GOOD AFTERNOON: On this beautiful late fall day, we turn our thoughts
toward the looming threat for flooding and severe weather during the next 72
hours. I know that's kind of hard to imagine on a day like today, but it
does appear that Alabama will experience another heavy rain and severe
weather event starting as early as tomorrow and lasting into early Tuesday.
Let's get started...

ROUND ONE: On satellite pictures this morning, we see a very active
southern branch of the jet stream stretching from the Pacific Ocean across
Texas and the Gulf Coastal states. Off the southern California coast, we
see the spinning gyre of an upper level low. This low is expected to open
up into a trough and shoot east northeastward later today. This disturbance
will affect us tomorrow. For today, a minor trough has served to press high
clouds to our south over southern sections of the state. This mean blue
skies will continue through this evening. By later tonight, the disturbance
will spin up a surface low pressure system over the Plains states. This
will push a warm front out of the Gulf of Mexico. We will see clouds
thicken overnight and winds pick up out of the southeast. By morning, skies
should be completely cloudy Rain will invade southwestern sections of the
state during the morning and quickly overspread the area. Aided by strong
mid-level winds, copious amounts of moisture will overspread the dome of
cool air over Alabama, producing widespread and rather heavy rainfall.
Thunderstorms do no appear likely, so I have removed that from tomorrow's
forecast. By Monday morning, as much as 2.50 inches of rain may fall over
parts of North and Central Alabama.

ROUND TWO: The energy from the initial system will pass to the northeast
Sunday night. Rain should begin to diminish during the overnight hours as
the disturbance passes. A second, stronger trough will be swinging through
the Southwest by that time. It will pass out on to the Plains Monday
morning and rotate northeastward. This stronger trough will spark a second
round of showers and thunderstorms. Plenty of warm, moist air will be in
place across Alabama by Monday morning. If we get a little sunshine on
Monday, the atmosphere will rapidly become unstable. In addition, upper
level wind fields are expected to be quite strong, so any storms that do
develop during the day on Monday could become severe with the possibility of
not only damaging winds, but also tornadoes. As the trough sweeps a cold
front our way, a powerful squall line will form Monday night and pass
through the state. This line will also have the potential to produce severe
weather. In addition, more heavy rainfall amounts may be measured on
Monday, with another one to three inches of rain possible. This raises the
possibility of flooding.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday should feature blustery, cloudy and cooler
conditions with a little light rain. Wednesday should be a relatively nice
day, with clearing skies and mild temperatures. By Thursday morning,
another low pressure center will be over South Texas. It will sweep
northeast to a position northwest of Alabama by Friday morning. This means
increasing clouds and a good chance of rain and more storms on Thursday and
Friday. A front should sweep through early on Friday, but clouds may hang
tough into Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: Heavy snow fell on parts of the South and southern
Appalachians on the 4th through the 6th. Montgomery recorded their greatest
snow of record when 11 inches fell. An amazing 25 inches fell in Rome GA
and 33 inches fell in Asheville NC.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a fairly nice day across the region with a good
deal of sunshine through occasional patches of high cloudiness.
Temperatures have warmed well into the 50s across the area, with lower and
middle varieties of those numbers over the North and middle and upper types
over Central sections.

FORECAST ISSUES: In the short term, the only forecast issue will be cloud
cover. Back to the west of Alabama, satellite photos show a great deal of
high level cloudiness. Over Texas, some really thick high cloudiness is
spreading eastward. It has its origins way out over the Pacific Ocean. I
think that our skies will become partly cloudy across the entire area during
the remainder of the afternoon and through the overnight hours. The models
are calling for mostly sunny skies on Saturday, but I think there is a
chance that there will be more periods when the sky might be mostly covered
with these high clouds. There should be a good deal of sunshine, also,
however.

I had mentioned a little frost again in the morning, but I think that is
unlikely, as temperatures will hold up a few degrees warmer than last night.
Readings will only drop into the upper 30s overnight.

Clouds will certainly begin to thicken in earnest Saturday night as a
significant storm system takes shape to the west of the state. The upper
low that is now over California will open up as a trough and move into the
Central Plains Sunday. This will result in the development of a low
pressure center over the Plains states by then. Meanwhile, another strong
trough will swing into the Four Corners region of the Southwest United
States. This trough will take on a negative tilt and this could spell
trouble, especially on Monday for our weather.

