GOOD AFTERNOON: Did you know that today marks the beginning of solar summer? Not astronomical summer, which occurs on June 21st. Solar summer is the three month part of the year when maximum solar radiation occurs. It is actually centered on June 21st, the Summer Solstice. High pressure is centered over the Deep South this afternoon. That high pressure will keep a tentative hold on our weather for the next few days. Tonight will be very pleasant, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Overnight lows will drop into the middle and upper 50s. There could be a little patchy fog around during the late night and early morning hours, but it won’t pose a problem.

MOTHER’S DAY FORECAST: As you get ready to do something special for your mom tomorrow, you will at least have nice weather for the occasion. Skies will be mostly sunny again with just a few scattered clouds High temperature readings tomorrow will reach 80 degrees.

WEEK AHEAD: An upper level trough will begin to approach Alabama from the west by Monday, bringing back a chance of showers late Monday night. Showers and perhaps a storm will affect us on Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday. High pressure aloft will build in Thursday, but low level flow will continue out of the south, keeping moisture levels high. We will see a more summerlike pattern into the weekend, with partly cloudy, warm and humid conditions along with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms possible.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Beautiful weather in Louisville for today’s 131st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Different story in New England, where an intensifying nor’easter is bringing high winds and driving rains to the Northeast today. A coastal flood warning is in effect for eastern Massachusetts and Nantucket, where a moderate coastal flood event is expected this afternoon and tonight. Wind advisories are also in effect, except for Cape Cod and Nantucket, where a high wind warning is in effect for sustained winds over 40 mph and occasional gusts over 60 mph. Winter weather advisories are in effect above 8500 in northern Colorado, including Vail Pass, where over a foot of snow is expected through tonight. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for part of Wyoming. Severe weather is possible over a wide area today from the northern Plains southward to Texas today, but it is not expected to be widespread.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An afternoon of heavy rain caused flooding in the Birmingham area. Persistent thunderstorms dumped an official 5.71 inches on the airport between noon and 6 p.m., but the heaviest rainfall total came from Trussville, on the northeast side of the city, where over nine inches fell. Flooding was severe from Fultondale to Roebuck to the Trussville area, where water entering several businesses and overrunning the waste water treatment plant, dumping raw sewage into the Cahaba River. The Trussville City Hall was surrounded by water and eleven police cars were underwater. Over 2,000 cars were destroyed by the flooding in the Birmingham area.

...A May Warm Up Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! It has been a little chilly over much of the United States for the past week. Did you know that nearly one hundred record lows were recorded across the nation Tuesday? That is a significant number. The mercury disappointed us a little even yesterday, as high temperature readings fell a few degrees short of their prognosticated levels across the area. But it was a nice day...

OK, SO WHERE’S MY WARMUP? Patience, my dear. You will start to feel it today. Highs across Central Alabama will warm into the upper 70s, with a few select locations hitting 80 degrees. The warmth will be accompanied by copious amounts of strong early May sunshine. Under mostly clear skies tonight, lows will drop into the upper 50s in most locations. Might notice a little patchy fog again early tomorrow.

FORECAST FOR MOM: Mother’s Day 2005 should feature more beautiful weather. Skies will be mostly sunny again, with just a few scattered clouds developing with the heating of the day. Temperatures will rise to around 80 degrees. Perfect!

BACK INTO THE WORK WEEK: High pressure is strung over the northern Gulf, across Florida and into the Atlantic this morning. By Monday, it should slide just far enough east to allow moisture levels to start increasing. In addition, low pressure over the Dakotas will be pushing across the Plains. The combined effects of these features may give us a slight chance of a shower overnight Monday night and a chance of a shower or storm on Tuesday, and to a lesser extent on Wednesday. The front should wash out enough by Thursday to place Alabama in a soupy, summer like pattern. We will break out the “scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” moniker for forecasts by the end of the week. Te mercury will slide above seasonal levels by Thursday and Friday, with readings reaching the mid to upper 80s. Some locations could even see 90. That chance of scattered showers and storms will continue into the weekend, but no washout.

