==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: A simple capacitor put me back in the cool this morning as
the air conditioning man shower up and fixed my problem in about three
minutes. Ahhhh....cool air....

COOL AIR FOR EVERYONE: We will all get a dose of nature's air conditioning
starting tomorrow, thanks to a strong cold front that is located to our
northwest this afternoon. Behind the front, cooler and dier air will
overspread the area starting on Sunday. Sunday night lows will drop well
into the fifties over the area, and I will not be surprised to see several
forties when the morning lows are posted tomorrow morning. Daytime highs on
Sunday and Monday will be in the seventies, just slightly below normal for
mid-May in Alabama.

RAIN AND STORMS AHEAD: A large area of showers and thunderstorms was ahead
of the front over Tennessee and Mississippi, extending into Northwest
Alabama. This activity is associated with a pre-frontal trough.
Thunderstorm activity will continue to slowly slide southeastward during the
afternoon and evening hours, spreading over the area during the evening and
overnight.

STRONG STORMS?: There is lots of available energy for thunderstorms that
are sagging into the area this afternoon. All of the sunshine has warmed
temperatures and moisture levels are decent. In addition, there is a
marginal amount of wind shear, so thunderstorms that do develop could attain
some organization and could become briefly severe. The greatest threat will
come from damaging winds. There could also be a little small hail.

So, as the area of storms moves into the area this evening, you can expect
a few storms with brief heavy rains, gusty winds and perhaps small hail.
Take cover if you hear thunder, because if you do, you are in danger of
being struck by lightning.

SUNDAY WEATHER: Skies will become partly cloudy rather quickly behind the
front on Sunday. With the comfortable highs and a cool northerly breeze, it
will feel quite nice. Throw those windows open Sunday night and enjoy!

REST OF THE WEEK: Nice weather will continue for the first half of the
coming week. Mostly sunny skies should prevail on Monday and Tuesday.
Highs on Monday will still be in the seventies, and highs on Tuesday will
reach 80 degrees or a little higher. Our weather will continue under the
influence of high pressure through Tuesday. By Wednesday, that high
pressure will slide to the east and allow southerly winds to return across
the area. Moisture levels will quickly be on the rise. Another cold front
will approach from the west of Thursday, bringing a good chance of showers
and thunderstorms. This front should move through the area early on Friday,
although there will be a few leftover showers during the day. The passage
of the cold front should set the stage for a very nice weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: Severe hailstorm in Kansas City, Missouri. Some
hailstones were observed as large as 9.5 inches in circumference. Nearly
every home in the eastern and central parts of the city had their south
facing windows knocked out.

...Breaks In Heat Wave Here...

GOOD MORNING! That sound that you don't hear this morning is my air
conditioner. It picked a great time to go out yesterday. The temperature
at 5 p.m. CDT was 87.5F...inside. Did you know that it was still 82F at 7
p.m.? You pay attention to those things when you need the cooler air
outside to come inside. So, I just pretended I was back in the Old South
before air conditioning. Why couldn't it have gone out tomorrow night?

SO WHAT ABOUT TOMORROW? Last week, I parodied my friends who were impatient
for summer by asking, "Where's my warm up?" Careful what you ask for. We
had a nice one this week. We will see a break in the heatwave. I don't
think we will see in temperatures like the past few days for the next seven
days. In fact, we should see 70s for daytime highs tomorrow and Monday.

FORECAST: CRAWFISH! Good weather for the final day of the annual
Schaeffer Eye Clinic Crawfish Boil in the Railroad District. There is a
slight chance of an isolated storm this afternoon along with partly cloudy
skies. Skies will become cloudy early this evening and a line of showers
and storms will arrive during the overnight hours, likely after the
Wallflowers finish playing about 11:30 p.m. Western sections will see the
showers and storms earlier. Severe weather is not expected, but a couple of
the storms could pack a little punch with lightning, brief gusty winds and a
short duration of heavy rain. A fairly strong cold front will arrive by
Sunday morning. Lows tonight will drop to near 60 degrees. Skies will
quickly go back to partly cloudy Sunday morning, with nice temperatures in
the 70s during the afternoon. Some places across Alabama will enjoy
refreshing lows in the upper 40s Monday morning!

BACK INTO THE WORK WEEK: I hesitate to say we are going to have nice
weather next week, because we really could use the rain. Unless we get a
good amount tonight, and that doesn't look likely, we might even deal with a
real fire hazard soon. The week ahead will be dry it appears.