First, a warm front will move northward on Sunday, spreading a good amount
of rain and embedded thunderstorms over the state. Sunday afternoon into
Sunday night looks to be a really wet time, with showers beginning during
the morning hours. Copious amounts of Gulf moisture will be pumped into
Alabama overnight Sunday and during the day on Monday. Conditions will
become rather unstable Monday across the area with lots of moisture and
warmer air. This will breed more rain and storms. Meanwhile, a cold front
will push our way during the day on Monday, setting off a line of showers
and storms. Ahead of this line, we could see strong to severe storms during
the day and more severe weather as the front swings through.

After the front, Tuesday will be a rather blustery day with a little light
rain possible and a good deal of wraparound cloudiness. Wednesday should
see improving conditions with some sun returning. But by Thursday and into
the weekend, mostly cloudy conditions will prevail, with a chance of
showers.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: 9.22 inches of rain fell at the NWS in Birmingham on
West Oxmoor Road in just 24 hours on the night before the Alabama/Auburn
game. Severe flash flooding resulted and some evacuations had to be done.
If the observation had been at the airport, it would have been a new 24 hour
record for Birmingham. There was a tornado warning and torrential downpour
during the Iron Bowl game at Legion Field.

...Rain Returns By Sunday...

We expect to squeeze in two more dry days before wet weather returns to Alabama late in the weekend. With ample sunshine today, temperatures will rise into the upper 50s, about normal for early December in Alabama. Expect similar weather tomorrow, although clouds will begin to thicken late in the day.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: Rain should become widespread across Alabama on Sunday as moist air from the Gulf of Mexico rides up and over a shallow layer of cooler air at the surface. Then, a warm front moves north of the state Sunday night, and will bring unstable air in here which could set the stage for strong thunderstorms late Sunday night into Monday morning.

At this time we expect one to two inches of rain across much of north and central Alabama from 6:00 a.m. Sunday through the midday hours on Monday. The best chance of stronger storms will come from about midnight Sunday night through noon on Monday. We will be watching for the possibilities of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms as the event gets closer, but it does not look as potent as the pre-Thanksgiving storm system back on November 23-24.

THE LONG RANGE: Still looks like the coldest air of the season could be moving into the deep south sometime in the December 16-19 time frame. Way too early to be specific.

BAMA WATERLOGGED: In Pinson, cooperative observer James Price has kept very detailed daily weather records since 1951. He reports a total of 14.13” in November of this year, making it the wettest November on record there. At the Birmingham Airport during September, October, and November, the rain total was 24.71”, the second wettest meteorological fall on record.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I
woke up this morning and saw that the temperature had reached freezing at
the Birmingham Airport. I really was excited by the prospect of us breaking
the latest first freeze record. That's one of those weather records that
you look back on with fondness a few years later. Not like a tornado
outback or a drought or a major winter storm. It's like, "Oh yeah, that's
the year my grass stayed green until December." So close...

OVERNIGHT LOWS: Temperatures fell to freezing or below across all of North
and most of Central Alabama this morning. Some readings from across the
state included:

Birmingham Airport 31
NWS Shelby Co Airport 31
Anniston 29
Tuscaloosa 30
Pinson 26
Decatur 27
Fort Payne 27

ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT? Indications are that readings will be at or just
below freezing across all of the area again tomorrow. Readings on Saturday
morning will be a couple of degrees warmer, likely in the mid 30s. Down
near the ground, where temperatures are a little cooler than where the
official ones are taken, we will probably see a little frost.

SKY TEXTURE: I hope you enjoyed the beautiful palette of clouds in the sky
this morning. The models had been predicting partly cloudy skies this
morning, but I had been sort of ignoring it and hoping it would go away.
Sure enough, some clouds greeted me when I awakened. The clouds are
associated with some mid level moisture moving across on southwesterly winds
aloft. Still, lots of sunshine was evident and temps were in the 50s.

REST OF THE WEEK: Nice weather should continue through the end of the week.
Things will begin to change rapidly as we head into the weekend, however.
The latest model runs have been speeding this next system up a bit. Our
winds will become southerly on Saturday and clouds will thicken during the
day. Showers will probably begin during the overnight Saturday night.
Sunday looks to be a wet day with lots of rain and some embedded
thunderstorms as a warm front lifts over the state. The current thinking is
that by Monday morning, the low will be near Memphis with a trailing cold
front along the Mississippi River.

