...Another Fabulous Day...

Today will be another very nice day weather wise across Central
Alabama. Temperatures will warm to around 80 degrees today, with
plenty of sunshine. This means great weather for today's Aaron's 499
NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Talladega.

HIGH PRESSURE IN CONTROL: Surface high pressure is located near Hot
Springs, Arkansas on this Sunday morning. This high will be the
dominant feature in our weather through Tuesday. It will give us
mainly fair, fine weather. Look for daytime highs to be in the 80s.
Lows will be in the 50s. Moisture levels will be on the increase by
Wednesday, but we might make it through hump day with out any
precipitation. That will change by Thursday.

UPPER LOW: Our next weather maker will an upper low that can be
found this morning over Baja California. This low will pinwheel
slowly to the east and northeast, making it to the southern Plains by
Tuesday. It will be working in conjunction with a nice return flow
off the Gulf of Mexico to produce widespread rain and storms over
Texas, but as it heads our way, it will be weakening quickly. In
fact, by late Wednesday, it will barely be recognizable as a closed
low. But, building high pressure over the Great Lakes will push a
cool front southward at the same time. This may cause showers and
storms across the area on Thursday. The GFS went quite bullish on
this system yesterday, so it will be interesting to see if this trend
continues. The wet pattern is forecast to continue into the weekend
and perhaps even into the following week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: The City of New Orleans breathed a sigh of
relief as the State of Louisiana allowed the dynamiting of the St.
Bernard levee, creating a spillway for the raging river to follow and
flooding all of Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish. City leaders had
promised residents of the flooded area full restitution for their
losses, but they would renege on those promises in a travesty of
justice

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter
scale was felt across a wide area of the Southeast. The tremor,
centered just east of Fort Payne, Alabama, rattled parts of Alabama,
Georgia, Tennessee, northeast Mississippi, Kentucky, South Carolina
and North Carolina. The earthquake very nearly was the largest ever
recorded in Alabama, behind an October 1916 tremor that measured 5.1
on the Richter scale. Dishes crashed from shelves, items fell off
walls, bricks fell from chimneys and windows cracked, but damage was
relatively minor. Hundreds of calls came into 911 dispatch centers
across the area within minutes after the earthquake. The event was
not terribly unusual, although rare. Two minor faults like across
parts of northwestern Georgia and earthquakes occur there about every
10-20 years.

....Welcome Race Fans...

Two of the biggest sports weekends of the year in Alabama are when
NASCAR comes to Alabama. Over one hundred thousand fans will flock to
the iconic track to take in the spectacle of white knuckle racing at
its finest this weekend. And the weather looks to be picture perfect!

MAIN EVENTTHROUGH TONIGHT: Regional radars are clear this afternoon.
In fact, the closest precipitation to Birmingham at mid-afternoon was
some light showers over the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee and
western North Carolina. A well developed field of stratocumulus
clouds covered the northern half of the state. Those clouds are
indicative of the relatively unstable conditions aloft with cooler air
over a warming layer near the surface. We can't rule out a few
instability showers and maybe even an isolated storm somewhere north
of I-20. And rain that does form will dissipate and skies will clear
with the loss of daytime heating this evening. Tonight will see
delightful lows again in the lower 50s. A few spots might make the
40s.

RACE SUNDAY: Tomorrow will dine bright and beautiful. A few clouds
will form during the day, but they will not kill the effect of near
total sunshine. Oh, your mom called. She said don't forget the
sunscreen as you head to the track. Temperatures will rise to right
around 80 or a little warmer in most locations and a nice northerly
breeze will be refreshing.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Surface high pressure will be in charge of Alabama's
weather through Tuesday. This means more fair,, fine weather with
warm temperatures by day and comfortable readings at night. A big
upper level low is off the coast of Baja California this afternoon.
That low will rotate slowly into the Southwest U.S. and over into the
Southern Plains by midweek. As it does, it will pick up on return
from from the Gulf of Mexico thanks to a sprawling high pressure cell
off the Atlantic Coast. It will bring some good rains to our west,
but the system will be weakening as it heads our way. In addition,
building high pressure over the Great Lakes will propel a cold front
our way from the north. This will bring a chance of showers by
Thursday. The morning run of the GFS is a little more excited about
the prospects for some more plentiful rains Thursday into Friday.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.

