...Hello Spring...

GOOD MORNING! Spring makes the scene at 6:33 a.m. CST this morning. Of course, meteorologically speaking, we have been in the Spring season since March 1.

STORMS IN OUR FUTURE: And Spring is one of our primary severe weather seasons here in Alabama. In keeping with that, severe weather will be a possibility Monday night and Tuesday as a strong low pressure system forms over the Plains states and heads northeast. First, a warm front will be drawn northward over the southern states by the increasing southerly flow ahead of the low. This will produce a round of showers and storms during the day on Monday. Behind the front, the airmass will become quite unstable. Then the timing of the event becomes critical. A squall line will form ahead of a cold front and push toward Alabama. If it arrives during the early morning hours on Tuesday, as advertised by the GFS model, the main threat would be damaging winds and isolated tornadoes associated with the line of storms. If it arrives in the afternoon, as advertised by the NAM model, supercells could form in advance of the line, and significant tornadoes would be more likely. Now is a good time to review your severe weather plans.

TODAY: A little dense fog out there this morning, so be careful. After it burns off, today will be a nice day, with partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Skies will become cloudy overnight.

WEEK AHEAD: Wednesday should see a return of some sunshine, but an active southern branch of the jetstream will give us a chance of showers on Thursday. A new storm system will deliver a good chance of showers and storms on Friday, with rain chances lasting into Saturday. Temps will be near normal for most of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: No watches and no warnings were in effect when a tornado struck the area around Gainesville GA during the early morning hours. Two schools and dozens of homes were in the 13 mile path of the fast moving twister that killed 12 people. Had the twister struck an hour later, school would have been in session and the death toll undoubtedly would have been much higher.

BLOW DRYING ALABAMA: Even though we had some good rains recently,
you can bet that rapid drying has taken place across the state today. Dew
points were in the 20s, meaning very low humidity, and westerly winds have
been gusting frequently as high as 35-40 mph. With temperatures warming even
more for Saturday and windy conditions continuing, the NWS suggests that
outdoor burning be discouraged. It will dry enough by tomorrow for an
outdoor fire to easily get away from you, even though there are no official
fire alerts.

We do expect the wind to weaken tonight, but not completely go calm.
With low dew points in the area, we will see some low temperatures by
morning in the upper 30s. We expect rapid warming Saturday and we have upped
our high temperature to 70 degrees. This is based mainly on winds backing
around to a more west and SW direction and with marked warming expected at
about 5,000 feet above the ground.

Clouds will increase Sunday as a cold front passes through from
north to south. There will be a slight chance of showers and those should
increase Sunday night. The showers should end Monday morning.

A COLD MARCH SO FAR: At Birmingham Airport, the first 10 days of
March averaged an impressive 8.4 degrees colder than normal. We did have a
high of 70 on the 5th, but most days have been chilly.

MORE SNOW FOR THE SMOKIES: Disturbances moving rapidly from the NW
to the SE will bring some more snow to the Great Smoky Mountains late
tonight and Saturday morning. As much as 4-6 inches of new snow is expected,
especially in the high country.

FRIDAY NOTES: In the lower 48, temperature extremes in the last 24
hours included 93 in Palm Springs, California and 18 below zero at Presque
Isle in extreme Northern Maine...on this date in 1923, a powerful F5 tornado
in West Tennessee hit Deanburg and Pinson. It left 20 dead. At least
one-fourth of Pinson was obliterated. Pinson is located on US-45 about 10
miles SE of Jackson...in 1988 on this date, a huge blizzard in the Northern
Plains brought 69 inches of snow to Lead in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Wind gusts to 63 mph produced 30-foot drifts.

THE BLIZZARD OF '93: Tomorrow is the 12th anniversary of a historic
winter storm in Alabama. I'm sure Bill Murray will write extensively about
this over the weekend. In my 40 plus years of weather work, I have never
seen thunder snow more than 4 or 5 times. It happened in a big way on the
night of March 12, 1993. The whole state was covered by snow-very rare.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A missed photo-op because I did not
have my trusty 26-year old Nikon with me. Just as little Miss Molly and I
were passing the Old Crow Motel at sunrise, there was a nice patch of
altocumulus clouds serving as a backdrop. A big overweight robin was the
lone bird sitting on one of the limbs (rooms) and it would have made a
beautiful photograph or even a Thomas Kinkade painting. I have just got to
take walks and leave Molly home. She keeps such close tabs on me that I
consider her my shadow. I really believe that if I were to go out the back
door and get on the walking track without her, she would file a restraining
order against me. I can't even go get the mail or the morning paper without
her pressing her little nose against the front door window tracking me. I
must admit that I love that. Life goes on.

