...Cool and Dry Weather...

Rather benign weather will continue across Alabama through Saturday,
with mostly sunny cool days and clear cold nights. Temperatures will be well
down in the 30s again early tomorrow and Saturday morning.

Most of our attention is focused on the next storm system that
should bring rain back to the state beginning on Sunday. Rather generous
rain totals are possible late in the weekend as moist air from the Gulf
rides up over cooler and stable air near the surface. Then, Monday of next
week, a warm front will move northward through the state, putting us in the
warm sector of the storm which features unstable air. This could mean the
threat of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms on Monday. The ground remains
soaked, so once again flooding will be a concern in addition to the
possibility of a few severe storms if we can get into the warm sector.

MID-MONTH COLD SNAP? Some of the longer range computer models are
hinting at the coldest air so far this season slipping in here at some point
in the 10 to 15 day time frame. Way too early to be specific, but there has
been some good model consistency in this, and surface pressures continue to
rise over much of Canada as the cold air builds.

SOGGY PITTSBURGH: Even though we just started December, this is
already the wettest year on record in Pittsburgh, where the total is now up
to 54.82". Normal yearly precipitation there is only 37.85".

AN L.A. CHILL: Yesterday's low temperature in Burbank, CA was 33
degrees, a few record for December 1. Coldest spot in the "lower 48"
yesterday was Gunnison, CO with -22. Eagle, CO dropped to -15.
