...Strong Storms On Sunday...

A little tongue of cold air aloft rotating through Alabama this
morning produced enhanced instability this morning and showers fired
before 9 a.m. Some of those grew into storms by late morning over
East Alabama. Showers and storms will develop through the afternoon
over much of Alabama and be fairly widespread. Some of the best
chances will be north of US-82, where the cooler air aloft is
located. Storms will feature frequent lightning and very heavy rain.
Could see some gusty winds with the stronger ones.

TONIGHT AND SUNDAY: The GFS did a very good job last night picking
up on this morning's shower development over the eastern half of the
area. The morning run is portraying the same thing for Sunday late
tonight and Sunday morning. Buying into this solution again, we will
chance for a chance of overnight showers into tomorrow morning. Throw
in an approaching front, and Sunday should feature good rain chances.
Storms on Sunday could be strong, and even severe, with damaging winds
possible. Lightning will be a given with any storms that form, and
prolific rains will dump heavy amounts in short periods.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The models still predict this fairly decent front
for July will make it through the area Sunday night, giving us drier
conditions as we start the week. Only isolated storms should be
around on Monday and Tuesday, becoming scattered into Wednesday and
Thursday. We don't see any big rain chances into next weekend.

BERTHA (1996 VERSION): The B storm in 1996 was also Bertha. It was
around for ten days, making it the longest lived July storm up until
that time. 1996 Bertha made landfall on July 12th at Wrightsville
Beach, North Carolina that year as a category 2 hurricane with top
winds of 105 mph. Bertha's did $270 million in damage and killed 12.

BERTHA (2008) VERSION): This year's Bertha is also an early season
Cape Verde hurricane. Bertha 2008 will be the longest lived July
storm in Atlantic history. By tomorrow, it will have been around for
eleven days, beating 1996 Bertha. This afternoon, Bertha was barely
moving, about 200 miles southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane should
start moving slowly to the north, at less than 5 miles per hour. It
should eventually lift out to the northeast by Monday. A tropical
storm warning is in effect for Bermuda where gusts to tropical storm
force winds may occur through Sunday. High seas and riptides are also
a problem there. Top winds are 85 mph. A weakening trend should
begin by Monday.

ACTIVE PERIOD SEEN IN TROPICS: The models have consistently predicted
the development of a tropical storm in the Atlantic this week that
could be near the northern Lesser Antilles by next weekend. This
could be flowed by another Cape Verde type storm the final week of the
month. Stay tuned.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The island of Okushiri in Japan was devastated
by a tsunami created by 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Sea of Japan.
15-30 foot waves started crashing ashore within minutes after the
tremor occurred, sweeping up people, vehicles and buildings. The
maximum wave would be an astounding 90 feet tall! Everything in the
tsunami's path was obliterated. A total of 239 people died. But the
miracle was that the Japan Meteorological Agency's warning was issued
in a timely and effective manner, and a far greater tragedy was averted.

...Scattered Storms Today...

Thunderstorms were not quite as plentiful on Friday across Alabama as
a weak boundary washed out across the state. Temperatures were on the
hot side, fairly typical for July in Alabama. Montgomery was the big
winner in the rainfall department. In fact, they have picked up
nearly four inches in the past two days.

FOR YOUR WEKEEND: Showers and storms should be limited
today across much of Central Alabama, without a true focus for
development. That means partly cloudy skies today, with about a one
in four chance for afternoon and evening showers and storms. Activity
will start to ramp up late tonight, and especially on Sunday as
another front approaches from the north. The models have been
waffling on whether the front would make it into South Alabama. This
forecast is based on this assumption. Showers and storms will be a
good bet on Sunday as the front approaches. By evening, it should be
south of Birmingham. With high preciptable water levels, heavy rain
will be a distinct possibility on Sunday. There could be scattered
severe weather reports also, with the main issue being gusty winds.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Fairly typical summertime weather will
prevail as we head into the new work week. Drier air through Monday
night will allow slightly cooler readings by Tuesday morning. Partly
sunny and hot conditions will prevail through much of the week ahead
with just slight chances of isolated afternoon storms each day.

BERTHA: Hurricane Bertha has been trundling toward
Bermuda for the past couple of days. It is beginning to turn on a
northerly track that will take it away from the island nation. At its
closest approach about 6 p.m.CDT tonight, it will be about 150 miles
ESE of Hamilton, Bermuda. The Bermuda Weather Service maintains a
Tropical Storm Watch. Winds will be increasing and backing around to
the north on the island, occasionally gusting to tropical storm force
overnight tonight and Sunday. It will be overcast with a few showers
through Sunday. High swells and rip currents are affecting the
easterly and southeasterly beaches on the island. Bertha should
remain a category 1 hurricane through tonight with top winds between
75-85 mph. It will begin to lose strength on Sunday as the storm
moves over gradually colder water, moving out to the northeast.

