==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Icing continues across Northwest Alabama and the
Tennessee Valley this afternoon. Cold air is flowing into Alabama behind an
arctic front. Temperatures are holding steady in the middle 30s across
Central sections and near freezing over the Tennessee Valley. As cold air
continues to be transported in the state, readings will begin to slowly
fall.

ICING: An upper level disturbance is producing precipitation across much of
Alabama and Mississippi, north into Tennessee and then back into Arkansas.
A mixture of sleet and freezing rain has been falling across parts of
Marion, Winston, Franklin, Morgan, northern Cullman, Marshall, Jackson and
DeKalb counties and points north. As the cold air continues to seep into
the area this afternoon, the freezing line will gradually shift
southeastward, reaching the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas during the
evening hours. In areas where the mercury drops below freezing before the
precipitation ends, the precipitation will fall as a mix of freezing rain,
sleet and a little snow. This will result in icing on exposed objects,
starting with the tops of trees. Roads will also be affected, with bridges
icing first. Precipitation should begin tapering off later this afternoon
and only light drizzle and
flurries are expected tonight.

SUNDAY/MONDAY/BEYOND: Tomorrow should dawn cloudy and cold, , but a
little sunshine should break through at times. Temperatures will make it
into the lower 40s, ending the threat of wintry precipitation for the time
being. Skies will quickly become cloudy again Sunday night, and another
disturbance will deliver another shot of precipitation to parts of the area
starting around midnight. Temperatures over northern parts of the area,
generally north of US-278 will likely be below freezing at the onset of the
precipitation, leading to another close call with freezing rain and sleet in
those areas early Monday morning. Monday will feature a good chance of rain
again. Get used to it. Rain will be the weather word for the coming week,
with showers through at least Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Thousands of rail fans, including yours truly, were
disappointed in the wake of the collapse of the snow-laden slate roof on
the historic roundhouse at the B&O Railroad Museum following the Presidents'
Day snowstorm. Priceless steam and diesel locomotives were buried under
tons of rubble. The facility was set to host a huge exhibition of steam
locomotives and railcars in July 2003, but the event had to be cancelled
because of damage to the building and stock that was housed there. The Fair
of the Iron Horse 175 was to have been the biggest event of its kind ever in
the United States and had been nicknamed the "World's Fair of Railroading."
The event was expected to draw 375,000 people to Baltimore and would have
meant tens of millions of dollars to the local economy. It is estimated
that the Museum lost as much as $1 million in potential revenue due to the
cancellation in ticket revenue and sponsorships that had already been sold.
It was not the first time that the collection had fallen victim to a storm.
On August 13, 1935, a severe thunderstorm had collapsed the roof on the very
same building.

...Another Close Call...

GOOD MORNING: Once again this weekend, we are presented with a challenging
winter weather forecast. This time it involves ice. A shallow cold air
mass is seeping into North Alabama this morning. This will result in
temperatures that fall through the day today. Meanwhile, a disturbance
passing to our south will spread moisture up and over the cold air today.

TODAY/TONIGHT: This means that rain will be likely today, even as colder
air filters in. In areas where surface temperatures are below 32F, the
precipitation type will be freezing rain. This is the most dangerous form
of winter precipitation, and can cause icing on trees and power lines.
Roads will become icy, starting with bridges first. Travel could be
seriously affected. The placement of the freezing line will be critical.
Watch it during the day. For now we think it will be north of a line from
Sulligent to Jasper to Blount Springs to Jacksonville. Over the Tennessee
Valley, where the cold air may be deeper, the precip may fall through a
freezing layer long enough for it to fall as sleet.

Precipitation should begin tapering during the afternoon. Temperatures will
fall to freezing after dark in the I-20 corridor, but most of the
precipitation should be gone by then. Still, a little light drizzle could
fall during the night and then could cause icy conditions, especially on
bridges and overpasses.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: We should be in between waves on Sunday and some sun
may return. Clouds will return Sunday night and rain will be possible by
Monday morning. Temperatures could be cold enough for a little freezing
rain across northern sections. Rain may stay with us for much of the coming
week with showers possible Tuesday and Wednesday. Storms will be possible
on Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1847: The first rescue party reached the ill-fated Donner
Party on this date. Over half of the 81 California-bound pioneers perished
during the ordeal, which started when the first snows struck in October of
1846.

