...Watching Ike...

This week is the anniversary of Hurricane Frederic, which devastated
the Alabama coast back in 1979. Once again, we are watching a
potentially destructive hurricane poised to enter the southeastern
Gulf of Mexico. It will be an interesting week in the weather office.

OUR WEATHER: On the weather maps this morning, we find high pressure
centered over the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia. The
Bermuda high remains strong across the Atlantic and is ridged back
into the Deep South. The weaterlies are over the northern tier of
states, where they should be, but a change in the upper pattern is
about to happen. That will affect the final player on our stage,
Hurricane Ike. Ike is moving through the southern Bahamas this morning.

WHAT ABOUT IKE? Ike is a major hurricane this morning. It is moving
westward now and will gradually describe a slow crurve around the
subtropical high pressure ridge. Shoved fairly far to the south, it
will likely move across much of the island nation of Cuba. As we have
seen before, that land interaction will disrupt the hurricane and
weaken it. It will spend the better part of Monday moving across
Cuba, and will consequently weaken to a Category One hurricane before
re-emerging into the southeastern Gulf of Tuesday morning. All this
is great news for the Florida Keys, which may avoid a direct hit from
a Category Four or Five Ike, and should only catch the periphery.
Still, lots of uncertainty in the forecast and there are in that cone,
so evacuations are very prudent and underway. A trough will develop
by Tuesday in the Plains and swing eastward. This trough should pull
Ike north and eventually northeastward toward Tampa or Cedar Key.
Again, lots of uncertainty in the track forecast. If this trough
fails to pick up the hurricane, Ike will wander into the North Central
Gulf and could threaten areas from Texas to Florida. In any case, it
should be a major hurricane wherever it lands.

FOR US: We should be dry and warm today and Monday with highs around
90. A stationary front across southern sections of Alabama and
Georgia will come back northward Monday night, potentially accompanied
by a few showers. Tuesday will see showers and storms spreading into
the area ahead of the approaching front and weakening trough. By
Wednesday, another passing shortwave will produce more showers and
storms, especially south and east of the front, which should be
aligned along I-59. Now Thursday will see us coming under the
influence of Ike, located south of the Alabama coast. We should see a
good slug of tropical moisture by then meaning a good chance of
showers and storm. The main event may wait until Saturday as the
hurricane merges with the front, coming on shore possible in the
Mobile to Destin region and giving much as Alabama a significant rain
and wind event into Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1663: The topic of conversation at the meeting of the
Royal Society of London on this date was a Dr. John Dee, a member of
the Society a century before. It seems that Dr. Dee had kept
observations of weather conditions for over 7 years and by studying
them had acquired great skill at predicting the weather. The feat did
not earn him acclaim for meteorology. He was accused of being a
witch! Fortunately, the Society was not a superstitious lot in 1663,
and appointed Robert Hooke to record a history of the weather.

...Hannah And Ike...

Last week it was Gustav and Hanna. This week it is Hanna and Ike.
Hanna will cause inclement weather all the way up the East Coast and
across the Atlantic eventually to Ireland. Ike poses a serious threat
to the United States.

HANNA: Hanna was still a tropical storm early this afternoon, passing
about 50 miles southeast of Richmond, Virginia. It will continue
moving northeast very quickly, at over 25 mph. Sustained tropical
storm force winds will be felt over a wide area, with warnings as far
north as Maine They might see some tropical storm force gusts in
D.C. where it is a miserable day. There will be tidal flooding in the
Delaware Bay, New York Harbor and the Long Island Sound as well as
along coastal locations. There will even be a small surge up the
Tidal Potomac in our nation's capital. By tonight, it will be passing
back out to sea near Atlantic City only to make landfall again over
eastern Long Island late tonight. Moving at over 30 mph by that
time,, the center will pass near Boston before it passes over the tip
ot the Cape and starts the long journey across the Atlantic.