ALABAMA WARMING UP: The first five days of May averaged 9 degrees cooler than normal across Central Alabama, but that pattern is about to change. We expect dry weather all the way through the weekend and possibly most of Monday. A few showers or thunderstorms will show up Monday night with a slightly better chance later Tuesday and Tuesday night. Starting tomorrow our high temperatures will top out between 80 and 82 into early next week. There are indications that we could easily see some mid 80s by the middle of next week. No measurable rain so far in May in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. We’re supposed to get close to 5 inches of rain during the month of May. I think we can also not worry any more about frost. It has never been below 37 this late in the season.

MOM’S DAY: If you ordered Mother’s Day weather out of the weather catalog, it couldn’t be any better. About 82 for a high and almost all sunshine. I will never forget Mother’s Day about 10 years ago. A group of us migrated to a restaurant after church and I was asked to say the blessing. I was caught by surprise and mumbled something like “we are truly thankful for mothers because without mothers this world would be in a terrible shape.” Everybody at my table and for several tables around burst out laughing before I said “amen.” Then I realized that without mothers we would not be here. They still haven’t let me forget.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Excellent. Mostly sunshine with highs around 78. The water temperature is still a bit cool around 71.

AMBITIOUS COASTAL STORM: It was moving up the Atlantic Seaboard today. It is equal in strength to a tropical storm. A Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory was in effect. Winds will gust near 60 mph offshore and will push water over the Sound side of the Outer Banks south of Hatteras with water levels of around 4-feet deep. Along and offshore, Diamond Shoals, North Carolina was reporting 13-foot swells and 17-foot waves. Cape Lookout had gusts to 52 mph. The storm will continue northward near the coast giving New York City and Boston a miserable time over the weekend.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: It happened near Salt Lake yesterday. Lightning struck an automobile during rush hour and knocked two huge holes in the windshield. The driver was not seriously injured. Automobiles are not totally immune to lightning despite the myth that the tires insulate them. The main safety if you’re in an automobile is that most lightning bolts will pass harmlessly through the metal part of the body. That’s why it’s important not to touch metal objects like door handles.

USA NOTES: Coolest in Alabama this morning was DeSoto State Park with 41...coolest nationwide, 24, Berlin, New Hampshire...hottest Monday 96 at Gila Bend located on a sharp bend in the Gila River SW of Phoenix.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little Miss Molly already had a name when she strolled into our living area almost three years ago. Otherwise, I would have named her “Lightning.” She seems as fast as a bolt of lightning and zigzags just as much when we’re out walking. I feel sure every half-mile walk equals at least one mile...we used to have a neighbor (dog, that is) named Grady. He was a 90-pound black lab and he would only bark one time when we passed by. His bark would almost rattle the windows and I have seen Molly clear the ground numerous times. I nicknamed him “Thunder.“ I surprised Molly this morning. I was standing in the living area with my arm full of toys ready to play ball as she crawled out of bed yawning. She sure seemed surprised but very pleased. Life goes on.

...A Very Nice Weekend Ahead...

Get set for a very nice Mothers Day weekend. We expect no rain through
Sunday, with lots of sunshine on a daily basis and a nice day to day warming
trend. We should wind up in the mid 70s today, and near 80 both tomorrow and
Sunday.

NEXT RAIN: We will introduce the chance of showers and possibly a
thunderstorm Monday night and Tuesday of next week thanks to a weakening
cold front trying to push into Alabama. The front should become stationary,
washing out by Wednesday. The models are then suggesting we might see the
warmest weather so far this year by Thursday of next week with temperatures
reaching the mid 80s along with fairly high humidity levels, more like
summertime.

