...Moisture Returns Quickly...

A gorgeous fall day is occurring across Central Alabama on this early
October Saturday. A refreshing start, blue skies and mild
temperatures are making for some fine weather. But things are going
to change fairly quickly…

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: You don't have to go very far to
find some deep moisture this afternoon. While dewpoints over Central
Alabama are in the 40s and 50s, just 250 miles to the south, they are
near 70F. This airmass will come back northward over the next 48
hours behind a developing warm front. Clouds will thicken on Sunday
with rain chances returning by later afternoon. Rain and embedded
storms will be likely Sunday night into Monday morning. Rainfall
amounts will be in the one to two inch range. We will have to watch
out for flooding issues.

MORE WET WEATHER AHEAD: Starting Monday afternoon, we get a short
break until Tuesday, when a cold front will make a run at the state
with more showers and storms. Another little break for Wednesday,
although it will remain warm and rather humid. More rain chances
return on Thursday with a good chance of rain and storms into the
weekend. Some heavy rains could occur.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Breezy but dry in Lexington as Alabama and
Kentucky play an early SEC game. Highs will top out in the middle
60s. It will feel like football weather in Knoxville tonight as
Auburn travels to take on Tennessee. Fair skies at General Neyland
Stadium with temperatures starting out in the 60s, falling to near 50
by game's end.

TROPICS: Nothing to talk about in the tropical Atlantic. Watch for
an uptick in energy in the western Caribbean around October 12th with
the potential for some tropical development in this area about that
time.

ASTRONOMY HOMEWORK: Late tonight, look for the Little Dipper (Ursa
Minor) in the northwestern sky. Trace out to the end of the handle,
and you will find the North Star, Polaris. Look up and to the right
and you will find the familiar "W" shape of the constellation
Cassiopeia. Partly cloudy skies should cooperate in your endeavor.
Bonus opportunity: looks for the orange glow of Mars in the morning.
Mars rises just after midnight and is high in the southeast sky at
first light. It will rise earlier and grow brighter as the month
wears on.

WEATHERBRAINS: The week, the team will host Eve Gruntfest from the
Social Sciences Woven into Meteorology project. We will discuss the
warning process and the response of people. The show will be
available by late Monday night at www.WeatherBrains.com or on iTunes.
Follow our tweets for WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THE DATE IN 1970: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration was formed and the U.S. Weather Bureau became the
National Weather Service on this date. Follow my weather history

...Shine On Harvest Moon...

Tonight will mark the arrival of the Harvest Moon. It harkens back to
Native American days, when the individual full moons had nicknames.
There was the Full Wolf Moon in January, named for the wolves that
came calling during heavy snowpacks. There was the Full Flower Moon
in May, when spring wildflowers were at their peak. And there was the
Harvest Moon, which came during the time of harvest, giving precious
extra hours to bring in the crops. The Harvest Moon is traditionally
is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. That would be the
one that begins just after midnight tonight.

NICE START TO WEEKEND: We are getting off to a nice start on this
October Saturday morning. With most of the area in the 40s, skies are
sunny. Sunshine will be the rule of the day with a light northwest
wind. Look for highs in the upper 70s.

MOISTURE RETURNS QUICKLY: Clouds will start to spread back into the
area overnight and skies will become mostly cloudy by Sunday morning.
Rain chances will begin to increase by Sunday afternoon and rain will
become likely Sunday night as a warm front moves northward through the
area. Moisture will continue to pump into the area on Monday and
Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. We get a little break
from the rain Wednesday and Thursday before another big wet weather
system moves in for the weekend. All the rain will move out in time
for the following Monday with a change to cooler and drier.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama travels to Lexington to take on the
Kentucky Wildcats in a late morning affair. It should be dry and
mostly sunny. Kickoff temperatures will be in the upper 50s, peaking
at around 62 during the game. Wind could play a factor with southwest
winds averaging 10-15 mph but occasionally gusting to 30 mph. Auburn
travels to Knoxville to play the Vols this evening. Dry weather
expected with temperatures starting out around 65, falling back to
near 50 by the final whistle.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be eerily quiet as we
head into the backside of the season. A tropical wave about 400 miles
east of the Lesser Antilles is the only feature of note and it is
disorganized with no real prospects for development.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all about
weather. Tornado and lightning researcher Tim Samaras was our guest
this week. It is a great listen. This week, we address the response
to severe weather watches and warnings with sociology expert Eve
Gruntfest. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes.
It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: A costly tornado hit Windsor and Windsor Locks,
Connecticut. The tornado was rated as an F4. It is the second
strongest tornado to ever hit New England. The Bradley Air Museum was
hard hit, where sixteen vintage aircraft were destroyed. Damage
totaled $200 million. Tornadoes are rare in Connecticut, where the
average number per year is less than two. Killer tornadoes are even
rarer: it was the first killer tornado of record in Connecticut.
Three people died and 500 were injured in the short lived but intense
twister. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Showers Return Sunday...

