GOOD AFTERNOON: Going to spend a great deal of time on the tropics today
as things are heating up again.

OUR WEATHER: Our cold front is running out of steam over Central Alabama.
It is not going to give us much in the way of relief from daytime heat.
Some drier air will make more nice overnight lows tonight, with readings in
the 60s in most locations. But expect a steady diet of 90s through midweek,
along with dry conditions as high pressure holds sway. But I think we will
be thankful for that high pressure as you will see in a minute.

OPHELIA: Tropical Storm Ophelia made her closest approach to southeastern
Massachusetts this morning, passing less than 100 miles southeast of the
island of Nantucket. The storm will quickly lose tropical characteristics
as it moves rapidly northeast heading toward the British Isles by midweek.

TROPICS STORY #2: Satellite imagery this morning indicates that Tropical
Depression Seventeen has formed east of the Windward Islands. The pulsing
blob of thunderstorms has been gradually getting better organized under a
more favorable upper wind pattern. Air Force reconnaissance will
investigate this afternoon.. This system is forecast by the GFDL model to
rapidly become a hurricane. This model also forecasts a quick turn to the
north to the east of the islands and no threat to the U.S. Needless to
say, we will be watching this one carefully.

TROPICS STORY #3: This one will turn out to be the biggest story of the
three. Low pressure north of the Greater Antilles is forecast to become a
tropical depression north of the Dominican Republic during the next twenty
four hours. This depression is forecast by the GFDL model to become a
hurricane by Sunday night. It will pass across the Central Bahamas and just
south of Andros Island Tuesday morning. It then depicts the frightening
scenario of a rapidly strengthening hurricane in the Florida Straits between
the Keys and Cuba that goes Category Five Wednesday. It then moves into
the Gulf as a powerful hurricane. Where is goes from there is subject to
conjecture. We do know that a strong ridge of high pressure is forecast to
be to our west, hopefully keeping a protective shield over the southern
United States.

ON THIS DATE IN 1876... In Swan Quarter, North Carolina, a historical
marker stands as a memorial to the Providence Methodist Church, "moved by
the hand of God." In the spring of 1876, the townspeople in Swan Quarter
selected a piece of property for a new church near the center of the town.
Much to their chagrin, the owner of the property refused to sell them the
piece of land, at any price. As the congregation dedicated a small, frame
building on a piece of land on the edge of town on September 14th, a
hurricane was on the prowl near Cuba. As the hurricane made landfall on the
16th, it piled the waters of Pamlico Sound into the small town, flooding it
with several feet of water. The storm tide lifted the church building and
transported it toward the center of town, depositing it on the property that
the church had originally chosen. Convinced by the "sign from God," the
reluctant owner signed the property over to the congregation.

...More Warmth Ahead...

GOOD MORNING: One of Birmingham's best food festivals continues this
weekend on the city's Southside. The 33rd annual Greek Festival continues
today from 10:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 307
19th Street South. Enjoy spectacularly good food, live Greek music and
dancing. The proceeds will benefit Hurricane Katrina victims.

OUR FORECAST: Expect a little morning fog and clouds today, with a chance
of a shower, giving way to sunshine, warm temperatures and lowering
humidity. Lows tonight will fall well into the 60s in most locations. Warm
and dry weather will continue into midweek as high pressure dominates our
weather.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving to the northeast of the
coast of the northeastern United States this morning. The system will bring
tropical storm force winds to southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island as
well as Nova Scotia before it moves out to sea. The strong tropical wave
approaching the Lesser Antilles has the potential to develop as does another
wave approaching the Bahamas. Wave #1 should move toward the East Coast or
out to sea. #2 will move westward, eventually crossing into the southern
Gulf and toward Mexico.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: When Auburn hosts Ball State at 1:30 at Jordan Hare
Stadium, there will be a chance of a shower with kickoff temperature around
85 degrees. UAB will host Jacksonville at Legion Field this evening (6:00
kickoff); under a clear sky the temperature will fall from near 80 at
kickoff to near 70 by the end of the game. Alabama plays South Carolina in
Columbia this afternoon beginning at 2:30. The kickoff temperature will be
near 88 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Impressive Hurricane Hugo made landfall on the
island of Guadeloupe in the Leeward Islands. Hugo had briefly attained
Category Five status over the Atlantic, but was a Category Four before it
struck the islands. Hugo would strike St. Croix the next morning and Puerto
Rico that evening. Hugo would do $10 billion in damage, with $5 billion of
that in South Carolina.