THE LONG RANGE: The models are now hinting at a relatively wet period for
the state in the May 13-16 time frame as deep moisture moves in from the
south, and an upper air low forms to the northwest.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: Most everyone west of I-65 saw no rain at all yesterday,
and generally speaking amounts over east Alabama were quite light. However,
there were a few heavier showers over the eastern side of the state; rain
totals included 1.45" at Alpine (in Talladega county) .66" at the Neely
Henry Dam near Ohatchee and Ragland, .53" at Steele, .43" at Ashville, and
.35" at Jacksonville. Evening thunderstorms dropped pea sized hail in
Autauga co.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Phoenix,
AZ with 95 degrees. Tallahassee, FL measured 1.24" of rain, while
Charleston, SC reported 1.14" Paducah, KY dropped to 40 degrees early
yesterday, tying the record low for the date. Pittsburgh, PA also tied their
record low with 32 degrees.

MOTHERS WILL LIKE THEIR SPECIAL DAY: Doubt if we get any complaints about
weekend weather. It should be dry with a lot of sunshine Friday, Saturday
and Sunday and by the weekend that old rusty thermometer on the back porch
should be around 80. I think all the moms will enjoy their special day on
Sunday.

Backing up to today, you could take your choice of weather across the state.
At midday, it was only 55 degrees in Gadsden and Ft. Payne, 65 in Birmingham
and 73 in Tuscaloosa. The difference was caused by a disturbance at the
surface moving slowly west while an upper trough moved eastward overhead.
Net result: showers and some thunderstorms visited NE and East-Central
Alabama, while from Birmingham westward only a few sprinkles at best. It is
estimated that 2 inches of rain or more fell in just a few hours over parts
of Etowah and St. Clair Counties.

There could be a few leftover showers near the Georgia border at nightfall,
but most of the area will be dry.

AN ALARMING SURVEY: A new survey by the Mason-Dixon Poll agrees with a
report by the National Hurricane Center, the Salvation Army and the National
Association of Emergency Managers that coastal residents are dangerously
unprepared for big tropical storms and hurricanes. The survey said that one
in five residents, from the Texas coast all the way around to Maine, would
stay home in case of a hurricane. One in three said they would wait until
an actual Hurricane Warning to start protecting their property. That's a bit
scary.

PROWLING THE COUNTRYSIDE: 100 in Death Valley yesterday, but showers and
storms will be rather numerous today and Friday with highs only 88...more
heavy rain over Southern California...USA cold spot this morning was Saranac
Lake, New York with 20...Jeff Foxworthy once joked that if you're proud that
your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Saranac Lake
has the lowest temperature in the country, you must live in Upstate New
York!

AN INCREDIBLE HAILSTORM: It was on May 5, 1995 in the Dallas-Ft. Worth
area. 510 people were injured (mostly from hail), another 21 persons died
(mostly from flash flooding), thousands were caught outside at the annual
Mayfest Celebration. Damage in excess of $1.5 billion! Yes, that's with the
letter "B."

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I love to coin new words, so I'm going to do
one today-caninechologist...don't know about the spelling. I have never had
the blues (as we called it in Havana Junction), but if I did, my little Miss
Molly would find a way to cure me right away...even when I am exhausted she
makes me laugh and I simply pick her up and cuddle. We had an early morning
walk. At the far end of the walking track, there is a street. I could see
the very tip of a little redbird walking down the gutter pecking away.
Little Miss Molly sneaked up on him like she was treeing a bird, leaped and
tried to land on the poor little guy. He took off like a rocket and little
Miss Molly landed in the loose slag...seems like a whole family of cardinals
has moved in to the upper part of the track across from the Old Crow Motel
and along the Old Crow Creek. That little kindergarten bird sure learned his
lesson...got a big laugh from an e-mail from a lady in Gardendale. She has
two dogs that she calls "the girls." One weighs 10 pounds and thinks she is
a doberman; the other weighs 85 pounds and wants to be a lap dog...the lady
says they keep her laughing. Life goes on.