THE BIG SWITCH: We had a 15-day run between April 23 and May 7 when our
average daily high temperature was only 69 and many of the early morning
lows were in the 40s and even some upper 30s. We got completely spoiled. In
the last four days, our average high has been 86 and some communities around
Central Alabama topped the 90-degree mark. So far in May there has been very
little rain-not a drop so far in Huntsville and their deficiency for the
year has reached 7.66 inches. A mere 0.01 at Birmingham Airport with a
deficiency at 5.40 inches.

We hope this does not mean we're in for a long, hot summer. No way to tell
this early. Droughts and heat waves are first cousins, but despite the
recent dry weather, we are definitely not in a drought yet.

WHAT'S AHEAD: A cold front will push into Central Alabama early Sunday
morning. A band of showers and possibly a few thunderstorms will be along
and ahead of the front. While we could see an isolated shower or storm
Saturday afternoon, our best chance will be late Saturday night and into the
wee morning hours Sunday. We don't expect a great deal of rain. Any one
community will be lucky to get one-half inch and probably less. It will be
clearing during the day Sunday. Monday will be a model day for comfort. (See
our day-by-day forecast.)

THREE DOT STUFF: We'll make these sentences as short as possible-a lot to
cover...10 tornadoes in the last 24 hours, mostly over NW Texas...6.33
inches of rain at Durham, Kansas, Topeka over 3 inches...his last storm
system dumped 29 inches of snow at Alta, Utah and 38 inches near Red Lodge,
Montana...a huge drop in temperature at Saranac Lake, New York where it was
82 Tuesday only to plunge 66 degrees to a low of 16 this morning...hottest
in the country Thursday 103 at Castolon in SW Texas.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Generally good weather. Some showers and possibly a
storm mainly late Saturday night, becoming mostly sunny Sunday and Monday.
Highs 82-85.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the third night in a row, little Miss
Molly jumped a rabbit last night. It was sitting in the grassy area near the
Old Crow Motel. We think the rabbits live in the Hare Haven Apartments
inside the thick hedgerow. Lots of excitement on our morning walk. An old
crow was strolling across the walking track too close to a mockingbird's
hangout. The ensuing air battle lasted as far as we could see. The poor crow
took evasive action zigzagging as much as Molly. At one point the bird
overtook the crow, dived from above and pecked the crow on the back. I sure
thought that crow would have a midair cardiac arrest. At the far north end
of our walk, a huge house cat that I had not seen before, slowly crossed in
front of us. The cat is clearly a candidate for Weight Watchers. Molly got
very excited, but I would not let her get close. I didn't want her eyes
scratched out. Remember, in our tiny, quiet and peaceful corner of the
world, this is about as exciting as it gets. Life calmly goes on and on and
on. We love it that way!

...Not Much Rain This Weekend...

The good news is that a cold front will ease through Alabama over the
weekend, bringing drier and cooler air in here by Sunday and Monday. The
other bit of good news is that rain should be limited to Saturday night, and
amounts should be light. That means outdoor activities during the day
Saturday and Sunday should not be bothered much by wet weather. The bad news
is that it won't rain all that much at most places.

Sure, we all like a nice weekend, but we sure need some rain. Birmingham's
total for the month of May is only 0.01", and the rain deficit for the year
is now 5.40". Looks like most places will get a quarter inch or less over
the weekend, with the best chance of rain coming from about 6:00 p.m.
Saturday through 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

Most of next week looks rain free at this point; we might see a few
scattered afternoon showers over the latter half of the week, but nothing
really organized or heavy.

BEACH FORECAST: Lots of sunshine on the central Gulf coast today and
tomorrow with daytime highs around 80 on the immediate coast. A few
scattered showers or storms will show up on Sunday, but no wash-out. The sea
water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Alabama coast is now
running at 77 degrees.

THURSDAY'S WARMTH: High temperatures across Alabama yesterday included 91 in
Tuscaloosa and Decatur, 90 at Huntsville, and 89 at Anniston and Muscle
Shoals. The official high for Birmingham, based on data from the airport,
was 88 degrees.

MORE STORMS OUT WEST: Severe storms across parts of west Texas were
responsible for five tornadoes and over 30 reports of large hail, up to the
size of baseballs.

WHAT IS HOT AND WHAT IS NOT: We have tossed that question around the
weather office some lately. For me, I start using the term "hot" as soon as
the temperature reaches or exceeds 90. I worked with one forecaster once
that would not use hot until it got to 95 or higher. To me 85 is hot, but
I'm not a good one to ask because my favorite high-low temperature each day
would be 66-36.

