...Nice September Sunday...

Sundays like today stick out in my mind from my childhood. The sound
of the heavy Birmingham News in the driveway early on a Sunday morning
meant a complete rundown on the previous day's football games. It
would be cool when you stepped outside to pick up the paper. Summer
was gone and fall was becoming more apparent with cooler temperatures
and shorter days. It feels that way today.

VERY NICE WEEK AHEAD: The cold front that moved through the area is
over South Alabama this afternoon. Humid air still covers the
southern half of the state, but some drier air filtering into the
north allowed for cooler readings last night. Dewpoints will continue
to lower slowly through the day, dropping humidity levels gradually.
Lows tonight will bottom out in the lower and middle 60s across the
area. A second cold front will arrive early on Monday. It will be
accompanied by a few clouds and perhaps a light shower or two tonight
and early Monday. But skies will clear again Monday afternoon with a
brisk northwesterly breeze. Highs tomorrow will top out around 80.
Dewpoints will start to crash Monday night, falling into the 40s and
allowing lows by Tuesday morning to drop into the upper 40s in many
locations. Get used to this fine, cool fall weather, because it will
be with us for much of the week ahead. Lows Wednesday and Thursday
morning will likely be in the upper 40s. Highs will be in the 70s
Tuesday and Wednesday. We will see gradually warming temperatures as
we head to the end of the week, but it will still be quite pleasant.

TROPICS: The remnants of tropical depression number 8 are about 600
miles west northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. There is a small
chance that there could be some regeneration, but even if it does, it
will head northwest and out to sea. We will be watching areas east of
the islands and off the South Atlantic coast over the next couple of
weeks, but the global models aren't bullish on development.

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: Isaac Cline, the Chief of the Galveston TX
Weather Bureau office during the 1900 hurricane was promoted to Chief
of the Forecast Center for the Gulf States in New Orleans. He
established hurricane observation posts in Cuba and on Swan Island
that warned of a powerful hurricane taking shape in the Caribbean.
The storm threaded the needle of the Yucatan Channel and moved into
the Gulf of Mexico. By the morning of the 27th, tides were rising
along the northern Gulf Coast. Cline had been studying tropical
cyclones and the phenomenon of storm surge since the Galveston
disaster. By the morning of the 28th, Cline would correctly predict
that the storm would move inland on the Louisiana coast and spread a
dangerous storm surge to the east of the center along the Mississippi,
Alabama and Northwest Florida coastlines. His warnings saved lives.