...Clouds But Not Much Rain...

An upper air trough will swing through Alabama today, and will bring some
clouds but not much rain. Low level moisture is extremely limited; most
communities west of I-65 will see no rain at all, and over the eastern side
of the state a little light rain or a few sprinkles are possible. Most spots
will not have enough rain to settle the dust. The sky will clear tonight as
the trough moves on to the east.

WARMER DAYS: Sunshine returns tomorrow as a nice warming trend begins. We
should be in the mid 70s tomorrow, and then close to 80 by Saturday and
Sunday afternoon with a good deal of sunshine each day.

NEXT WEEK: The longer range computer models suggest the next opportunity of
rain will come around Tuesday of next week as a weakening cold front moves
into Alabama. The best upper air support will pass north of the state, but a
few showers and storms will be possible.

MORE DAMAGE REPORTS: NWS survey teams report more damage from the pre-dawn
storms this past Saturday morning, April 30. Trees and power lines were
blown down in Marengo county near Myrtlewood and Linden; the damage was
determined to be from straight line winds between 4:45 and 5:30 a.m. A total
of seven tornadoes were confirmed during the event in other parts of the
state; all F0 or F1.

AIR QUALITY: A code yellow forecast for the Birmingham metro area today;
meaning air quality is expected to be moderate. The pollutant is
particulates, not ozone. Most of our ground level ozone problems come along
during the summer heat in June, July, and August.

TRIPLE DIGITS: Hot spot in the nation yesterday with Death Valley, CA with
100.

A WARMING TREND: Another chilly morning across Alabama. There was even a
little scattered light frost at Black Creek in NE Etowah County. The last 11
days in that area had an average low of 39.5-nearly 14 degrees below normal.
Let's look at a few lows:

35 in Valley Head and Black Creek
36 in Ft. Payne
37 in Cullman, Hartselle and Hamilton
38 in Wedowee, Talladega, Ashland, Pinson
39 in Gadsden, Leeds, Meridianville

Most other lows were between 40 and 47. There is a complete list of the lows
on the 33/40 weather blog.

It won't be quite as cool tonight. Finally, the daytimes will start warming
up by Friday and we should be around 80 or better for Saturday and Sunday
with near total sunshine. The only small fly in the ointment is a slight
chance of some scattered light rain Thursday. A better chance of that will
be across East Alabama.

EVER HEARD OF A SNOWBOW? An interesting note from Tom Randall, a long-time
East Birmingham postman. He gave permission to use his account of a strange
occurrence in the North Carolina mountains. Excerpts from his note: "My wife
and I were celebrating our anniversary at the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge
Parkway April 27-about 5,000 feet elevation. As we were leaving our room for
dinner at the restaurant, it started snowing with winds of about 25-30 mph.
Everything was falling sideways. Moments after the snow began, a rainbow (a
snowbow) appeared. One of the most vivid that I have ever seen. During our
dinner it appeared again and caused considerable excitement and a lot of
conversation among the staff and diners. I could not detect any liquid
precipitation at all. It was truly spectacular. Did we witness something
truly unusual?" (Anybody else ever seen this?)

INCOMPLETE SENTENCES: 98 in Death Valley yesterday...19 in Big Rapids,
Michigan this morning...11 at Point Lay, Alaska...how's this for a quick
recovery? It was a record low of 10 in Williston, North Dakota yesterday
morning, but they will have 74 this afternoon-a 64-degree warm up in about
38 hours!...3 inches of rain in Miami Beach...how would you like to have
been in Monroe, Louisiana on this date in 1989 when hail the size of oranges
damaged thousands of cars and they were drenched with over 9 inches of rain?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It seems clear what I'm going to give little
Miss Molly for Christmas. I will wrap up a human shoe and let her go at it.
I always get completely dressed as soon as my feet hit the floor, but
sometimes I have a cup of coffee before putting on my shoes. You guessed
it...during that short time little Miss Molly dissected my semi-upscale
$29.99 shoes. The shoelaces are real tight, but she managed to completely
take them out and dig out the innersoles. I had to buy new laces. Shoes are
totally irresistible to her. I scolded her, but did not spank her on advice
of our readers. She slithered away and hid in one of her severe weather
safety hideouts. She no longer bothers my upscale pillow. I guess she is
evolving to more interesting things. We don't dare leave a pen or pencil
where she can get it. She can't resist those either. On a 10:30 walk last
night, we jumped another rabbit. That community rabbit (CR) knows by now how
to take off like a rocket and dive into the underbrush. I get jerked around
and last night I dropped the little blue scoop and flashlight. Life goes on.