Despite the debate, it has felt warmer than usual lately because we quickly
transitioned from a long period of below normal temperatures. Not much
change on the thermometer until Sunday when a cold front will come through.
We still have a big concern with dry weather. The approaching cold front
should bring a band of showers and thunderstorms Saturday night and very
early Sunday morning. We are afraid that most of the heavier rain will pass
to our north, but there is a good chance that many communities in Central
Alabama will get close to 1/2 inch of rain. By Sunday afternoon, the sky
should be clearing. Monday looks like a very pleasant day with all sunshine
and lower humidity.

A VIOLENT 24 HOURS: There were 17 tornado reports, 235 hail reports and 32
reports of strong to high winds in the last 24 hours. Hardest hit was
Southern Nebraska, NE Kansas, North Missouri and the central parts of
Illinois and Indiana. Thrown in for extra measure were numerous cases of
flash flooding. One of the hardest hit places was Hastings, Nebraska. There
was extensive damage to the downtown area and travel was discouraged. Debris
covered many roads, sidewalks and property. Lots of windows knocked out by
large hail and flooding was extensive as they got 5.48 inches of rain. Part
of the storm system was heavy snow with 8 inches in the Black Hills of South
Dakota.

THE MISSOURI RIVER: It's one of the nation's most important river systems
to agricultural interests. It starts in Western Montana and zigzags across
the Dakotas and then southward to Omaha and Kansas City and then eastward
joining the Mississippi at St. Louis. Part of that huge river basin has
experienced a very severe drought. The weather for the last 2 or 3 days
could not have been more of a godsend. Todd Fosey, the 33/40 weather watcher
in Billings, Montana, has been writing some great stories from his National
Weather Service office. He reports that Red Lodge, Montana received 7.99
inches of rain in only 48 hours. The Red Lodge Ski area got 3 feet of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has gotten used to the
rearranged furniture. It is better for her when she goes on "community
watch" and wants to see out of every window in the living area. An exciting
walk this morning. She finally got to talk to Jojo, who I still think she is
deeply in love with. This time Jojo, about three times Molly's size, did
not run off. Molly approached him very, very carefully. They kissed and
rubbed noses then they sniffed each other's south end. (Why can't dogs just
shake paws like humans shake hands when they meet?) When they did that, Jojo
turned around suddenly and Molly bolted. I finally got her to come back and
rub noses some more. Little Miss Molly ought to know by now to not poke
herself into the thick cedar tree on the walking track. She should have
learned that somewhere in the deep greenery is a mockingbird condo. Sure
enough, the mockingbird came fluttering out and scared the wits out of
Molly. All of this is big drama in our tiny corner of the world. Just as
exciting as the single engine plane in Washington yesterday. Life goes on
among the old crows, spiders, gnats, you name it. But we are very happy as
long as Molly's treats don't run out.

...Upper 80s Again This Afternoon...

Summer-like warmth headlines our forecast again today, with most places headed back to the upper 80s this afternoon. Like yesterday, a few isolated showers could form during the peak of the daytime heat, but warm air aloft should keep the atmosphere stable and we have not mentioned rain in our formal forecast.

WEEKEND COLD FRONT: We are still expecting a cold front in here Sunday morning, which will bring a band of showers and storms, and then cooler temperatures by Sunday and Monday. At this point it looks like the best chance of showers and storms will come from about 5:00 p.m. Saturday through 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Rainfall amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch look likely. Severe weather is not expected to be a big problem with the main dynamic support passing well to the north of the state.
By Monday morning of next week, temperatures should reach the low 50s over much of north and central Alabama. Warmer and more humid air will return by the middle of next week.

HOT MAY DAY: Some spots in Alabama reached 90 degrees for the first time this year yesterday. Highs included 90 at Tuscaloosa, Jacksonville, Huntsville, and Inverness, 89 at Jasper, Bessemer, Hueytown, and Montgomery, and 88 at the Birmingham Airport, Clay, and Cullman. In Tupelo, MS yesterday the high was 91 degrees.