WELCOME RAINS FOR SOME FOLKS: Not everybody got rain, but some
parts of Alabama received some beneficial amounts today. Some of the
heaviest rain was over the west-central part of the state. Based on radar
estimates more than 2 inches fell in some areas in a relatively short time.
A year ago, Hurricane Ivan was playing havoc in our area during the
afternoon and evening.

The showers and storms were moving toward the SE. Meanwhile to the
NW, we look for a "cold front" to approach. It is not really a "cold" front,
but it will bring us cooler nights and lower humidity in the daytime. The
front has slowed somewhat and it may not reach Central Alabama until
Saturday morning. However, we believe all the ingredients for showers and
thunderstorms will have moved out ahead of the front, so we expect dry
weather for Saturday. The rest of the weekend looks dry with mostly
sunshine. Low temperatures will sink back into the mid 60s over the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Ball State University will be in Auburn for a
1:30 kickoff Saturday. It should be mostly sunny with near 90 to start the
game. Ball State is based in Muncie, Indiana and is named after the Ball
brothers (5 of them!). About an hour later, at 2:30 CDT, the Alabama-South
Carolina game will be in Columbia. It should be partly sunny with about 92
at kickoff. UAB will play Jacksonville at Legion Field in an evening game.
It should be 82 and clear for the 6:00 p.m. kickoff.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We can more or less say goodbye to Tropical
Storm Ophelia although she may cause some problems Saturday out on Cape Cod.
Way out in the Atlantic, a tropical wave 550 miles ESE of the Southern
Windward Islands may become a tropical depression in the next day or so as
it moves WNW. A large area of showers and thunderstorms were near the
Dominican Republic and extends ENE into the Atlantic for several hundred
miles. Slow development is possible for the next day or two. Our beloved
Gulf of Mexico is completely quiet. Sea surface temperatures are in the
82-86 range.

WIPING OFF MY DESK: I really did have to, because I spilled a whole
can of diet rootbeer all over my paperwork...105 in Laredo was the hottest
yesterday...it was 24 this morning in Stanley, Idaho...seems like that town
in the Sawtooth Mountains has cornered the market on being the cold
spot...up in NW Canada, a cold 13 this morning at Alert...big storms in Ohio
produced 4.45 inches of rain in Dayton...in West Arkansas, another 1.31
inches brought the two-day total in Ft. Smith to 4.45 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A visit by three more grandkids
yesterday wore Molly out again, so I did not have to play with her as much.
Sounds like I am overjoyed to get relieved of that duty. Really, I am not. I
love every minute playing with her when I am not too busy. On our early
morning walk, we finally heard two old crows again. They seem to hang around
a day or two then disappear for a week. We do not like for them to be
gone...another encounter with the community cat. He saw Molly coming down
the walking track and crouched down behind a step trying to hide. Molly
immediately dashed down the steps, but the cat would not move. She quickly
got the message. She knows which side her bread is buttered on. She turned
around and came back to me and was ready to take off again. Will have time
for a lot of ball playing and walking Saturday. I am going to drag her out
of bed very, very early. Life goes on.

...A Few Spots Get Wet Today...

A surface front will pass through Alabama today, bringing the chance of
scattered showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet
today is about one in three, and where the showers and storms develop,
rainfall amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch are possible. This is not
going to be a widespread, beneficial rain event, but at least some places
will get enough rain to settle the dust.

WEEKEND: Dry air moves in tonight, and the weekend will feature sunny warm
days, clear cool nights, and low humidity values. Some of the cooler places
could easily reach the 50s early Sunday morning.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Ophelia is creeping northeastward just off the
middle Atlantic coast; the system should be east of Cape Cod by tomorrow
night. Elsewhere, two tropical waves could become tropical depressions
today; one just north of Puerto Rico, and another one about 700 miles east
of the Windward Islands. The next two names for the season are Philippe and
Rita.