This would deliver a round of storms to the area during the on day on
Monday. The overnight and early morning runs of the GFS have sped up this
system a bit, with the heavy weather coming in during the early morning
hours on Monday.

There is quite a bit of disagreement about mid week weather later in next
week. A second low pressure system may bring more rain to the area around
Thursday, although the overnight GFS continues to take this system further
to the south. There still are signs that a significant cold wave will come
our way at mid-month.

...Cool and Dry Weather...

Rather benign weather will continue across Alabama through Saturday,
with mostly sunny cool days and clear cold nights. Temperatures will be well
down in the 30s again early tomorrow and Saturday morning.

Most of our attention is focused on the next storm system that
should bring rain back to the state beginning on Sunday. Rather generous
rain totals are possible late in the weekend as moist air from the Gulf
rides up over cooler and stable air near the surface. Then, Monday of next
week, a warm front will move northward through the state, putting us in the
warm sector of the storm which features unstable air. This could mean the
threat of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms on Monday. The ground remains
soaked, so once again flooding will be a concern in addition to the
possibility of a few severe storms if we can get into the warm sector.

MID-MONTH COLD SNAP? Some of the longer range computer models are
hinting at the coldest air so far this season slipping in here at some point
in the 10 to 15 day time frame. Way too early to be specific, but there has
been some good model consistency in this, and surface pressures continue to
rise over much of Canada as the cold air builds.

SOGGY PITTSBURGH: Even though we just started December, this is
already the wettest year on record in Pittsburgh, where the total is now up
to 54.82". Normal yearly precipitation there is only 37.85".

AN L.A. CHILL: Yesterday's low temperature in Burbank, CA was 33
degrees, a few record for December 1. Coldest spot in the "lower 48"
yesterday was Gunnison, CO with -22. Eagle, CO dropped to -15.

FLORENCE...KILLEN...LEXINGTON AND UNDERWOOD-PETERSVILLE

BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS HARDER TO RECOGNIZE THE
DANGERS OF FLOODS AND FLASH FLOODS. IF FLASH FLOODING IS
OBSERVED...ACT QUICKLY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND TO ESCAPE RISING
WATERS!

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS
SAFELY. VEHICLES CAUGHT IN RISING WATER SHOULD BE ABANDONED QUICKLY.
MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

A RAINY NIGHT: Overall, it hasn't rained as much in Alabama as we
had expected so far today, although about 1 inch has fallen at a couple of
places in the extreme NW. The rain is not over. It will continue much of
tonight as a cold front approaches from the west. The rain could be heavy at
times, although we do not see any widespread unusually heavy amounts. Still
a chance that some communities could wind up with totals between 1 and 2
inches.

Since the ground is already wet from recent rains, a flash flood
watch continues for the northern part of the state, generally from
Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston northward to the Tennessee border. The cold
front to our west will reach Central Alabama after midnight. Temperatures
will fall to the low 40s after daybreak and all of the rain should be gone
by mid-morning Wednesday. Clearing will then occur paving the way for
temperatures to fall to near freezing by Thursday morning. This could be
another chance for Birmingham to reach 32 degrees for the first time this
season, which will be very late for that to happen. The good news is that we
expect dry weather for the rest of Wednesday all the way into the weekend.

HURRICANE SEASON ENDS TONIGHT: The official end of hurricane season
is at midnight tonight. Ironically, the National Hurricane Center is
interested in a low pressure area way out in the Atlantic 800 miles east of
Bermuda. It is still showing signs of tropical development and could be a
tropical or subtropical storm soon. If that happens, it will be named Otto,
the 15th of the season.

