...Storms Tonight; Sunday...

Red sky in morning, sailor take warning is the old piece of weather
folklore. This morning is a prime example of how it works across
Central Alabama. Altocumulus clouds ahead of an approaching
disturbance to the west of Alabama glowed a beautiful red in the
morning sky at sunrise across the eastern part of the area as clouds
thickened to the west. This led to a brilliant daybreak scene. This
situation is what the saying is talking about. Departing sunshine to
the east, arriving clouds in the west foretells an approaching storm
system. Red sky at night, sailor's delight is the converse. Clouds
departing to the east with a nice sunset to the west foretells
improving weather. Doesn't work all the time, but this morning was
perfect.

INCREASING RAIN AND STORMS: A disturbance pushing east into Alabama
spread clouds and showers into the state this morning. The
precipitation was light. Hopefully showers will be departing at
kickoff of the Alabama spring game. Auburn could see a shower during
their game, but it will be short and light. Rain and storms will be
on the increase tonight as a warm front lifts northward. No severe
weather is expected. We could see a few storms forming on Sunday
afternoon as we will be in the warm sector of the low pressure system
to our northwest. A couple of them could become severe, but it
appears the best chance will be Sunday evening ahead of a cold front.
Even then, significant problems are not expected.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: A big upper low will cause clouds and Monday and
Tuesday, with a little lingering light rain. Temperatures trends are
moving toward colder with the low close by. Highs will only be in the
60s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We could be in the 30s across much
of the area Wednesday morning. Hmmmm….

EWARN SERVICE ENDING: We are discontinuing our E-Warn service on
April 19… and asking all of our subscribers to head over to the new
National Weather Service iNWS service, which is very robust with more
options for you: http://inws.wrh.noaa.gov/. Like E-Warn, the service
is free and we have found it to be very reliable in recent weeks… give
it a shot. You choose a polygon for which you would like bulletins
sent to you by SMS or email. Just be aware that if you pick a large
area, you will get a LOT of warnings. You can also get Alabama watches
and warnings on Twitter through our E-Warn service there: http://www.twitter.com/ewarn

KIBBEE, GRAPE LEAVES AND SPINACH PIE, OH MY: The eleventh annual
Lebanese Food and Cultural Festival is today from 10 a.m. until 9:00
p.m. at Saint Elias Maronite Catholic Church on the Southside (836 8th

or dinner. Take out or dine in. No admission charge! Shuttle will
be available from UAB lot 15R.

ON THIS DATE IN 1815: The city of San Francisco was nearly destroyed
by the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. 5 square miles,
almost two-thirds of the young city was destroyed. The fires lasted
for three days. The flames were fanned by an unusual easterly wind.
The earthquake measured 8.3 on the Richter scale. A total of 315
people died in the earthquake and fire with another 350 missing and
presumed dead.

...Showers and Storms Return...

Changes are coming in our weather, and they will be obvious by this
afternoon. High pressure over Georgia has been holding the massed
moisture to the west of Alabama at bay, but that will end as we go
through the day. Our winds will increase out of the southeast, and
the Gulf of Mexico will be open for business. Clouds will be
increasing this afternoon, and a few showers will be possible west of
I-65 by afternoon. Look for highs to be in the 70s.

TONIGHT: Showers and storms will increase across the north and west
as the airmass becomes more unstable. Showers will be possible across
the south and east. Look for lows to range between the middle 40s and
middle 50s.

SEVERE WEATHER TOMORROW? A surface low will form over eastern Texas
later today and move to a position over the Missouri Bootheel by
Sunday morning. This is a very favorable position for severe weather
across Alabama, and that will be possible as numerous showers and
storms form. Temperatures will warm into the 70s, with dew points in
the 60s. Instability levels won't be off the scale, but they will be
high enough to warrant a risk for severe storms. Upper level wind
profiles are not too impressive either, but as we say when it comes to
spring in Alabama, expect the unexpected. The showers and storms will
push out of East Alabama overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A few showers will linger into Monday morning. Skies
will remain mostly cloudy through the day with a few peeks of sun
possible by late. Look for lows by Tuesday morning to be down into
the 40s. Tuesday should feature skies that become sunny. Sunshine
will be a primary feature for much of the remainder of the week.

