily temperatures from lows that are
right around average to highs that are a few degrees above average.

BROKEN RECORD: The forecast has become tiresome. Beautiful but
tiresome. Dry and warm conditions will continue for the foreseeable
future with no storm systems to speak of on the horizon for the next
week certainly and perhaps for the next two weeks. Highs through the
coming week will be in the 80s. Lows will gradually edge into the
60s.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Severe weather is possible today over parts of
the Midwest, from NE Oklahoma and SE Kansas across much of Missouri
and into Iowa. The high pressure over New England is producing a
strong onshore flow along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and
eastern Florida, where coastal flood watches and high surf advisories
are in effect. Gale warnings may be issued today for parts of this
area.

TROPICS: Karen weakened to a tropical depression Saturday morning,
then it was declassified on the afternoon advisory package as it
weakened into an area of low pressure with disorganized thunderstorms.
The system will be monitored for signs of regeneration. There is
still some potential that if it holds together, it will move into an
area where upper level winds are conducive to re-intensification and
then it could be an East Coast problem. The convection with Tropical
Storm Melissa flared up a bit on Saturday despite the presence of
cooler sea surface temperatures and wind shear. The wind shear will
increase as the storm moves west northwestward in the far eastern
Atlantic. Melissa will likely dissipate within three days and poses
no threat to land.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Fairbanks, Alaska recorded its coldest
September ever. Snowfall totaled 24.4 inches during the month. Green
plants had their foliage frozen in place. Extended power outages
occurred as trees bent over power lines because of the heavy, wet
snow.

...Red Flag Warnings This Afternoon...

Red flag conditions this afternoon with warm temperatures, a fresh
breeze and very dry air contributing to extreme wildfire conditions.
All precautions should be take n to prevent the possibility of fire
this afternoon.

YOUR FORECAST: Fine weather for the foreseeable future is the long
and the short of it. Unfortunately, that means no rain. October is
normally a dry month in Central Alabama and we will be starting off
that way. Look for warm sunshine through at least Friday. In fact,
we could be completely dry for the next fourteen days! The deficit
will continue to grow. .

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama is in Jacksonville to play Florida State
today with a 4:00 p.m. kick off. Only a slight chance of a shower
during the game with 82 degrees at kick off lowering into the 70s.
There will be a brisk NE wind. Also in Florida, Auburn plays the
University of Florida at Gainesville starting at 7:00 p.m. There just
a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the area with 84 at
kick off. UAB plays Tulsa in Tulsa with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear
and dry with a gusty south wind. 85 at kick off, but near 70 by the
end of the game

ABOUT TOWN: Did you know Birmingham has one of the up and coming film
festivals in the world? The Sidewalk Film Festival is playing at
venues around downtown. Go to www.sidewalkfest.com to pick out your
list of films to see. The weather will be perfect for being downtown.
And make the 35th Annual Greek Food Festival a part of your downtown
fun. It will feature a live Greek band, folk dancers and a market
place offering food, icons, fine jewelry and more. 3rd Avenue and 19th
Street South will be the headquarters for the excitement. The event
is free, with fabulous food individually priced. Log onto
www.holytrinity-holycross.org.

Tomorrow, Vulcan After Tunes will
feature a concert at 3 p.m.with great weather and views of the city
skyline.

TROPICS: Karen was downgraded to a tropical depression this morning.
The depression is located a little over 400 miles east of the northern
Leeward Islands. It is moving northwest, but is expected to be
downgraded even further later today. The problem: wind shear which
is keeping the convection from staying concentrated around the center,
a necessity for tropical cyclones. Tropical depression number
fourteen became Tropical Storm Melissa this morning, but it will be a
short stay in the majors for Melissa. Shear will weaken this system
also, and it is likely to

ON THIS DATE IN 1915: Isaac Cline of 1900 Galveston Hurricane fame
was the Chief of the U.S. Weather Bureau Forecast Center for the Gulf
Coast in New Orleans LA. Cline knew that major hurricane was moving
across the Gulf of Mexico. His hurricane observation stations on Swan
Island and in Cuba had warned that a strong hurricane was forming in
the Caribbean and moving into the Gulf through the Yucatan Channel.
By the morning of the 29th, Cline predicted that the hurricane was
going to strike the coast south of New Orleans, spreading a dangerous
storm surge along the coast east of where the storm center was going
to make landfall. Warnings were disseminated to the public in the
areas south of New Orleans. Cline's predictions were correct as the
hurricane passed over Batatraia Bay during the early afternoon hours
and moved northward over New Orleans. The town of Leeville on the
Louisiana coast was destroyed, with all but one of the town's
buildings destroyed. A hurricane in 1893 had killed 2,000 people in
the same area, but because of the warnings, only 275 people died in
the 1915 hurricane. - Bill Murray

...Fire Danger High...

FIRE DANGER HIGH THIS WEEKEND: The combination of a very dry
airmass and some breezy northerly winds will set up a high danger for
wildfires across about the eastern half of North and Central Alabama
today. The potential is high for explosive fire growth today. There
should be no outdoor burning.