LESSONS FROM LA PLATA: The lessons learned are not new from the La
Plata, Maryland F4 tornado that killed four people: that established
office policies must be followed to facilitate communication of
critical information and ensure proper storm monitoring. Supercells
often display cycles of weakening and intensification Forecasters
should always be slow to downgrade from a tornado warning. The severe
thunderstorm warning issued at 6:45 carried the familiar line "Severe
thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance
warning." This is important advice for all of us whenever severe
thunderstorm warnings are issued: always be weather aware!

...Shower Possible Today...

It is a busy weekend across Central Alabama, with a weekend of racing
at the Talladega Superspeedway and the Magic City Art Connection in
Birmingham's City Center. The good news is that the weather will be
cooperative.

FOR YOUR SAURDAY: An upper level disturbance will be passing well to
the north of Alabama today. As it moves off to the northeast, a lobe
of vorticity will rotate across northern Alabama. The low level
moisture across the state is rather limited, and showers will be
limited as a result. So, expect mostly cloudy skies across the area
today with a few isolated showers. A storm is not out of the question
as we get a little heating. Most of the activity should be north of
I-20. Fans trekking to Talladega today will enjoy mostly dry
conditions.

TOMORROW: High pressure will be building into Alabama on the heels of
the passing disturbance. Temperatures will start out around 52, and
rise to near 80 by mid afternoon.

THE WEEK AHEAD This high pressure is going to give us some beautiful
conditions through midweek. Daytime readings will be warm, with highs
warming through the 80s. Morning lows will be comfortable, rising
slowly from near 50 Monday morning into the middle 50s by Wednesday
morning.

NEXT WEATHER SYSTEM: A weak front will settle into the Tennessee
Valley by Wednesday, giving a slight chance of showers. A slightly
better chance of showers will be with us on Thursday as moisture
levels increase thanks to a southerly flow that will be becoming more
persistent.

MAGIC CITY ART CONNECTION: Birmingham's world class art festival
continues today at Linn Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Come down and
enjoy a vibrant art experience in the middle of our city center.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The first indications of trouble came early on
Sunday morning, April 28, 2002 as the Storm Prediction Center in
Norman, Oklahoma issued an Outlook for a Moderate Risk of Severe
Weather across a large portion of the Mid Atlantic and Northeast as a
strong low pressure system moved eastward from the Great Lakes.
Accompanied by strong upper level winds, the low pressure system was
forecast to cause widespread wind damage. Later outlook continued to
emphasize the threat and began to mention the possibility of
tornadoes. Persistent cloudiness during the late morning led
forecasters to downgrade the threat to Slight by noon. But by early
afternoon, the severe weather outbreak was underway and a PDS
(Particularly Dangerous Situation) Tornado Watch was issued for
portions of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and western Maryland.
More about the event in today's Weather Blog.

PLEASANT WEEKEND, THEN A WARMING TREND: We will have some
pleasantly cool nights for about the next three nights, but by early
next week the old thermometer, hanging on the Chinaberry tree, will
top out in the mid 80s. We see very little rain for at least the next
five days. I hate to be slapped and kicked around by weather models,
but we have a fairly puzzling situation for Saturday. A minor upper
level disturbance in the NW flow could set off a few showers over the
northern third of the state. Any rain amounts will be light and most
of the showers should be north of Birmingham and north of the
Talladega Racetrack. After the treat tomorrow, Sunday and Monday
should feature mostly sunshine with cool early mornings and mild
afternoons.

NASCAR WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA: Looks good. We believe any showers
that form Saturday afternoon will be north of that area. For the main
race Sunday afternoon, the Aarons 499, should feature mostly sunshine
and a high near 80. Pleasantly cool mornings.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Close to ideal. Low temperatures along the
immediate beach 58 to 60, but mid 50s inland. Highs consistently
around 83 and dry weather all the way through the middle of next week.

