...Freeze Possible Sunday, Monday Nights...

We go from severe weather on Friday to the possibility of a freeze
Sunday night and Monday night Welcome to spring in Alabama!

YOUR SATURDAY: A cold front swept through the area last
night, sparking a few overnight thunderstorms. A few severe
thunderstorm warnings were required, but other than some small hail
and lots of lightning and thunder, no problems were reported. Behind
the front, which is located over the Wiregrass of Southeast Alabama
this afternoon, skies have been clearing from the northwest. A good
bit of moderate rain continued just behind the front is a
southwesterly flow aloft. Our winds will shift around to the
northwest during the afternoon and it will become breezy as colder air
starts flowing into the area.

YOUR SUNDAY: And that will be the story for tomorrow:
cold air advection. Sunday may start off cloudy as low clouds and
fog try to form overnight. Expect a mix of sun and clouds during the
day with a chill northwest wind that it will make feel even colder
than the low 50s that the mercury will struggle to reach. Some areas
may not get out of the 40s! With the big upper trough and low
extending from the Great Lakes into the Deep South, all kinds of April
surprises may occur. In addition to the Spring chill, some wraparound
moisture and upper level energy will conspire to produce a few
sprinkles or snow flurries across the area, especially over Northeast
Alabama. Temperatures tomorrow night will make the lower to middle
30s. I think there will be enough wind to keep temperatures above
freezing, but a freeze watch has been issued. Agricultural interests
should monitor conditions and be prepared to take precaution to protect
vulnerable vegetation tomorrow night.

MONDAY: Same problem Monday night. High pressure will
be settling into the area after another day of cold air advection when
temperatures again will struggle to get out of the 40s as a cold
northwest wind continues to blow. A freeze watch is in effect for
Monday night also as calm winds and clear skies will allow for
effective radiation of heat back to space and the mercury will fall to
near or below freezing. It will not be a hard freeze, but it could be
damaging to unprotected vegetation. Commercial growers and backyard
gardeners should plan accordingly. A few snow flurries could linger
into Monday morning, but no problems are anticipated.

REST OF THE WEEK: A warming trend will begin on Tuesday
as our winds shift back around to the south. We will be back in the
70s by Wednesday. We should remain through much of Friday before
showers and storms arrive Friday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1943: During the early morning hours of
April 12, 1943, a storm system brought two significant tornadoes to
North Alabama. The first destroyed much of the Marion County town of
Hackleburg. Residents described the sound as that of an "unscheduled
freight train." Sixteen of the seventeen businesses in the town were
destroyed along with eighty five homes. The four people who died in
the tornado were two couples in two separate homes. Tom Grazulis
retroactively rates the tornado as an F4. A 3 a.m. tornado struck the
northern edge of the Cullman County town of Vinemont, killing two.

...Stormy Friday...

Severe thunderstorms plagued Alabama on Friday ahead of an approaching
upper level trough and cold front. A line of storms intensified as it
approached West Alabama during the late morning and with sufficient
shear, discrete supercells formed ahead of the main line. These
storms started to become severe around noon over Northwest Alabama as
a storm started spinning in Fayette County. The value of ground truth
became apparent as spotters Brett Adair, Eric Parker and Evan Hyde
transmitted live images of a wall cloud from corridor X near Carbon
Hill. The view prompted the NWS to reissue a tornado warning they had
allowed to expire. This long tracked supercell produced reports of
funnel clouds and some damage all the way into Northeast Alabama.
There were scary moments as a supercell over Western Jefferson County
looked like it was going to deliver a repeat performance of the April
8, 1998 tornado. One strong storm caused some significant damage in
the Gadsden area, but fortunately, no serious injuries have been
reported. There was some big hail, with baseball sized hail reported
near Curry in Walker County and near Eastwood Mall in Birmingham.

CHANGES AHEAD: Today will start off cloudy with a
little light rain over southeastern sections. Some clearing will occur
fairly quickly, but there will be periods of clouds mixed in. Highs
will make the upper 60s across Central Alabama. Winds will pick up
out of the west and eventually shift around to the northwest averaging
10-18 mph occasionally pushing over 20 mph. Readings tonight will
drop into the upper 30s, but the winds will stay up during the night,
averaging about 5 mph through the overnight.