FOOTBALL: Any evening showers should be over by the time the high school
games begin tonight. Temperatures will fall through the 70s.

Auburn hosts Ball State tomorrow at 1:30 at Jordan Hare Stadium; the sky
will be sunny during the game with a kickoff temperature around 85 degrees.
UAB will host Jacksonville at Legion Field tomorrow evening (6:00 kickoff);
under a clear sky the temperature will fall from near 80 at kickoff to near
70 by the end of the game. And, Alabama plays South Carolina in Columbia
tomorrow beginning at 2:30. The kickoff temperature will be near 88 degrees.

ONE YEAR AGO: Hurricane Ivan rolled into Alabama. More on our weather blog.

TIME REALLY FLIES: Difficult to realize that the one-year
anniversary of powerful Hurricane Ivan is tonight. It is actually past
midnight and officially is on September 16. The eye started moving onshore
around 2 a.m. I will never forget it. I was on marathon radio duty in the
33/40 weather center watching with amazement the continuous radar and
satellite information. Ivan devastated the Baldwin County coast and around
Pensacola. The center moved up through Alabama causing widespread damage. He
remained a hurricane as far north as Perry County. Wind gusts were estimated
at 90 mph as far inland as Demopolis. Widespread flooding also with as much
as 10 inches in Jefferson County. There was 8.65 inches in Vestavia Hills
and 8.97 in Trussville.

While we are on the tropical subject, today Hurricane Ophelia
continues to spin off the coast of North Carolina, but seems to be edging
away from the coast. Much rainfall has occurred-as much as 12 inches in some
areas and the wind damage reports will likely be extensive. Elsewhere, a
vigorous tropical wave 900 miles ESE of the Windward Islands is growing
stronger and may be a tropical depression later today or Friday. We are also
concerned about a nervous weather area NE of Puerto Rico. We fear that one
of these may eventually get into the Gulf of Mexico. Way too early to make
predictions.

ALABAMA NOW: Some places may get some rain. Scattered showers were
developing over the northern counties this afternoon. Later this afternoon
and this evening we may see a few of those into Central Alabama. However,
our best chance of showers and maybe a thunderstorm will be tomorrow as a
cold front pushes down into the state. Many areas will remain dry, but this
is our better chance since Katrina wet us down. By Saturday, much drier air
will replace the more humid air we now have accompanied by sunshine through
the weekend with cooler nights. We were still under an air quality alert
today.

WRAP UP: 105 in Wink, Texas was Wednesday's hottest...chill spots
this morning included Stanley, Idaho with 23 and Eagle, Alaska with 27...big
thunderstorms in the central part of the country overnight...2 inches of
rain fell on Tulsa and 3.15 at Ft. Smith, Arkansas...the SPC has the
northwest quarter of Alabama outlooked for a slight risk of severe
thunderstorms.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was a delight to get to meet Tonks
last night. He is the new one-year old Phantom Poodle belonging to Gene and
Gerry Harris. He replaces their Yorkie, Divot, that was accidentally run
over by a neighbor last year. He let me rub his head a long time. He has
that aristocratic look, whereas Molly looks like an ordinary dog (but we
love her dearly)...as usual, out walking Little Miss Molly early this
morning. We could tell instantly that it was warmer and the dew point was
higher. However, Molly is an all-weather dog. She loves her walks so much
that she does not care if it is 10 above zero or 90 above. She had her
inspector cap on this morning which means she stopped and reversed direction
numbers of times. I am sure that half-mile walk was over one mile...we met
Peanut who is another shih-tzu. He and Molly got to rub noses for a while
and chase each other round and round. I still cannot understand how Molly
can run with her front feet moving like a Tennessee walking horse, while her
back feet are loping like a kangaroo. I tried that, but it did not work.
Life goes on.

...A Few Showers Could Show Up...