A MIXED WEATHER MENU: All day yesterday afternoon and until late last
night, we were tracking some very active thunderstorms and heavy rain
across the South/Central USA. We knew they would eventually reach
Alabama, but we were concerned how strong they would be when they got
here. There were several Severe Thunderstorm Watches and even a
Tornado Watch with those storms, but not in Alabama.

By early this morning, the leading edge of the showers had reached NW
Alabama, but most of the lightning was gone and there was no threat of
severe weather. As the morning went on, the rain just simply fizzled.
The sky was beginning to clear in NW Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We have made-to-order football weather for high
school games tonight in Alabama. Most areas should be mostly clear and
dry with temperatures in the 60s at kick off and dropping into the 50s
in the second half. On Saturday, Alabama is in Lexington for an 11:21
a.m. kick off with the Kentucky Wildcats. No rain is expected and it
should be around 56 degrees at kick off peaking at 62 during the game.
It will be breezy at times with winds up to 20 mph. Auburn is also on
the road in Knoxville playing Tennessee at 6:45 Saturday evening. Dry
weather is expected with about 65 degrees at kick off and 48 to 50 at
the final whistle.

THIS WEEKEND IN ALABAMA: The weather models are clashing in some ways
with the weather expected late in the weekend and through the middle
of next week. Look for all sunshine on Saturday. Clouds will increase
on Sunday with a chance of rain by afternoon and Sunday night.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms have returned to our forecast for
Monday and Tuesday. Probably the better chance will be on Monday. The
weak cool front pushing across Alabama will stall down south and start
heading back north Monday as a warm front. That is one of several
reasons why we will see some more showers and thunderstorms both
Monday and Tuesday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Sure is getting late in the season to expect much
from the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic, the Caribbean
and our friend, the Gulf of Mexico. Long-term records have shown that
around September 10 is the maximum activity time for tropical storms
or hurricanes.

ELSEWHERE: 100 in Dryden, Texas was the hottest in the USA Thursday.
Lows this morning included 11 at Big Piney, Wyoming. That is a neat
small town nestled in a valley in West/Central Wyoming. In Alaska, the
coldest was 3 above zero at Anaktuvuk Pass.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: You would think my morning walks with
Little Miss Molly would be quiet and peaceful. Most times they are,
but I never know what to expect. This morning, as soon as we began
walking, a bird hidden in the hedgerow had hysterics. With my
imagination I assumed the bird thought he was in for a home invasion.
The bird set off loud barking from a small dog on one side of the
track. The small dog triggered barking from a big dog on the other
side of the hedgerow. Molly ignored all of that and went deep into the
hedgerow herself looking for the cat that almost ran over her earlier.
Life goes on. J. B. Elliott

...Showers Today; A Dry Weekend...

NICE WEEKEND AHEAD: But, before we get there, we will have endure a
few showers and thunderstorms. The band of showers and storms should
enter the northwest corner of Alabama early this morning, then passing
steadily to the southeast during the morning. The chance of any
significant severe weather is minimal with only limited instability,
and rainfall amounts of around one-half inch are likely. The showers
should move along at a rather good clip, and the clear will begin to
clear this afternoon from the northwest. Tonight will be clear and
cooler with a low in the upper 40s by daybreak tomorrow.

Look for a good supply of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with highs in
the mid to upper 70s. Humidity levels will stay rather low, and Sunday
morning will be cool again with temperatures in the upper 40s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Should be a great night for high school football
tonight; the sky will be generally clear with temperatures in the mid
60s at kickoff, dropping into the 50s during the second half of the
games. Tomorrow, Alabama will be in Kentucky for an 11:21 kick off.
About 58 degrees at kick off and warming slowly into the lower 60s.
There will be clouds around, but no significant chance of rain. Auburn
is in Knoxville to play Tennessee for a 6:45 kick off. The sky will be
mostly clear with 65 degrees at kick off and dropping to around 48-50
at the final whistle.

AT THE BEACH: Let's don't forget fall is a wonderful time to visit the
Alabama Gulf Coast… if you happen to be headed down there this
weekend, the sky will be mostly cloudy tomorrow, but with no
significant chance of rain. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance
of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs over the weekend will be
in the 80 to 83 degree range. The
38th annual National Shrimp Festival will be in Gulf Shores next
weekend, October 8-11.

