...Showers Today; A Dry Weekend...

NICE WEEKEND AHEAD: But, before we get there, we will have endure a
few showers and thunderstorms. The band of showers and storms should
enter the northwest corner of Alabama early this morning, then passing
steadily to the southeast during the morning. The chance of any
significant severe weather is minimal with only limited instability,
and rainfall amounts of around one-half inch are likely. The showers
should move along at a rather good clip, and the clear will begin to
clear this afternoon from the northwest. Tonight will be clear and
cooler with a low in the upper 40s by daybreak tomorrow.

Look for a good supply of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with highs in
the mid to upper 70s. Humidity levels will stay rather low, and Sunday
morning will be cool again with temperatures in the upper 40s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Should be a great night for high school football
tonight; the sky will be generally clear with temperatures in the mid
60s at kickoff, dropping into the 50s during the second half of the
games. Tomorrow, Alabama will be in Kentucky for an 11:21 kick off.
About 58 degrees at kick off and warming slowly into the lower 60s.
There will be clouds around, but no significant chance of rain. Auburn
is in Knoxville to play Tennessee for a 6:45 kick off. The sky will be
mostly clear with 65 degrees at kick off and dropping to around 48-50
at the final whistle.

AT THE BEACH: Let's don't forget fall is a wonderful time to visit the
Alabama Gulf Coast… if you happen to be headed down there this
weekend, the sky will be mostly cloudy tomorrow, but with no
significant chance of rain. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance
of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs over the weekend will be
in the 80 to 83 degree range. The
38th annual National Shrimp Festival will be in Gulf Shores next
weekend, October 8-11.

NEXT WEEK: Summer weather returns to Alabama next week with increasing
heat and humidity levels. Looks like there will be some risk of
scattered showers and storms on a daily basis, mainly during the
afternoon and evening hours. The heaviest rain should be a little north
of Alabama, around the I-40 corridor. Look for highs in the mid 80s by
mid-week.

TROPICS: The very quiet 2009 hurricane season rolls along; satellite
images reflect a very calm pattern across the Atlantic basin, and
tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora moves across the south coast of
Haiti and then meanders across eastern Cuba for the next five days,
lashing the island with winds of 100 mph or more for 100 hours or
more. Rainfall amounts were astronomical, with as much as 90 inches
being reported near Velasco.