IKE: Ike is still a category three hurricane early this afternoon,
about 750 miles east southeast of Key West and about 200 miles east
northeast of the Turks and Caicos, where hurricane warnings are in
effect. Hurricane conditions will arrive there tonight. By noon
tomorrow, tropical storm conditions will be affecting the southern
Bahamas where a hurricane watch is in effect. Ike will then be
picking a course across Cuba, along its north coast or stay over the
Florida Straits. The later greatly increases the threat to the
Florida Keys, which are extremely vulnerable. If it goes across Cuba,
it will fall to a Cat One. If it skims the coast, it should fall to a
Cat Two. If the center stays only the Florida Straits, it could be a
Category Four. Tropical storm force winds could arrive in the Keys as
early as Monday afternoon. And then it is into the Gulf. It will be
a changing situation as Ike steams into the Gulf with a myriad of
possibilities. We cannot rule out a landfall no the Central Gulf
Coast in the coming week, so all interest from Texas to Florida have
to be on their toes.

ALABAMA'S WEATHER: A Central Gulf Coast landfall would greatly
affect our weather with a surge of tropical moisture and wind. For
today, scattered showers and a couple of storms will be possible, but
coverage will be small. Mostly dry conditions should prevail tomorrow
and Monday with warm temperatures. An approaching frontal boundary
will spark scattered storms on Tuesday, but by then all eyes will be
on Ike. That front should push east and fail to pick up Ike on
Wednesday, leaving it to stew in the Gulf. Another approaching trough
will pick it up by Friday and shunt it north or northeast. We will
have to wait and see just where.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Sultry in South Florida where UAB is playing.
Gametime temperatures near 90 and only a small chance of a shower.
Alabama takes on the Green Wave of Tulane at 6 p.m. in a Bryant-Denny
tilt. Only a small chance of a poncho with temperatures falling
through the 80s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1846: A powerful, slow-moving hurricane literally
reshaped the geography of the North Carolina Outer Banks. Intense
northeast winds pushed a tremendous storm surge over the Outer Banks.
As the storm moved inland, winds over the barrier islands turned to
the southwest, pushing the waters over the Outer Banks from the west.
Two new inlets carved out by the hurricane still exist today, Hatteras
Inlet and Oregon Inlet. Oregon Inlet is named for the Oregon, the
first ship to pass through the cut.

...I Don't Like Ike...

It's a Saturday double feature in the tropical
theatre as we track Tropical Storm Hanna moving through the Mid-
Atlantic states on this early September Saturday and nervously eye
Major Hurricane Ike, taking aim on the Bahamas and potentially the
Florida Keys or South Florida.

FIRST…HANNA: Tropical Storm Hanna made landfall on the
North Carolina coast west of Wilmington. It is moving quickly north
northeast over eastern North Carolina. It will pass into Virginia
around lunchtime, potentially sending a significant surge up the Tidal
Potomac. Similar storms have caused flooding in places like
Alexandria, Virginia. It will move off the Delmarva peninsula this
afternoon and parallel the coast until it crosses the eastern end of
Long Island after midnight. Still a tropical storm, the system will
move over Cape Cod just a couple of hours later as it moves
northeastward at nearly 40 mph.

IKE: Hurricane Ike is about 200 miles east of the Turks
and Caicos Islands, southeast of the Bahamas. Hurricane warnings are
in effect for the Bahamas. The hurricane has been undergoing some
northerly shear and weakened a bit after redeveloping an eye on
satellite images last night. As that shear weakens today, re-
intensification will occur and Ike should be a category three
hurricane as it approaches the islands of the southeastern Bahamas
tomorrow morning. It should continue moving westward at about 13 mph
as it passes through the Bahamas on Sunday. Moving over high oceanic
heat content waters, Ike will intensify further and likely reach
category four status by Monday morning, some 325 miles east southeast
of Key West. Still lots of uncertainty about the track. The
hurricane could move over the island of Cuba, which would knock it
down a notch or two in intensity. It could move directly across the
Florida Keys as a category four or even a category five hurricane.
This potential threat has prompted visitor evacuations effective this
morning. Residents will leave on Sunday. Tropical storm force winds
could reach the Keys Monday afternoon. It would then enter the Gulf
of Mexico. There is a chance that it could turn northeast over
Florida like 1960's Hurricane Donna. It could turn north and parallel
the West Coast of Florida, and it could move toward the Central Gulf
Coast.