NO REAL RAIN IN SIGHT: High pressure aloft will remain parked over
the Southeast for the foreseeable future, keeping a parade of upper
level troughs passing to our north at bay through midweek. It will be
interesting to watch a couple of the shortwave troughs that will swing
by on Monday and Wednesday. They could bring some strong storms to
the Plains and Midwest. But here in Alabama, we will be high and dry
I am afraid as the systems will be starved for moisture before their
weak associated fronts reach us. In fact, there are no significant
rain systems shown coming anywhere near Alabama until around the 8th,
and even that one might be weakening. Maybe a little better chance
around the 14th. The drought will only worsen.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama is in Jacksonville to play Florida today
with a 4:00 p.m. kick off. Only a slight chance of a shower during the
game with 82 degrees at kick off lowering into the 70s. There will be
a brisk NE wind. Also in Florida, Auburn plays the University of
Florida at Gainesville starting at 7:00 p.m. There just a slight
chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the area with 84 at kick off.
UAB plays Tulsa in Tulsa with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear and dry with
a gusty south wind. 85 at kick off, but near 70 by the end of the game

TROPICS: Karen presents an interesting case for us to study over
the next few days. Encountering a good bit of shear yesterday, the
system weakened to a minimal tropical storm. A late afternoon comeback
attempt was detected, but the system will likely be downgraded to a
depression today. It started moving northward on Friday and two
schools of thought remain about the future. Karen, or the remnants of
Karen could be picked up and pushed northeastward ahead of an
approaching trough. If the trough misses the storm, however, it could
resume a more westerly or west northwesterly course underneath the
building ridge behind the trough. It could then pose a threat to the
eastern U.S., including Florida. Intensification would be possible.
We will just have to wait and see. Tropical depression 14 formed in
the far eastern Atlantic yesterday. It will have a rough go with lots
of wind shear. Interestingly, the GFS model holds it together and
shows it becoming a formidable hurricane over the Central Atlantic
before it turns north and then northeast out to sea in the extended
period. Look for a tropical or subtropical depression to form off the
coast of North Carolina by Tuesday or Wednesday. It could play a role
or even absorb Karen.

ON THIS DATE IN 1965: Mobile was inundated with 16.85 inches of rain
during the night of the 29th and morning of the 30th as Tropical Storm
Debbie neared the Gulf Coast. The flooding resulted in $25 million in
damage in the Mobile area. Debbie is an interesting case because
the storm never made landfall. As it approached the northern Gulf
Coast on September 29th, it began to entrain dry air and weakened,
dissipating before it could reach land.

UNFORTUNATELY, NO RAIN IN SIGHT: It is with mixed emotions that we
make this forecast. The weather could not be nicer for the next
several days with a real touch of autumn, especially at night. I love
to occasionally go out on a limb, so I will do that and forecast a
low of 48 at some place in the NE Alabama valleys tonight or Saturday
night, probably some place like Valley Head or Bridgeport. It will be
generally in the 50s all across the remainder of North and Central
Alabama for the next two nights at least. High temperatures will be
between 83 and 85 into early next week, however the humidity will be
noticeably lower for the next few days.

All of this good weather has a negative side. Alabama will just get
drier and drier, as we do not have any rain in the forecast over the
next five days. Almost half of Alabama, mainly the eastern part, is
still under an Exceptional drought status, which is the worst of all
the categories. Only part of Mobile County south of Mobile is
classified as having no drought. The 2007 rain deficit is almost 26
inches at Anniston Airport and just under 25 inches at Tuscaloosa
Airport. Anniston has only received 14.50 inches of rain so far this
year.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Could not be nicer for high school football
tonight. Most schools have a 7:00 p.m. kick off. The temperature
should be in the 70s at that time and in the upper 60s by the final
whistle. Clear and dry. In college ball, Alabama is in Jacksonville
to play Florida State tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. kick off. Only a
slight chance of a shower during the game with 82 degrees at kick off
lowering into the 70s. There will be a brisk NE wind. Also in
Florida, Auburn plays the University of Florida at Gainesville
starting at 7:00 p.m. There just a slight chance of a shower or
thunderstorm in the area with 84 at kick off. UAB plays Tulsa in
Tulsa with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear and dry with a gusty south
wind. 85 at kick off, but near 70 by the end of the game.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Lorenzo moved into Mexico early last
night and is dumping very heavy rain. He is already down to a
tropical depression. There is a new tropical depression on the stage.
It is number 14 located about 200 miles SW of the Cape Verde Islands.
Tropical Storm Karen was about 805 miles ENE of the Windward Islands.
There has been some change in the forecast track since yesterday. By
early in the week, instead of moving NW, a track curving more toward
the WNW is forecast.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: How is this for an abrupt change? Yesterday it
was 72 at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York with 1.50 inches of rain.
They are now expecting widespread frost and lows in the mid 20s
Saturday night. Harrisburg drenched with 2.80 inches of rain in the
last 24 hours. Cold temperatures this morning 25 at Stanley, Idaho
and 16 at Eagle, Alaska. The most hurricane names ever retired in one
season was 5 in the disastrous season of 2005. They were Dennis,
Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: An absolutely delightful story in USA
Today yesterday about an assistance dog for a young 12-year old girl
who has a rare disease. When the girl is sick, the dog never leaves
her side. The dog even carries her purse in his mouth and will even
take out her credit card in his mouth and hand it to a clerk. This
young girl, though badly handicapped, has already written six
children's books about her and her dog. This makes me feel guilty. I
had planned long ago to right a children's book about Molly. I
absolutely must rededicate myself. Life goes on......