CORN BELT STORMS: Hailstones up to 3 inches in diameter (the size of tennis balls) pelted Hastings, NE late yesterday producing major damage. There were reports of almost five inches of rain in only 90 minutes, and flash flooding was serious as well. Dozens of windows on homes and cars on the east side of Hastings were shattered by the large hail.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It’s getting warmer and warmer as we continue to scan the horizon with all of our eyes looking and lusting for rain. Not much chance soon. Last night some strong thunderstorms moved south right along the Alabama-Georgia border producing hail in several locations. The temperature aloft was about 7 degrees colder over that way than over the Birmingham area. The atmosphere is more stable today. We expect few, if any, showers or storms this afternoon and evening, although not totally out of the question over on the east side.

We are still calling for upper 80s for our Thursday high, which will be generally the warmest day this season. A few showers and storms may show up Friday. Latest guidance tends to downplay a chance of storms later Saturday. It now appears an approaching cold front will give us our best chance of some showers and thunderstorms Sunday morning followed by cooler temperatures. See our day-by-day forecast.

UNDER BOMBARDMENT: A double whammy of sorts for the small community of Trenton in NW Georgia last evening. Two separate thunderstorms 20 minutes apart dumped 1.75-inch hail. By far, the worst severe weather yesterday and last night was over the Northern Plains and Midwest. There were 19 tornado reports and 158 hail reports, most of those in SE Nebraska. A moderate risk of severe weather lingers for much of the Central USA.

A BIG, WET, SNOWY STORM: Matt Marshall, a Birmingham native but living in Layton, Utah for a number of years, sent us some beautiful snow pictures this morning. Layton, located south of Ogden, got 3 inches of snow. The pictures were so pretty because many of the trees already had their fresh coat of greenery. Heavy rain was also widespread over North Utah, Wyoming and into Montana in an area of the country that has been crying out for rain. At Pleasant Grove, Utah, 1.91 inches of rain. 16 inches of new snow fell at the 9,600-foot level at Alta, Utah.

A HOT UNIVERSITY: An official high of 95 yesterday on the campus of Kansas State University at Manhattan. Not too far up the road, the low this morning was 21 at Minot, North Dakota...a very impressive 1040 millibar high pressure area building down from Canada. It’s setting off some heavy snow in parts of Montana and Wyoming. The main part of that cold air will slide off to the NE and cause some huge changes in weather. For example, at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York, they expect 75 this afternoon only to drop into the teens Thursday night.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Last Saturday on the spur of the moment, I moved all of the furniture around in our living area. You should have seen little Miss Molly. For one thing, she went to one of her severe weather safe areas—the king-sized bed. She stayed on top of that bed peeping out of the door until I got everything moved. She sure did give me some stern, funny looks. She is a creature of habit and likes to keep everything status quo. When she ventured back in, she tried out three different chairs right away to stake out her claim. I think she likes it better. I like it much better, because I now have a comfortable reading chair by our floor to ceiling bookcases where I can easily reach everything and get an education...when little Miss Molly awoke very early this morning, she rang the little bell on the back door so hard that it fell off. Anxious to see her reaction the next time with the bell missing. Life goes on.

...Warmest Weather So Far This Year...

The warmest temperature so far this year in Birmingham is 84 degrees, which was recorded on March 26. There is a good chance we will top that today as we get into the warmest weather so far this year. We expect highs in the 86 to 89 degree range over north and central Alabama today and tomorrow, more like mid-June instead of mid-May. While a few small, isolated showers might pop up during the heat of the day, we won’t mention them in our formal forecast since warm air aloft should keep a lid on afternoon shower activity for the most part. The chance of any one front yard getting wet over the next few days is only about one in ten.

Temperatures will begin to trend downward slowly by the weekend as a cold front approaches from the northwest. A few scattered showers and storms should break out Saturday afternoon, becoming more numerous Saturday night into Sunday morning as the front passes through.

By Sunday afternoon, the best chance of rain should be east and south of Birmingham as drier and slightly cooler air filters into the state.
The first two days of next week should be pleasant and rain-free.

WARMING UP: The warm spot yesterday in Alabama was Muscle Shoals with 87 degrees. Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Dothan, and Evergreen reached 86, and Pinson reported 85.

EAST ALABAMA HAIL: Evening storms produced nickel sized hail which covered the ground near Gaylesville in Cherokee county yesterday. Penny sized hail (3/4” in diameter) was reported near Forney, Fruithurst, and Sylvania.
ROAMING: Hot spot in the nation yesterday was Wink, TX with 98. A tornado touched down last night near Audubon, KS.