THE BIG APPLE HAS IT ALL: I wonder how New York City got the
nickname, Big Apple. They sure are lucky on rain amounts so far this
year, although they had major flood situations at least twice in the
last week. At Central Park, as of this morning, New York has received
30 inches of rain since New Years Day, which is three times as much
as Birmingham. They have a surplus of 6.66 inches. Not as lucky on
snow. The big city received only 12 inches of snow all winter. That
is a shortfall of 10 inches.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Looking around for some temperatures. 24 this
morning in Rawlins on I-80 in Southern Wyoming. 2 below zero at
Atqasak, Alaska. Bettles, Alaska had a record high of 56 this week.
103 yesterday in Death Valley. 82 below zero today at Vostock,
Antarctica. 73 and clear in Baghdad at 8:00 p.m. today (their time).
They expect 95 Monday and 98 Tuesday. Interesting that Hawaii had its
hottest temperature in history on this date in 1931, which was 100 at
Pahala.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and her majority
owner slept until 10:30 this morning. My little pal has had mixed up
hours, so I took a short walk at the crack of dawn by myself. There
were two birds talking to each other about 50 feet apart. I know they
were conversing, because one would say something and then the other.
They may have been saying, "Look how ugly that guy is." Did not take
my first walk with Molly until 11:00 a.m., which is a record. As we
started up the track, we met the guy that has the contract for
cutting the common area grass. He had one of those weed blowers
clearing off the sidewalk. As soon as he got behind us, he turned
that thing on. It sounded just like one of those Capitol Airlines
viscounts revving up at Birmingham Airport. (All of you are too young
to remember those.) Molly might as well have been propelled from a
rocket. I think I accelerated from 3 mph to what seemed like 40 mph.
But I have learned to adjust and not get whiplash. I love my little
girl, but every walk is full of surprises. Life goes on even with
irregular sleep and occasional fatigue. I got 8 hours sleep last
night, record for April 27.

...Not Much Rain For Awhile...

Alabama's weather sure looks dry for the next seven to ten days. While
parts of the state received beneficial rain yesterday; a number of
communities to the east and south of Birmingham reported less than
one-tenth of an inch (some places barely had enough rain to wet the
pavement). It was good to see the big soaking in downtown Birmingham;
the Birmingham Airport reported a storm total of 1.98", which has
reduced the rain deficit for the year to 10.63". However, more than
likely that figure will be over one foot again by the middle part of
next week as another long dry spell is setting up.

Today looks very pleasant with a good supply of sunshine and lower
humidity levels. We are projecting a high in the mid 70s, not far from
normal values for April 27. A fresh breeze out of the west will
continue to bring dry air into the state.

OUR WEEKEND: A disturbance rotating around the back side of a big
upper air low around the Great Lakes will bring some clouds to Alabama
tomorrow, and it might squeeze out a few isolated showers. The best
chance of those showers will be north of I-20 (that runs from
Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston), and even in that part of the
state rain should be light and very spotty.

The chance of the Talladega Superspeedway seeing a shower tomorrow is
only about one in ten. Then, sunshine returns in full force on Sunday.
We are forecasting a high in the mid 70s tomorrow, with upper 70s
Sunday afternoon. Mornings will be pleasant; the cooler valleys have a
chance of reaching the upper 40s both tomorrow and Sunday morning.

NEXT WEEK: As the primary storm track across North America shifts to
the north, afternoons will be warmer. We expect a daily high between
80 and 85 degrees for most communities next week, with partly to
mostly sunny days and fair nights. For now we don't see any
significant weather system to produce rain. In fact, the weather looks
relatively dry through mid-May with the core of the jet stream
remaining over the northern third of the United States.

AT THE BEACH: If you are headed for the Gulf coast this weekend, the
weather will be delightful with mostly sunny days and clear nights. In
fact, the weather looks dry through most of next week as well. Daily
highs will be in the 70s with lows in the upper 50s and low 60s. The
sea water temperature late yesterday afternoon at Panama City Beach
was 72 degrees.

ONE MORE LOOK AT THURSDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals across Alabama yesterday
included 2.16" at Gardendale, 1.90" at Trussville, 1.86" in downtown
Birmingham, 1.65" at Bessemer, 1.52" at Pinson, 1.26" at Tuscaloosa,
1.02" at Fayette, 1.01" at Gadsden, 0.85" at Cullman, and 0.76" at
Jasper. Amounts were much lighter over East Alabama; Munford received
only .13", while the total in the community of Muscadine, in Cleburne
County, was only .02"!

================================================

POT OF GOLD RAINFALL: I am not gifted at estimating how valuable
the rains were that fell across Alabama last night and today, but I
daresay it had to be a billion dollar rain. Just think about the
lower water bills due to not watering the lawn and all the crops that
were saved and the replenishment of some reservoirs. Unfortunately,
everybody did not get a drenching, but many sections of the state
received close to an inch of rain and a number of locations over 2
inches. An extensive list of those rain amounts are on the 33/40
Blog. Here is a list of some of the heavier amounts.

1.66 inches at Birmingham Airport
1.23 at Tuscaloosa
2.28 in Pinson
2.11 in NE Trussville
1.86 in downtown Birmingham
2.14 in Gardendale
1.81 in McCalla

There could still be a few showers and thunderstorms this evening as
a cool front comes through from the west. The cooler air will lower
our high temperatures a few degrees for tomorrow and bring a
substantial drop in humidity.

