MOTHERS WILL LIKE THEIR SPECIAL DAY: Doubt if we get any complaints about
weekend weather. It should be dry with a lot of sunshine Friday, Saturday
and Sunday and by the weekend that old rusty thermometer on the back porch
should be around 80. I think all the moms will enjoy their special day on
Sunday.
Backing up to today, you could take your choice of weather across the state.
At midday, it was only 55 degrees in Gadsden and Ft. Payne, 65 in Birmingham
and 73 in Tuscaloosa. The difference was caused by a disturbance at the
surface moving slowly west while an upper trough moved eastward overhead.
Net result: showers and some thunderstorms visited NE and East-Central
Alabama, while from Birmingham westward only a few sprinkles at best. It is
estimated that 2 inches of rain or more fell in just a few hours over parts
of Etowah and St. Clair Counties.
There could be a few leftover showers near the Georgia border at nightfall,
but most of the area will be dry.
AN ALARMING SURVEY: A new survey by the Mason-Dixon Poll agrees with a
report by the National Hurricane Center, the Salvation Army and the National
Association of Emergency Managers that coastal residents are dangerously
unprepared for big tropical storms and hurricanes. The survey said that one
in five residents, from the Texas coast all the way around to Maine, would
stay home in case of a hurricane. One in three said they would wait until
an actual Hurricane Warning to start protecting their property. That's a bit
scary.
PROWLING THE COUNTRYSIDE: 100 in Death Valley yesterday, but showers and
storms will be rather numerous today and Friday with highs only 88...more
heavy rain over Southern California...USA cold spot this morning was Saranac
Lake, New York with 20...Jeff Foxworthy once joked that if you're proud that
your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Saranac Lake
has the lowest temperature in the country, you must live in Upstate New
York!
AN INCREDIBLE HAILSTORM: It was on May 5, 1995 in the Dallas-Ft. Worth
area. 510 people were injured (mostly from hail), another 21 persons died
(mostly from flash flooding), thousands were caught outside at the annual
Mayfest Celebration. Damage in excess of $1.5 billion! Yes, that's with the
letter "B."
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I love to coin new words, so I'm going to do
one today-caninechologist...don't know about the spelling. I have never had
the blues (as we called it in Havana Junction), but if I did, my little Miss
Molly would find a way to cure me right away...even when I am exhausted she
makes me laugh and I simply pick her up and cuddle. We had an early morning
walk. At the far end of the walking track, there is a street. I could see
the very tip of a little redbird walking down the gutter pecking away.
Little Miss Molly sneaked up on him like she was treeing a bird, leaped and
tried to land on the poor little guy. He took off like a rocket and little
Miss Molly landed in the loose slag...seems like a whole family of cardinals
has moved in to the upper part of the track across from the Old Crow Motel
and along the Old Crow Creek. That little kindergarten bird sure learned his
lesson...got a big laugh from an e-mail from a lady in Gardendale. She has
two dogs that she calls "the girls." One weighs 10 pounds and thinks she is
a doberman; the other weighs 85 pounds and wants to be a lap dog...the lady
says they keep her laughing. Life goes on.