OUR FORECAST: Hanna to the east is producing sinking
air over much of Alabama. A trough of low pressure is to our west.
As Hanna exits stage right today, the trough will slide eastward,
bringing a chance of showers and storms to the state, but coverage
will be low. Sunday and Monday will be nice. A weak front will slide
in on Tuesday with scattered storms. Weather starting Wednesday may
depend on Ike's eventual track.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Southern Miss is at Auburn for an
11:30 kick off. About a 1 in 4 chance of a shower and game
temperatures 85 to 88. UAB is way down at Boca Raton to play South
Florida at 3:00 p.m. Little or no chance of rain and a high near 90.
Finally, Tulane comes to Tuscaloosa for a 6:00 p.m. kick off with
Alabama. Temperature should be in the mid 80s at kick off falling into
the upper 70s later in the game. Little or no risk of a shower.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: Weather Bureau forecasters were
tracking a tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. But they were
seriously mistaken in where they thought it was located. The
meteorologists believed that it had passed over Key West and was
headed north-northeast toward Tampa where it would cross the Florida
Peninsula. They warned stations along the Mid-Atlantic States in
places like North Carolina that they would deal with a tropical storm
a couple of days later. The storm was actually headed toward Texas.
In Galveston, where the storm would make landfall two days later with
devastating results, the weather was clear and hot.

...Tropical Worries Increase...

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: There was an old lazy stalled front parallel to
the Alabama/Mississippi border all morning. It has been interesting
how some showers and a few thunderstorms have persisted near that
front since yesterday afternoon. Believe it or not, some folks got
some beneficial rain in the last 24 hours. For example, there was 0.80
at Gainesville Lock and Dam, 0.75 at Demopolis Lock and Dam, 0.84 in
Bankhead National Forest and 0.44 at Muscle Shoals Airport. This
afternoon there was a row of north-south showers lined up along the
western edge of the state. This included some lightning over several
SW Alabama counties.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: We think the chance of a shower or thunderstorm
tonight and Saturday is rather small—maybe a 1 in 5 risk. By Sunday,
the old stalled front will tippy-toe through the state as a dry front
(do not want to call it a cold front). This will result in mostly
sunshine Sunday and Monday and it will not be as humid. High
temperatures for the next 4 or 5 days will fall mostly between 88 and
90. Some nice pleasant mid 60s in the wee morning hours Sunday and
Monday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight, only a small chance
of a shower during any one game. Temperatures will be in the lower 80s
at kick off and falling into the 70s. In college football Saturday,
Southern Miss is at Auburn for an 11:30 kick off. About a 1 in 4
chance of a shower and game temperatures 85 to 88. UAB is way down at
Boca Raton to play South Florida at 3:00 p.m. Little or no chance of
rain and a high near 90. Finally, Tulane comes to Tuscaloosa for a
6:00 p.m. kick off with Alabama. Temperature should be in the mid 80s
at kick off falling into the upper 70s later in the game. Little or no
risk of a shower.

WORRISOME TROPICS: That is going to require most of our attention
over the next 5 days. The main villains are Hanna and Ike. Tropical
Storm Hanna had grown stronger this afternoon and was almost a
hurricane. She is a large storm and will make landfall probably by
Saturday morning on the South Carolina coast and continue
northeastward up the Atlantic Seaboard. She will not affect Alabama,
but she will dump very heavy rain all the way Washington, New York,
Boston and even to the Maine coast. Hurricane Ike is a lot more
dangerous. He was still a Category 3 hurricane today. It is
troublesome that recent models and guidance have shifted his path more
southward. The official NHC track forecast brings him between Miami
and Cuba to a position off the SW coast of Florida by early Wednesday.
A bunch of other models seem to agree. That is a little bit far away
to be specific yet, but it sure raises a lot of alarms. He will
probably be a major hurricane with disastrous affects wherever he
decides to land.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another late, late bedtime for poor
Little Miss Molly. We were all watching the Convention last night, so
Molly did not see her final bedtime until 1:00 a.m. She seems to be a
bit confused by all of this and is indecisive where she wants to
sleep. Sometimes we have to chase her down to put her on the king-size
bed. However, she sure gets a good long sleep between 1:00 a.m. and
9:00 a.m. Then she rings the little doorbell on the back door and
stands there waiting for someone to react. If we do not right away,
she roams through the house until she finds us, sits down, looks up at
us with a steel glare. Translation: I need to go to the bathroom. I
took her out this morning and she immediately folded up for another
long nap afterwards. She truly lives the life of Miss Riley.

...A Few Scattered Showers Today...