BMW owners, why go anywhere else?
==================================================================

PUNY RAINFALL AMOUNTS: It was a disappointment. We had expected some rainfall amounts of around one-third inch yesterday to help our dry weather situation. It was not to be. A number of places got rain, but it made absolutely no dent in the dryness. Some of the heavier amounts were only 0.03 to 0.05—which would hardly settle the dust. One of the “heaviest” amounts was 0.15 in Fayette. In Shelby County at Pelham, 33/40 weather watcher, Allan McMillan, reported not even a drop which now means 10 days in a row with zero rainfall.

Warmer air aloft was making the atmosphere more stable this afternoon, except over SE Alabama. There is still a chance of some thunderstorms developing quickly this afternoon over SE Alabama, South and East Georgia and into South Carolina. The Storm Prediction Center has some of that area under a slight risk. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued in Baldwin County.

While it’s not impossible to have an isolated thunderstorm Wednesday and Thursday. We think the chance is small enough to leave it out of the forecast. The next two days could bring our warmest temperatures so far. However, dew points will be hanging in the 62 to 65 range which will make it more bearable. Finally, we look for an increase in showers and thunderstorms late Saturday into Sunday as a cold front gets closer to the state. (See our day-by-day forecast.)

SCANNING FAR AND WIDE: As we look out across the great North American weatherscape this afternoon, we see a great diversity. A significant snowstorm is going to occur in parts of Wyoming through tomorrow. This last storm dumped 12 inches of snow yesterday on the Squaw Valley Ski area in California. A Tornado Warning was issued in Washington state when a distinct funnel cloud was sighted. More heavy rain in parts of California. The temperature fell to 24 at Lake Tahoe this morning and to 17 in Barrow, Alaska. The high yesterday was 101 in Laredo, Texas...on this date in 1987, 14.50 inches of rain fell at Lillian on the Alabama coast...in 1905 on this date, 87 persons were killed in a very noisy tornado at Snyder, Oklahoma. The roar of the tornado could be heard for 12 miles as it cut a 40-mile long track.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Miss Molly is doing her usual routine today—bossing me around. I wanted to use this space for a follow-up on Linda Knight. She is the lady that lost her shih-tzu named Leah when her older dog, Sally, suddenly turned on the much smaller dog and killed her during the Easter weekend. I asked her permission for this update. These are her words exactly, “Sally is still not herself, but doing better. She is very conscious of her behavior and not being as rambunctious as before. It may be my imagination, but it seems that since Leah’s death, Sally spends most of her time just looking out the window. She will lay on the floor for hours with her head on the windowsill. As for me, I have my moments. Fortunately, I have three full-time professions and hobbies, so I manage to stay pretty busy and that keeps my mind occupied. However, Leah is and always will be in my heart. There were too many unique things that Leah did that will stay with me forever.”

Thanks to Linda for that update. It proves once again that our little animals have real feelings and emotions. It behooves us to keep that in mind at all times. Life goes on.

...Summer-Like Weather Continues...

We will maintain the risk of a few showers this morning as the tail end of a
weather system over the Midwest moves across Alabama, but by afternoon all
of the rain should be to the east.

The big story for mid-week is the fact we are expecting the warmest
temperatures so far this year. Most communities will peak in the 86 to 89
degree range tomorrow and Thursday, well above the normal high of 80 degrees
for this time of the year. Humidity levels will remain quite high, making
the afternoon temperatures rather oppressive, much like summer. We really
cannot totally eliminate the chance of isolated afternoon showers in this
kind of pattern, but warm air aloft should keep a lid on most showers, and
the chance of any one spot getting wet over the latter half of the week will
be very small.

WEEKEND PEEK: A decent cold front is forecast to move through the state late
in the weekend, and we will mention a good chance of showers and a few
thunderstorms mainly Saturday night and Sunday. There is a chance slightly
cooler and drier could work in here by Monday of next week on a temporary
basis.

AIR QUALITY: Yesterday's air quality index (AQI) for the Birmingham metro
area was 104, which is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups". The
primary pollutant was particulates. Today's AQI forecast for Jefferson and
Shelby counties is yellow, meaning air quality is forecast to be moderate.

WE NEED RAIN: Last night's showers brought the first rain of the month of
May to the Birmingham metro area. Only a small amount was measured, and we
still need almost five inches to get back to normal levels since the first
of the year.

TRENDING TOWARD SUMMER: Notice that there is more haze in the atmosphere
the last few days? 'Tis another hint of a transition in the season as we
slowly work our way toward summer. It's not here yet and we could still have
some more cool snaps, although we do not see one at the moment.
It won't be too long until we'll be stuck solid in what we call "HHH"
weather. That's when you hear the same old forecast every day that says
"hot, humid and hazy."

