...Cooler Weather Today...

GOOD MORNING! We were reminded that it is Spring in Alabama on
Sunday. An approaching cold front acted as the spark on an air mass made
fairly volatile strong surface heating and relatively cold air aloft. The
resulting instability created some strong thunderstorms that started firing
like a string of firecrackers over Mississippi at mid afternoon. With very
steep lapse rates (temperatures cooling quickly with height) and about 40
knots of deep layer wind shear, the storms grew rapidly. They were fairly
prolific hail producers, with several reports of large hail. Golfball size
hail was reported at Fosters in Tuscaloosa County. There were reports of
funnel clouds from Cullman and Morgan Counties.

Fortunately, no major reports of damage were received. The front was
taking its time moving across the area overnight. Skies should begin to
clear during the day. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the middle to
upper 50s with upper 30s on tap for tonight.

Tuesday should start off with a little sunshine. But skies will
turn cloudy again during the day as another storm system approaches Alabama.
This low will pass very close to us during the day on Wednesday. Showers and
storms will break out during the afternoon Tuesday and overspread the area
Tuesday night. Severe weather is not expected at this time. We will deal
with a little wraparound moisture during the day on Wednesday. The forecast
for Thursday is uncertain, so for now we will call it partly cloudy.

1993 BLIZZARD POSTSCRIPT: With a deep snow cover and clear, calm
conditions in the wake of the "Storm of the Century," the mercury plunged to
2F at the Birmingham Airport. This easily established a new record low for
the month of March. The previous coldest reading during the month was 11F.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: The term "blizzard" is coined by a newspaper
in Iowa as a major snowstorm strikes Iowa and Minnesota. The "new" word
appeared in the Easterville (Iowa) Vindicator.