...A Fine Fall Weekend Ahead...

COOL NIGHTS AHEAD: Dry, continental air will flow into Alabama today
with a fresh north breeze. This airmass will set the stage for a
beautiful early autumn weekend, with sunny pleasant days and clear
cool nights. It now looks like most of North Alabama will be in the
50s both tomorrow and Sunday morning around daybreak, with afternoon
highs in the 82 to 86 degree range.
The dry weather will continue into the first two days of next week,
but moist, tropical air should return during the latter half of the
week, and that seems to be our next chance of showers and Thursday
(Thursday and Friday, October 4-5). There is even some hint of a
tropical type system in the northern Gulf of Mexico that will move in
our general direction.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: What a great night tonight for high school
football, with clear, dry weather, low humidity and about 75 degrees
at kickoff. In college football, the Alabama/Florida State game will
be in Jacksonville at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. Still a risk of some
scattered showers with about 82 at kickoff. Auburn plays Florida at
Gainesville with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. It should be about 82 degrees,
but still a few showers and storms possible early in the game. UAB is
at Tulsa for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff. Clear with 85 degrees as the game
starts and falling into the 70s with a brisk south wind.

TOPIC: TROPICS: Lorenzo is making landfall this morning on the
Mexican Gulf coast, well south of Brownsville, Texas, as a category
one hurricane. This system will rain itself out over Mexico in coming
days. Out in the middle of the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Karen is
fighting some pretty serious shearing aloft; it is moving in a
generally northwest direction, and that should continue into early
next week. If the system survives, there is some risk it could turn
back to the west, in the direction of the Atlantic coast of the U.S.,
late next week.
Elsewhere across the Atlantic basin, disturbed weather continues off
the east coast of the U.S., but that will merge with a cold front and
tropical storm formation is not expected. Another wave is approaching
the Bahamas, but hostile upper air winds should keep that one from
becoming better organized. And, a tropical wave is moving through the
far eastern Atlantic; no sign of any surface circulation right now.

THURSDAY'S SHOWERS: Unfortunately, rain was rather light and spotty
across Alabama yesterday and last night. Rain totals included 1.02"
at Ellisville (Cherokee County), .78" at Dearmanville (east of
Anniston), .52" at Cheaha State Park (from the ABC 33/40 Skycam
network), .47" at Jemison, .29" at Ashland, and .17" at Munford. The
Birmingham Airport only reported a trace of rain, and the rain
deficiency for the year is up to 17.77". The rain was heavier along
the cold front to the north of Alabama; Louisville reported 1.39",
while the total at Cincinnati was 1.80".

NICE DROP OFF IN HUMIDITY: We would rather have rain than lower
humidity. We were disappointed that today's showers and thunderstorms
were not more widespread. Some folks in Central Alabama did get a
good amount of rain, but for the most part the northern third of the
state had only spotty showers. At midafternoon, most of the showers
and storms had shifted down into the central part of the state as
cooler, drier air was trying to work its way into the northern counties.

That front will bring us some pleasant fall weather all the way
through the weekend with a noticeable drop in humidity beginning
tomorrow and some low temperatures in the upper 50s both Saturday and
Sunday morning. Indeed, we may see temperatures as low as 53 to 55 in
some of the cooler NE Alabama valleys. Even though temperatures will
be in the mid 80s in the afternoons, the lower humidity will make
that quite pleasant.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Friday night high school games excellent with
clear, dry weather, less humid and about 78 degrees at kick off. In
college football, the Alabama/Florida State game will be in
Jacksonville at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Still a risk of some scattered
showers with about 82 at kick off. Auburn plays Florida at
Gainesville with a 7:00 p.m. kick off. It should be about 82 degrees,
but still a few showers and storms possible early in the game. UAB is
at Tulsa for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear with 85 degrees as the game
starts and falling into the 70s with a brisk south wind.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots of action in the tropics. Karen, a tropical
storm, was about 920 miles east of the Windward Islands. A trough of
low pressure from the east coast of Florida NNE across the Atlantic
for several hundred miles was producing disorganized thunderstorms.
Some development is possible. A west-moving tropical wave over the
Central Caribbean northward across Hispaniola showed no signs of
development. There was a well-organized tropical wave just south of
the Cape Verde Islands, but it was heading toward unfriendly
territory. Closer to home, the lazy tropical wave over the SW Gulf of
Mexico finally got its act together and grew into Tropical Storm
Lorenzo. It sported sustained winds to near 60 mph as it was crawling
toward the WSW about 6 mph. Little or no change in the track
forecast. It should make landfall on the east coast of Mexico about
as far down in the SW corner of the Gulf as you can go. It will bring
some very heavy rain to that part of Mexico—even as much as 10 inches.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: One hurricane in its lifetime can generate as
much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs. Alaska is by far our largest
state covering 615,230 square miles. That is almost 12 times the size
of Alabama. Naturally they have a tremendous variety of weather. If
you were to overlay the map of Alaska on the lower 48 states, it
would extend from near San Francisco with the SE extension of Alaska
being near Jacksonville. Even the Aleutians portion of Alaska would
stretch from near San Francisco across Southern New Mexico to the
Texas Panhandle. Nice chilly 9 above zero in Alaska this morning at
Anaktuvuk. It was in the teens and snowing over extreme Northern
Canada. Coldest in the lower 48 was 24 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We sure do have mixed up sleeping hours
now with our increased population in Little Miss Molly's home. I was
up before the crack of dawn and took a short walk. The nearly full
moon was a great way to start my day. I also took Little Miss Molly
on her first walk this morning, even though she slept until almost
10. I miss those days when she was younger and would get me up at
4:30. Life goes on......

