HURRICANE HEADLINES: Tragic reports continue to come out of
Southwest Florida this afternoon. No one is giving any definite fatality
numbers at this time because everything is very chaotic. One Charlotte
County hospital official reported that she knew of somewhere between 150-200
fatalities that had come to their three hospitals. Florida Governor Jeb
Bush says that disaster teams are having a hard time getting into some
areas. A Charlotte County government official reports that as many as 9,000
homes and buildings have been destroyed. He said, "We have met our
Andrew."

HARDEST HIT AREA: Charlotte County, Florida was at ground zero as
Hurricane Charley struck land yesterday afternoon. The cities of Port
Charlotte and Punta Gorda were hardest hit. They are situated on a body of
water called Charlotte Harbor. There are reportedly thirty one mobile home
parks in Charlotte County. Looking at helicopter video of the damage, many
of the residences are travel trailers with foundations built around them.
Quite a lot of them are smashed into smithereens. Video from Sanibel Island
reveals that virtually every home was damaged. Upper Captiva Island was
split in two by the storm. The eyewall of Charley edged along the outer
islands before it turned inland at Charlotte Harbor.

CHARLEY'S OTHER IMPACTS: One fatality occurred in Orlando as winds
gusting to 105 mph flipped a tractor-trailer onto a car on the interstate,
killing a young girl. A person was electrocuted in Daytona Beach by a
fallen electrical line. Damage is evident is all across the state of
Florida all along the path from Charlotte County to Volusia County on the
East Coast with the greatest damage in Charlotte, Highlands, DeSoto, Hardee
and Lee Counties. The hurricane passed into the Atlantic, remaining
offshore of the Georgia coast and coming inland again between Charleston,
South Carolina and Wilmington, North Carolina. That is a big area, but the
storm had a huge center. Charley was downgraded to a tropical storm at 2
p.m. EDT. A wind gust to 66 mph was observed at Wrightsville Beach, NC
before the equipment failed. Charley will continue over eastern North
Carolina, Virginia and into Maryland tonight.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression Four is about 600 miles southeast of
the Windward Islands. It will pass into the Caribbean tomorrow as Tropical
Storm Earl. It will become a hurricane as it passes south of Puerto Rico on
Monday. By Tuesday it will be near Haiti. The long range forecast is for
it to be south of the western tip of Cuba on Thursday. Tropical Storm
Danielle is way out in the eastern Atlantic and will stay well out to sea.

OUR WEATHER: Dozens of record lows were reported this morning
across the country including here in Birmingham (54) and Pinson (49.) We
will come close to records again tonight. Skies will be mostly sunny
through at least Monday, with partly cloudy conditions into midweek. An
approaching front will set off showers in the Thursday and Friday time
frame. Daytime highs will quickly rebound to normal levels which is near 90
degrees. We still have a three nights of readings in the 50s and 60s still
ahead for us.

...Another Hint of Fall...

GOOD MORNING! By the time we sort everything out this morning, more records will have fallen across much of the United States, including Alabama, as cool high pressure remains in control off much of the nation’s weather. We’ll detail some of the most notable records in the afternoon edition. Did you enjoy the sky last evening at sunset? With no haze, it positively looked like fall!

HELP! FINGERS...LOCKED...CAN’T TYPE....ANYMORE... It has been a fun week filling in for James while he was on “vacation.” You would know that a hurricane would happen during his week off. Of course, next thing you know, there is a convoy of ABC3340 trucks heading south. That’s my kind of vacation. It has been fun writing for you all week, especially with the millions of web updates on Bonnie and Charley. Thanks for putting up with my ramblings. Did you know that you can hear James on radio stations all over the country? I was lucky enough to get to do Jacksonville, FL and Brunswick, GA this week, along with a couple of others.

CHARLEY: Hurricane Charley is skimming along the South Carolina coast, heading for an early afternoon landfall near Myrtle Beach. Charley will continue north northeastward along the entire East Coast, finally pushing into Nova Scotia by Tuesday. Charley will maintain tropical storm force all the way to the Chesapeake.

