GOOD AFTERNOON: The weekend forecast is a rather easy one with high
pressure remaining in control. It has been a little breezy out there today,
with temperatures Tonight will be comfortable, with lows dropping into the
50s in most many locations. Sunday promises to be dry and warm again with
readings in the middle 80s. It now looks like we will hold onto this fine
weather well into the middle of next week. The next rain chance will
probably come on Thursday, and even then, it will be slight. Tropical Storm
Jeanne should not threaten the U.S. in the near term, but will cross the
southeastern Bahamas. Hurricane Karl should remain well out to sea.

IVAN RAINFALL MYSTERY: So far, officials at the National Weather Service in
Birmingham have been quiet about a very significant record that may have
been set during Hurricane Ivan. I would imagine they have been too tired to
think about it. As we watched our rainfall totals mount on Thursday, J.B.
began to question whether the all time 24 hour record rainfall for
Birmingham was being threatened. That record was 8.84 inches on July 6-7,
1916. The Weather Service issued an excellent Public Information Statement
yesterday about Ivan's effects here in Central Alabama that showed 10.10
inches of rainfall at Birmingham during the storm. Their morning
temperature/precipitation table showed a low amount, something like 4.00
inches. But then it was reissued around noon with a total of 9.75 inches
for the 24 hours, but with a note that the preliminary precip amounts were
being investigated. Then the evening Climate Data reports only showed 5.20
inches of rain for the month. But this morning, the report shows 10.96
inches month to date. I imagine that the fact there were about four hours
of incomplete METAR observations from the airport at the height of the storm
led to the lost rainfall amounts. We smell a record...

ONE MORE RECORD? Those incomplete METAR reports may be concealing another
record. The lowest barometric pressure reading at BHM during the storm was
29.14 inches. But, there are those incomplete METAR reports. We are not
sure what the record is, or was. Rest assured, our crack research crack is
on the case. There is no truth to the rumor that it is a conspiracy by old
school weather historians who do not want to see the ancient records broken.

MORE ABOUT THE 1926 HURRICANE: The 1926 Hurricane devastated Miami during
the early morning hours of September 18th. Fifty miles west of Miami the
residents around Lake Okeechobee were worried. The Lake was at a very high
level after a summer of heavy rains. Through the night of the 17th, men
worked to shore up the mud dike around the southern end of the Lake. As the
hurricane passed south of the Lake during the morning hours, easterly winds
of up to 100 mph piled water up against the western end of the Lake around
the town of Moore Haven. Waves crashed over the four foot high mud dike,
weakening the levee. The dike collapsed in several place, sending water
over the first floor of most homes and buildings. 250 people died around
the Lake. The disaster would be a prelude of an even greater disaster to
come two years later.

A PLEASANT GOODBYE TO IVAN: He was a monster. He trashed most of the state.
He literally took a path all the way across the state from the SW corner
east of Mobile to the NE corner. His remnants were centered along the
Tennessee-North Carolina border this afternoon. There are some indications
that the center will stall and possibly work its way back down toward us. If
it does, he will bring us a chance of showers Monday, but no comparison to
what we had yesterday. Another cold front will move through Monday morning
and bring us good weather again for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, this weekend looks like a textbook example of comfortable weather
with mostly sunshine, lower humidity and cooler nights. We expect
temperatures to be in the mid 50s when you wake up Sunday morning. We don't
see any unusually warm weather for the next five days with highs mostly in
the mid 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Ideal weather for tonight's high school games.
Temperatures by kick off will be around 75. For Saturday's college games in
the state: sunny dry weather, less humid with afternoon highs in the mid
80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Jeanne should become a hurricane late
Saturday as she travels NW passing mostly north of the Bahamas. A ridge of
high pressure is expected to push down the Atlantic coast and turn her
inward. This means she could make landfall on the Atlantic coast of Florida
or the Georgia coast on Wednesday-possibly between Daytona and Savannah.

That forecast is tentative...a few more notes on Ivan. One of the highest
wind gusts that we noted was 78 mph in Greensboro. That was estimated, but
it may be close to accurate considering the damages. At Birmingham Airport,
the peak gust was 54 mph, but it was surely much higher on some of the
ridges around the city considering how many trees were uprooted. Flash
flooding became a problem in many areas and there was a number of water
rescues. Here is a short sample of some 24-hour rainfall amounts. We will
have more in coming days:

7.65 inches at Pell City
7.52 at Greystone Farms
8.04 at Trussville-Leeds
A retired NWS employee, Harold Quattlebaum, reported 8.60 inches at his home
in Hoover.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never in my life have I been greeted so warmly
as I was by little Miss Molly when I got home last night. I had been down at
the ABC 33/40 studios doing almost continuous radio broadcasts since
Wednesday afternoon-36 hours without a wink of sleep. When I got home, Miss
Molly jumped up and down like a ping-pong ball as high as my chest wanting
me to hold her. She never let me out of her sight the rest of the evening.
She curled up as close to me as she could get when went to bed. But, she got
me up at 3:15 this morning wanting me to play and wanted to go for a walk.
It felt good to be out at an early hour with a stiff tropical breeze
blowing in our face. Life goes on, sleep or no sleep.

...Goodbye and Good Riddance!...

GOOD MORNING! A friend asked me this morning whose bright idea it was to
name hurricanes after Russian Tsars. I thought, wait a minute, I know Ivan
was a Tsar, but wasn't Frederic a Prussian King? Well, a quick trip back to
the World History book revealed that my friend's question had to be
modified slightly to make it correct. Whose bright idea was it to name
hurricanes after despots? And actually Frederick the Great had a "k" at
the end of his name, but I would have to say 1979's Hurricane Frederic and
2004's Hurricane Ivan were both evil despots...

IVAN A HISTORIC STORM: Whoever coined the name Ivan the Terrible for the
ninth named tropical cyclone of the 2004 North Atlantic Hurricane Season
knew what they were doing. Ivan went down into the record books for a
number of reasons. It ranks as the sixth strongest Atlantic tropical
cyclone on record. It also holds the distinction for creating the worst
electrical outage in the history of the state of Alabama, snatching the
record from Opal.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR IVAN: We would like to be saying goodbye and good
riddance, but it might be bit too early. Ivan may have a few tricks in his
bag. Ivan should continue to weaken slowly, but still may be a tropical
storm by the time you read this. Now Ivan is expected to slow his forward
progress during the next couple of days, and it will move rather slowly over
the Tennessee/North Carolina border and then might turn southeastward
into...South Carolina? Might be a traffic jam as Jeanne approaches the
South Carolina coast next week. What's next? Don't ask.

OUR WEATHER Our weather should be on an upward incline. Any cloudiness or
leftover light rain should give way to increasing sunshine later today.
Northwesterly winds on the backside of Ivan will give us some cooler,
slightly drier Continental air for the weekend. It would be perfect
football weather Friday night...if there were gong to be any football games.
Another Ivan legacy...its proximity may keep it a little breezy over the
weekend.