A-DAY WEATHER: Both Auburn and Alabama will have spring football
games today. We believe little or no chance of rain for the Auburn
area. There will be a chance of some showers in Tuscaloosa this
afternoon. It might be advisable to take your rain gear if you are
heading to Bryant-Denny Stadium

ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVENTS OF THE YEAR: The eleventh annual Lebanese
Food and Cultural Festival is today from 10 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at
Saint Elias Maronite Catholic Church on the Southside (836 8th Street
South). Enjoy some fabulous homemade Lebanese food for lunch or
dinner. Take out or dine in. No admission charge! Shuttle will be
available from UAB lot 15R.

TORNADO SPOILS PERFECTLY GOOD TORNADO DRILL: On Saturday morning,
April 18, 1970, Civil Defense in the town of Plainview, Texas, south
of Amarillo, planned to conduct a tornado drill. Thirty two homes on
the west side of town were marked as having been hit by a fake
twister. There were plenty of simulated victims and damage. The Red
Cross was scheduled to conduct house to house searches in the wake of
the simulated disaster. But about eighteen hours before the drill was
supposed to happen, a real tornado struck the northeastern part of the
town. Miraculously, the tornado missed the hospital by a narrow
margin. Five people died. More on that significant tornado outbreak
on AlabamaWx.com.

...A Stormy Sunday...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of more changeable weather as we
have yet another storm system that will be approaching from the west.
By Sunday morning, an active low-pressure area should be centered over
Arkansas and Missouri with a cold front down to about Shreveport and
San Antonio. That same system will be pulling a warm front northward
from the Gulf of Mexico. Translation: while we do not expect very many
showers Saturday, we look for a lot of them on Sunday. A few of those
thunderstorms on Sunday could be strong to severe—the better chance of
that during the afternoon. By Monday, the cold front will be moving
out of Alabama, although we will have some leftover scattered showers,
mostly Monday morning.

LOOKING FOR GOOD WEATHER: That should come by midweek next week with
cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. We look for lows across North
and Central Alabama in the low to mid 40s Tuesday morning and nearly
that cool Wednesday morning. Humidity will be lower and both Tuesday
and Wednesday should have quite a bit of sunshine.

A-DAY GAMES: Both Auburn and Alabama will have those games tomorrow.
We believe little or no chance of rain for the Auburn area. There will
be a chance of some showers in Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon. It might
be advisable to take your rain gear.

SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK: The Storm Prediction Center has posted a
Slight Risk for the east half of Texas northward through the Texas
and Oklahoma Panhandle for this afternoon and tonight. A Tornado Watch
was in effect for SE Texas including the Houston/Galveston area.
Tomorrow much of Louisiana and East Texas will be under a slight risk
northward through parts of Oklahoma and Kansas. Finally, on Sunday,
the SPC has posted a Slight Risk for all of Mississippi, Alabama and
West Georgia and all of Tennessee, except the NE part around Bristol,
Kingsport and Knoxville.

LOOKING ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: We are still playing this game of
watching the snow depth at Whittier, Alaska and guessing when it will
all be melted. About two weeks ago they had 104 inches on the ground.
Now it is down to 90 inches. 94 was the hottest yesterday in Laredo
and Harlingen, Texas. Cold spots this morning included 12 above zero
at Grand Canyon Airport on the South Rim of Grand Canyon in Northern
Arizona. In Alaska, it was 8 below zero at Arctic Village and good old
Deadhorse.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I need to go back to my original family
game plan concerning holidays and birthdays. Because I had to work
around-the-clock shifts and change off days every month, we often
celebrated birth weeks instead of days and it was not unusual to
celebrate Christmas offset two or three days on each side of December
25. Sure have enjoyed my 77th birthday today. Long time friend, Chuck
Biddinger, treated me to lunch earlier this week and today Jason
Simpson met me in Trussville for another birthday meal. Sure do
appreciate the numerous good wishes. But, this is supposed to be about
Little Miss Molly. It is so much fun to watch her awaken every
morning. Her yawns are twice as big as her mouth. While she is doing
that, she will take her front paws and pull herself across the carpet
or the bed with her tummy rubbing on the floor to do her own belly
rub. This morning, as soon as she woke up, she got a 15-minute rub
down and belly rub from the majority owner and me. We are saddened
with our friends in Hueytown who lost 13-year-old little Miss Honey
this week. She was a jewel of a dog.