An approaching front could trigger a few widely scattered showers across
Alabama during the next 36 hours. The best chance of showers and storms will
be over the far northern part of the state, but a few widely scattered ones
could show up as far south as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Anniston.
Rainfall, however, should be rather light and spotty, due to limited
moisture and weakening upper air support. If you get enough rain to settle
the dust, consider yourself fortunate.

THE WEEKEND: A surge of dry air moves into the state setting up a dry
weekend with sunny warm days and clear cool nights. While most places will
drop into the 60 to 64 degree range early Saturday and Sunday, some of the
cooler spots could easily reach the mid to upper 50s. The first few days of
next week looks dry as well.

TROPICS: Slow-poke category one hurricane Ophelia will move slowly northeast
across the Outer Banks of North Carolina today with lots of wind and rain.
Elsewhere, a strong tropical wave about 1000 miles east of the Windward
Islands continues to become better organized as it moves to the west, and a
tropical storm is expected to form in this region over the next few days. It
should wind up in the Caribbean by the coming weekend. The name will be
Philippe.

SEPTEMBER HEAT: Montgomery reached 93 degrees yesterday. The high was 92 at
Birmingham, Decatur, Huntsville, Mobile, Tuscaloosa, and Muscle Shoals.
ROAMING: Fort Smith, Arkansas was soaked with 3.47" of rain yesterday.
Thunderstorm winds blew a roof off a house near Truscott, Texas. Hottest
spot in the nation yesterday was Wink, Texas with 105 degrees.

YEARNING FOR RAINDROPS: And we may finally see some. It is almost a
coin flip to say if a shower or thunderstorm could show up this far south
this evening. We think not, although a few could get into the Tennessee
Valley. This afternoon there were some scattered showers and storms as close
by as Northern Mississippi. They were the leftovers from a night of showers
and storms through the Central Plains.

As a cold front tries to reach North Alabama Friday, we could see
some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms both tomorrow and Friday. We
do not foresee our much needed widespread drenching, however. A lot of
places will remain dry. The "cold" front will push on down into South
Alabama Saturday and our weather will become mostly sunny again with lower
humidity and some cooler nights. That should improve the quality of air. A
Code Orange Alert was still in effect today for particulates.

TOUCHING BASES ELSEWHERE: The weather action across the USA is
picking up partially due to the coming change in season plus, of course,
Hurricane Orphelia. She was moving ever so slowly just off the North
Carolina coast this afternoon with sustained winds of 85 mph and gusts over
100. Lots of heavy rain has drenched Eastern North Carolina with over 9
inches in places causing washed out roads over the SE part of the state and
lots of trees and power lines down. She will continue to skirt the North
Carolina coast and then move out to sea...meanwhile, numerous reports of
severe weather in the last 24 hours, especially from Oklahoma to North
Illinois, South Wisconsin and Michigan including three tornadoes. The Storm
Prediction Center had posted a moderate risk of severe weather over parts of
SW Oklahoma AND North Texas today. Even the extreme NW part of Alabama was
included in a slight risk overnight...up in the high country of Colorado,
residents of Leadville, Aspen and Climax may have thunder and lightning
tonight accompanied by snow showers as overnight temperatures dropped to
about 25...the USA low this morning was 22 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Two grandkids came by late yesterday
and played with Molly for two hours. When they left, she was wiped out again
and showed little interest in playing with me. Even when I tried to wake her
up for bedtime, all she would do was moan, groan, stretch and fall back to
sleep...great news from a daily reader and our good friends. Gene and Gerry
Harris have a new beautiful dog named Tonks. He is a one-year old 11-pound
phantom poodle. Gene says that Tonks has a lot of style. They wanted a
Yorkie, but that was not to be. This is especially good news. You may not
remember, but we reported last year that their much beloved Yorkie named
Divot was accidentally killed when they ran over their own dog. He was like
a member of the family, so it was a heart rendering situation. Only dog
lovers know that. We are happy for Gene and Gerry.

...Fifteen Days In A Row With No Rain...