NASCAR AT THE TALLADEGA RACETRACK: The weather is looking good. We
may see a few showers show up Saturday afternoon, but we believe they
will be north of Talladega County. For the main Aarons 499 race
Sunday, look for dry weather with pleasant temperatures, highs 78 to
80, a cool early morning, with low 48 to 50.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The storm system that brought our rain was a
major one for may parts of the country. In North Texas, major flash
flooding occurred after 6.25 inches of rain fell at Ft. Worth and
5.36 inches at Denton. A Tornado Watch this afternoon for parts of
Indiana and Illinois. National low this morning was 19 at Berlin, New
Hampshire.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another one of those mixed up nights
for Little Miss Molly. I only managed 90 minutes of sleep and she was
up very, very late because of me. Normally when we say, "Time to go
night-night, Molly" she runs and hides. Last night when we said that
about 1:00 a.m., she immediately went in the bedroom and went to bed.
Amazing what the 2 inches of rain in my little corner did. Walking
Molly this morning, everything seemed so fresh. Even the weeds were
smiling and the Old Crow Creek was running again. Even the Old Crow
Motel, which had looked so drab and dry lately, seemed perked up.
Molly waded through every puddle of water she could find. She is just
like a little kid. Life goes on....

...Finally, Some Rain for Alabama...

We welcome rain back to Alabama today following a long dry spell; the
last measurable rain in Birmingham was way back on April 1l, and the
rain deficiency for the year is up to 12.46". The rain today won't
make too much of a dent in that big deficit, but most North Alabama
communities can expect around one-half inch, enough to wet the
pavement and make the grass and flowers happy for a short while. Some
isolated amounts to one inch are possible, mainly in areas north of
Birmingham.

A few strong thunderstorms are possible this morning, but with only
limited instability and weakening wind fields we don't expect any
major problems with severe weather. The showers and storms will be
ending from west to east this afternoon as drier air punches into the
state from the west. It could be that the greatest risk of severe
storms will come this afternoon near the Georgia border, in far East
Alabama, where the air will have some time to destabilize.
Tomorrow promises to be a very nice day with ample sunshine, lower
humidity, and a fresh breeze out of the northwest. The dry and
comfortable weather will last into the weekend.

RACE WEEKEND OUTLOOK: After the round of showers and storms today, the
weather looks excellent for all of the activities this weekend at the
Talladega Superspeedway. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the mid
70s tomorrow and Saturday, with upper 70s likely on Sunday. A few
scattered clouds will show up from time to time, but we have removed
that slight risk of a shower on Saturday because the airmass will be
so dry. Morning temperatures will be cool; a good chance of upper 40s
around the track during the early morning hours on both Saturday and
Sunday. All in all a fine weekend, weather-wise.

AT THE BEACH: If you are beach-bound for the weekend, the weather
looks great down there as well with mostly sunny mild days and clear
pleasant nights. Afternoon highs along the immediate coast will be in
the 70 to 75 degree range, and the sea water temperature last night at
Panama City Beach was 71 degrees.

MAY PREVIEW: Looking ahead to the coming month, Birmingham's average
rainfall during the month of May is 4.83". The average high rises from
78 degrees on May 1 to 84 on May 31. May is still a big part of our
spring tornado season, and some of the most violent tornadoes in
Alabama weather history have come late in the month. For example, an
F4 tornado destroyed much of the town of Brent on May 27, 1973, and
killed five people.

ROAMING: South Bend, Indiana was soaked with 2.48" of rain yesterday.
Triple digit heat returned to the Desert Southwest; the high in Death
Valley, California was 100 degrees.

SHOWERS/STORMS TONIGHT AND THURSDAY: Everything still seems pretty
much on track for our long advertised rain for tonight and Thursday.
This includes the slight possibility of a few severe thunderstorms
late tonight and Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center advanced their
slight risk for much of Alabama to include late tonight, as well as
Thursday. This does not appear to be a major severe weather threat,
especially nothing like the Central and Southern Plains in the last
two days.

Weather models have also backed off on the estimate of total rain
from these storms. Here in Central Alabama, we are hanging on to a
storm total of about 0.80, which includes the rain tonight and
Thursday. The showers and thunderstorms should diminish Thursday
afternoon. After that, it is clear sailing for a nice weekend, in
fact Friday all the way through the weekend.