...Just A Few Showers Today...

BENEFICIAL RAIN NOT LIKELY: A cold front will bring a few showers and
thunderstorms to Alabama today and tonight, but unfortunately
rainfall amounts are now expected to be on the light side. The lack
of deep low level moisture and good upper air support will limit rain
totals to a quarter inch or less for many Alabama communities. The
best chance of showers will come from about 2:00 until 9:00 p.m., and
all of the showers should be over by midnight as a northwest flow
brings in continental air that is much drier and somewhat cooler.
Tomorrow will be a very nice day with ample sunshine, low humidity,
and a high in the low to mid 80s.

OUR WEEKEND: Looks like the coolest morning will come early Saturday,
when the low will be somewhere between 54 and 59 degree for most
North Alabama neighborhoods. The sky will stay generally sunny
Saturday and Sunday with afternoon temperatures peaking in the mid
80s. The humidity will stay low, making the weekend very comfortable.
At this point the first few days of next week are looking warm and
dry as well.

FOOTBALL ON THE ROAD: Moist, tropical air will be the story over
Florida on Saturday, meaning a chance of a shower or thunderstorm at
both Jacksonville, where Alabama plays Florida State at 4:00, and
Gainesville, the site of the Auburn-Florida game at 7:00.
Temperatures at both sites will be generally in the low 80s with very
high humidity values. UAB will be in Tulsa for a 6:00 p.m. game.
Few, if any, showers expected with about 82 at kick off and falling
into the 70s.

TROPICS GONE WILD: Lots of action across the Atlantic basin. Tropical
Depression 13, in the southwest Gulf of Mexico, will drift into the
Mexican coast, well south of Brownsville, Texas, within the next 24
hours. It is expected to become Tropical Storm Lorenzo before making
landfall. Another disturbance just east of Miami has some potential
to develop into either a tropical storm, or some kind of hybrid
system during the next 24 hours as it moves to the northeast. It
should stay offshore for at least the next four days.

Deeper out in the Atlantic, Karen is expected to become a hurricane
this morning as it moves to the northwest across the Central
Atlantic. It is expected to be well southeast of Bermuda early next
week, and it is still too early to determine if the system will
recurve into the open Atlantic, or be forced back to the west (in the
direction of the U.S. Atlantic coast) due to a blocking ridge
building north of the system. Karen has the potential to be a long
lasting storm, but for now it remains far removed from the U.S.
mainland.

We are watching other tropical waves… one in the northern Caribbean,
and another in the far eastern Atlantic; both have some potential for
increased organization during the next few days. The next names for
this season after Karen and Lorenzo are Melissa, Noel, Olga, Pablo,
Rebekah, and Sebastien. Remember, we don't name 'em, we just forecast
'em!

SUNNY, LESS HUMID, WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND: Every weather model run
tries to back off on the amount of rain we will get in a cold front
which is still expected to move through Central Alabama later
tomorrow and tomorrow night. Originally, we thought we would get an
average of ½ inch across this area. It may be more like 1/3 inch. It
also will not be a long drawn out rain event and most of what we get
will be negated by breezy, less humid weather Friday.

We could use all kind of adjectives to brag on the expected weekend
weather, but I hate to when we need rain so badly. Let's just say
mostly sunshine, lower humidity, cooler nights and pleasant
afternoons. We are projecting a low temperature of 58 for Saturday
morning. In this part of the country, temperatures are never uniform
on a still clear night. Therefore, it could be more like 63 or 64 on
the ridges around Birmingham and in the mid 50s in places like Pinson
and especially in other traditional cold spots in NE Alabama. Almost
every day we can find some pleasant low temperatures in NE Alabama.
This morning, for example, it was 59 in DeSoto State Park and at
Black Creek in NE Etowah County. There was a lot of early morning fog
in Black Creek.