NEXT WEEK: Summer weather returns to Alabama next week with increasing
heat and humidity levels. Looks like there will be some risk of
scattered showers and storms on a daily basis, mainly during the
afternoon and evening hours. The heaviest rain should be a little north
of Alabama, around the I-40 corridor. Look for highs in the mid 80s by
mid-week.

TROPICS: The very quiet 2009 hurricane season rolls along; satellite
images reflect a very calm pattern across the Atlantic basin, and
tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora moves across the south coast of
Haiti and then meanders across eastern Cuba for the next five days,
lashing the island with winds of 100 mph or more for 100 hours or
more. Rainfall amounts were astronomical, with as much as 90 inches
being reported near Velasco.

...The Season Is Changing...

OCTOBER—A NEW BEGINNING: We had a good invasion of cool air right at
the end of September and now as we begin October we turn wet again
starting very late tonight and well into Friday. We may see some
scattered showers and thunderstorms in Central Alabama toward daybreak
tomorrow. Our beloved weather models have backed off considerably on
the amount of rain. The NAM now projects only 0.36 and the GFS even
less at 0.34. We should not lower it that much, but it does not look
like a big rain event and it is going to be quick to come and quick to
go.

We believe that the occasional showers and maybe some thunderstorms
will be ending by late afternoon Friday. That will be replaced by
mostly sunny weather on Saturday with pleasant temperatures. We think
Sunday should be partly sunny and dry. Again, there is a chance for
some more showers and thunderstorms early next week even as early as
Monday.
Involved in this weather picture is another cool front. By daybreak,
the front should be near the NW corner of Alabama reaching Central
Alabama by late Friday. The front should be far enough south that we
should have nice weather Saturday and Sunday. By Monday, however,
moist air will start returning north. We may see an increase in
showers and thunderstorms by next Thursday as another front pushes
down and stalls in Central Alabama. That is really getting the wagon
before the mule, so we will get back to the present and discuss some…

FOOTBALL WEATHER: It looks like the timing of this rain event will be
friendly to high school football for sure tonight and most likely for
the Friday night games. We believe the showers will be out of the way
before Friday night kick offs. Temperatures at kick-off time tonight
should be in the upper 60s. For tomorrow night, in the mid 60s at kick
off lowering to the 50s. Southern Miss is in Birmingham to play UAB at
7:00 this evening. Kick-off temperature should be 73 falling into the
60s with dry weather. On Saturday, Alabama will be in Kentucky for an
11:21 kick off. About 58 degrees at kick off and warming slowly into
the lower 60s. Auburn is in Knoxville to play Tennessee for a 6:45
kick off. It should be around 65 at kick off and dropping to around
48-50 at the final whistle.

ROAMING: Big snow event in the Rocky Mountains as if on signal that
October is here. As much as 23 inches of new snow in part of Western
Wyoming. 3 inches on the ground at Yellowstone National Park. USA low
this morning was 15 at Ely, Nevada. If you throw in Alaska, it was 5
below zero at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. The Atlantic Basin is still as
quiet as can be, as far as tropical activity is concerned.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and her future wanta-
be husband Little Dino the Yorkie, teamed up yesterday afternoon on
the walking track for a big cat hunt. As luck would have it, both were
out walking when the big cat came strolling down the walk followed
soon by a very large cat that I have never seen before. You would have
thought those two little dogs were on an African safari. They did not
want to come back home. Instead, they waited and watched. One of the
cats had dived into the hedgerow. I saw it peep out to see if the way
was clear. He saw Molly and went deeper into the hedgerow. Little Dino
and Molly could not be better friends and they are a riot to watch
together. Life goes on.

...Welcome October!...

ONE MORE DRY DAY: Looks like we will squeeze out one more very nice
day before wet weather returns to our state tomorrow. Look for a good
supply of sunshine today with a high in the upper 70s; some West
Alabama communities could touch 80 this afternoon.

TO THE WEST: While we enjoy a very pleasant day, a vigorous storm
system will bring a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms in the
general area from Dallas to St. Louis; some of the highest severe
weather probabilities are over Arkansas, where a few isolated
tornadoes are possible this afternoon. This thunderstorm area will
move into Mississippi late tonight, and ultimately into Alabama.