...Dry Weather For One More Day...

RAIN RETURNS OVER THE WEEKEND: We are still looking at a very nice
spring day across Alabama today; the sky will be partly sunny with a
high in the low to mid 70s. High cirrus clouds will advance into the
state during the day ahead of a storm system moving into the Great
Plains. This promises to make part of our weekend wet.

The sky will become mostly cloudy late tonight, and showers should
move into the western part of the state during the day tomorrow. At
this time, it looks like the best chance of showers tomorrow will be
generally west of I-65, although some rain could reach East Alabama by
mid to late afternoon. Then, rain and storms will be more widespread
statewide tomorrow night and Sunday. Most communities can expect one
inch of rain, but some places over Northwest Alabama could see around
two inches. In addition, a few strong storms will be possible Sunday,
but for now we don't expect a major problem with severe weather since
instability will be limited. But, we always have to watch any system
like this during mid-April. The rain will taper off Sunday night.

NEXT WEEK: We will begin the week with a mostly cloudy and cool day
Monday, thanks to a cold core upper trough over the Southeast U.S. A
little scattered light rain could linger into Monday morning,
especially over the northern third of the state. Temperatures will
have a hard time getting out of the 50s. The sky should clear on
Tuesday, and the rest of the week will be very nice with mostly sunny
mild days and clear nights.

A-DAY GAMES: The chance of rain at Auburn for tomorrow's A-Day game is
very small; the sky will be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 65
to 68 degree range during the game (kickoff is at 1:00 at Jordan-Hare
Stadium). For the Alabama A-Day game in Tuscaloosa (2:00 kickoff at
Bryant-Denny Stadium on ESPN), a few showers are likely during the
game with temperatures hovering between 67 and 70; you will need to
take the rain gear.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Historic river flooding was underway in Alabama;
several tributaries in the middle of the Tombigbee River Basin and the
lower half of the Black Warrior River Basin had the highest discharges
in 80 to 100 years. Downtown Northport was underwater, and severe
flooding was in progress at Demopolis and Selma.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for

...Showers and Storms By Weekend...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: More change is ahead for Alabama weather,
which is not unusual at all for this season. Weather systems tend to
move more rapidly across the country in March, April and May.

It was another cool morning across the state. A few of the valley
locations dropped into the 30s. It was 35 in Scrougout, 37 at Cullman
Airport and 39 in Pinson.

Now we head for milder weather and with that mildness will come some
more showers and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, look for another sunny
day tomorrow. Here in Central Alabama clouds will increase Friday
night and we believe we will see a few showers and thunderstorms
around midday or later. Those showers and storms will become more
numerous Saturday night. Sunday is not shaping up to be a very
pleasant day. Showers and storms will be fairly numerous at times with
locally heavy rain. This does not appear to be an excuse for more
severe weather although we cannot rule out a slight risk of some
strong storms during the day. Across Central Alabama, the storm total
of rain will be somewhere between 1 and 2 inches.

Still another cold front will move through Monday. We may have some
leftover morning showers until the front passes. By Tuesday, we will
have clearing weather with lows in the low to mid 40s and highs in the
60s. The dry weather should then last most of next week.

We are still ahead of the game for 2009 rain amounts. In fact,
Birmingham is still 2 inches ahead of average. Lake Purdy, one of the
main sources for the metro Birmingham water supply, is still at full
pool—in fact, slightly above.

ANOTHER BIG SNOW: While we can almost assuredly mark snow off the
list for the rest of this season, parts of the Mountain West were
getting very heavy snow. We received an interesting note from our
friend, Matt Marshall, in Willard, Utah. He reports this last storm,
which became all snow yesterday afternoon, produced the biggest flakes
he had ever seen. The individual flakes were literally 1 to 2 inches
across looking like full-size cotton balls. The North Utah Mountains
were expecting 2 to 4 feet out of this storm. At Alta, a famous ski
area in the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah, 29 inches of new snow
fell in the last 24 hours and now they have 133 inches on the ground.
Speaking of snow, Denver has received 31 inches this season—a little
less than average. Evergreen, Colorado reports 47 inches and Wheat
Ridge 65 inches. You can tell the changing season is underway. At
midday, only 3% of the land area in the good old USA had temperatures
below freezing.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was glad to get my little puppy
(well, she is six years old), but she will be a designated puppy the
rest of her life. When Molly gets home from a day at the beauty shop
she insists on more walks. Yesterday she had us out walking her six
times. On one of the walks, she stopped at every house where she knew
her friends live, but no one was in sight. She is truly a people dog
and I like that. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Over The Weekend...