A new day, but an old forecast for Alabama. No rain, hazy sunshine, and
afternoon temperatures above normal. We also need to mention that a code
orange air quality alert continues today for Jefferson and Shelby counties
due to the potential for particulate pollution. This means air quality could
be unhealthy for those with asthma, or other respiratory problems.

We will introduce the chance of a few isolated showers or thunderstorms
tomorrow and Friday thanks to a weak front passing through, but with only
limited moisture and little upper air support, the prospect for any real
beneficial rain for most places looks rather small.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A fresh supply of dry air moves into the state over the
weekend, with sunny warm days, clear cool nights, and low humidity values.

OLE OPHELIA: The storm just off the coast of the Carolinas regained
hurricane status late yesterday, and it is forecast to move over the Outer
Banks of North Carolina today as a category one hurricane. She will be swept
out to sea rapidly by the end of the week as strong upper air winds become
involved.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet at this point.

DRY DAYS: Birmingham's rainfall surplus for the year has vanished. Our total
of 38.80" for the year represents a deficiency of 0.57". The prospect for a
widespread rain event looks very small over the next seven to ten days.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Severe storms near Whitewater, Wisconsin yesterday
knocked down trees that injured a person on a motorcycle. Large hail covered
the ground for a while at Centerville, Iowa.

GULF OF MEXICO-FRIEND OR FOE? Well, she is both. She is one of our
main sources of rainfall but she can also brew up some nasty hurricanes. Did
you know that at her widest point, if overlaid on a USA map, she would
extend from Mobile to Philadelphia? She is quiet as a mouse now. More about
the lady in a couple of upcoming articles.

ALABAMA NOW: It is a hazy day with scattered clouds around, but dry
as a bone. Look for more of the same tomorrow. There will be some scattered
clouds, but mostly hazy sunshine. As a cold front, using that term loosely,
tries to push down into North Alabama Thursday night or Friday, we could see
a few showers or thunderstorms. It appears that moisture is going to be
extremely rationed, so a lot of areas will remain dry. By Saturday, we
expect the humidity to drop off again and return to mostly sunshine with
slightly cooler nights and warm days. See our day-by-day forecast.

DOGS, CATS AND HURRICANES: They do not exactly mix as we have seen
from Katrina. I want to thank Anne Laplante for asking us to mention that
the need for foster homes for displaced pets until they can be reunited with
their families is significant. People who love pets could open their homes,
if they are available, and take in some of these animals. Anne has received
several e-mails from her friends on the Greater Birmingham Humane Society
e-mail list outlining that. This information could reach a lot of folks if
they would contact the GBHS at www.gbhs.org or TEARS at
tearsanimalrescue.org.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Ophelia continues to be our only topic. All
morning she has moved only 3 or 4 mph and this afternoon was centered 120
miles ESE of Charleston or about 125 miles south of Wilmington, North
Carolina. Her sustained winds were 70 mph and, thanks to the Gulf Stream,
she could possibly reach hurricane force again. The track forecast still
carries her along the North Carolina coast and after reaching Cape Hatteras
she should move out into the open Atlantic.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: An important world event on this date in 1922
when the temperature reached 136 at Azizia, Libya. That is 2 degrees hotter
than the USA all-time high of 134 in Death Valley...there were frost
advisories in some of the high country of Wyoming and Colorado last
night-another sign that better times are ahead. It dropped to 22 this
morning at Big Piney, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE DESERT: It is beginning to look that way
outdoors. The grass is turning brown, some of the foliage is hinting of
brown and the grass covered areas crunch underneath your feet. Early morning
walk with Molly included an encounter with the CC (Community Cat), a big
stand off with Molly standing on her hind legs wanting to get at him. I
said, "Treat, treat, Molly," and those magic words started her toward
home...we have had Little Miss Molly three years and I played with her more
yesterday than any day since we have had her. Finally, at 10:52 last night
during a tug-of-war on the couch, she suddenly released the ball we were
wrestling over, curled up on her blanket and was asleep in 10 seconds. Was
she pooped! Only downside playing with her more is that the little girl
raises the bar and expects even more attention, but life goes on.

...Alabama Needs Some Rain...