...Tranquil Weather Continues...

A rather uneventful weather pattern will continue across Alabama and the
deep south for the next seven to ten days. Today will be dry and cool again
with a mix of sun and clouds; temperatures will remain well below normal for
early May.

A trough in the upper atmosphere will bring an increase in clouds to the
state tonight, and it might squeeze out a little light rain or a few
sprinkles during the day tomorrow. Moisture will be very limited, and most
communities won't get enough rain to settle the dust. Sunshine returns on
Friday as warming trend begins.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this point the weather looks excellent for the weekend;
lots of sunshine on both days with warmer afternoons. We should reach the
upper 70s on Saturday, and low 80s by Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The main rain producing systems should remain west and north of
Alabama as an upper air ridge holds in place over the southeast U.S. In
fact, some of the computer models suggest it will be about 10 to 12 days
before another major rain event returns to Alabama.

ANOTHER TORNADO: National Weather Service survey teams have discovered yet
another tornado track from severe storms this past Saturday morning. An F1
tornado was on the ground for 16 miles through the general area where Clay,
Randolph, Tallapoosa, and Chambers counties come together. Three brick
buildings were heavily damaged in downtown Wadley. Most of the damage along
the track involved downed trees. In all, seven tornadoes have been confirmed
during the pre-dawn severe weather outbreak.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year is now 17.11", still
almost four inches below normal (3.97").

MORE TRANQUIL WEATHER: It can be awfully stormy in Alabama in May. In
Montgomery 21 years ago today, a powerful tornado killed 5 persons and
injured 37. We hardly expect any rain over the next week. A weak
disturbances speeding along in the upper atmosphere along with a weak
disturbance east of Alabama, could bring just a little scattered light rain
Thursday. After that back to mostly sunny dry weather all the way through
the weekend. A patch of light rain moved east across South Alabama today.

Most of it was evaporating in the dry air before reaching the ground.
It was chilly across the state again this morning. It was mostly in the 40s,
but as low as 39 in Pinson and Ft. Payne. Our temperatures are still running
about 10 degrees cooler than normal for the first week of May, but look for
milder temperatures by the weekend with near 80 by Saturday.

NEW BIRMINGHAM WEATHER CHIEF: Jim Stefkovich will go on duty tomorrow at
the National Weather Service Forecast Office at Shelby County Airport as
Birmingham's new Meteorologist in Charge. He comes from a similar position
with the NWS in Chicago, but he has a long track record of experiencing SE
USA weather. He replaces Ken Graham who was promoted to the Southern Region
Headquarters in Ft. Worth. Lot more about this is posted on our 33/40
weather blog.

DISCONNECTED THOUGHTS: I thought it was interesting that there was a
200-degree difference in temperature overnight between Death Valley,
California and Vostok, Antarctica. It was 96 in Death Valley and a "chilly"
104 below zero at Vostok. Their wind chill was 132 below! Not a good day to
hang out the wash, have a picnic or walk the dog...coldest in the USA this
morning, 10 at Williston, North Dakota and Wolf Point out on the open windy
plains of NE Montana...Pensacola's amazing 44.54 inches of rain so far this
year contrasts sharply with only 15.03 inches at this time last
year...Sinbad the Sailor was killed by lightning at Kanab, Utah on this date
in 1982. If that name is not familiar, it was the name of President Reagan's
star TV horse in "Death Valley Days"...an amazing 4.7 inches of snow at
Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle yesterday bringing their season's total to
40 inches, 23 inches more than normal!