DRY THROUGH TOMORROW: Very pleasant spring weather continues through
tomorrow, with mostly sunny mild days and clear cool nights. But,
things will change about the time the weekend arrives.

Clouds will thicken across Alabama late tomorrow night into Saturday,
and it now looks like showers will move into the state as the weekend
begins. The best chance of getting wet Saturday will be west of I-65,
but a few showers could move into East Alabama later in the day. Then,
rain and storms will be more widespread by Saturday night and Sunday
statewide. A few strong thunderstorms are possible Sunday, but for now
the severe weather parameters are not overly impressive. We are
projecting average rain amounts of one inch with our weekend system,
but isolated amounts to two inches are possible where stronger storms
develop.

NEXT WEEK: Rain should end Sunday night, but a deep upper trough will
be over Alabama Monday, which should set the stage for a mostly cloudy
and rather cool day for April, with a high only in the upper 50s. A
little light rain or drizzle will be possible Monday morning, but most
of the day will be dry. Then, the sky will clear on Tuesday, and at
this point the rest of the week looks dry with seasonal temperatures
for mid-April in Alabama.

A-DAY WEEKEND: Both Alabama and Auburn will hold their annual spring
scrimmage games this weekend; for the game at Tuscaloosa (2:00 p.m.
kickoff on ESPN), the sky will be cloudy and showers are possible
during the game, so you will need to take the rain gear. At Auburn
(1:00 p.m. kickoff), the sky will be mostly cloudy, but there is only
a small risk of a shower during the game. Temperatures at both game
sites should be in the 65 to 69 degree range.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: But I swear I sent it. Many federal tax returns
being loaded into a truck were blown away in Oklahoma City by a
violent thunderstorm with nearly 100-mph wind gusts. Will Roger's
Airport in Oklahoma City recorded wind gust to 93 mph, strongest there
in 24 years.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that

Alabama home and business needs one!

...Two More Sunny Days...

SHOWERS BY THIS WEEKEND: Temperatures this afternoon up over NE
Alabama were only in the 50s—a lot cooler than had been expected for
today. We can blame that on a problem that we have had for years
trying to determine how quick clearing takes place behind a cold
front. That front that moved through Alabama is now down to South
Florida and even down to the Yucatan Peninsula. However, there was a
glob of lower clouds that persist from extreme North Alabama all the
way up to Ohio and Pennsylvania. Those clouds were slowly eroding in
North Alabama, so overall we will have a clear cool night.

In places where the clouds gave up early, it was rather chilly this
morning. Lows were in the upper 30s and 40s. We only mention some lows
in the 30s:

34 Cottondale
37 Centreville, Lafayette
38 Tuscaloosa, Marion
39 Alabaster, Livingston, Opelika

Looks like mostly sunshine Thursday and much of Friday. Clouds return
on Saturday and we will need to mention a chance of showers and maybe
even a few thunderstorms. During the daylight hours we think most of
those will be limited to the west side of the state. There will be an
increase in showers Saturday night.