OUT OF TOWN FOOTBALL: We will be more specific in tomorrow's
editions, but here is an early look. Alabama plays Florida State in
Jacksonville at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. Pretty good chance of some
showers or thunderstorms in the vicinity and about 83 at kick off.
Pretty much the same story in Gainesville where Auburn plays Florida
for a 7:00 p.m. kick off. UAB will be in Tulsa for a 6:00 p.m. game.
Few, if any, showers expected with about 82 at kick off and falling
into the 70s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Depression #13 was approaching tropical
storm strength over the extreme SW Gulf this afternoon. The NHC still
projects a landfall over the far southern Gulf Coast of Mexico
Friday. No problem for the USA. Tropical Storm Karen was 1,225 miles
east of the Windward Islands. Still will probably not affect the USA
as it turns more northward over the open Atlantic. A weak low-
pressure area near Key West is producing a lot of thunderstorms over
South Florida. It has the potential of developing further as it moves
slowly over South Florida and the adjacent Atlantic. Another low near
Puerto Rico has degenerated. Two more tropical waves were over the
Far Eastern Atlantic and both have potential. Busy time in the tropics.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Oceans have a great impact on weather. The amount
of water in the oceans is beyond imagination. Out in the Western
Pacific, the water reaches a depth of 35,827 feet in Challenger Deep.
That is deeper than Mt. Everest is tall (29,035 feet).

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure did not like what I saw on local
TV from Montgomery. A man took a shovel and beat the living daylights
out of his mother's dog, then poured lighter fluid on it and set the
dog on fire. Major burns. The dog looked horrible on TV, but it was
still brave enough to slowly wag its tail. Hope I never run across
something like that. I know I would intervene and probably get the
living daylights knocked out of me. Little Miss Molly and I traded
sleeping spots about 4 times during the night. She tries to capture
the latest warm spot. Life goes on......

...Cold Front Arrives Tomorrow Night...

ANOTHER VERY WARM DAY: We expect a high today somewhere between 87
and 91 degrees, well above the average high today of 82 degrees, and
not too far below the record high of 95 set back way in 1897. There
will be enough moisture for a few isolated showers and storms during
the heat of the day, but most communities will remain dry and dusty.

TO THE NORTHWEST: The leading edge of much cooler air is getting
closer to Alabama. That front this morning runs from near Chicago to
Dallas, and it will push into North Alabama by tomorrow afternoon. We
expect a decent band of showers and thunderstorms to accompany the
front, and at this time it looks like our primary chance of rain will
come from about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow through midnight tomorrow night.
The computer models have been trending drier with the frontal
passage, and we now expect average rain amounts of one-quarter to one-
half inch around here. That won't make much of a dent in the big
drought; Birmingham's rain deficiency for 2007 is up to 17.51", while
Tuscaloosa needs 25 inches of rain to get back to normal.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: While the core of the really chilly air will
remain north of Alabama, we still expect a refreshing change on
Friday thanks to a fresh north breeze and noticeably lower humidity
values. That continental air will remain in place over the weekend,
so we are forecasting mostly sunny warm days and clear cool nights
through the weekend. At this point it looks like the coolest morning
will come early Saturday, with the low will be somewhere between 57
and 62 degrees for most neighborhoods. The weather really looks great
for the high school football games in Alabama Friday night.

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Since many people are traveling to Florida, let's
take a peek at football weather for Saturday. Alabama will play
Florida State at Jacksonville Saturday evening (4:00 p.m. CDT kickoff)
… the sky will be mostly cloudy and there is a good chance of a
shower or thunderstorm during the game. The kickoff temperature will
be near 86 degrees. Auburn will take on the Florida Gators in
Gainesville Saturday night (7:00 p.m. CDT kickoff); we are
forecasting 83 degrees at kickoff with the chance of one or two
passing showers or thunderstorms during the game. Rain gear is
appropriate for both venues.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Karen, in the eastern Atlantic, is forecast
to turn northward by the end of the week, and at this point it looks
like it will not be a threat to the U.S. mainland. A few tropical
depression, number 13, formed late yesterday in the Southwest Gulf of
Mexico, This one should become Tropical Storm Lorenzo today as it
drifts to the southwest; it should make landfall along the coast of
Mexico sometime tonight or tomorrow. We are also monitoring disturbed
weather over the Bahamas, and in the Northeast Caribbean, but upper
air winds don't favor any organization in those regions for the next
24 hours.

BEST CHANCE FOR RAIN LATER THURSDAY: The temperatures we are having
now are as much as 10 degrees too warm for late September. Some parts
of Alabama had exceeded the 90-degree mark again this afternoon.
Yesterday, almost all of Alabama had 90 or better. It was 93 in Pinson
—a record for September 24.

Look for another unseasonably warm day tomorrow, although not quite
as warm as today. We think Wednesday will be another dry day,
although we could not rule out an isolated shower over close to the
Mississippi border. Thursday still stands out like a sore thumb for
our best chance at rain. All the information we can study points to a
line of showers and thunderstorms reaching Central Alabama either
late in the day or possibly even after dark. Since this will be a
fairly quick-moving event, we cannot get too happy about projected
rain amounts. We may be lucky to get ½ inch across Central Alabama.