REST OF THE TROPICS: The Intertropical Convergence Zone
is quite nervous across the Atlantic from the Cape Verde Islands to
the Lesser Antilles. The various models have been hinting that we
will see a tropical depression form in the eastern Atlantic over the
next 4-7 days. It may brush the Virgin Islands next weekend. Look
for another tropical storm in the Atlantic around the 25th. We are
heading toward the heart of hurricane season and the early activity in
the eastern Atlantic is bad omen from a historical standpoint. It
could point to a very active season ahead.

ON THIS DATE IN 1897: A hidden lake buried deep in a
glacier on Mont Blanc in the Swiss Alps broke through the ice and sent
millions of cubic feet of water crashing down on unsuspecting villages
below the mountain. Two hundred people died in the catastrophe.
Scientists today worry that another such event could occur today with
similarly disastrous results.

...In The Good Old Summertime...

A SEA OF HUMIDITY: It is July in Alabama. There are two unescapable
facts about this month in the Deep South. It is going to be hot and
the humidity is going to be up there. We are not the only ones dealing
with high humidity. Amazingly, the dew point was 75 in Fargo, North
Dakota this afternoon—a little more humid than we are here. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms were developing over South Alabama this
afternoon, but only a few over the north. That will change as we get
into late afternoon and evening when we will have a good chance of
getting wet in most communities. We believe that the number of
thunderstorms will decrease some for tomorrow only to increase again
on Sunday, especially Sunday afternoon and evening. What does this
mean in the rain department? Our estimates now are that Central
Alabama will get about 1.50 inches of rain between now and Sunday
night, most of it coming on Sunday.

A COOL FRONT IN JULY? Rare, but not totally out of the question. It
seems that the morning run of the weather models and the evening runs
are arguing with each other. For the second morning in a row, one of
our most used models still projects the cool front to push into
Central Alabama Monday only to sit down and rest near the coast by
late Tuesday. No big deal as far as the temperature is concerned, but
the humidity will drop off somewhat on Tuesday. We are projecting a
low of 65 for Tuesday morning. Some spots in North Alabama, especially
in the valleys, may have near 60.

TROPICAL WEATHER: During the entire life of Bertha, so far, an Air
Force reconnaissance plane has not checked her out until today. This
afternoon the center of Hurricane Bertha was located, by that
hurricane hunter, about 300 miles SSE of Bermuda. She was moving NW at
only 6 mph. She should gradually turn to the north during the next 24
hours. The NW and west fringes of Bertha should be nearing Bermuda on
Saturday. Sustained winds were 85 mph—maybe a bit stronger than that.
The projected path is for the center to pass about 100 miles east of
Bermuda Sunday morning, then curving more to the north and NE and
dropping back to tropical storm strength later Sunday.

SEVERE WEATHER: This time of year, most of the outlook for severe
thunderstorms and possible tornadoes are in the Northern USA. Looking
ahead to tomorrow, a Slight Risk covers an area from near St. Louis NE
to include Chicago, Indianapolis and Detroit.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: There were 419 lightning fatalities in the
USA in 1944 compared to 275 tornado fatalities. Over the years, the
number of lightning deaths has fallen mainly because of educational
efforts even though the population has grown. 1974 was the last year
that we had more than 102 deaths.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Someone asked me recently what were some
of the most interesting times I had ever had with Miss Molly. When she
was real young, soon after we got her, she would jump up on the king-
size bed, walk up my body and rub her nose against my face.
Translation: I need to go to the bathroom. One day about a year ago,
we met two of the larger dogs in the community. One of them was so
glad to see us that he rapidly circled Molly and I wrapping his leash
around my ankles so quickly that I could not move. Then he paused,
heisted his leg and used my leg for a fireplug. My trousers were wet
from the knee down, it ran into my shoe and I had to slosh my way
home. Threw the shoe away and changed trousers. Life goes on. Dogs are
wonderful. Wish I had 50.

...More Afternoon Storms...

TROPICAL AIR STAYS IN PLACE: A deep layer of moist air remain in place
across Alabama this morning, and we expect another day of tropical
downpours this afternoon. While a few morning showers are possible,
most of the showers and thunderstorms will come this afternoon into
the nighttime hours. The slow movers could drop over one inch of rain
in a short amount of time, with some localized flooding possible. And,
of course, all summer storms pack gobs of lightning, and there is
potential for strong gusty winds as well. Most communities will remain
below 90 again today due to the clouds and showery conditions.