RAIN TOMORROW: We still believe the main window for thunderstorms in
Alabama tomorrow is from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Of course, it won't
rain all 12 hours, but one to two hours of rain seems likely. A few
strong storms should fire up, but for now a major severe weather
threat doesn't seem likely due to limited instability. Rain amounts of
around one-half to one inch are likely statewide. The rain will taper
off from northwest to southeast late in the day, and there is a
reasonable chance the rain will be gone by the time high school
football games begin tomorrow night.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? The weather looks excellent as drier air takes
over; the sky will be mostly sunny Saturday and Sunday with highs in
the 75 to 78 degree range. We should be somewhere between 45 and 50
degrees early Saturday and Sunday morning.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Both Alabama and Auburn are on the road this
weekend, so here is an early look. For the Auburn/Tennessee game at
Neyland Stadium Saturday evening (6:45 p.m. kickoff), the sky should
be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature of 65 degrees, dropping into
the 50s by the end of the game. Alabama plays Kentucky at Lexington
(11:30 a.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with a kickoff
temperature near 58 degrees, then rising in the low 60s through the
game. We should also note UAB has a home game tonight at Legion Field
in Birmingham; they will host Southern Miss at 7:00 p.m. The weather
will be dry and pleasant, although clouds will be increasing. The
kickoff temperature will be near 73 degrees, falling into the upper
60s by the final whistle.

OCTOBER: This is usually our driest month of the year in Alabama;
Birmingham averages only 3.23" of rain during the month. The average
high will fall from 80 degrees today to 70 degrees at Halloween. The
hottest temperature recorded during the month was 94 degrees, recorded
on October 1, 1919, October 5, 1927, and October 6, 1954. Coldest on
record for the month is 27 degrees, measured on October 28, 1957, and
October 29, 1952. The fall colors usually come alive on the Alabama
hillsides by mid-month; in most years the color actually peaks during
the first week of November. We recommend you enjoy the month since our
fall tornado season is just around the corner, in November and December.

...More Changes Ahead...

A DEEP BLUE SKY: This is about as blue as the sky gets in this part
of the world. Not only is the sky a deep blue, but the visibility is
fantastic. If we had mountains like the West, I believe you could see
some of the peaks 70 or 80 miles away today. There is no haze, no
smoke, nothing to keep you from seeing forever.

Enjoy the early autumn weather, because we will have a significant
change by Friday. After that we will change back to some more nice
autumn weather over the weekend.

It will not be quite as cool across the state as it was the last two
nights. Indeed, the wind may
pick up just a bit from the SW between midnight and daybreak and cut
off some of the cooling. Even so, we are calling for an average low of
50 across Central Alabama. Some of the NE Alabama valleys will easily
drop into the 40s. Afternoon temperatures Thursday will approach 80,
especially in Central and South Alabama.

BACK TO WET WEATHER: A significant storm system developing in the
midsection of the USA will affect our weather by Friday. Another cool
front will approach the state later Friday. We believe there is a good
chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday. A few of those could exist
into Friday evening. We will be able to tell better in the forecast
tomorrow morning if high school games will be impacted Friday night.
Sunshine should return Saturday and Sunday.

THE MORNING COOLNESS: We did not quite drop as low as 39 in NE
Alabama overnight, but we came close. This is a few examples of
morning lows. A much longer list on the 33/40 BLOG:

40 Grantley
43 Valley Head, Scrougeout, Muscadine
44 Cottondale, Munford, Hamilton
45 Ft. Payne, Pinson, Lincoln, Hanceville
46 Decatur, Cullman, Anniston, Russellville
49 Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa
Lows ranged upward to 56 at Gulf Shores and 69 Dauphin Island.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The Tropics are quiet as a flea in the Atlantic
Basin. Over on the Pacific side, a large disturbed area several
hundred miles SW of the south tip of Baja, California shows promise.
In the sever weather department, a Slight Risk is posted for today and
tonight over in Nebraska and North Kansas. For Thursday, the Slight
Risk covers most of Missouri and Arkansas as well as East Oklahoma, NE
Texas and extreme North Louisiana. There are some early indications
that we could have a few strong storms on Friday. We can zero in on
that much better tomorrow. Coldest in the entire USA this morning was
an even zero at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. In the lower 48, it was 19 at
Lakeview, Oregon and Polebridge, Montana. Heavy snow today in
Yellowstone National Park, 3-6 inches. A Winter Storm Warning is
posted for the Wasatch Mountains and West Uinta Mountains above 8,000
feet in North Utah.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is possessed with the
Community Cat. After chasing the cat two days in a row, she goes on
full alert now the minute she steps out the backdoor. She can zero in
on the cat track two days old. She gave up and started up the walking
track. She stopped to do her morning bathroom duty. The cat, which
weighs twice as much as Molly, was hiding in the hedgerow only a few
feet away. The cat came roaring out at 40 mph almost running over
Molly. Molly turned for the chase while she was still doing her
bathroom duties. I also had to speed up to 40 mph to keep up and as
Andy Griffith would say, avoid stepping in something. There is never a
dull moment. I have to be on full alert. Molly often changes direction
15 times in one walk. Life goes on—still a lot of fun.