TROPICS: By the time you read this we will probably have tropical storm Danielle, and maybe Earl! TD#5 (Earl? Danielle) has the best chance to be a problem, heading toward the western Caribbean by midweek.

OH, THE WEATHER... Nearly forgot...I am supposed to tell you the forecast. Lots of sunshine through Tuesday, partly cloudy by midweek, a chance of showers Thursday and Friday. Near record lows again Sunday morning, then readings begin t moderate. Highs will be near 90 after Monday, but lows will be slower to moderate courtesy of low dew points that will be with us until midweek.

GOOD AFTERNOON! Charley is making landfall on the western coast of Florida in the Port Charlotte/Fort Myers area as a Category Four hurricane. Charley has strengthened rapidly and now has top winds of 145 mph. See today’s edition of Weather Talk for more information on Charley. The tropics promise to be rather busy for the next ten days or so as soon-to-be Tropical Storm Danielle steams across the Atlantic. The newly-formed tropical depression number four in the far eastern Atlantic should strengthen to
tropical storm status later today or tonight.

WHAT A MORNING! When I got on a plane in Jacksonville, Florida this morning at 7 a.m., the temperature was 79 and the dew point was a sopping 75 degrees. When my plane touched down in Birmingham, it was a cool and comfortable 60 over 51. I though I had landed in New Mexico instead of Birmingham.

RECORD CITY: The wires have been humming with record low temperatures coming in from all over the country this morning. Records have been tied or broken in at least 15 states from South Dakota to Colorado to Alabama. I had counted at least forty seven records lows for September 13th by 10:30 a.m. and it is certain there will be a bunch more to add to that. Some notable record lows:

55 here in Birmingham
63 at Mobile
51 at Huntsville
52 at Tupelo, MS
64 at Corpus Christi, TX
47 at Springfield, MO
43 at Rapid City, SD

Several stations set all-time record lows for the month of August. Some of those included:

47 at Jackson, TN
52 at Greenville, MS
52 at Greenwood, MS
58 at Vicksburg, MS
59 at Austin, TX

MORE RECORDS AHEAD: The record low for August 14th in Birmingham is 58 degrees. It appears that we will be able to break that record, with a projected overnight low of 56. It will be touch and go on Sunday morning, when the record low and the projected low are 58..

WEEKEND WEATHER: Beautiful weather will continue through the remainder of the weekend with lots of sunshine, low humidities and comfortable temperatures. Daytime highs will be in the low 80s on Saturday and mid 80s
on Sunday.

THE WEEK AHEAD: More nice weather will continue through much of the upcoming week. Daytime high temperatures will return to near normal levels for this time of year by Monday, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 all week long. Moisture levels will be slower to rise, leaving dew points in the lower 60s until Wednesday, which will give us comfortable overnight lows. Next chance of rain: possibly Thursday as a front approaches from the northwest. There will be a better chance on Friday as the front draws closer.

...Great Weekend!...

GOOD MORNING! Alright, folks. It's halftime of our tropical extravaganza
and I hate to say that the second half promises to be much more exciting
than the first half. We have a dangerous Category Three hurricane
threatening the extremely vulnerable Tampa Bay area. Charley will move
inland on the West Coast of Florida somewhere near the Tampa area early
tonight.

A PLEASANT WEEKEND AHEAD: Earlier in the week, we thought we might be
monitoring a dangerous hurricane in the Central Gulf this morning. That
would almost certainly have had a major effect on Alabama weather. As it
turns out, Charley has taken a more easterly track, just off the Florida
West Coast. That's good news for us here, but bad news for Floridians.
Here in North Central Alabama, we are left to face a pleasant weekend of
plentiful sunshine, low humidity levels and comfortable temperature
readings. On Thursday morning, the low at Vichy/Rolla, MO was a chilly 45
degrees. That was one of several record lows for the date, but even more
importantly, an all-time record for August cold. Now, add about 11-12
degrees to that, and you will have the average temperatures over the next
couple of nights across our area. A few of the normally colder locations
may see lower 50s Saturday and Sunday morning.