BRING ON THE WEEKEND: The moisture axis associated with former
Hurricane Gustav (which is now over the Great Lakes) will move over
Alabama today, and accordingly we will mention the chance of scattered
showers statewide. Rain totals should be light and spotty, and most of
the showers will end once the sun goes down tonight. Drier air will
begin to enter the state tomorrow, and most of the showers will be
confined to the eastern third of the state. The dry air takes over
Sunday, and we should be rain free on Sunday and into the first part
of next week with lower humidity values.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, there is an outside
risk of shower, otherwise the sky will be clearing with temperatures
falling from the low 80s into the upper 70s. Tomorrow, Auburn hosts
Southern Miss at 11:30; we expect a mix of sun and clouds with about a
one in four chance of a shower during the game. The kickoff
temperature will be near 84 degrees, rising to around 86 by the fourth
quarter. Alabama will host Tulane in Tuscaloosa at 6:00; the sky will
be generally clear with a kickoff temperature of 86, falling into the
upper 70s by the end of the game. UAB will be down in South Florida to
play Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton (north of Miami) at 3:00.
Hurricane Ike will be too far away to be a factor, thankfully; the sky
will be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature of 87 degrees.

TROPICAL TRIO: Hanna should make landfall somewhere around Wilmington,
North Carolina tonight as a strong tropical storm. The system will
then move pretty much along the coast all the way to Cape Cod over the
weekend; the main threat from Hanna will be downed trees and power
outages. Serious flooding issues are not expected since the system is
moving quickly. Hanna will not impact Alabama; if anything it will
help to pull drier, continental air into the U.S. from the north.

EYEING IKE: Hurricane Ike is the one to watch; it is forecast to be
very close to Miami by Tuesday of next week, possibly as a major
hurricane. We believe an upper trough over the eastern half of the
U.S. will turn Ike northward before entering the Gulf of Mexico, but
that is not carved in stone. Most of the better computer models turn
Ike up the East Coast of Florida; then it moves northeast, very close
to the coast, all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. On the
other hand, if the north turn happens early enough, it might miss the
U.S. coast completely and recurve into the open Atlantic. But,
residents of Florida from Key West to Miami to Daytona Beach will need
to monitor the progress of Ike very closely, and be ready to begin
hurricane preparedness actions this weekend.

JOSEPHINE: Our third system is a tropical storm over the eastern
Atlantic; it will move steadily to the west/northwest in coming days
with little change in strength due to hostile upper air winds and
upwelling from Ike.

THIS DATE IN 1925: The high in Centreville was 112; that still stands
today as Alabama's hottest temperature.

...Weather Relatively Quiet...

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: There could still be some showers around
Saturday morning, but there are signs that a cool front will be moving
into Alabama not bringing any sweater weather but some lower humidity.
We think Sunday and Monday will be mostly sunshine without a threat of
rain and you may notice a slight drop in humidity by Sunday. After all
it is September and about time that we get some breaks.

So, we got the cart before the horse, thus we need to back up and
discuss earlier weather. There is a chance of some showers tonight and
probably a better chance Friday. You might even hear a peal of thunder
or so on Friday. No all-day rain and certainly no wash out. The high
school football games Friday night should have a decent chance of not
being interrupted by rain. Looks good for the college football games
on Saturday, especially the afternoon and evening games. We will have
a more specific football forecast starting in the morning edition
tomorrow.

The scattered showers tonight and Friday and possibly into Saturday
morning can be credited to leftover moisture from Tropical Storm
Gustav. The low-pressure area, which is the signature of all that was
left of Gustav, was centered over Missouri this afternoon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The biggest concern on the tropical horizon is
Hurricane Ike with sustained winds of 140 mph making him a Category 4.
Indications are that he will be moving through the Bahamas Monday and
after that there may be a threat to the east coast of Florida. You
cannot issue you a money-back guarantee that he will not try to get in
the Gulf of Mexico. It will be a crucial watch and wait game starting
early next week. Meanwhile, it appears that Hanna will have an affect
on the east coast. She had sustained winds of 65 mph this afternoon.
Her projected track is to curve northward passing east of
Jacksonville, Savannah and Charleston and making landfall on the North
Carolina coast, then continuing up the east coast to near Portland,
Maine. The first part of that track represents a slightly eastward
shift. She has projected to become a hurricane near the South Carolina
coast, but not a major one