...Maximum Sunshine Again Today...

NOBODY GRIPING ABOUT THIS WEATHER: Well, I guess somebody somewhere
might have a complaint, but seems like everybody is loving this fall
weather. Expect another sunny day today with a sunny sky, low
humidity, and a high in the mid 70s following a chilly start in the
40s. Very similar weather tomorrow, but things will change before the
week is over.

TO THE WEST: A vigorous upper trough will bring a chance of strong to
severe thunderstorms to the Great Plains today, but an even more
significant severe weather threat is likely tomorrow in the broad area
from Jackson and Memphis to Kansas City and Omaha. Parameters suggest
an enhanced severe risk tomorrow for places like Tulsa and Fort Smith.
Some of the storms in that region could produce large hail, damaging
wind, and even a few isolated tornadoes.

The disturbance will impact Alabama on Friday with a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms. A few strong storms are certainly possible,
but for now the instability seems to be lacking for a major severe
weather threat. We are projecting rain totals of 1/2 inch, with
isolated amounts to one inch. And, the band of showers and storms
should be moving at a good clip, so we don't expect any flooding
issues. The main window for showers and storms will come in the 6:00
a.m. to 6:00 p.m. time frame; there is a decent chance the rain will
be over in time for high school football games Friday night, but
certainly no guarantee at this point.

DRY WEEKEND: The sky will clear late Friday night, and the weekend
looks very nice with ample sunshine Saturday and Sunday, along with
highs in the 70s and lows in the 48 to 52 degree range.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Both Alabama and Auburn are on the road this
weekend, so here is an early look. For the Auburn/Tennessee game at
Neyland Stadium Saturday evening (6:45 p.m. kickoff), the sky should
be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature of 68 degrees, dropping to
near 60 by the end of the game. Alabama plays Kentucky at Lexington
(11:30 a.m. kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with just an outside risk
of a shower during the game. Kickoff temperature near 63 degrees, then
hovering in the low to mid 60s through the game. We should also note
UAB has a home game tomorrow night at Legion Field in Birmingham; they
will host Southern Miss at 7:00 p.m. The weather will be dry and
pleasant, although clouds will be increasing. The kickoff temperature
will be near 75 degrees, falling into the upper 60s by the final
whistle.

FALL CHILL: Yesterday's official low at the Birmingham Airport was 49
degrees; the last time it was that cool was on May 19 when the low was
also 49 degrees. The coolest place we could find statewide was Fort
Payne with 41 degrees; Hamilton dropped to 42, and the low at Valley
Head was 43.

...Cool Dry Air Everywhere...

FIRST REAL TOUCH OF AUTUMN: I am holding in my coffee-stained fingers
a surface weather map of all of North and Central America. It seems
like cool dry air is everywhere. That is an exaggeration, of course,
but the weather map is dominated by a long ridge of high pressure that
extends from Northern Canada to Texas and Louisiana. This has pushed a
cool front deep into the South and the front was moving through
Central Florida this morning and quite a way down into the Gulf of
Mexico.

This system will give Alabama some very nice weather, at least for the
next two days. But good things do not last forever in the world of
weather, so we will have a significant change by the end of the week.
Look for clouds to move in Thursday night. We could even have some
showers before daybreak Friday. There is a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms Friday. At this time, we believe those will get out of
here at some point Friday evening. That part is not sealed in stone.
Some of our weather models even hint at some lingering Saturday
morning showers. For this forecast, however, we will leave them out.

The showers and thunderstorms on Friday will bring a good amount of
rain to many sections of the state. We believe that most places will
get over ½ inch of rain.

NOW BACK TO THE PLEASANT PART: I actually saw someone with a light
coat on this morning when I walked my little dog. It takes a lot
colder weather than this to make me reach for a jacket. The visibility
today is awesome. There is no smoke or haze in the air. There are
patches of cirrus clouds moving across the sky. Those are way up there
about 25,000 feet where it is well below zero. We posted a long list
of morning lows on the ABC 33/40 BLOG. However, here is a cross
section of lows from north to south across the state:

41 at Ft. Payne (the lowest reported)
43 Valley Head, Grantley
46 Hanceville, Pinson
47 Anniston
49 Birmingham, Jasper, Springville
50 Tuscaloosa
51 Montgomery
67 Gulf Shores

SOME INTERESTING RAIN NUMBERS: This report from Vic Bell, the 33/40
Skywatcher for Scrougeout in Etowah County. 9.91 inches of rain so far
in September, an even 60 inches for 2009 to date, but an amazing 78.14
inches for the last 12 months.