HOW ABOUT THE WEEK AHEAD? Mostly sunny skies will prevail at least through
Sunday. Temperatures will trend back up to near normal levels for this time
of year by Wednesday. By that time, moisture levels will recover enough
to permit the return of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. But still,
conditions should remain dry through much of the coming week. The next
significant chance of rain will come next weekend in the Friday/Saturday
time frame. It appears that the tropical Atlantic will be extremely busy
for the next couple of weeks. An impressive disturbance is located just off
the coast of Africa. It will be making its way across the Atlantic over the
next ten days.

NOT MUCH PERSPIRATION: It was only 66 degrees at Cullman Airport at noon today! Can you imagine that in the middle of August? For the second weekend in a row, we are headed for some very nice weather, including low humidity, cool nights and fairly comfortable days. For the next four nights, we look for low temperatures in Central Alabama to be between 56 and 58. It might be a little cooler than that in some of the North Alabama valleys. The clouds will move out tonight and we will have mostly sunny weather through Sunday. There could be some scattered clouds around tomorrow as part of the broad circulation with Bonnie, but there is no chance of rain.

LAST NIGHT’S SOAKING: There was a Flash Flood Warning for Jefferson County during the wee morning hours and some places got about 3 inches of rain. Down in Shelby County, Brian Peters of the 33/40 staff, measured 2.59 inches in Helena—most of it in two hours very early this morning. It is the most rain he has had since 2.84 inches way back on April 30. Here are some more overnight totals:

3.30 inches in Wadley
2.58 in Roanoke
2.56 at Horseshoe Bend
4.37 at Mobile
1.52 at Birmingham Airport

WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE TROPICS: We can sort of breathe easy now about Bonnie because she moved onshore at midday in the general vicinity of Apalachicola. Overall, she was not as much of a problem as originally anticipated. She never gained hurricane status. Bonnie had problems lasting more than two weeks, even when she was a tropical depression. She was a nice lady, but generally lazy. This afternoon inland she was moving toward the ENE at 28 mph. Heavy rain will be the lingering problem.

Hurricane Charley is a far more serious situation, but even he will be too far east to affect Alabama weather. The most crucial problems now are Western Cuba, the Florida Keys and the SW coast of Florida. He could go inland near Tampa. We will post more details as he gets closer.

RAMBLING THURSDAY THOUGHTS: We’ve been so busy with tropical systems that we haven’t had space to report goings on in other parts of the country. There’s been some significant severe weather over the last few days from Oklahoma into Eastern Colorado. The temperature dropped to 31 at Old Fort Laramie, Wyoming…yesterday’s hottest was 125 in Death Valley...I enjoyed James Spann’s live updates from Panama City...New York City 1.77 inches of rain yesterday and now they’re going to get a lot of rain from both Bonnie and Charley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Been so busy that I’ve had to ignore little Miss Molly in the last 24 hours and she has really let me know it. She expects a lot of attention and I like that. She has followed me around the house every step I took with her little tail wagging and with one of her balls in her mouth wanting me to play ball with her. I’ll catch up a little later. I feel guilty, but life goes on.

...The Saga of Bonnie and Charley...

GOOD MORNING! If you ever wanted to know if the good folks at the World Meteorological Organization have a sense of humor, it could have been in the list of North Atlantic tropical cyclone names. Wouldn’t it have been perfect if the “C” storm had been named Clyde? Guess they are the stuffed shirt type, huh?