OUR MAIN RAIN EVENT: Starting at some point Saturday night through
Sunday, there will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms with
brisk south winds gusting up to 25mph. Much of Central Alabama should
receive a storm total of between 1 and 2 inches of rain. That will
simply add to our surplus. We are still more than 2 inches wetter than
average for 2009 in Birmingham as of today. After the storms, another
change to cooler starting Monday and still another cold front comes
through. By Tuesday morning, we should be down in the low 40s again.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Sure hoping for no more gravity waves in those
weekend storms. There is a slight risk of severe weather tomorrow from
West Texas north through the Texas Panhandle and continuing north into
East Colorado and West Kansas. It was 93 yesterday afternoon in Pecos,
Texas. That town has cornered the market on the daily hot spot. Cold
temperatures this morning included 16 in Berlin, New Hampshire and
Mammoth Lake, California and 16 below zero at Point Lay, Alaska. In
the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, a freeze this morning atop
Mt. LeConte with a low of 26. Whittier, Alaska has 94 inches of snow.
Around the lower 48, only 12% of the land area had a snow cover this
morning compared to 22% a month ago.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is always a very funny happening when
Little Miss Molly comes home after spending all day at the Puppy
Beauty Shop. She looks only half her size. She looks so tiny that her
head looks like a small apple, but those eyes get to me. She gets
overjoyed as soon as she recognizes our street. Yesterday she jumped
on the king-size bed while I was trying to take a nap and went through
all kinds of maneuvers—turned upside down to rub her back, flipping
over and over, digging vigorously with her front paws and then
becoming airborne and racing into the living area. Today she still
smells good and looks so cute with that tiny pink ribbon in her hair.
I try not to have eye-to-eye contact. Life goes on.

...Brighter and Warmer Weather...

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: Clouds simply didn't want to leave North Alabama
yesterday; those clouds kept temperatures in the cool 50s with only a
very limited amount of sunshine. Today should be warmer and brighter
with sunshine back in full supply and afternoon temperatures rising
into the mid to upper 60s. The warming trend continues through the
rest of the week, with low 70s tomorrow, followed by mid 70s Friday
afternoon. The air will remain dry and there is no chance of rain
through Friday night.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Moisture levels will begin to increase on Saturday,
and we will mention some risk of scattered showers during the
afternoon hours. At this point, it looks like the best chance of a
shower will be over on the western side of the state, and even there
the rain probably won't be too widespread. Showers and storms will be
more likely statewide Saturday night into Sunday; at this point it
looks like the main surface low with this storm system will pass
through South Alabama, which will limit any significant chance of
severe weather. But, it looks like a good rain producer with totals
possibly exceeding one inch.

Monday of next week looks cool and unsettled as a cold upper trough
will be right on top of us; the day should be mostly cloudy and cool
with some chance of scattered light rain and a high only in the 50s.
Drier air returns by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

STORMS OF APRIL: National Weather Service survey teams have identified
8 tornadoes that touched down across our state last Friday, April 10.
The most significant was an F3 tornado that moved through parts of
Marshall, Jackson, and DeKalb Counties of Northeast Alabama. At one
point that tornado was a brief waterspout when it moved across the
Tennessee River. One home was completely lifted off its foundation and
driven nearly 4 feet into the ground in the community of Sylvania. The
other tornadoes were across parts of Central Alabama, in the general
area from Montgomery to Phenix City; all six of those tornadoes were
rated F1. That same event produced large hail in almost two dozen
Alabama counties.

IN THE DARK: As of late yesterday, Alabama Power reported there were
still 57,350 outages across the state, due to Monday's gravity wave
event. More than half were in the Birmingham metro area, which
includes Jefferson and Shelby Counties. East Alabama was reporting
4,684 outages. West Alabama had 21,908. Those in the hardest-hit
areas may be without electricity until this evening. To repair the
damaged lines as quickly as possible, Alabama Power is receiving help
from crews from other states, including Louisiana, Mississippi and
Tennessee. A number of schools across the northern half of the state
were closed yesterday due to power outages.

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Pecos, Texas with
93 degrees; the coldest was Deadhorse, Alaska with 10 below zero.

...Good Riddance To Gravity Wave...

VERY PLEASANT WEATHER AHEAD: We do not care for gravity waves. I
would enjoy going through life without ever seeing another one, but
they are a fact of life in the world of weather. We have always had
them. I remember several of them in the 50s, 60s and 70s while I was
still in the Weather Service. We knew basically why they occurred, but
we certainly did not know much about them and we had never heard the
term gravity wave at that time.

Tim Coleman and some of his associates at UAH in Huntsville will be
doing a post-mortem study on our gravity wave Sunday night and Monday.
It will make an interesting read.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: We see zero chance of another gravity wave the
rest of this week (those are rare, by the way). Instead, we are
looking forward to some sleep catching-up weather the rest of the
week. One of the most difficult forecast problems in the world of
weather in this part of the country is to determine how quickly or how
slow the sky will clear after a cold front passes. That is something
that requires some more research also. There seems to be no set rule.

