GOOD AFTERNOON: May is my absolute favorite month. A lot of it has to do
with the fact that it is Spring, and Spring is my absolute favorite season.
Everything is green. Temperatures are warm, but still not overpowering hot.
Nights are still comfortable. The beginning of the month features
temperatures that are right in my perfect range (78 for highs and 53 for
lows.) By the end of the month, the average high will be 84 and the average
low 62. The highest temperature ever recorded in Birmingham in May is 99,
on May 28, 1962 and May 29, 1898. The coldest that it has ever been in May
is 35 on May 4, 1971. May is tied with October as our sunniest month, with
66% of possible sunshine on average. We average 6.9 thunderstorm days and
nearly two days with temperatures above 90F. We average 4.83 inches of rain
during the month. 11.10 inches of rain fell in May 1969.

TONIGHT: Temperatures will be cooler than normal tonight thanks to
sprawling high pressure over the Central Plains. With diminishing winds and
clear skies, readings will bottom out in the middle 40s overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: I have to say upfront that this is a low confidence
forecast. It is difficult to put your fingers on the specific players in
the weather for the week ahead and what their impacts will be. But here
goes anyway:

Monday should be a partly cloudy day as our winds remain out of the north.
High level moisture from showers and thunderstorms to the west of Alabama
will blow across in a westerly upper wind flow, giving us increased clouds.
There could even be a sprinkle or light shower toward morning on Tuesday.

Those slight shower chances will stay with us through the day on Tuesday. A
series of upper level disturbances will ripple across the area in the
Wednesday, perhaps shaking out a few showers from time to time. There could
be a thunderstorm mixed in, but instability prospects look limited, so that
probability is not too high. Low pressure develops over the western Gulf
and migrates eastward, increasing our rain chances on Thursday. Rain
chances and amounts will be highest south and east sections.

Showers should depart early on Friday as the low scoots to our south and
east. This will set the stage for a nice weekend, with dry and mild
conditions prevailing. We will see highs near 80 again by Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1868: Cleveland Abbe, Director of the Cincinnati
Astronomical Observatory hoped that he would help his facility achieve a
place among the great observatories of the world by providing weather
forecasts to the public. His goal was to establish a network of weather
observers like the one instituted by Joseph Henry of the Smithsonian
Institution and use their information for provide three days advance notice
of approaching weather systems and 6 hours notice of severe storms. On this
date he addressed his staff with his vision. Abbe would issue his first
forecast on September 2 1869. He would continue issuing the Daily Weather
Bulletin for three months as an experiment. Weather forecasting the United
States was born.