FORTY BELOW ZERO IN COLORADO: The temperature plunged to 40 below
early today at Antero Reservoir at an elevation of 8900 feet in Colorado.
That was the coldest in the entire nation today including Alaska. It was 26
below at Grant, Colorado. Even Denver had 1 below. Much of Central Colorado
has a good snow cover. There is now 55 inches of snow on the ground at the
Wolf Creek Ski area...contrasting sharply to all of that was a summer-like
92 yesterday at McAllen in South Texas.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NWS: The National Weather Service in both
Birmingham and Huntsville have been awarded the prestigious U. S. Department
of Commerce Bronze Medal for their work during a historic 100-year flood
event on May 6, 2003. They provided critical warning information during
cloudbursts that produced unbelievable rainfall. There were also a few
tornadoes. This is the day that 9.82 inches of rain fell in about 4 hours in
Trussville and put much of downtown under water.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: That little 8.5 pound dynamo that we
call little Miss Molly was so hyped up yesterday and last night that she
could have easily matched 5 Energizer bunnies. We took a nice walk about 9
pm with a beautiful moon forcing its way through high cirrus clouds. Moons
often have a name, like Harvest Moon or Blue Moon. Naturally, we decided
last night to name it Molly Moon. When we got back home, lots of playing. I
went to bed at 11:30 pm and about that time little Miss Molly went on a
15-minute run through the house at breakneck speed grabbing her toys and
then dumping them somewhere else only to repeat it over and over. I got up
to see what was going on and almost got run over. She is becoming a night
owl. Life goes on.

AHEAD OF THE FRONT. RAIN WITH EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS WILL REPEATEDLY
TRACK NORTHWARD AS THE FRONT MOVES EASTWARD...WITH SEVERAL HOURS OF
STEADY LIGHT TO MODERATE RAINFALL...AND BRIEF PERIODS OF HEAVY
RAINFALL. HEAVIER RAINFALL SHOULD AFFECT THE AREA ALONG AND WEST OF
INTERSTATE 65 THIS MORNING AND EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...THEN SHIFT TO
AREAS EAST OF INTERSTATE 65 LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING
HOURS. RAINFALL TOTALS OF ONE TO TWO INCHES ARE EXPECTED...BUT
LOCALLY HEAVIER RAINFALL WILL ARE POSSIBLE.

MANY LOCATIONS IN NORTH CENTRAL ALABAMA HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED RECORD
OR NEAR RECORD RAINFALL AMOUNTS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER...WITH
MUCH OF THE RAINFALL BEING RECORDED WITHIN THE LAST 7 TO 10 DAYS.
THE GROUND OVER MUCH OF THE WATCH AREA IS NEARLY SATURATED.
ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAIN WILL RUNOFF QUICKLY AND CAUSE CREEKS AND
STREAMS TO FILL QUICKLY...AND COULD LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS, CREEKS AND
OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS IS POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA. PEOPLE IN THE
WATCH AREA SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER AND BE PREPARED FOR
IMMEDIATE ACTION SHOULD HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODING OCCUR OR A FLASH
FLOOD WARNING BE ISSUED.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND OTHER LOCAL MEDIA FOR FURTHER
DETAILS OR UPDATES.

...A Good Soaking for Alabama...

Wet weather headlines our forecast for Alabama today as rain becomes
widespread this morning. The rain will continue this afternoon and tonight,
and a few thunderstorms could be involved as well. At the moment we do not
expect a significant risk of severe weather since the air will be rather
stable. The primary concern will be heavy rain falling on the saturated
Alabama soil. We are projecting rainfall amounts from 1 to 2 inches across
the northern half of the state tomorrow, with isolated amounts to 3 inches
mainly over the northwest corner. This could mean some flash flooding
problems as the rain gets heavier this afternoon.

The rain should end during the pre-dawn hours tomorrow, followed by
a clearing sky during the day along with cooler temperatures. We will be
close to freezing by daybreak Thursday, and if Birmingham reaches 32 degrees
it will be our first freeze of the season, one of the latest on record. The
rest of the week will feature dry and cool weather statewide.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At first glance the weekend looks mostly dry with a
decent amount of sunshine both days and seasonal temperatures (highs in the
50s, lows in the 30s). Some rain will likely return by Monday of next week
in advance of the next storm system moving along in the southern branch of
the jet stream.

GLOBAL WARMING? Amarillo, Texas has measured 13.8 inches of snow so
far this November, making it their snowiest November on record. Our in
Sacramento, CA yesterday morning the low was 28 degrees, a new record low.
Yesterday's high in Denver was only 22 degrees, they were expected to drop
to near zero degrees early this morning.
