THURSDAY OUR WETTEST DAY: That does not mean that will be the only
day that we will have showers and thunderstorms. In fact, they are in
our forecast every day all the way through Sunday. A weak cold front
(make that weak cool front) may push down into North Alabama at some
point tomorrow before it washes out. This should cause a general
increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms. Some of those
storms could be a bit on the strong side. We still have a fairly good
chance of thunderstorms on Friday, but they should thin out for
Saturday and Sunday.

GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING WET: Between now and late Friday, almost
everybody in North and Central Alabama should get at least some rain.
Some of these storms will dump locally heavy amounts and do not be
surprised at all to hear some rain tallies of 1 to 2 inches for the
whole system.

Scattered thunderstorms began developing at midday over parts of
Alabama, but the stronger ones were still up in Tennessee. The
stubborn old thermometer had already exceeded 90 in most of the state
by early this afternoon, including some mid 90s up in NW Alabama. This
means that a few of those storms could be on the strong side. There
has already been at least one Severe Thunderstorm Warning in the
Tennessee Valley this afternoon. This is going to be one of those
situations where the showers and thunderstorms do not completely go
away after dark. A few could persist overnight. Thunderstorms always
give us hour-to-hour surprises, so there is a chance that some place
(especially over the northern third of the state) could celebrate a 3-
inch rain total from these storms.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for
this afternoon and tonight from about Nashville east to the coast of
Virginia and North Carolina. It also includes the NE corner of
Alabama. Another Slight Risk from just north of New York City all the
way through Maine. For tomorrow, the only Slight Risk mentioned is
from Des Moines, Chicago and Milwaukee northward to include all of
Minnesota and Eastern Dakotas.

WAR ZONE WEATHER: The weather does not change much in Baghdad through
the summer. It is blistering hot on most days and very little rain. We
know many families have loved ones there, so we like to mention it at
least once a week. The high of 109 is forecast for tomorrow, then
highs of 111 to 113 through the weekend with lows 82 to 86. Mostly
clear.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Just had to check in on one of my favorite
locations, which is Old Crow in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. They
are having lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. They have a full 24
hours where there is some visible light. At Juneau, 17 hours and 51
minutes of possible sunshine today is decreasing about 3 minutes a
day. Much of California is either under a Extreme Heat Advisory or a
Red Flag warning for fire danger and winds. It was 126 in Death Valley
yesterday. That is only 8 degrees short of the hottest ever recorded
in the USA, which was 134 at the same location. Las Vegas was
expecting 113 today and 117 at Lake Mead.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly needs a rest day after
she spends the day at the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). So, yesterday she
curled up in a tight knot that looked like a Frisbee and slept most of
the day. She is still not fully rested today. Our friend in Hueytown
semi-scolded me for saying Molly looked like a swamp rat. It was good-
natured. They have two Shih-tzus named Maxwell and Honey. Life goes
on.....