WILLARD, UTAH: Our friend, Matt Marshall, lives there. He is a real
weather geek. He reports mid and upper 80s the last few days, but a
high of only 49 for tomorrow. Big storm coming in. High elevations may
see 20 inches of snow. Elsewhere, a super powerful earthquake has
struck in the South Pacific off of American Samoa rated as an
unbelievable 8.3 on the Richter Scale. Tsunami Warnings were issued.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has developed a semi-
bad habit. She insists on having the warmest seat in the living area
to curl up for a nap. If one of us leaves even for a minute or two to
get coffee, she will steal our seat. Last night she changed sleeping
places four times in less than 5 minutes. She may be just trying to
tease me because I have to pick her up and move her every time. She
gently moans an objection until I put her down again. Then I give her
a head rub, do a check-to-cheek hug and all is well. Life goes on.

...Fine Fall Weather...

COOLEST AIR SO FAR THIS SEASON: Fall weather fans will love our
forecast through mid-week as the coolest air so far this autumn
settles into Alabama today. Look for a cobalt blue sky, a fresh north
breeze, and very low humidity levels today with a high in the low to
mid 70s. Then, tonight, temperatures will drop steadily, and by
daybreak tomorrow most communities will be in the 45 to 49 degree
range, with potential for low 40s across the cooler valleys of North
Alabama. I would not be shocked to near of a low of 39 at some place
like Valley Head in DeKalb County, or Broomtown in Cherokee County.
The refreshing pattern stays in place through Thursday with the
pattern of comfortable days and chilly nights.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Clouds will increase across our state on Friday ahead
of an approaching cold front, and we will bring in a chance of showers
and storms by the afternoon hours. This same system has the potential
to produce severe thunderstorms on Thursday to the west of Alabama, in
the general area from Jackson, MS to Omaha, NE, so we will be on the
lookout for strong storms Friday afternoon. For now we expect the best
chance of rain from roughly 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight Friday, with
potential for average rain amounts of 1/2 inch, with potential for 1
inch in isolated spots.

WEEKEND PEEK: The rain should move out of Alabama by daybreak
Saturday, and at this point we figure Saturday and Sunday will be dry
with a partly sunny both days and a high around 80 degrees.
Considering the fact that we have had measurable rain on four of the
past five Saturdays, a dry weekend sounds pretty appealing to most
Alabamians.

OUR RAIN SITUATION: Birmingham's rain total for the year is now
52.35"; not far from the average amount we see in an entire year
(53.99"). September, 2009, is going in the record books as the third
wettest September since 1900 – bronze! Our total for the month is
10.69". But we also got a Gold since this September is the wettest
without a classic tropical system to produce the rain (although most
of the rain was caused by a broad tropical low that never received a
name). Our wettest September on record came in 1906 with 13.19". The
second wettest September was in 2004 with 10.96", thanks to Hurricane
Ivan.

Another interesting note is that September, 2009, also goes in the
records for consecutive days with rain. We've had 8 back-to-back days
with rain which ties many other years for 6th place.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Big Change To Cooler...

A CHANCE TO DRY OUT: Well, the big change is here--the first real
display of autumn. However, more important than that is at least three
more days of sunny, dry weather with lower humidity. It is what the
doctor ordered for drying out swollen streams and flood prone areas.
Most of the main rivers from recent downpours have drained down to
where flooding is no longer significant.

However, the main advantage of this change in weather is to give
people time to recover from flood damage and we all know that there
was an extreme amount of that. Even Atlanta is going to share this
cooler and much drier weather and no region in the country needs that
at this time in the largest city in Georgia.

COOL MORNINGS; GREAT AFTERNOONS: This first invasion of autumn air so
far this year was quickly spreading into Alabama this afternoon. There
was a pronounced drop in humidity and the best way to determine that
is to check the dew point. The dew point was above 70 in South Alabama
this afternoon, but it was as low as 39 over much of Arkansas and into
NW Mississippi. It had dropped into the 40s over NW Alabama. Brisk NW
winds added to the comfort.

You will really feel the benefit of the cooler air as you get up the
next three mornings. Across North/Central Alabama, including the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston corridor, we believe the coolest
morning will be Wednesday. We are calling for an average low of 47. We
hope we get a low temperature report from Grantley and other NE
Alabama valley locations over the next few days. I feel certain that
we are going to hear of a low temperature of 42-44 in those areas. We
cannot absolutely guarantee that we will not hear of a 39.