A FAMILY TRAGEDY: A violent tornado hit Sioux City, Iowa on May 3, 1895,
wiping out two schools several miles apart killing teachers and students. A
teacher killed in the first school was a brother of a teacher killed in the
second school.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Up automatically at 5:30 a.m.-I don't set a
clock. I tippy-toed, but little Miss Molly saw me, stood up in bed,
stretched, yawned and moaned and 45 seconds later was assembling toys
expecting me to play... I begged for a few drops of coffee, but it was not
to be. We took off on a half-mile walk. An old crow was sitting high up in
the Old Crow Motel silhouetted by a wanna-be sunrise and I'm almost positive
he was yawning. The sun ball was also yawning and stretching wanting to come
up. It sure did make a deck of high cirrus clouds look beautiful. Halfway up
the walk, Molly stopped suddenly like she had treed a bird. It puzzled me,
but all of a sudden that big, black neighborhood dog came rushing out of the
underbrush and dived at Molly wanting to play. Molly was literally climbing
up my leg for protection. I grabbed her and carried her all the way back
home nestled in my arms. She sure did appreciate it. Life goes on often
through scary times.

...Cool and Dry Weather...

A rather benign weather pattern will continue across Alabama for the next
seven to ten days. No heavy rain events, no severe weather. Really little
chance of any thunder and lightning, and some spots will get no rain at all.

The main highlight today is the unseasonably cool temperatures; temperatures
will remain a good ten degrees below normal for early May; most places won't
see 70 today. We will have a few cloudy periods, but we won't mention any
rain since the low level air is do dry.

REST OF THE WEEK: A weak surface low pressure center should form in the
northern Gulf later in the week, but most of the deep moisture will stay
over south Alabama. A few sprinkles are possible Wednesday night and
Thursday, but significant rain at this time looks rather unlikely for the
northern half of the state.

WEEKEND PEEK: At this point the weather looks excellent this weekend, with
ample sunshine and a nice warming trend. We should reach the upper 70s on
Saturday, and low 80s by Sunday. Dry air means no rain.

THE LONGER RANGE: The calm weather pattern seems to stay in place through
mid-month. A few wet periods are possible in the seven to 15 day period, but
we don't see any big chance of severe storms or really heavy rain at this
point.

BAMA TWISTERS: Based on NWS storm surveys, at least six tornadoes touched
down this past Saturday morning during the pre-dawn hours. Three tornadoes
were rated F1; in Shelby county in Helena and Alabaster, in Walker county
near Union Chapel, and in Lowndes county near White Hall. The other
tornadoes were F0; near Columbiana, Northport, and near Midway down in
Bullock county in southeast Alabama.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Our current temperatures are running about 10 degrees
cooler than normal for early May and there's not going to be a major warm up
for the next several days. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday should fail to reach
70, then it will warm up a few degrees on Thursday and Friday. Lows at night
will be mostly in the 40s.

Now about the rain. Little or no indication of significant rain all week. We
could see some scattered light rain at some point Thursday and extending
into Friday morning. There could even be a few sprinkles on Wednesday. We
think the total for all of this should be less than 1/10 of an inch. It is
also a rather indefinite situation. That risk of rain is based on a minor
disturbance aloft approaching from the west.

In a month or so we are going to be suffering with daily highs in the 90s
and lows only in the 70s, so maybe we should celebrate some of those low
temperatures we had this morning. It almost got down to freezing in DeSoto
State Park in extreme NE Alabama. Samples:

33 in DeSoto State Park
35 in Valley Head
36 in Ft. Payne and Hartselle
37 in Talladega and Hazel Green
38 in Grove Oak
39 in Pinson and Hamilton
40 in Scottsboro and Centreville
41 in Cullman and Alexander City
42 in Decatur, Anniston and Jasper
43 in Huntsville and Helena
44 in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa

But, if you really, really want to see something cold, it was 99 below zero
this morning at Vostok, Antarctica with a wind chill of 124 below!

