...Rain Returns By Sunday...
We expect to squeeze in two more dry days before wet weather returns to Alabama late in the weekend. With ample sunshine today, temperatures will rise into the upper 50s, about normal for early December in Alabama. Expect similar weather tomorrow, although clouds will begin to thicken late in the day.
NEXT RAIN EVENT: Rain should become widespread across Alabama on Sunday as moist air from the Gulf of Mexico rides up and over a shallow layer of cooler air at the surface. Then, a warm front moves north of the state Sunday night, and will bring unstable air in here which could set the stage for strong thunderstorms late Sunday night into Monday morning.
At this time we expect one to two inches of rain across much of north and central Alabama from 6:00 a.m. Sunday through the midday hours on Monday. The best chance of stronger storms will come from about midnight Sunday night through noon on Monday. We will be watching for the possibilities of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms as the event gets closer, but it does not look as potent as the pre-Thanksgiving storm system back on November 23-24.
THE LONG RANGE: Still looks like the coldest air of the season could be moving into the deep south sometime in the December 16-19 time frame. Way too early to be specific.
BAMA WATERLOGGED: In Pinson, cooperative observer James Price has kept very detailed daily weather records since 1951. He reports a total of 14.13Â in November of this year, making it the wettest November on record there. At the Birmingham Airport during September, October, and November, the rain total was 24.71Â, the second wettest meteorological fall on record.