For most Alabama communities today will be the 14th consecutive day with no
rain, and the prospects for beneficial rain look very small for the next 15
days. This could be one of the driest Septembers on record if this
continues.

We will bring in the chance of a few showers on Thursday and Friday thanks
to an approaching front, but with very limited moisture and no upper support
the showers should be isolated. That front will reach central Alabama and
fizzle out this weekend as the main storm track across North America remains
well to the north.

Here is a list of the driest Septembers on record in Birmingham:

September 1955 0.00"
September 1927 0.03"
September 1899 0.05"
September 1931 0.14"
September 1984 0.16"

Afternoon temperatures will remain normal for the next few days; we expect
low 90s today and tomorrow, with upper 80s by Friday and over the weekend
ahead. Nights will remain relatively pleasant, with lows in the 60s.

TROPICS: Ophelia is still hanging around just off the coast of the
Carolinas; it is expected to move across the Outer Banks of North Carolina
as a minimal hurricane tomorrow, and then back out to sea late this week.
Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet now.

ROAMING: Miami Beach, FL was soaked with 2.13" of rain yesterday. Hottest
place in the nation was Laredo, TX with 102. Coldest in the "lower 48"
yesterday morning was Stanley, ID with a frosty 18 degrees.

AUTUMN COLOR OR THE LACK THEREOF: We do not know the answer to that
yet, but our recent dry weather is not conducive to the best color. Today is
the 13th day in a row with no rain for most of the area. We see very little
chance for the next several days, although a few widely scattered showers or
thunderstorms will show up Thursday and Friday as a weak cold front tends to
stall somewhere in North Alabama.

To have outstanding autumn color, it is an intricate balance on how
gradual our autumn cool down is and whether or not we get sufficient rain
into autumn. The amount of sunshine also figures in. I do not fully
understand it, but I am hoping for the best.

The atmosphere over Alabama has gradually become polluted with
particulates due to the sluggish wind and stagnant air mass. A Code Orange
Alert was in effect today for the Birmingham Metro Area due to particulates.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The only thing on the plate today is Ophelia who
has now been downgraded again to a tropical storm. She has been
flip-flopping a lot. She may reach hurricane force again. This afternoon she
was centered about 200 miles ESE of Charleston or about 255 miles SSW of
Cape Hatteras, North Carolina with sustained winds of 70 mph. She was moving
very slowly NW at 4 mph. NE winds were gusting to 33 mph at Wilmington.
Frying Pan Shoals had NE gusts to 50 with 15-foot waves. The latest track
forecast has her skirting the North Carolina coast beginning Wednesday
morning.

FINAL NOTES: Some temperatures I wanted to mention...100 was the
hottest in the USA yesterday at Wink, Texas and Gila Bend, Arizona. That is
better than that 115-120 stuff that has been so common...it was 20 this
morning in Stanley, Idaho-another sign of the changing season...it was
expected to be 113 in Basrah, Iraq today...it was 17 at Alert in Northern
Canada and 31 in Resolute with drifting snow...this is the date that
Hurricane Frederic reached the Alabama coast near Dauphin Island in 1979.
Later there would be widespread trees and power lines down in the Birmingham
area. Bill Murray has written extensively about this on the weather blog.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly surely cannot
complain about how much playtime she has had over the weekend. And, there
was a first. When I got home from church last night, I played ball with her
so long that she called time out and stretched out on the carpet and went
sound asleep in 15 seconds. She was so pooped. She had chased the balls all
across the living area probably 25 or 30 times until her tongue was hanging
out. She sure did have fun, however. I let her rest a few minutes and got
her up for more games. She was totally wiped out when she finally went to
bed. Have played a lot with her this morning also trying to build up some
points with her. A great walk this morning. She simply gets beside herself
on her first walk of the day. Life goes on.

...Another Warm, Dry Day...