NASCAR AT TALLADEGA: For a time, we were mentioning a slight chance
of showers Saturday afternoon. We have omitted that and it looks like
dry weather with generally pleasant temperatures for both Saturday
and Sunday. For the Arons 499 race Sunday afternoon, the high should
be between 78 and 80 and mostly sunshine.

THE SOUTH TEXAS SEVERE WEATHER: Communities near Eagle Pass really
got hit hard by a significant tornado last evening. It also affected
a city across the Rio Grande, Piedras Negras, Mexico. There are 10
confirmed deaths for both communities, including 7 near Eagle Pass.
Five of those seven deaths were in a mobile home. Major destruction.
Over 100 injuries, including some critical. A Tornado Watch is out
for South Texas until late this afternoon.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Drought can cause more problems than we
imagine. For a long time, a raging wildfire has been underway in SE
Georgia. The latest total for burned acreage is 53,000. Officials now
estimate that the fire is now 50% contained. Smoke from these huge
fires spread northward even into parts of Tennessee.

SNOW IN BIRMINGHAM ON APRIL 25: It happened 97 years ago today on
April 25, 1910. The temperature dropped to 33 and there were snow
flurries. The latest ever on record for the Birmingham area.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: To show you how Little Miss Molly is
universally loved (well, almost), met two ladies on the walking track
this morning and they spent several minutes loving Miss Molly. Of
course, Molly loved that. One of the ladies told me if we ever
decided to get rid of Miss Molly, she would take her in a heartbeat.
She already owns a large dog that is just as affable and outgoing as
Molly. Whew! Do not think I could stand getting rid of Molly, even if
I was old and decrepit. Life goes on.....

...Storms Arrive Tomorrow...

The long awaited spring storm system will get closer to Alabama today,
but during the daytime hours most of the organized showers and
thunderstorms will remain to the west, where strong to severe storms
are possible across a large part of Arkansas, Louisiana, and
Mississippi. Around here the day will be warm and breezy with a mix of
sun and clouds. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the low to mid
80s, about five to eight degrees above normal for April 25. A few
showers and storms could enter West Alabama tonight.

TOMORROW: Our long dry spell will finally come to an end as the band
of showers and storms moves into Alabama. There is a chance that some
of the storms will be strong to severe as they pass through, but with
marginal instability values and weakening wind fields, that hopefully
will prevent a major severe weather threat. At this time we are
projecting rain amounts of one-half to one inch for the I-20/59
corridor, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden. Up
in the Tennessee Valley, places like Huntsville and Muscle Shoals
could see well over one inch of rain. The best chance of the stronger
storms will come from about 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The showers and
storms will end tomorrow evening as a slot of dry moves into the state
from the west.
Friday promises to be a dry and pleasant day with a partly sunny sky
and a high in the mid 70s.

RACE WEEKEND: A disturbance in the upper atmosphere will pass through
Alabama on Saturday, and that feature will bring some clouds, and it
just might squeeze out a few showers across the state by the afternoon
and evening hours. We need to note here that we expect moisture to be
very limited, and rainfall amounts should be light and spotty. But, a
brief shower is not out of the question during the Aaron's 312 at the
Talladega Superspeedway Saturday afternoon. Then, on Sunday, that
impulse is long gone and we expect a mostly sunny and pleasant day.
The high on Saturday will be in the mid 70s, with upper 70s likely on
Sunday.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Birmingham's rain deficit for the year is now a
whopping 12.31"; for the month of April the total is only 0.64". The
last measurable rain was on April 11, but the total on that date was
only 0.04".

HODGEPODGE: Severe thunderstorms raked parts of Oklahoma and Texas
yesterday and last night; at one point the tower at DFW Airport had to
be evacuated due to a severe storm with a possible tornado near the
facility. Flash flooding was reported in Denton, Texas (north of
Dallas/Fort Worth), where over six inches of rain was reported in
spots. About a dozen homes were damaged in Flower Mound, in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area. In South Texas a tornado touched down near
Eagle Pass, and was responsible for multiple injuries with damage to a
number of homes. Denver, CO was soaked yesterday by 1.84" of rain with
a temperature hovering near 40 degrees all day. A total of 2.15" of
rain was measured at Lincoln, Nebraska.