STORM POST MORTEM: The NWS has been working hard on storm surveys over the
weekend and several tornadoes have been confirmed. In a statement late this
morning, the NWS upgraded a Shelby County tornado to an F1 instead of an F0.
This is the one that affected the Helena, Pelham, Alabaster and Chelsea
areas early Saturday morning. It first touched down just west of County Road
93 in Helena. It moved east crossing County Roads 17, 58 and US 31 and I-65
and County Road 11 before ending near County Road 39. The path was a little
over 11 miles long and 100 yards wide at its widest point. It was on the
ground from about 5:04 to 5:18 a.m. Several subdivisions were affected,
including Braelinn Village, Autumn Ridge, Navajo Hills, Amberley Woods and
Port South. Numerous homes in those areas had shingle and roof damage and
broken windows. Numerous trees were down. See our weather blog for more
information on other tornadoes and storms.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After ignoring little Miss Molly during the
severe weather, I tried to make it up to her Saturday and Sunday. When the
first distant sound of thunder occurred Friday night, the little girl came
walking slowly into my weather office and got under my desk. Her sleeping
hours were all mixed up. At least we enjoyed two rabbit chases on our walks.
I believe she gets far more excited about a rabbit than our community cat. I
usually run as fast as my little legs will carry me when we are chasing
rabbits. Life goes on.

...Good Looking Monday...

GOOD MORNING: After a refreshing overnight and a beautiful race Sunday,
more nice conditions are on tap for today here in Central Alabama. The
midweek forecast is a little iffy, but the upcoming weekend looks really
nice.

EARLY WEEK FORECAST: A huge ridge of high pressure extends all the way from
Alberta in western Canada down across the Plains and into Alabama. This
cool high pressure is giving us our current spate of fine weather. We had
been hinting at a slight chance of showers overnight tonight and on Tuesday,
but that looks unlikely at this time. I guess we can't rule out an isolated
shower, but chances are rather low. Skies will be partly cloudy today and
Tuesday, but they may be briefly cloudy tomorrow morning.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: The uncertain factor is the development of a low in the
western Gulf by midweek. The GFS has shown this feature consistently for
several runs. The track of the low will determine how much rain falls in
Central Alabama. A more northerly track might bring heavy amounts into
South and Southeast Alabama Thursday. For now, amounts look light.

BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND IN STORE: High pressure will build in starting on Friday,
with clearing skies. Partly cloudy and warm weather will prevail all
weekend. Highs might make the middle 80s Saturday and Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Devastating flash flooding struck the Tug Fork River
that separates Kentucky and West Virginia for the second time in ten months.
The river crested 20 feet above normal after heavy rains fell during a short
time period on the mountainous region. At least six people died in the
resultant flooding. Several counties in West Virginia were declared
disaster areas. 375 homes and 30 businesses were damage din Pike County KY
along with hundreds left homeless. 100 homes were damaged in Hurley VA.

Many people had to be rescued. In Fort Gay WV, thousands were left without
water after millions of gallons of coal waste spilled into the town's
drinking supply, the third such occurrence in just three years.