GLOBAL ROAMING: Anchorage finished the month of August around 2
degrees cooler than average. The entire summer there has been cooler
than normal overall. In Birmingham, we did not
reach 100 a single time during August and overall the month averaged
10 degrees cooler than a year ago when we had a bunch of days 100 or
higher. 111 in Death Valley was the hottest in the country yesterday.
Lows this morning included 26 at Stanley, Idaho and 30 at Anaktuvuk,
Alaska. Heavy rain from Gustav has given Little Rock a 13-inch surplus
for the year. Just in the last 24 hours, Little Rock got 3.49,
Springfield, Missouri 2.98 and Memphis over 1 inch. Our global
atmosphere has a weight equal to a layer of water covering the entire
earth for a depth of 34 feet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: First a personal note. I am the
behindest I have ever been on replying to email. I treasure your
notes, so please keep them coming. I will definitely
acknowledge all of them. I appreciate how many people love Little Miss
Molly, seemingly as much as me. A friend in Hueytown with two Shi-Tzus
will have both of them at the puppy beauty shop today. That is always
an experience. Molly had her feelings hurt last night because we would
not let her sleep in the living area with the grandkids. After putting
her to bed, she jumped down several times and tried to escape. When
she finally settled down, she insisted on sleeping at the foot of the
bed away from us. Life goes on.

...Showers Return To Alabama...

A FEW RAIN DROPS: Gustav is still impacting the weather here in
Alabama. The center of circulation of the former hurricane will begin
to move northward through Missouri, and the trailing moisture axis
will slip into Alabama from the west. Accordingly, we figure the sky
will remain generally cloudy today, with a few showers or periods of
light rain. The moisture axis will remain over the state tomorrow and
Saturday, so we will maintain the chance of a few showers on both
days. Looks like we will stay well below 90 due to the clouds and
showers; most spots will see a high somewhere between 84 and 88
degrees. The heaviest rain associated with Gustav will be in the broad
area from St. Louis to Chicago today.

OUR WEEKEND: While we will maintain the chance of showers on Saturday,
drier air should move back in here with a mostly sunny sky on Sunday
and Monday. We are forecasting mid 80s Saturday, followed by upper 80s
on Sunday.

HANNA: Very active weather continues in the tropics. Tropical Storm
Hanna is expected to grow into a hurricane during the next 24 hours;
the latest NHC track puts the system into the North Carolina coast
near Wilmington early Saturday. Then, Hanna will move northeast, very
close to the coastline, bringing lots of wind and rain all the way to
Cape Cod by Sunday. While Hanna is expected to be a category one
hurricane at the time of landfall, it will have the potential for
downed trees and power outages along the path. Alabama remains well to
the west of Hanna, and it will not have any impact on our weather.

IKE: This one strengthened into a major hurricane early last night,
with sustained winds of 120 mph. Ike is in the Central Atlantic now,
and should be somewhere between Havanna and Nassau late in the
weekend. Most of the global computer models show Ike turning to the
north before reaching the Gulf of Mexico; at this time it looks like
it could be a problem for the Atlantic coast next week. There is also
a chance it might not make landfall in the U.S. if the north turn
comes early enough.

JOSEPHINE: Our third member of the trio is in the far eastern
Atlantic; it will move to the west/northwest in coming days remaining
over open water. Still too early to determine if this will be a
problem for the U.S. East Coast, or if it will recurve harmlessly into
the open Atlantic ocean. Most likely, this one will remain a tropical
storm over the next five days.

FINAL GUSTAV NOTES: 8.94 inches was the largest rain total we could
find in Alabama during Gustav's visit. That was at Tillman's Corner
which is on the SW edge of Mobile. (Don't confuse it with Toomer's
Corner in Auburn where football fans roll the trees with the lowest-
priced toilet paper they can find after every Auburn victory) . 16.37
inches was the storm total so far at Bunkie, La., but, remember, that
is not the final score. It was still pouring rain in parts of
Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas this morning and even into Missouri.

...Still Watching The Tropics...

THE ALABAMA STORY: Still plenty of interesting news about the
overactive Tropics currently, but for the time being, Alabama will be
greatly unaffected. Gustav dumped heavy rain over SW Alabama, but the
rest of the state got very little and we have not had much since.