Showers and some thunderstorms were increasing across Mississippi this
afternoon and showers had advanced into West Alabama. We will be subject to
a chance of showers, along with some thunderstorms, overnight. The Storm
Prediction Center extended a slight risk of severe weather eastward to near
the Alabama-Mississippi border overnight. We do not look for any severe
here. We look for those to thin out by midday tomorrow followed by higher
daytime temperatures and few, if any, showers on Wednesday. After that we
can look for at least a small chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Thursday and Friday and maybe a better chance next Saturday and Sunday. A
cold front may make an effort to push into NW Alabama Sunday and slow down
in the area next Monday. One thing you will notice is some higher
temperatures topping out in the mid 80s from Wednesday through Friday.

MOTHER'S DAY: One more look back. It had to be a near perfect day
weather-wise in Alabama. Not everywhere, however, as there were 218 reports
of hail in a narrow zone from Minnesota south to East Texas. Three tornadoes
were also reported in that zone. Houston did not have a good Mother's Day as
4 inches of rain fell in the Houston Heights area of the city. As much as 9
inches of snow fell in Southern Wyoming.

CLEANING OUT MY NOTES: Low temperatures this morning included 22 in
Meredith, Colorado and 15 at Deadhorse, Alaska...Laredo's 98 was the Sunday
hot spot...Bakersfield, California has experienced their 12th wettest season
ever...in the NE, Worcester, Massachusetts received 113 inches of snow this
season-a whopping 51 inches above normal...Boston had 87 inches...there is
an interesting weather spot in South Wyoming that I have visited. When you
leave I-80 at Laramie and continue west along Wyoming Route 130 through the
Medicine Bow Mountains, you reach the town of Centennial. NE and East winds
can pile up against that higher terrain and enhance their snowfall. They got
7 inches Sunday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had an exciting afternoon
as two of our grandkids dropped by for a visit. It is a red-letter day for
her when any children come by. She relates to them very much. Lots of
excitement on one of our walks yesterday when a neighborhood dog who wants
to play with Molly so bad, but is too aggressive, scares the wits out of
her. He bounded out of the hedgerow, became airborne and landed right on top
of Miss Molly before I even saw him. That little girl was terrified. She
almost climbed up my leg to be rescued. In the meantime, she had wound the
leash around my ankles and I partially fell to the ground. I grabbed Molly,
tried to kick the other dog and brought her home in my arms. Her tiny heart
was beating like a little drum. Out for another walk early this morning. We
met a mosquito flying down the walking track. I had my machine gun ready
(the little blue scoop), but he flew right by and didn't say a word. Still
don't understand why two mosquitoes were allowed on the ark, but life goes
on.

...Summer Type Fare Ahead...

GOOD MORNING: A significant upper level disturbance will bring a good chance of showers and thunderstorms to Alabama tonight and Tuesday morning. After that, we will remain in the midst of a relatively unstable airmass into the weekend, giving us chances of showers and thunderstorms each day.

UPPER DISTURBANCE: Any patchy fog out there this morning will burn off quickly. Cirrus clouds from thunderstorm activity to the west of the area will blow across at times, giving us partly cloudy skies. There are some differences in the model solutions regarding the timing of the precipitation. Indications are that the main activity will occur tonight, with rain and storms reaching western sections of the state during the evening. The weather should move across the state overnight tonight and during the day on Tuesday.

REST OF THE WEEK: A warm, humid and unstable airmass will remain in place over Alabama behind the disturbance. This will give us a chance of showers and storms during the peak heating times of the daylight hours. Activity should be isolated to scattered in nature.

MAY RAIN FORETELLS FLORIDA HURRICANE SEASON: A meteorologist at the NWS Miami has linked the amount of rain that falls in Florida in May and the probability that a hurricane will make landfall in the state during the hurricane season. When the rainfall exceeds the average five inches in May, the chance of a hurricane hitting the Peninsula decreases. Last May was dry, with just two inches. Then four hurricanes hit the state. Fourteen inches fell in May 2003, and only one tropical storm bothered the state. May 1992 was the second driest ever and voila, Hurricane Andrew. Betsy came in the driest May ever. We will have to see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1905: Eighty seven people were killed in a tornado at Snyder OK. The tornado’s roar could be heard twelve miles away. Total path length forty miles. This ranks as the second worst tornado in Oklahoma history.