...Strong Storms Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Lots of talk around the weather office about the possibility of severe weather Monday night. People talking about bringing Pop-tarts and doughnuts, because it could be a long night. (Doughnuts are an important nutritional staple during long weather events.)

If the low pressure system ends up north of Alabama on Monday, we will be in the warm sector and strong to severe thunderstorms will be very possible across Alabama, especially Monday night into early Tuesday, followed by a strong squall line. It is our spring storm season in Alabama and you will want to review your preparedness plans and pay close attention to later forecasts and discussions right here.

WEEKEND WEATHER A cold front will move across the state tonight, but its origins are Pacific in nature and there won’t be a big temperature difference across the front. There could be a few spotty showers today, but rainfall amounts will be light. Sunday promises to be nice with partly cloudy skies and mild temps.

NEXT WEEK: After the severe weather departs early on Tuesday, skies should clear by Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are looking nice with another storm due in Saturday.

SPECIAL FEATURE: All weekend long, we will be highlighting the 20 deadliest twisters ever to strike the state. Five of them occurred on March 21, 1932, Alabama’s deadliest day of tornadoes. See today’s edition of Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A two day snowstorm dumped up to seven feet of snow on parts of Colorado and Wyoming, closing interstates, shutting down businesses and schools, and stranding 4000 travelers at Denver International Airport, and even ripping the airport’s soaring cloth roof. You would expect that such a disruptive storm would be a bad thing, but not for residents of drought weary Colorado. The wet, heavy snow provided as much as forty percent of the annual precipitation for many Front Range cities and towns. The 5.2 inches of melted equivalent at Fort Collins, Colorado was the most at that location in 114 years. Water experts gleefully reported that the snow would help replenish reservoirs and eliminate the need for watering landscapes for quite some time.

...Some Light Rain Later Today...

Temperatures will remain well below normal values for mid-March for
the rest of the week, and we will have a little light rain at times along
the way. Maybe, a few snow flakes.

The first disturbance will bring clouds into Alabama today along
with the chance of some light rain this afternoon. A few snow flakes are
possible as the rain ends tonight, but temperatures will be above freezing
and the moisture is very limited. All precipitation should end by midnight,
followed by a clearing sky. Temperatures will be near freezing by daybreak
tomorrow.
Weather system number two moves in here on Friday, with clouds and the
chance of some scattered light rain. Like the first system, there will not
be much moisture and rain amounts will be light and spotty.

THE WEEKEND: Temperatures will begin to moderate over the weekend,
with low 60s on Saturday and upper 60s on Sunday. At this point the weekend
looks dry, but showers could move in here early next week as moist air
begins to return. The longer range models are hinting at a setup for strong
or severe thunderstorms around here toward the middle of next week.

ROAMING: Yet another blizzard for New England yesterday and last
night. At 10:00 p.m. EST last night, Boston reported heavy snow with a
temperature of 16 degrees. Winds were from the northwest averaging 37 mph,
with gusts to 48 mph, making for a wind chill index of -6. The barometric
pressure was down to 28.94".

The warmest place in the nation yesterday was Palm Springs, CA with
90. The southwest U.S. will enjoy the warmest weather so far this year over
the next few days, with Phoenix rising into the upper 80s tomorrow and
Friday.

WEATHER CONTINUES TO CHANGE: Looks like no type weather will corner
the market in our area for at least the next week. It will be different
almost every day. Please check our day-by-day forecast for all of the
details, but here it is in a nutshell:

Occasional light rain tonight ending real late. Temperatures may get
cold enough before all of the moisture moves out to cause a light rain/light
snow mix over extreme North Alabama. Some sunshine by tomorrow afternoon, a
slight chance of light rain again on Friday, a breezy dry and warmer day for
Saturday, but a chance of light rain again on Sunday as another cold front
moves through.

A weak low pressure area was moving east through East Arkansas and
North Mississippi this afternoon. It had spread a thick layer of clouds
across our area and light rain was spreading eastward also. Some of the rain
was not reaching the ground, but it will eventually.