SUNDAY: Expect variable clouds with really chilly
conditions tomorrow. With periods of clouds and a strong northwest
wind averaging 10-20 mph, the mercury will have a hard time reaching
50 degrees in some locations. There could be a few sprinkles,
especially over the northeastern quarter of the state.

THE WEEK AHEAD: It will be quite chilly Monday morning,
with lows in the middle 30s. It the winds died out, we would be
candidates for a freeze then, but the best chances will come Tuesday
morning as high pressure builds in. Monday will feature more clouds
and a chance of a few sprinkles or snow flurries, especially over
northeastern sections. Highs again will struggle into the 50s. A
freeze is a good bet for Tuesday morning, with calm winds and clear
skies allowing temperatures to fall to near or just below freezing.
Agricultural interests will have to monitor this situation carefully.
The rest of the week will feature warming temperatures and dry weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 1956: The first tornado warning based on
radar indications is issued for the Bryan and College Station area of
TX. SELS issued a tornado forecast for parts of central and eastern
Texas. This prompted the operators of a Texas A&M weather radar to
turn on their set and monitor storms for the characteristic hook
echo. When one was observed on the radar moving toward the Bryan/
College Station area, the police and local radio station were warned.
Two tornadoes touched down in the Bryan area.-

...Second Stormy Friday In A Row...

CHANCE OF FROST BY TUESDAY MORNING: Remember last
Friday when it seemed like every thunderstorm in the world had
congregated here in Alabama and most of them were severe? Some
counties came under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings or even Tornado
Warnings time and time again.

Fast forward to this Friday. Here we go again. A number
of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued this afternoon in NW
Alabama. Tornado Warnings were also issued for parts of Lamar, Marion,
Winston, Walker and Cullman Counties. A Tornado Watch was posted for
18 NW Alabama counties until 4:00 p.m. As we write this around 2:00
p.m., we think there is a good chance that a watch of some type will
be extended eastward into other parts of East and South Alabama later.
Dangerous weather may reach the Birmingham area after midafternoon.

Meanwhile, off to the west, cooler air is on the way. In
fact, before the event is over, we may want to call it colder air.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the evening diminishing
later tonight as it turns cooler. All the showers should end Saturday
morning and west winds of 12-25 mph will bring in much cooler air. By
Sunday morning, temperatures will be in the upper 30s with highs on
Sunday only about 55 with some scattered light rain.

We want to say this with a whisper, but there is actually
a slight chance of a few snowflakes over NE Alabama late Sunday night
or early Monday morning.

FROST CONCERNS: If we have frost, it will be on Tuesday
morning. By that time, the sky will be clear with little or no wind
and a high-pressure area centered over us. We are calling for low
temperatures around freezing across Central Alabama, but some of the
colder valleys could have upper 20s, especially further north.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Raging blizzard conditions over
the Upper Midwest and part of the Northern Plains today…especially
hard hit was Duluth on the west tip of Lake Superior in NE Minnesota…
they had whiteout conditions with winds as high as 62 mph…along the
Lake Superior shore in the Duluth area, waves were as high as 16 feet
and winds gusting near 60…21 inches of snow on the ground at Upson,
Wisconsin and 16 inches at Orr, Minnesota…Guthrie, Oklahoma 5.38
inches of rain from this last violent storm system.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: 2:22 p.m. Little Miss Molly
strolls into my office and asked me to let her sit on my desk. She
loves to sit there looking out the large window. Meanwhile, she was
wagging her tail and sweeping off the keyboard on my Apple computer.
2:26 p.m. She decided to plop down and take a nap. 2:29 p.m. She
thought she heard a slight noise, stood up and there was her little
boyfriend, the 1-year old Yorkie Dino passing by with his grandad. I
have never seen her snap to attention and cry so much, because she
wanted to go play with him. We went outside and they played so
vigorously that Molly finally plopped down in the grass to get some
rest. Just another little slice of time with a precious little dog.
Too bad us humans cannot enjoy simple things. Life goes on.