WHAT ABOUT BONNIE? Our plucky little Bonnie nearly disappeared Wednesday evening, only to begin another burst of convection a few hours later. For most of the afternoon and the evening hours, the storm lost its formerly impressive tight central circulation and the Air Force plane had trouble finding tropical storm force winds. We will assume that Bonnie will stay intact as it passes over a warm water eddy in the Gulf during the favorable time of the day for convective development, despite the presence of strong wind shear. Bonnie should reach land later this morning somewhere around Panama City or perhaps a little east of there, probably as about a 50 mph tropical storm.

OK. WHAT ABOUT CHARLEY? Hurricane Charley is moving through the Cayman Island this morning. Charley is beginning to curve around the subtropical ridge of high pressure to its northeast. Charley will turn north and north northeastward, passing over Fort Myers, FL Friday afternoon, then crossing the Florida Peninsula and emerging over the Atlantic before making landfall in South Carolina again on Saturday.

WHAT ABOUT OUR WEATHER? A cold front is passing through North Alabama this morning. The front is interacting with the circulation of Bonnie in an overrunning sort of way, producing a broad swath of rainfall this morning across Central Alabama. The front will kind of wait for Bonnie to clear before pushing through the entire state. Dry and cooler air will flow into Alabama behind the front, much like last weekend. We have a good shot at breaking the record lows for Saturday and Sunday in Birmingham, as we expect 57 and 56 on the respective mornings. The record each day is 58.

EFFECTIVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT FRIDAY MORNING (1100 PM CDT THURSDAY
EVENING) FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES.

FLOOD WATCH
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL
140 AM CDT THU AUG 12 2004

...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH
FOR FLASH FLOODING FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES UNTIL 1100 AM CDT
THIS MORNING...

IN SOUTHWEST ALABAMA...ESCAMBIA...COVINGTON...CONECUH...BUTLER...
CRENSHAW...BALDWIN AND MOBILE COUNTIES.

IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA...OKALOOSA...ESCAMBIA AND SANTA ROSA COUNTIES.

BANDS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE
DEVELOPING OVER THE WATCH AREA AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT.
THIS COUPLED WITH A MODERATE TO STRONG ONSHORE FLOW FROM TROPICAL
STORM BONNIE PASSING JUST SOUTH OF THE AREA WILL RESULT IN THE
TRAINING OF STORMS ACROSS THE WATCH AREA THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS.
WITH GROUNDS ALREADY SATURATED FROM PREVIOUS RAINS THE LAST COUPLE OF
DAYS...AND MANY CREEKS AND STREAMS ARE NEAR BANKFULL. ADDITIONAL
RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 3 INCHES WILL RUNOFF QUICKLY AND
INCREASE THE THREAT OF FLASH FLOODING ACROSS THE WATCH AREA.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS...CREEKS AND
OTHER LOW LYING FLOOD PRONE AREAS...ESPECIALLY ALONG POOR DRAINAGE
ROADWAYS...STREETS AND UNDERPASSES ARE POSSIBLE. PEOPLE IN THE WATCH
AREA SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE
IMMEDIATE ACTION SHOULD HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODING OCCUR OR A FLASH
FLOOD WARNING IS ISSUED.

REMEMBER...MOST FLASH FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES ATTEMPTING TO
CROSS FLOODED AREAS. RAPIDLY RISING WATER CAN EASILY CARRY A VEHICLE
AND ITS OCCUPANTS DOWN STREAM.

THE FLASH FLOOD THREAT WILL DIMINISH BY THIS AFTERNOON AS TROPICAL
STORM BONNIE PUSHES INLAND WELL EAST OF DESTIN SOMETIME BY MID TO
LATE MORNING...AND THE COLD FRONT PUSHES OFFSHORE LATER THIS
AFTERNOON.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND OTHER LOCAL MEDIA FOR CONTINUED
UPDATES ON THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WEATHER SITUATION.

==================================================================

THE TROPICS HAVE OUR ATTENTION: Have you ever felt overwhelmed? With
me today, it's because I am completely inundated with an enormous
amount of weather information. So, let's try to sort it out the best
we can. Our more immediate concern is Tropical Storm Bonnie. She
continues to move northward in the Gulf of Mexico and gradually grow
stronger. At midday, sustained winds were about 50 mph, but stronger
gusts.