OUR WEEKEND: The old surface front just north of here will fall apart
during the next 24 hours, leaving the state in a moist environment
tomorrow and Sunday. That means scattered, mainly afternoon showers
and thunderstorms both days. The storms should be more numerous by
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night with another cold front approaching
from the north.
It now appears that this front will indeed have enough southward push
to reach South Alabama by early Monday. This means the northern half
of the state should be generally rain-free for the first half of next
week with lower humidity values and cooler nights. We could reach the
low 60s by daybreak Tuesday. Afternoon highs will be in the low 90s,
but the low humidity will help to make the heat a little more
comfortable. A few widely scattered afternoon showers or storms could
show up by the latter half of the week.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Look for about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine along
the Gulf Coast from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores tomorrow and
Sunday, with the daily opportunity of a few
scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs will stay in the 86 to 89
degree range, with water temperatures remain mostly in the mid 80s.

BERTHA: Hurricane Bertha is hanging in here; this morning the system
is about 300 miles southeast of Bermuda, and is moving to the north-
northwest. Bertha should pass east of Bermuda over the weekend, with a
slow weakening trend beginning by Monday as the storm begins to move
over colder water of the North Atlantic. Still no threat to the East
Coast of the U.S. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet,
and additional tropical storm formation is not expected through Sunday.

THURSDAY SOAKERS: Cullman County was under a flash flood warning for a
few hours last night; the rain total at our SKYCAM site just east of
downtown Cullman was 1.33", but radar data suggested some parts of the
county received over two inches. Up to one foot of water was flowing
over roads in West Point. Our Skywatcher in Jemison reported 1.13".

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the U.S. yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 124 degrees; coldest was Stanley, Idaho with 34 degrees. Coldest
place in Alaska was Barrow with 36. This is the time of the year when
folks in Barrow enjoy the "midnight sun".

...Noisy Thunderstorms...

FEWER STORMS EARLY IN THE WEEK: We still need rain, but how would you
like a break from so many thunderstorms starting about Tuesday and
lasting through Thursday? It does not happen very often in July, but
it looks like a weak cool front may push down across Alabama starting
during the day Monday. One of our most trusted weather models (if
there is such a thing) hints that the front may push all the way down
to Gulf Shores by midweek. That would not eliminate all the showers
and thunderstorms, especially down south, but it could mean a drop in
humidity over the north and central counties. We do not want to bet
the farm on this yet, but we could see some early morning low
temperatures in the mid 60s by Tuesday morning. That will be
noticeably better than low and mid 70s like we have had recently.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: I should not be dreaming about lower humidity,
but instead dealing with the thunderstorms at hand. They were slow
about developing today, but once they got started, they increased in
number this afternoon. Most of them were moving almost due east and,
again today, they were sporting loud window-shaking thunder and vivid
lightning. So far this afternoon, most of the storms have been across
North/Central and Central Alabama with very few in the Tennessee
Valley. South Alabama has not had many, except near the coast.

We expect more scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow—a good
chance, in fact, and some communities again will get locally heavy rain.

A large number of communities got downpours yesterday. Some of the
heavier amounts (A long list is posted on the 33/40 Blog.):

3.89 at Valley Head
2.80 Athens TVA
1.47 Birmingham Airport
1.72 Munford

A 101-DEGREE WAKE UP: How would you like to awaken with a low
temperature of 101? That happened this morning in Death Valley,
California where the high yesterday was 127. Elsewhere around this
great nation it was a chilly 36 this morning in Fairbanks and Barrow,
Alaska. Some of the coolest temperatures in the lower 48 are in the
40s in places like Yellowstone National Park. Honolulu has received
only 2.13 inches of rain so far this year, which is only 22% of
average. The blistering heat continues in the Desert Southwest. It was
105 yesterday in Yosemite National Park. Lake Mead, which is the main
water source for Las Vegas and other cities in the Southwest, was only
46% full this morning.

TROPICAL: Hurricane Bertha was about 485 miles SE of Bermuda this
afternoon. That is the only storm of concern in the entire Atlantic
Basin. The latest track forecast takes the old girl not too far east
of Bermuda Sunday and then northward toward the colder waters of the
North Atlantic. She had sustained winds of 90 mph at midday. She
should drop below hurricane force Monday night.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has been asleep almost
the entire day. The storms yesterday and especially last night were so
loud that it was shaking our windows, so you can guess where she was.
She now has 4 or 5 hiding places and when she hears the first thunder
over in Mississippi it takes her only about 15 seconds to go into
hibernation. A story later about a tragic loss of a beloved pet.

...Showers and Storms Ramping Up...

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: The combination of deep tropical moisture, and a
weak surface boundary just north of here will mean scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today. While the
best chance of storms will come this afternoon, we sure can't rule our
a few morning showers in spots. Like recent days, the storms that fire
up today will be slow movers, and some spots will get heavy amounts of
rain. And, the storms will be capable of producing strong, gusty
winds, small hail, and a bunch of lightning. Heat levels will drop due
to the clouds and showers; most Alabama communities won't make it out
of the 80s today.