Weather models disagree on our chances of showers for the next few
days. One of the most dependable models increases the chance of
showers considerably, but we are leaning toward another model that we
use a lot that limits the number of showers. It looks like we will
have a small chance almost every day until probably a slight increase
on Saturday. It appears that we could have a weak cool front moving
across our area by this weekend and bringing us a mostly dry Sunday
and a slight drop in humidity.

A NOT SO BAD AUGUST: It is autumn as far as the weather community is
concerned. Our final month of summer, August, was not bad at all. We
had an average daily high of 88.7 and we did not reach the 100-degree
mark a single time. That is a sharp contrast to last August when we
had an average daily high of 98.4—10 degrees hotter than this August.
Every day last August had temperatures in the 90s or higher and 13
days saw 100 or higher. We were in the midst of a severe drought last
year. It is interesting to note that the Birmingham rain surplus is an
even 6.00 inches as of this morning. We have received 43.86 inches of
rain so far this year—more than double the amount at the same time
last year. Remember, droughts and heat waves are first cousins. They
go hand in hand.

THE EXCITING TROPICS: The circulation that is still part of Gustav
was moving slowly at only 2 mph into Missouri this morning and still
dumping extremely heavy amounts of rain. Most of this rain is
remaining just west of Alabama. Still some heavy amounts coming down
over Louisiana Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri and that heavy rain
will spread NE as the center of Gustav moves that way. Even Northern
Illinois and part of Michigan should get several inches. We have three
more named storms in the Atlantic to watch out for. They are Hanna,
Ike and Josephine. Hanna is our most concern now. She is expected to
eventually move NW, maybe remaining off the east coast of Florida and
making landfall somewhere along the South Carolina or North Carolina
coast Saturday morning. After that, she should parallel the Atlantic
Seaboard all the way into the far northeast. We should not get any
rain out of Hanna. Ike will be our next concern. He was still way out
in the Atlantic today, but is projected to move westward, passing
between Cuba and the Bahamas. After that, it is difficult to tell.
Outside chance of another Gulf of Mexico intruder.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With the population of our household
tripled for much of the last year, the noise level understandably
nearly tripled also. With grandkids who do not ever want to go to bed,
Little Miss Molly does not have the opportunity to enjoy peace and
quiet as much and long daytime naps. There is almost someone picking
her up to love her. I have noticed that she comes in my office a whole
lot more often asking me to pick her up and hold her. She also loves
to sit on my desk and look out the big window. In doing so, she
occasionally walks across the keyboard on my Apple computer creating a
typo which I need to go back to correct. She helps me because she
keeps swishing that bushy tail across my keyboard keeping it clean.
With her on my desk, our eye level is equal and she gets a lot of
hugs. Sometimes she slows my work, but I do not mind and life goes on.

...Eyes On The Tropics...

A TRIO OF TROPICAL SYSTEMS: Actually, we should probably mention four
tropical systems this morning since Gustav is still causing problems
west of Alabama. The circulation center is north of Texarkana,
Arkansas, and drifting to the north. Once again today, a few isolated
tornadoes are possible in spiral bands east of the circulation center
over parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Heavy rain will
continue, and flash flooding problems could worsen. All of that rain
will remain west of our state, and we expect most Alabama communities
to stay dry today with a high in the mid to upper 80s with scattered
to broken clouds.

In fact, our weather should remain very quiet through the weekend with
daily highs between 87 and 90 degrees. There could be enough moisture
for a few widely scattered showers this weekend, but widespread rain
is not expected. The tropics continue to be the big weather story, and
we have systems lined up all the way to near the African coast. Lets
take them from west to east….

HANNA: This one, just south of the Bahamas, has really struggled
during the last 24 hours due to strong winds aloft over the system.
However, the shear is expected to go away by tomorrow, and there is a
decent chance Hanna will be a hurricane on Friday. The latest NHC
track has the system passing just east (by only 50 to 100 miles) of
Daytona Beach and Jacksonville, on a northward journey to the South
Atlantic Coast, where landfall should be somewhere between Savannah
and Charleston Friday night. Everyone from Miami north to Cape
Hatteras will need to monitor the progress of Hanna; the NHC shows the
storm as a category one hurricane at the time of landfall, but with
reduced shear and the warm Gulf Stream, it might be stronger. After
landfall, Hanna will move up toward New England over the weekend
bringing windy and wet weather to places like New York City and Boston
by Saturday night and Sunday.

