...Showers Return To Alabama...
A FEW RAIN DROPS: Gustav is still impacting the weather here in
Alabama. The center of circulation of the former hurricane will begin
to move northward through Missouri, and the trailing moisture axis
will slip into Alabama from the west. Accordingly, we figure the sky
will remain generally cloudy today, with a few showers or periods of
light rain. The moisture axis will remain over the state tomorrow and
Saturday, so we will maintain the chance of a few showers on both
days. Looks like we will stay well below 90 due to the clouds and
showers; most spots will see a high somewhere between 84 and 88
degrees. The heaviest rain associated with Gustav will be in the broad
area from St. Louis to Chicago today.
OUR WEEKEND: While we will maintain the chance of showers on Saturday,
drier air should move back in here with a mostly sunny sky on Sunday
and Monday. We are forecasting mid 80s Saturday, followed by upper 80s
on Sunday.
HANNA: Very active weather continues in the tropics. Tropical Storm
Hanna is expected to grow into a hurricane during the next 24 hours;
the latest NHC track puts the system into the North Carolina coast
near Wilmington early Saturday. Then, Hanna will move northeast, very
close to the coastline, bringing lots of wind and rain all the way to
Cape Cod by Sunday. While Hanna is expected to be a category one
hurricane at the time of landfall, it will have the potential for
downed trees and power outages along the path. Alabama remains well to
the west of Hanna, and it will not have any impact on our weather.
IKE: This one strengthened into a major hurricane early last night,
with sustained winds of 120 mph. Ike is in the Central Atlantic now,
and should be somewhere between Havanna and Nassau late in the
weekend. Most of the global computer models show Ike turning to the
north before reaching the Gulf of Mexico; at this time it looks like
it could be a problem for the Atlantic coast next week. There is also
a chance it might not make landfall in the U.S. if the north turn
comes early enough.
JOSEPHINE: Our third member of the trio is in the far eastern
Atlantic; it will move to the west/northwest in coming days remaining
over open water. Still too early to determine if this will be a
problem for the U.S. East Coast, or if it will recurve harmlessly into
the open Atlantic ocean. Most likely, this one will remain a tropical
storm over the next five days.
FINAL GUSTAV NOTES: 8.94 inches was the largest rain total we could
find in Alabama during Gustav's visit. That was at Tillman's Corner
which is on the SW edge of Mobile. (Don't confuse it with Toomer's
Corner in Auburn where football fans roll the trees with the lowest-
priced toilet paper they can find after every Auburn victory) . 16.37
inches was the storm total so far at Bunkie, La., but, remember, that
is not the final score. It was still pouring rain in parts of
Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas this morning and even into Missouri.