The front to the north will dissipate tomorrow, leaving Alabama in a
moist, tropical airmass over the weekend. That means routine summer
weather for Saturday and Sunday with your classic mix of sun, heat,
humidity, and storms. Highs over the weekend will be pretty close to
90 degrees, which is about average for mid-July in Alabama.
Some hint of a temporary intrusion of drier air in here around Tuesday
of next week on the computer model runs, but dry air shots are pretty
rare here in the middle of July, so we will roll with a persistence
forecast all of next week for now.

BERTHA: This hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic grew stronger
again yesterday, making category two status with sustained winds of
105 mph. The system is about 600 miles southeast of Bermuda, and
should recurve over the open water of the Atlantic during the next
five days only threatening shipping lanes. Bertha will weaken to a
tropical storm by the weekend as it moves over colder water. For now,
the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

BEACH FORECAST: We expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day
along the Gulf coast (Panama City west to Gulf Shores) through Sunday
with the daily chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs
along the coast will be in the mid to upper 80s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The Great Midwest Flood continues: flood waters
close the Des Moines, Iowa water treatment plant, leaving the city's
250,000 residents without water for 12 days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1936: Unbelievable heat in the Mid Atlantic states.
Following state all-time heat records fell on this date: 111 at
Phoenixville PA; 112 at Martinsburg WV; 109 atFrederick and Cumberland
MD; and 110 at Runyon NJ. The 1930s is the hottest decade on record in
the U.S., and featured the Great Dust Bowl Drought.

TO COOL YOU OFF: Check our this report from our Skywatcher in
Girdwood, Alaska, Todd Foisy: High 57.7/Low 47.1/Current 57.3/Rain
Trace. The year without a summer continues. The cool, cloudy weather
persists, and the nearby mountains still have the highest amount of
snowpack left since records began in 1983.

THURSDAY OUR WETTEST DAY: That does not mean that will be the only
day that we will have showers and thunderstorms. In fact, they are in
our forecast every day all the way through Sunday. A weak cold front
(make that weak cool front) may push down into North Alabama at some
point tomorrow before it washes out. This should cause a general
increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms. Some of those
storms could be a bit on the strong side. We still have a fairly good
chance of thunderstorms on Friday, but they should thin out for
Saturday and Sunday.

GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING WET: Between now and late Friday, almost
everybody in North and Central Alabama should get at least some rain.
Some of these storms will dump locally heavy amounts and do not be
surprised at all to hear some rain tallies of 1 to 2 inches for the
whole system.

Scattered thunderstorms began developing at midday over parts of
Alabama, but the stronger ones were still up in Tennessee. The
stubborn old thermometer had already exceeded 90 in most of the state
by early this afternoon, including some mid 90s up in NW Alabama. This
means that a few of those storms could be on the strong side. There
has already been at least one Severe Thunderstorm Warning in the
Tennessee Valley this afternoon. This is going to be one of those
situations where the showers and thunderstorms do not completely go
away after dark. A few could persist overnight. Thunderstorms always
give us hour-to-hour surprises, so there is a chance that some place
(especially over the northern third of the state) could celebrate a 3-
inch rain total from these storms.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for
this afternoon and tonight from about Nashville east to the coast of
Virginia and North Carolina. It also includes the NE corner of
Alabama. Another Slight Risk from just north of New York City all the
way through Maine. For tomorrow, the only Slight Risk mentioned is
from Des Moines, Chicago and Milwaukee northward to include all of
Minnesota and Eastern Dakotas.

WAR ZONE WEATHER: The weather does not change much in Baghdad through
the summer. It is blistering hot on most days and very little rain. We
know many families have loved ones there, so we like to mention it at
least once a week. The high of 109 is forecast for tomorrow, then
highs of 111 to 113 through the weekend with lows 82 to 86. Mostly
clear.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Just had to check in on one of my favorite
locations, which is Old Crow in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. They
are having lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. They have a full 24
hours where there is some visible light. At Juneau, 17 hours and 51
minutes of possible sunshine today is decreasing about 3 minutes a
day. Much of California is either under a Extreme Heat Advisory or a
Red Flag warning for fire danger and winds. It was 126 in Death Valley
yesterday. That is only 8 degrees short of the hottest ever recorded
in the USA, which was 134 at the same location. Las Vegas was
expecting 113 today and 117 at Lake Mead.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly needs a rest day after
she spends the day at the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). So, yesterday she
curled up in a tight knot that looked like a Frisbee and slept most of
the day. She is still not fully rested today. Our friend in Hueytown
semi-scolded me for saying Molly looked like a swamp rat. It was good-
natured. They have two Shih-tzus named Maxwell and Honey. Life goes
on.....