After that front goes through, all indications point to a very
pleasant weekend if we can just forget the need for rain. Highs will
be in the mid 80s and lows close to 60. The humidity will be
noticeably lower, especially Friday and Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Karen is the latest in our parade
of tropical systems. At midday, she had sustained winds of 40 mph,
meaning she was barely a tropical storm. She was way out in the
Atlantic and current projections are for her to curve more northward
by Friday and Saturday into the open Atlantic and will probably not
bother the USA. Really, our main interest is our old friend the Gulf
of Mexico. A tropical depression apparently is forming over the SW
Gulf some 180 miles east of Tampico, Mexico. A recon flight will
visit the area this afternoon, but little movement is expected in the
next 24 hours. A larger area of thunderstorms in a broad area of low-
pressure, was centered in the Lesser Antilles. It has changed little
and upper-level winds are becoming less favourable. Another area of
disturbed weather over South Florida, Western Cuba and the Western
Bahamas is because of a mid to upper-level low pressure trough.
Little development expected right away, but it could still dump
locally heavy rain on South Florida and the Keys.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: A distinct hint of our coming change of season.
Famed Trail Ridge Road in Central Colorado was closed due to adverse
weather, meaning snow. 5 inches of snow fell at Alta, Utah in the
Wasatch Mountains SE of Salt Lake from this cold weather system and 2
inches at Lander, Wyoming. The temperature dropped to 18 this morning
at Antero Reservoir, Colorado this morning. It was 21 at Jarvie
Ranch, Utah and 22 at several other locations in the Rockies.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A quick personal note. I think I may
have accidentally deleted 25 or 30 e-mails recently, so if you have e-
mailed me and received no answer, please do so again. Little Miss
Molly sure does love to find a sunny spot to curl up and go to sleep.
This morning I found her by the front door in a patch of sun, dead to
the world and three of her favorite balls cuddled with her: one under
her chin and the others against her belly. She would make an
excellent manager for a doggie baseball team. She stays prepared. She
places her balls at strategic locations so when someone walks through
the living area, she can grab one and be ready to play in less than 3
seconds. Of course, she has a lot of takers. Life goes on......

...Just Like Summer...

FALL OR SUMMER? The calendar says September, but our weather will
feel more like August today. Lots of sunshine and a high close to 90
degrees is our forecast for the state; the chance of a cooling shower
for any one neighborhood is tiny, and most of them will be close to
the Mississippi border, closer to deeper moisture that is west of our
state. Dewpoints will be a little lower than yesterday, but the heat
index values could still rise into the mid 90s this afternoon.

Moisture levels will begin to rise a bit tomorrow, and during the
afternoon hours a few isolated showers or storms could show up. But,
our best chance of rain and storms this week will come on Thursday
with a cold front is expected to pass through. We are projecting
rainfall amounts of one-half inch, but rainfall distribution most
likely will not be very even; some spots will get more, others will
get less. For now it looks like the best chance of rain will come
from about 11:00 Thursday morning until 8:00 Thursday evening.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: At this time we believe the front will have
enough southward push to reach the far southern part of Alabama by
Friday morning, which means drier and slightly cooler should filter
into the northern counties of the state. We expect pleasant weather
Friday through Sunday, with mostly sunny pleasant days and fair,
cooler nights. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s, with lows
generally in the low 60s. Some upper 50s are likely for the cooler
valleys by Saturday morning.

TROPICS: Lots of action across the Atlantic basin, which you expect
in late September. Close to home, a tropical disturbance in the
southwest Gulf of Mexico has been getting better organized, and a
tropical depression could form today. This one should drift slowly to
the west during the next 24 to 36 hours.
Another wave in the eastern Caribbean has the chance to become a
tropical depression today as it moves to the west/northwest; this one
should be close to Jamaica by the end of the week as it moves in the
general direction of the Yucatan Channel and the Gulf of Mexico.

And, in the far eastern Atlantic, Tropical Depression 12 has formed
southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. This one is very well organized,
and could become Tropical Storm Karen today. Late in the week, it
will have the option of turning northward into the open Atlantic, or
keep moving northwest toward the Atlantic coast of the U.S.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year remains 23.52", and
the deficiency for the year is a whopping 17.38". The rain deficit
for the year at Tuscaloosa is almost 25 inches (24.48" to be exact).

HOT FALL DAY: Yesterday's high in Birmingham was 91 degrees; nine
above the average high of 82, and within 8 degrees of the record high
for September 24 of 99, set in 1931.