A COLD WEEKEND: Lots on our weather plate today. In a nutshell, it
spells a cold weekend with a risk of some freezing rain and sleet, mainly
over the northern one-third of the state. Colder air has been fighting its
way into the state all day, but it was still mild down south this afternoon.
By morning, temperatures should be in the low and mid 30s over the north
part of the state. Meanwhile, we expect some more precipitation to arrive
after midnight. It may be a mix of light freezing rain and sleet over the
north portions. The NWS has a Winter Storm Watch for about the north
one-third of the state. All of that may change late this afternoon and
tonight, so stay tuned. Check our BLOG often over the weekend as we will
have frequent updates. Further north there could be some light accumulations
of ice or sleet, especially across the Tennessee Valley.

The winds aloft are still not cooperating with the arctic air. They
remain out of the west or WSW. This allows occasional minor disturbances to
bring precipitation across and over the colder air. We probably won't see
very much sunshine for the next several days. By Sunday afternoon, it should
warm up enough to mostly eliminate the threat of frozen precipitation.

Another good chance of rain by Monday as temperatures moderate even
more.

FRIDAY'S FINAL THOUGHTS: That is a bitter cold bubble of air over
the north and central part of the country. It has brought some big changes.
Yesterday afternoon it was 87 in Ft. Worth. By midday today it was in the
mid 30s...92 at Bouquillas Ranger Station in Big Bend National Park was the
hot spot yesterday...contrast that sharply with Seeley Lake, Montana where
it was 34 below this morning. The wind chill was as low as minus 55...high
winds in
the NE this afternoon, including New York, where gusts were exceeding 50
mph.

DID YOU KNOW? That the temperature at Birmingham Airport has not
been below 23 all winter? In fact in January, normally our coldest month, it
got no lower than 28. That is extremely unusual. Shall we go ahead and
forecast 400 zillion bugs to bug us this summer?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My goodness. Little Miss Molly slept
in this morning until 9:30...maybe she is getting lazy or maybe we are
keeping her up too late. The poor little girl sure does suffer interrupted
sleep patterns because of us...I got up at 5:30 and there were 12 of her
toys scattered about the living area. I stepped on one of the squeaky toys
and was afraid I had awakened the whole family...great walk this morning. A
new couple in our community met us on the walking track. They remembered
Molly's name from meeting her once before. Both paused and loved her a long
time. Shortly thereafter another Shih-tsu, visiting this week, was coming
down the walking track with Patty her "grandmother." Both dogs jerked us
forward so fast to meet and play that I thought we were going to have a
head-on collision.

...A not so pleasant Weekend...

Temperatures soared well into the 70s across Alabama Friday-some 15 degrees
too warm for mid February. It got all the way up to 78 in Montgomery. It was
75 in Tuscaloosa and Anniston and 74 in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, we have been watching a large match of cold air bulging southward
from Canada and the Northern USA. Early this morning, the colder air was
beginning to spread into Alabama. For the most part, our temperatures will
be falling today with early morning temperatures being the warmest of the
day.

A line of thunderstorms preceded the cold front late Thursday, but this
morning it is mostly showers.

WINTRY PRECIPITATION? There is a chance. We expect it to be cold enough for
a mix of light freezing rain and sleet as far south as Central Alabama over
the weekend, mainly Saturday into Sunday morning. There is a chance that it
will be significant enough to cause some travel problems. That is not sealed
in stone yet. We will be able to get a better handle on that later today. In
any event, today's precipitation should be all rain. Winter Storm Watches
are posted for parts of Northern Mississippi and West Tennessee. We will
watch it closely all day today.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: A summer-like 91 in Laredo, Texas Thursday was equal
to the normal high that Birmingham experiences in July. It dropped to 31
below zero at Embarrass in Northern Minnesota. There were big temperature
drops in the central part of the country as the cold air moved through. In
Dallas/Ft. Worth it was in the mid 80s Thursday afternoon, but quickly
dropped into the 40s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out walking several times with Little Miss
Molly yesterday. It was definitely short-sleeve weather and she enjoyed it
to the fullest. Only thing, she wanted to stay out forever. Even last night
it was comfortable during an 8:00 p.m. walk...I will be busy watching the
weather today, but I am going to try to catch up on playtime with Molly.