Our cold front that moved through during the night was over in Georgia
today, but a solid deck of clouds was hanging tough over the north two-
thirds of Alabama and northward. We expect those clouds to break up
tonight and become clear. This will allow the old front porch
thermometer to fall to 41 by daybreak and some of the NE Alabama cold
spots could be as low as 36 or 38. The real nice weather is Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday with mostly sunshine, less humid and highs between
67 and 75.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: Some widely scattered showers and storms showing
up on Saturday and increasing in number Sunday and Sunday night. We do
not really need the rain. As of today, Birmingham now has a surplus of
2.21 inches so far in 2009. We have received over 20 inches of rain—
almost exactly 3 inches more than we had on this same date last year.

ROAMING: Tom Waller is one of our weather fans at Columbus Air Force
Base in Mississippi. He was involved in search and rescue after the
vicious Guin tornado in 1974. He reports that Columbus also had the
gravity wave Sunday night. They received over 2 inches of rain in an
hour with gusts to 60 mph. Mature trees were uprooted all over the
place. They received 10 inches of rain in 2 days. Tallahassee has
received 10 inches of rain so far this month including 3.38 in the
last 24 hours. Harlingen, Texas had 100-degree heat Monday. Coldest
this morning 16 at Berlin, New Hampshire and Redmond, Oregon. 10 below
zero at good old Deadhorse, Alaska. Our daily check on Whittier,
Alaska shows 93 inches of snow still on the ground.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is a strange little
animal in some ways, but as sweet as they come. This was her day to go
to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) for a trim. As soon as we took her to
the garage and she saw the car, she started shaking with fear because
she knew where she was going. Once she gets there she relaxes. On the
way home this afternoon, she will be bobbing that head around looking
for our street. She recognizes it immediately and that little tail
goes to wagging. She will smell so good and look so cute with a little
ribbon around her neck. Life goes on gravity wave or no gravity wave.

...Calmer Days Ahead For Alabama...

NO STORMS FOR A FEW DAYS: After a series of wild days, including
thunderstorms with baseball sized hail, wall clouds, tornadoes, and a
gravity wave responsible for knocking down hundreds, and perhaps
thousands of trees across Alabama, the weather finally settles down
for a few days. I think we all deserve a break.

After a cloudy start this morning, we expect a clearing trend today,
with most communities enjoying sunshine this afternoon. Temperatures
will be about 10 degrees below average values for April 14; with highs
generally in the mid 60s. Tonight, with a clear sky and a calm wind,
temperatures will drop quickly, and we will be close to 40 degrees at
daybreak tomorrow. The colder valleys across North Alabama will visit
the 30s, and there is even some risk of scattered light frost. It
should not be a problem for growers.

REST OF THE WEEK: Expect beautiful spring weather tomorrow through
Friday, with sunny days, clear nights, and a gradual day to day
warming trend. We will be in the mid 70s by Friday afternoon.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We have not seen good consistency in computer model
output for the weekend, so forecast confidence is not especially high.
But, for now it looks like Saturday will be generally dry and mild
with only a small risk of an afternoon shower over the western
counties of the state. Showers and storms will be more likely late
Saturday night into Sunday. The showers could linger into Monday of
next week. Then, out in the long range, there seems to be a trend of
the primary jet stream across North America lifting northward, and if
that is correct it will mean warmer and drier weather for the state
toward the end of the month.

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The most notorious dust storm of the dust bowl
era strikes the Plains. Known as "The Black Blizzard," it was the
first of
many dust storms that would affect the nation's breadbasket. Dust
clouds would be clearly visible as far away as the shipping lanes of
the North Atlantic Ocean. Politicians in Washington could not ignore
the plight of the citizenry of the Plains, as huge, black clouds of
dust hovered over the Nation's capitol. Soils had been pulverized into
a fine dust by the farming techniques of the era and the wind picked
up the dry soil and blew it into huge black clouds. Gentle rains would
return in the fall of 1938, putting an end to the Dust Bowl era.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!