GOOD AFTERNOON: May is my absolute favorite month. A lot of it has to do
with the fact that it is Spring, and Spring is my absolute favorite season.
Everything is green. Temperatures are warm, but still not overpowering hot.
Nights are still comfortable. The beginning of the month features
temperatures that are right in my perfect range (78 for highs and 53 for
lows.) By the end of the month, the average high will be 84 and the average
low 62. The highest temperature ever recorded in Birmingham in May is 99,
on May 28, 1962 and May 29, 1898. The coldest that it has ever been in May
is 35 on May 4, 1971. May is tied with October as our sunniest month, with
66% of possible sunshine on average. We average 6.9 thunderstorm days and
nearly two days with temperatures above 90F. We average 4.83 inches of rain
during the month. 11.10 inches of rain fell in May 1969.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will be cooler than normal tonight thanks to
sprawling high pressure over the Central Plains. With diminishing winds and
clear skies, readings will bottom out in the middle 40s overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: I have to say upfront that this is a low confidence
forecast. It is difficult to put your fingers on the specific players in
the weather for the week ahead and what their impacts will be. But here
goes anyway:

Monday should be a partly cloudy day as our winds remain out of the north.
High level moisture from showers and thunderstorms to the west of Alabama
will blow across in a westerly upper wind flow, giving us increased clouds.
There could even be a sprinkle or light shower toward morning on Tuesday.

Those slight shower chances will stay with us through the day on Tuesday. A
series of upper level disturbances will ripple across the area in the
Wednesday, perhaps shaking out a few showers from time to time. There could
be a thunderstorm mixed in, but instability prospects look limited, so that
probability is not too high. Low pressure develops over the western Gulf
and migrates eastward, increasing our rain chances on Thursday. Rain
chances and amounts will be highest south and east sections.

Showers should depart early on Friday as the low scoots to our south and
east. This will set the stage for a nice weekend, with dry and mild
conditions prevailing. We will see highs near 80 again by Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1868: Cleveland Abbe, Director of the Cincinnati
Astronomical Observatory hoped that he would help his facility achieve a
place among the great observatories of the world by providing weather
forecasts to the public. His goal was to establish a network of weather
observers like the one instituted by Joseph Henry of the Smithsonian
Institution and use their information for provide three days advance notice
of approaching weather systems and 6 hours notice of severe storms. On this
date he addressed his staff with his vision. Abbe would issue his first
forecast on September 2 1869. He would continue issuing the Daily Weather
Bulletin for three months as an experiment. Weather forecasting the United
States was born.

...Race Day at 'Dega...

GOOD MORNING! Earlier in the week, I was afraid that today was going to be
a wet day. Afraid because it would have presented problems for the state's
biggest sporting event. Of course, the local hotels would have enjoyed
another day of out of town guests who fill every room from Tuscaloosa to
Huntsville, and Meridian to Bremen, Georgia. But not to worry, fabulous
weather in on deck for today's race. Skies will be sunny, with just a few
scattered clouds forming during the afternoon.

Temperatures will be a little on the cool side with a noticeable north
breeze. The coolness will mask the strength of the early May sun, so keep
the sunscreen handy.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will fall into the comfortable middle 40s overnight
tonight. Makes for great sleeping weather, so throw open those windows.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Temperatures will fall into the comfortable middle 40s
overnight tonight. Makes for great sleeping weather. Tomorrow should
feature partly cloudy skies and slightly warmer afternoon readings. The
approach of a weak front Monday night will re-introduce shower chances,
lasting into Tuesday. A low will develop in the Gulf and move eastward,
increasing our rain chances on Wednesday, continuing on Thursday. High
pressure will build in from the west on Friday, spelling nice weekend
weather.

PENSACOLA RAINFALL: Pensacola set a daily record for rainfall on Saturday
as 3.13 inches fell. I really thought that I was looking at a typo when I
saw the amount of rainfall that has fallen in the month. 24.44 inches of
rain has fallen there in April. That's right. Nearly 25 inches of rain in
one month. The total for the year is now at 44.52, over 71% of the average
annual rainfall of 62.25 inches. I think the all time monthly record in the
city is 20.36, set in July 1979, so this month may be a record. Amazing.

ON THIS DATE IN 1933: A very destructive F4 tornado struck Minden LA.
Twenty weight people died in the tornado that reportedly sounded like "mad
lions on a speeding train."