AIR QUALITY ALERT: The Alabama Partners for Clean Air warn that there is a
CODE ORANGE air quality alert for today in Jefferson and Shelby Counties.
Stagnant high pressure over Alabama has allowed particulates to collect in
the lowest layers of the atmosphere. Take action by car pooling, limiting
your trips, mowing the lawn on another day and curtailing all outdoor
burning.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: High pressure centered over West Virginia is in
charge of our weather this morning. In the mid-levels of the atmosphere,
high pressure is centered over Alabama. Hurricane Ophelia is located a
little less than 250 miles south southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
this morning. A weak northerly flow is present over Alabama on the back
side of the hurricane's circulation.

Ophelia will have no impact on Alabama's weather, except for that northerly
flow The hurricane is expected to gradually begin a slow west northwest,
then northerly and eventually north northeasterly track during the next 24
hours. This will bring the center near Morehead City, North Carolina on
Wednesday. It will then more over the Outer Banks and out to sea.

The upper level high will weaken as a trough moves out of the western U.S.
It will allow a front to move our way late in the week, giving a chance of
showers and storms Thursday and Friday. High pressure will build back in
after that.

GHOSTTOWN: The town of Port Leon, Florida cannot be found on a modern map
of the Sunshine State. On this date in 1843, a hurricane inundated the town
with a ten foot storm surge. Almost all of the buildings in the town were
destroyed. One person drowned in the town and at least a dozen people were
killed in surrounding areas. The townspeople voted unanimously not to
rebuild, but to create a new town called Newport.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Today saw the end of a 37 day streak of consecutive
90 degree days in Birmingham. It is the longest such streak in the history
of the Magic City.

GOOD AFTERNOON: The name Ophelia means helper. It is the name of a
character in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. It is also the name of an album
by singer Natalie Merchant. I love Natalie Merchant. Ophelia did not
receive the popular acclaim that Tigerlily, her super successful debut album
did. The title track is a haunting, melancholy song rescued only by her
beautiful voice.

HURRICANE OPHELIA... Never trust a stationary hurricane. That is one of my
old adages. But I don't think we have anything to worry about from Ophelia
here in Alabama. In fact, the system will only enhance the hot, dry weather
we are currently experiencing. Now folks in the Carolinas and up the
eastern seaboard should be monitoring the storm carefully. The hurricane is
trapped between two high pressure systems, waiting for the light to change
so that it can go somewhere. By all indications, that will be north and
then northeast, mainly away from land save for a brush with the North
Carolina Outer Banks. That beautiful and wild place seems to be synonymous
with hurricanes in September. Turns out being stationary is a good thing
when it comes to some hurricanes, and we can count Ophelia in that lot. As
the storm sits and spins, it churns up water from the depths. It is called
upwelling. In this case, that deeper water is cooler and limits the storms
ability to strengthen. We are hopeful that Ophelia will stay in her box and
stay off the list of retired Atlantic Hurricane names. Only one O storm has
ever been retired. Can you guess who it is?

THE WEEK AHEAD... High pressure is centered over the Vermont/New York state
border near the town of Middlebury, Vermont . A big ridge extends
southwestward from this cell all the way back to the upper Texas coast.
Alabama is right under the apex of this ridge, giving us the current spate
of fine weather we are enjoying. We are also enjoying the protection of a
large bubble of high pressure that is located over the Deep South. Dry air
has been giving us large daily temperature ranges, with comfortable
overnight lows and very warm to hot afternoon readings. That is not going
to change anytime soon. When Ophelia begins her northward march, our winds
will actually become more northerly, which will give our hot temperatures a
free pass to continue for a couple of more days. The herald of change is a
low pressure trough in the upper atmosphere that will erode the upper high
and allow a cold front to come our way by Friday, accompanied by a chance of
showers/storms, lasting into Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Shortly after 3:00 pm (HST), Hurricane Iniki made
landfall on the south shore of the island of Kauai with wind gusts to 160
mph. Iniki's central pressure was 945 millibars. It unleashed its fury
primarily on Kauai, and more than 90 percent of the homes, buildings and
structures on the island sustained storm damage. $1.6 billion in damage,
but very few fatalities due to excellent warnings. Hurricanes are not
uncommon in the Pacific, but most of them remain east or pass south of the
islands. In spite of only four storms hitting the state in the prior forty
years, preparations were generally good.