COOL FRONT ARRIVES THURSDAY: Afternoon temperatures across Central
Alabama will be about 8 degrees warmer than normal for the next
couple of days, but a cool front arriving Thursday will bring the
weather situation back to reality for late September. For the
zillionth time this year, we mention that we do need rain. The cold
front approaching from the NW on Thursday will bring us a good chance
of some showers and thunderstorms. However, it does not look like a
long drawn out weather situation like we had with the remnants of
Humberto. In fact, the showers and storms will diminish Thursday
night followed by clearing, breezy and less humid weather on Friday.
Looking ahead to the weekend, it looks dry with pleasant temperatures
with afternoon highs in the mid 80s and lows across Central Alabama
close to 60. One of our weather models has some more rain appearing
over about the south half of Alabama late Friday. At the moment, we
do not buy that. Sunday afternoon showers brought a respectable 0.62
to Tuscaloosa Airport and a drenching to the Montgomery area, where
Dannelly Field brought almost 2 inches.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Several systems to watch. Let's get Jerry out of
the way. He was demoted to a tropical depression this morning way out
in the Atlantic and moving NE. It should be swallowed by a larger
regular low-pressure area by tomorrow. Our most interesting situation
at the moment is some increase in thunderstorms over the SW Gulf of
Mexico. It has some potential. Howver, it is expected to drift slowly
over the next day or two. Some of the models show it hardly moving at
all. Another low-pressure area with a tropical wave was in the
vicinity of the Windward Islands. It has some potential to become a
tropical depression in the next day or two as it moves NW about 15.
Finally, another tropical wave was over 700 miles WSW of the Cape
Verde Islands (way far away) and it could develop into a tropical
depression during the next day or two as it moves WNW at about 15.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: This is an irony of geography and climate. The
Arctic Circle runs directly through Ft. Yukon in NE Alaska. That
weather station has a notariety of recording Alaska's all-time
hottest temperature of 100. The highest elevation in New York State
is Mt. Mercy in the NE part south of Lake Placid. Another sign of the
season—it was 17 this morning at Eagle, Alaska. In the lower 48, it
was 22 at Meacham, Oregon. Hottest yesterday 97 at Darlington, South
Carolina, Pecos, Texas, Pierre, South Dakota and Smyrna, Tenn. As
much as 6 to 8 inches of heavy wet snow expected above 8,000 feet in
the Wind River, Green Mountain and Rattlesnake Range in Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My neighbor, Sue Giovanni, at the far
end of the walking track and the grandmother of a Shih-tzu named
Brigette, told me that she has all the birds up there after I
commented that Molly and I had seen very few during the long hot
summer. She has a bird feeder and has lots of birds at least twice a
day. She recently saw 7 cardinals at one time. I have never seen
Little Miss Molly so exhausted as she was last night after a long,
fast-moving ballgame that included the little 9-pound rascal, my
grandson and myself. It went a bunch of extra innings. When we
finally stopped, she plopped down in her tracks and wouldn't move.
She slept until 10:00 this morning, but she was a happy little girl.
Life goes on.....

...Chamber of Commerce Weather...

Chamber of Commerce weather is an aphorism for very nice conditions.
I am in Denver with the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce
Birmingham Innovations Group (BIG) Trip to Denver. Our very own Pam
Huff and Bill Castle are also along. The goal of the BIG Trip is to
study what civic leaders in Denver are doing right so that hopefully
some of the ideas can be implemented in the Magic City. Chamber of
Commerce weather prevailed here yesterday where skies were partly
cloudy and temperatures were warm. It will be much cooler today
because of a cold front that passed during the overnight hours.
Arguably, Birmingham's weather could be considered to be of the
Chamber of Commerce variety today, although it is on the hot side.

GOOD MORNING: High pressure will be ridging into Alabama from the
Mid-Atlantic States today. This will push the tropical moisture to
the west and limit showers and thunderstorms to the western half of
the state today. Tuesday looks to be a completely dry day across
Alabama with high pressure in control. An approaching trough of low
pressure and associated front will bring showers and thunderstorm
back into the picture by late on Wednesday, with fairly good chances
of showers and storms on Thursday. This front will usher in a
refreshing airmass for the weekend, with highs returning to near
normal levels for this time of year.

TROPICS: The tropical disturbance over the Gulf of Mexico still has
not amounted to anything. It did send a line of showers and storms
northward yesterday afternoon, however. Upper level winds are
unfavorable for development, but we still could see a tropical
depression form before the system lifts into Louisiana. Subtropical
Storm Jerry has been acquiring tropical characterizes and will become
a full blown tropical storm over the North Atlantic, well west of the
Azores. The disturbance east of the Lesser Antilles may become a
depression today. Another developing system is in the far eastern
Atlantic. It could grow into a formidable Cape Verde hurricane this
week, but it should follow a weakness and eventually turn to the
north before it has the chance to make it to the islands of the
Caribbean.

ON THIS DATE IN 1956: Hurricane Flossy made its second landfall on
the Northwest Florida coast near Fort Walton Beach, after brushing
the coast near Pensacola. The storm spread hurricane conditions
along nearly the entire coast from Pensacola to Panama City. 16.30
inches of rain fell at Gulf Shores on the Alabama coast. .

TWO YEARS AGO TODAY: Hurricane Rita made landfall around 2:30 a.m.
CDT just east of the Louisiana/Texas border between Sabine Pass and
Johnson's Bayou as a Category Two storm with top winds of 120 mph. A
shadow of its former Cat 5 self, the Category Three storm still
brought a devastating storm surge to the coast of Southwest Louisiana
and Southeast Texas. Houston dodged a bullet. Over 2.5 million
Houstonians evacuated. Still, Rita killed six people and did $9.4
billion in damage.

...Greetings From Denver...