Where will Bonnie go? The official tracking guide from the National
Hurricane Center points to a landfall early Thursday morning on the NW
Florida coast, probably between Destin and Panama City. We all know
that these storms have a mind of their own, so stay tuned for the
freshest information. Bonnie may not have time to reach hurricane
force before landfall, but she will still be strong enough to cause
plenty of problems. On the east side of the center, large waves can be
expected. As much as 4-6 inches of rain is expected in the area and
that is very bad news. NW Florida is soaked from recent rains.
Valparaiso was inundated with 6.46 inches yesterday, Mobile 3.12
inches and Destin 2.40.

After making landfall, Bonnie will track NE passing near the SE tip of
Alabama, across Georgia, into South Carolina late Thursday night. By
that time, she should be downgraded to a depression.

Charley, in the Caribbean, will become a hurricane. He will then
gradually turn northward crossing western Cuba to near or west of Key
West before daybreak Friday. After that he moves northward across
central Florida, skirting the Georgia coast and then into the eastern
part of the Carolinas.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ALABAMA? Charley should be too far east to give
us any problems. Bonnie may give some heavy rain to the SE part of the
state, especially Thursday. Meanwhile, cooler air will be circulating
into the system and eventually bring us some nicer weather. Along and
ahead of the front, showers and thunderstorms will be increasing
overnight and some places will get good rainfall amounts. Here in
central Alabama the showers and storms will diminish by late in the
day Thursday. Looking beyond of all of this, look for some very nice
weather for the second weekend in a row. We believe that Friday,
Saturday and Sunday will have mostly sunshine with lower humidity and
cool mornings. The lows should be in the upper 50s and highs only in
the low to mid 80s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My hips were hurting by the time Molly
and I finished our half-mile walk very early this morning. I really
believe that I could pull an 18-wheeler if my leg muscles were as
strong as Molly's ounce for ounce. For some reason, she put the pedal
to the metal (maybe I should say, paws to the concrete) this morning
and I had to lean back on the leash to try to check her speed. She got
so excited seeing some neighbors, chasing several birds, another
rabbit chase and another encounter with the community cat. It's a
wonder the little girl doesn't develop high blood pressure. Life goes
on.

...All Eyes On the Tropics...

GOOD MORNING! We have a lot to talk about this morning, so we will get started right away. You can check the latest information from our tropical systems on the ABC3340 Website’s 7 Day Planner and in today’s Weather Talk.

BONNIE: I worried yesterday that Bonnie might not survive its trip across the Gulf. Bonnie is still out there, but not very impressive. Tropical Storm Bonnie is about 250 miles south of New Orleans this morning. The storm has made its expected northeastward turn and should begin increasing its forward speed. Bonnie should be about 125 miles south of Pensacola just after midnight tonight. Bonnie is expected to make landfall somewhere between Destin and Apalachicola during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday.

Just how strong will it be? If the storm becomes a little better organized today in a light shear, warm water temperature environment, it could make landfall as a minimal hurricane. But the good news is, the storm is extremely small. It will then speed northeastward across Georgia and the Carolina, pushing off the Virginia coast Friday.

CHARLEY: Our second tropical storm is about 175 miles southeast of Jamaica this morning. Charley is a much more impressive specimen than Bonnie, and will probably become a hurricane soon. By Thursday night, the storm will be over western Cuba, and will be moving northward. Our best prediction is that it will move over eastern Gulf and make landfall just north of Tampa Friday night.

WHAT ABOUT OUR WEATHER? A cold front will edge down into Alabama today. Scattered showers and storms will occur ahead of the front today and tonight. The heavier rains of Bonnie will be well to the southeast. As Bonnie passes to the southeast on Thursday the front will move through, setting the stage for a very nice weekend.