ROAMING AIMLESSLY: A hot 90 degrees in Palm Springs, California
yesterday...18 below zero at Land O Lakes, Wisconsin this morning...the most
miserable weather, however, was in New England where blizzard conditions
occurred yesterday and last night...winds overnight gusted as high as 70
mph., lots of trees and power lines down over Eastern Massachusetts...as
much as 8 inches of snow accumulated, of course piling up in big drifts in
Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire...the average depth around
Boston around 4 inches...a weather buoy SE of Cape Cod reported 18-foot
waves...atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire the temperature dropped to 18
below while west winds were gusting to 106 mph giving a wind chill of 64
below zero...coldest in Alaska this morning 20 below at Anaktuvuk
Pass...here in Alabama, a few snowflakes were reported yesterday morning at
Steele in northern St. Clair County...one of the colder temperatures in
Alabama this morning was 27 at Ft. Payne...a whopping 18 inches of snow on
the ground this morning atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smokies with a low of
2 above...12 inches of snow on Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina and 7 inches on
Newfound Gap.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I always get dressed immediately when
I first get up...but this time, I didn't put on my shoes. I goofed. Little
Miss Molly got up and found them. I'm going to have to buy her a pair of
human shoes for Christmas. She pulled out both shoelaces, even though they
fit tightly. She also dug into one of my shoes and ripped the entire inner
sole. She has a shoe addiction like I used to have to brown sugar/cinnamon
Pop Tarts and doughnuts...I can only have those once a year now. I had a few
doughnuts at the Severe Storms Symposium at Mississippi State last
weekend...Molly and I sure enjoyed our walk this morning. I am convinced
that two birds were carrying on a conversation with each other. Molly and I
sure do enjoy the simple things in life. Hope you do too, because one of
these days, you may look back and realize that those were the BIG things.
Life goes on even with my shoes under repeated attack by my pal, Miss Molly.
We bond more every day if that is possible.

...A Sharp Change To Colder...

After a big round of rain and strong storms yesterday and last
night, sunshine returns to Alabama today, but the weather will be windy and
sharply colder. Northwest winds will gust to 25 mph at times today, and will
keep temperatures in the chilly 40s all day. Tonight, with a clear sky and
diminishing wind, a light freeze is likely with most places dropping
somewhere between 28 and 32 degrees by daybreak tomorrow.

MORE CHANGES: Another fast moving weather system will bring clouds
back in here tomorrow, and rain will spread into the state by mid to late
afternoon. As a pocket of cold air aloft moves into the state late tomorrow
night, there is a chance the rain could briefly change to light snow before
ending. Surface temperatures should remain above freezing, so at this time
we don't expect any travel problems. The best chance of seeing any
snowflakes will be along and north of I-20, and between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00
a.m.

Temperatures will stay below normal on Thursday and Friday, with
sub-freezing temperatures possible during the early morning hours.

WEEKEND PEEK: A moderating trend begins this weekend, with
temperatures back in the 60s on Saturday. Some places might touch 70 degrees
by Sunday afternoon. At this point the weekend looks rain-free. Another
weather system could bring active thunderstorms back to Alabama by early
next week.

MONDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals from around Alabama yesterday included
2.12" at Moundville, 2.00" at Helena, 1.77" at Childersburg, 1.72" at
Sylacauga, 1.48" at Riverchase, 1.44" at Hueytown, 1.44" at Tuscaloosa,
1.26" at Jacksonville, 1.20" at Anniston, 1.16" at Clanton, 1.11" at Legion
Field, and 1.02" at Talladega.

...Cooler Weather Today...

GOOD MORNING! We were reminded that it is Spring in Alabama on
Sunday. An approaching cold front acted as the spark on an air mass made
fairly volatile strong surface heating and relatively cold air aloft. The
resulting instability created some strong thunderstorms that started firing
like a string of firecrackers over Mississippi at mid afternoon. With very
steep lapse rates (temperatures cooling quickly with height) and about 40
knots of deep layer wind shear, the storms grew rapidly. They were fairly
prolific hail producers, with several reports of large hail. Golfball size
hail was reported at Fosters in Tuscaloosa County. There were reports of
funnel clouds from Cullman and Morgan Counties.

Fortunately, no major reports of damage were received. The front was
taking its time moving across the area overnight. Skies should begin to
clear during the day. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the middle to
upper 50s with upper 30s on tap for tonight.

Tuesday should start off with a little sunshine. But skies will
turn cloudy again during the day as another storm system approaches Alabama.
This low will pass very close to us during the day on Wednesday. Showers and
storms will break out during the afternoon Tuesday and overspread the area
Tuesday night. Severe weather is not expected at this time. We will deal
with a little wraparound moisture during the day on Wednesday. The forecast
for Thursday is uncertain, so for now we will call it partly cloudy.

1993 BLIZZARD POSTSCRIPT: With a deep snow cover and clear, calm
conditions in the wake of the "Storm of the Century," the mercury plunged to
2F at the Birmingham Airport. This easily established a new record low for
the month of March. The previous coldest reading during the month was 11F.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: The term "blizzard" is coined by a newspaper
in Iowa as a major snowstorm strikes Iowa and Minnesota. The "new" word
appeared in the Easterville (Iowa) Vindicator.