Greetings from Denver, where a delegation of Birmingham business and
civic professionals are on the Birmingham Innovations Group (BIG)
Trip to Denver. Barry Copeland and the Birmingham Regional Chamber
of Commerce do such a great job putting on this annual trip. Recent
trips have been to Nashville and Pittsburgh during the past two
years. Thanks to John Montgomery of BIG Communications, a small
delegation of us is going to study professional football, Broncos
style. Our seats are a mile high in Mile High Stadium, but we are in
the game baby!

WELCOME TO FALL: Fall is the new summer, you know. At least that
is what it is going to feel like for the first few days of fall
2007. Fall officially began at 4:51 a.m. CDT this morning, but no
sign of anything that would resemble autumn just yet.

YOUR FORECAST: The airmass over Alabama is very summerlike in
nature. Lots of tropical moisture is in place in the wake of
tropical depression ten, whose remnant low is located on the
Louisiana/Texas border south of Shreveport this morning. Dewpoints
are near 70 across the central part of the state this morning. Drier
air is across the Tennessee Valley. Precipitable water levels are
respectable, not astronomical. It all adds up to scattered storms
across the area this afternoon. High pressure will build into
Alabama from the east on Monday, pushing the showers and storms over
to western sections of Alabama exclusively. Tuesday looks dry. An
approaching front fires up storms late on Wednesday and especially on
Thursday before delivering a more fall like airmass for the weekend.

TROPICS: The prime item in the tropics is the area of low pressure
that will be passing over the Yucatan today on its way into the
southern Gulf of Mexico. This system could become a tropical
depression later today. It will move northwestward. The most likely
target for the developing system will be the Texas coast. The GFS
has consistently depicted a weak system heading toward the Upper
Texas coast, the GFDL strengthening it to a decent tropical storm
before it reaches the lower Texas coast near Brownsville. An Air
Force plane will investigate the system this afternoon. In any case,
the moisture stays west of Alabama. The system in the far eastern
Atlantic about 1700 miles east of North Carolina and 1000 miles west
of the Azores was classified as a subtropical depression this
morning. It is very nearly tropical and is expected to become
Tropical Storm Jerry later today as it moves northeastward. The low
pressure system 400 miles east of the Lesser Antilles looks like it
is already a tropical depression to me. It will become better
organized as it moves westward and a tropical depression may form
later today. Another disturbance just off the African coast will
become a significant hurricane this week as it menaces, but does not
hit the Lesser Antilles. A second Cape Verde storm may also develop
later this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: The worst fears of everyone came true as
water began pouring through repaired levees in new Orleans that had
been damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Waters flooded back into the
Lower Ninth Ward through a patched seawall on the Industrial Canal.
Water from Katrina had just been pumped out of the area.

...Fall has Arrived...

As J.B. says, we weather humans have been counting the entire month
of September as fall. We call it meteorological fall, because the
three months from September through November are the true transition
months. Astronomically speaking, fall begins with the autumnal
equinox, which was observed at 4:51 a.m. CDT this morning. The
equinox marks the point that the sun crosses the celestial equator on
its way south for the winter. Day and night will be the same length
today.

FALL MAY HAVE ARRIVED: But someone needs to tell the thermometer.
It will feel more like August through Tuesday as our persistent
companion, high pressure, builds back into Alabama. Moisture levels
are high since the Gulf of Mexico is open for business, making it
feel humid and keeping overnight lows elevated. We will likely even
see a few readings in the 90s over the next three days.

YOUR FORECAST: But someone needs to tell the thermometer. It will
feel more like August through Tuesday. Moisture levels are high
since the Gulf of Mexico is open for business, making it feel humid
and keeping overnight lows elevated. We will likely even see a few
readings in the 90s over the next three days. We should see better
coverage of showers and storms today. But tomorrow, high pressure
will begin to build into Alabama from the east. This will dampen
those storm chances Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, storms will
begin to form as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Those
storms will be most likely on Thursday with drier conditions by the
weekend.

TROPICS: We will be monitoring a low pressure system over the next
two days as it moves out of the northwestern Caribbean, across the
Yucatan and into the southern Gulf of Mexico. It may well become a
tropical depression. I think it will move toward the Texas and
Louisiana border, making landfall late on Monday. The bulk of that
moisture will move up into the Arklatex. The presence of the low may
help overcome the effects of the high pressure ridging and give us at
least a shot at some showers in the Monday/Tuesday time frame. We
can hope. In the Atlantic, disturbed weather east of the islands has
a marginal chance of developing over the next few days. A
disturbance further east near the Cape Verde Islands has a little
better chance. A large non tropical low east of Bermuda
poses no threat to anything but shipping interests.

VENUS WATCH: Look for a brilliantly bright Venus in the eastern sky
before sunrise this week. It is at its brightest this morning, but
will provide a good show all week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1722: A powerful hurricane struck the northern Gulf
Coast, causing tremendous damage from Mobile to New Orleans. The
newly established capital of New Orleans was heavily damaged. This
storm was also responsible for the city of Mobile being moved to its
present location from its original site which was 27 miles north of
the mouth of the Mobile River.