IKE: There is a decent chance Ike will be a hurricane by the time you
read this. Ike is in the middle of the Atlantic, and is forecast to
move west to a position just north of the eastern tip of Cuba this
weekend. From there, it could threaten the Florida peninsula, or move
through the Florida Straights into the Gulf of Mexico. There is a
chance Ike could become a major hurricane in coming
days.

JOSEPHINE: This is a tropical storm in the far eastern Atlantic; it
will move west/northwest, into water that is slightly cooler due to
upwelling from Ike. Too early to determine if Josephine will recurve
into the open Atlantic, or head toward the U.S. mainland.

SEPTEMBER 1925: The worst of the big 1925 heat wave in Alabama was in
September outside of our normal hottest months of June, July and
August, but the heat started earlier than September. It was so hot
that Alabama's all-time high of 112 was recorded at Centreville in
Bibb County on September 5. Birmingham had 106 on the same day. On
this date, September 3, the Birmingham high in 1925 was 102. Virtually
no air conditioning, meaning the human suffering was extreme. It was
very dry also.

...Relatively Few Showers...

ALABAMA ESCAPED MOST OF GUSTAV: Not everybody did, however. It was an
amazing scene of spiral bands forming over the Gulf of Mexico and
becoming a part of his circulation. They swirled into SW Alabama
starting Sunday and were still doing so this morning, although more
limited. Today the more numerous and strongest spiral bands shifted
westward to Mississippi and Louisiana.

Most of Alabama was left high and dry by Gustav, but the extreme SW
got a thorough soaking. Here are some storm totals in Baldwin and
Mobile Counties:

7.62 at Saraland
8.94 Tillman's Corner
7.87 Fairhope
8.59 Seven miles SW of Foley

NOW WHAT? Several mostly dry days ahead for Alabama. The risk of a
shower is quite small each day, maybe a little better on the west side
of the state. Here is Central Alabama our better chance of a shower or
thunderstorm will probably be about Saturday. Meanwhile, daytime
temperatures will be relatively comfortable—mostly between 88 and 90.

THE TROPICAL PARADE: They are scattered out all across the Atlantic.
The circulation that is left of Gustav was centered near Shreveport
this afternoon. The circulation is still well defined and he was
dumping much, much rain in Mississippi and Louisiana. The spiral bands
circulating northward into his center prompted some Flash Flood
Warnings and even a few Tornado Warnings in Mississippi. Now we look
eastward to Hanna. The latest track forecast has not changed a great
deal. She is expected to regain hurricane strength and move NW through
the Bahamas coming very close to Jacksonville, Savannah and then with
landfall in South Carolina and moving NE to Virginia and all the way
to New England. Mind you, that is subject to change, but some of our
guidance indicates a wide band of heavy rain 5 inches or more all the
way from South Carolina to Massachusetts. Tropical Storm Ike was out
in the middle of the Atlantic moving west at 18 mph. The long-range
projection is for him to possibly threaten the U.S. over the weekend.
And finally, there is Josephine. It is too early to predict her
eventual landfall, but she may turn more northward.

TROPICAL ROAMING: We hope to get a complete list of rain amounts from
Gustav in places like Louisiana and Mississippi later. Some of the
reports are missing so far. One that we do have is 4.78 inches at
McComb, Mississippi. 103 was the hottest in the USA yesterday at Palm
Springs, California. Cold spots this morning at McCall, Idaho and 27
at Eagle, Alaska. We have not checked on good old Deadhorse lately. At
noon they had 39 degrees and a wind chill of 29 because of winds over
20.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal and I did not get
in bed until after 1:00 a.m. She sometimes naps on the couch until I
get ready. I often wonder what her thoughts are. I talk to her like
she is human and ask her to stay around a long, long time. The way she
looks at me I sometimes wonder if she is asking me why we took away
her motherhood. She has the personality to make her love to play with
her own little children (puppies). She fell deeply in love with Jo-Jo
and more lately with Dino, the little Yorkie. They simply love each
other. When Dino comes by our house on the way to a bathroom break, he
insists on plopping down in our front yard to wait patiently to see
him out the front door. I quickly grab the leash and take Molly out
and they have a reunion like they have not seen each other for a
month. Life goes on.
