THE ALABAMA STORY: Our current temperatures are running about 10 degrees
cooler than normal for early May and there's not going to be a major warm up
for the next several days. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday should fail to reach
70, then it will warm up a few degrees on Thursday and Friday. Lows at night
will be mostly in the 40s.

Now about the rain. Little or no indication of significant rain all week. We
could see some scattered light rain at some point Thursday and extending
into Friday morning. There could even be a few sprinkles on Wednesday. We
think the total for all of this should be less than 1/10 of an inch. It is
also a rather indefinite situation. That risk of rain is based on a minor
disturbance aloft approaching from the west.

In a month or so we are going to be suffering with daily highs in the 90s
and lows only in the 70s, so maybe we should celebrate some of those low
temperatures we had this morning. It almost got down to freezing in DeSoto
State Park in extreme NE Alabama. Samples:

33 in DeSoto State Park
35 in Valley Head
36 in Ft. Payne and Hartselle
37 in Talladega and Hazel Green
38 in Grove Oak
39 in Pinson and Hamilton
40 in Scottsboro and Centreville
41 in Cullman and Alexander City
42 in Decatur, Anniston and Jasper
43 in Huntsville and Helena
44 in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa

But, if you really, really want to see something cold, it was 99 below zero
this morning at Vostok, Antarctica with a wind chill of 124 below!

STORM POST MORTEM: The NWS has been working hard on storm surveys over the
weekend and several tornadoes have been confirmed. In a statement late this
morning, the NWS upgraded a Shelby County tornado to an F1 instead of an F0.
This is the one that affected the Helena, Pelham, Alabaster and Chelsea
areas early Saturday morning. It first touched down just west of County Road
93 in Helena. It moved east crossing County Roads 17, 58 and US 31 and I-65
and County Road 11 before ending near County Road 39. The path was a little
over 11 miles long and 100 yards wide at its widest point. It was on the
ground from about 5:04 to 5:18 a.m. Several subdivisions were affected,
including Braelinn Village, Autumn Ridge, Navajo Hills, Amberley Woods and
Port South. Numerous homes in those areas had shingle and roof damage and
broken windows. Numerous trees were down. See our weather blog for more
information on other tornadoes and storms.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After ignoring little Miss Molly during the
severe weather, I tried to make it up to her Saturday and Sunday. When the
first distant sound of thunder occurred Friday night, the little girl came
walking slowly into my weather office and got under my desk. Her sleeping
hours were all mixed up. At least we enjoyed two rabbit chases on our walks.
I believe she gets far more excited about a rabbit than our community cat. I
usually run as fast as my little legs will carry me when we are chasing
rabbits. Life goes on.