NEXT RAIN: Some more quick changes late in the week. Clouds will
increase Friday with scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly
Friday afternoon and Friday night. This will be due to another cool
front approaching from the west and NW. We believe that most of the
showers and storms will be gone by Saturday.

MANILLA: We will use that huge city to introduce global weather. They
are having a catastrophe from days on end of tropical rain. Press
reports today say that at least 140 people have drowned and at least
32 missing. Old man weather can really go through some changes.
Central and South Texas were in a super drought. They had a quick
series of showers and storms, so now the September rain total at
Austin is 6.86 inches more than 4 inches above average for the month.
Another indication of the change in season was the low of 9 above zero
this morning at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. The lower 48 low was 23 in
Stanley, Idaho. Barrow, in North Alaska, now has a snow cover. The
Tropics are quiet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: There is something about Little Miss
Molly and the witching hour of midnight that coincide. She always
wants to go outside (translation: bathroom) right at midnight. Last
night, as I was walking through the living area, she had assembled six
of her favorite balls right across where I had to walk and she had
grouped three of them between her front paws. We had the longest and
most vicious ballgame ever. On our early morning walk today, I noticed
something black under the big Bradford pear tree in our backyard. I
thought it was a piece of trash. Little Miss Molly knew otherwise. She
became very upset. Suddenly the big black community cat came roaring
out from under the tree and at 40 mph went under a nearby fence and
out of sight. There is never a dull moment with Molly. Life goes on.

...Fall-like Weather Ahead...

Sunday afternoon was perfect for yard work across Central Alabama.
After seemingly days of rain, skies cleared and humidity levels
dropped. It was seasonably warm with highs around 80 degrees. Even
more perfect weather will be setting up for the remainder of the week
as a reinforcing cold front brings even drier air in to Alabama later
today.

WORTH THE WAIT: If you liked Sunday, you will love today, and I
think you will love tomorrow even more. Looking northwest, that
southeastward moving front has already reached Northwest Alabama and
it will sweep through the state during the day. It will be
accompanied by a few clouds, and we can't rule out an isolated shower,
although chances are very small. Highs today will top out around 80
degrees again. Skies will clear tonight and dewpoints will drop like
a rock, falling into the 40s overnight. The average low by morning
will be 49F, quite nice even by September standards. Readings on
Tuesday will top out in the 70s, ditto for Wednesday. We could even
be a degree or two cooler Wednesday morning. Both days will feature a
nice northwesterly breeze.

BEYOND MIDWEEK: By Thursday, our winds will shift around to the
southeast, allowing moisture to return, although no rain is expected.
By Friday, another strong trough will cut off into a big upper low to
the northwest of Alabama and an area of showers and storms could move
into Alabama Friday night. But it should be gone by Saturday, with
seasonably nice conditions returning.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Rain will briefly changeover to snow tonight and
Tuesday over southeastern Oregon and northeastern California. By
Tuesday, snow will become likely over the higher elevations of
southwestern Montana, eastern Idaho and northeastern Wyoming. They
could see some four inch amounts in Yellowstone National Park and the
Sawtooth Range.

TROPICS: The remnants of tropical depression 8 continue moving west
northwest over the open Atlantic. The GFS predicts that we will see
the development of a tropical storm by next weekend in the eastern
Atlantic. It also predicts that the system will curve to the
northwest and north through a weakness in the subtropical high.

WIN A BOOK: Follow our tweets about the WeatherBrains podcast. We

highlights. You will also be eligible for giveaways from time to
time. This week, we will give away a copy of last week's guest

selected Monday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Tropical Storm Isidore's remnants brought
heavy rains to southwestern Kentucky, ending a severe drought there
that had lasted through the summer. The period June through August
was the second driest on record at Paducah. Four to six inches of
rain caused flooding in Dayton, Ohio, where manholes covers were blown
off due to intense pressure buildup from the floodwaters. Follow my
weather history tweets @wxhistorian.

...Nice September Sunday...

Sundays like today stick out in my mind from my childhood. The sound
of the heavy Birmingham News in the driveway early on a Sunday morning
meant a complete rundown on the previous day's football games. It
would be cool when you stepped outside to pick up the paper. Summer
was gone and fall was becoming more apparent with cooler temperatures
and shorter days. It feels that way today.

VERY NICE WEEK AHEAD: The cold front that moved through the area is
over South Alabama this afternoon. Humid air still covers the
southern half of the state, but some drier air filtering into the
north allowed for cooler readings last night. Dewpoints will continue
to lower slowly through the day, dropping humidity levels gradually.
Lows tonight will bottom out in the lower and middle 60s across the
area. A second cold front will arrive early on Monday. It will be
accompanied by a few clouds and perhaps a light shower or two tonight
and early Monday. But skies will clear again Monday afternoon with a
brisk northwesterly breeze. Highs tomorrow will top out around 80.
Dewpoints will start to crash Monday night, falling into the 40s and
allowing lows by Tuesday morning to drop into the upper 40s in many
locations. Get used to this fine, cool fall weather, because it will
be with us for much of the week ahead. Lows Wednesday and Thursday
morning will likely be in the upper 40s. Highs will be in the 70s
Tuesday and Wednesday. We will see gradually warming temperatures as
we head to the end of the week, but it will still be quite pleasant.

TROPICS: The remnants of tropical depression number 8 are about 600
miles west northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. There is a small
chance that there could be some regeneration, but even if it does, it
will head northwest and out to sea. We will be watching areas east of
the islands and off the South Atlantic coast over the next couple of
weeks, but the global models aren't bullish on development.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all
about weather. If you like weather, you should listen. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Tornado researcher Tim Samaras this week.
Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and have a chance to win Robert
Henson's book The Rough Guide to Climate change.

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: Isaac Cline, the Chief of the Galveston TX
Weather Bureau office during the 1900 hurricane was promoted to Chief
of the Forecast Center for the Gulf States in New Orleans. He
established hurricane observation posts in Cuba and on Swan Island
that warned of a powerful hurricane taking shape in the Caribbean.
The storm threaded the needle of the Yucatan Channel and moved into
the Gulf of Mexico. By the morning of the 27th, tides were rising
along the northern Gulf Coast. Cline had been studying tropical
cyclones and the phenomenon of storm surge since the Galveston
disaster. By the morning of the 28th, Cline would correctly predict
that the storm would move inland on the Louisiana coast and spread a
dangerous storm surge to the east of the center along the Mississippi,
Alabama and Northwest Florida coastlines. His warnings saved lives.

All this moisture, and some good radiational cooling conditions have
led to some patchy dense fog across Central Alabama on this Sunday
morning. Be careful if you are out driving early this morning before
the sun burns away the fog.
RAINY SATURDAY: Rain and storms were fairly widespread across the area
on Saturday, but the good news was that most everything was moving
along fairly quickly with the approaching trough and cold front. The
heaviest rainfall was in a streak from Pickens through northern
Tuscaloosa and into southern Walker County. Doppler estimates
indicated that there might have been 4-5 inches of rain south of
Parrish and Oakman. Flooding was reported in Vernon in Lamar County.

BYE, BYE WET WEATHER: Finally, after two solid weeks of heavy rainfall
that resulted in some incredible rainfall amounts, including 7.51
inches at the Birmingham Airport, the rain is over for awhile. It
looks like Birmingham will finish with 10.69 inches of rain for
September. According to Brian's research, September 2009 will rank as
the third wettest since 1900. Impressive, especially with no named
tropical storm or hurricane involved. Parts of West Alabama received
an amazing 20+ inches in the past thirty days.

FALL WEATHER: Fall started last Tuesday, but you haven't been able to
tell it with all the warmth and humidity. Things will finally get back
on track now as drier and slightly cooler air moves into the state.
You will see those dew points begin to drop today, on the back of
westerly winds that will be a little on the brisk side by afternoon.
Skies will be partly cloudy during the afternoon, but become clear
before nightfall. Overnight readings will drop to near 60F on average.
A secondary surge of cooler and drier air will arrive late Sunday
night or Monday morning, accompanied a few clouds, and perhaps a
shower, although rain looks unlikely. Monday will see plenty of
sunshine with a fairly brisk northerly wind. Look for middle 50s
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We had thought that the
weekend would be wet, but high pressure may hold off an approaching
front for awhile. TROPICS: The National hurricane Center issued the
last advisory on Tropical Depression Number 8. It was sheared apart by
hostile winds. Nothing really of note in the global models for the
next two weeks as our quiet hurricane season continues.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: Tim Samaras this week. Eve Gruntfest of
SSWIM on October 5th. Les Lemon on October 12th. Weather rains on
October 19th. We will have an AM Weather reunion on October 26th. The
Dr. Chuck Doswell on November 2nd. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter
@weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: A day after claiming the lives of eight
crewmembers and two members of the press aboard a Navy reconnaissance
plane, intense Hurricane Janet passed over Swan Island with winds
estimated to 200 mph. The hurricane made landfall early the next
morning near Chetumal, Mexico and crossed into the Bay of Campeche,
where it made landfall again near Veracruz, Mexico.