DRY AND WARM UNTIL THURSDAY: It was nice to see a cluster of
showers move across the Tennessee Valley this morning. The rain was
steady and slow, so it was beneficial for a few areas. Decatur
Airport received 0.64 of an inch and Huntsville 0.40. Do not look for
much additional rain until our main storm system gets here Thursday.
A major storm system will be moving across the Central Plains.
Already moist air is streaming northward into our area. Some showers
could reach us late Wednesday night, but everything is falling in
place for Thursday to be or stormy day. There should be some showers
and thunderstorms already underway up over NW Alabama early in the
day. Here in Central Alabama, including the greater Birmingham area,
the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be from about
midday through the afternoon. All of Alabama is currently under a
slight risk for severe weather Thursday. Those outlooks could be
modified before then. Some of the latest model runs back off on the
rainfall a little, but we still think that parts of Central Alabama
will get close to an inch.

A BAD, BAD DAY IN 1908: On April 24, 1908, two destructive
tornadoes moved across Alabama. The worst of the two cut a path 125
miles long across five North Alabama counties. It first touched down
near Dora in Walker County at 2:10 p.m. It then tracked NE across
Warrior in North Jefferson County, through the Royal and Wynnville
communities in Blount County, then into Albertville in Marshall
County with major destruction. It lifted NE of the Sylvania community
in DeKalb County. The most intense damage was near Dora and at
Albertville. About one-half of Albertville was destroyed. A 9-ton oil
tank was picked up and moved ½ mile. A 9-car freight train was
overturned and the freight cars destroyed. About 150 buildings were
destroyed in Albertville with 15 fatalities and 150 injuries. About
12 dead near Dora. The total Alabama fatalities that day was 37. The
total across the south was 310 with 155 in Mississippi, including 153
in Hattiesburg.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A major severe weather outbreak underway in
the midsection of the nation. A moderate risk is posted for much of
Central and East Texas, most of Oklahoma and Kansas, and extreme
Western Arkansas. This includes San Antonio, Dallas-Ft. Worth,
Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita and Topeka. A classic tornado was
photographed near Protection, Kansas yesterday by storm chaser George
Kourounis. Protection is located on US-160 in extreme South Kansas NW
of Buttermilk. I would love to have lunch in Buttermilk, Kansas. I am
addicted to small town USA. One of the most memorable lunches I ever
had was in a tiny, tiny café at Pine Knot in the mountains of Eastern
Kentucky. Coldest in Alaska this morning was 9 above. I believe that
is the first time this season nobody in Alaska had zero. A big
snowstorm for Southern Colorado. About 21 inches expected in the
Pikes Peak region and 9 to 14 inches at the Air Force Academy north
of Colorado Springs.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: There is something about Little Miss
Molly and cats and rabbits. She loves to chase things. She chases
birds, snowflakes, cats, rabbits and bugs. On our walk, the Community
Cat was strolling at the far end of the walking track. Molly caught a
glimpse from 50 yards away and away she went like a Cheetah on the
African plain. The cat backed into a row of shrubbery to hide and for
a full minute, Molly and the cat were face-to-face only inches away.
The cat finally hissed and Molly headed south—the little coward. But
life goes on....

...Moisture Levels Slowly Increasing...

Most communities across North-Central Alabama, including Birmingham,
have now gone eleven days in a row without measurable rain. And, the
last days with measurable rain on April 10 and 11 only brought 0.07".
The rain deficit for the year is now over one foot (12.16" to be
exact), and a large part of North Alabama is considered to be in an
"extreme drought" by NOAA. So, needless to say we will try to focus on
just how much rain will fall across our parched state this week.

TODAY: We will mention the chance of a few scattered showers across
North Alabama today and tonight as a weak surface boundary drifts
southward into an increasingly moist airmass. But, there is little
upper support for rain today, and rain totals should be light and
spotty. The best chance of scattered showers will come this afternoon
and this evening north of I-20, but a few isolated ones are not out of
the question across the central part of the state. While a few peeks
of sunshine are likely, the sky will be mostly cloudy today with a
high in the 77 to 81 degree range, just a little above normal for
April 24.

To the west, there is a very significant risk of severe thunderstorms
and tornadoes across the Southern Plains this afternoon and tonight;
some cities at risk include Dallas/Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa,
and Wichita.

TOMORROW: We believe most of the day tomorrow will be dry and warm
here in Alabama with a mix of sun and clouds. There is only a very
small chance of any one spot getting wet; most of the organized
showers and storms will remain to the west of here. It will be very
late tomorrow night before the storms approach the western border of
Alabama.

THURSDAY: Finally we have a shot at some beneficial rain as the main
upper trough moves in from the west. We will highlight a good chance
of showers and thunderstorms statewide on Thursday, with the potential
for one inch of rain over the northern half of the state. South
Alabama communities can expect about one-half inch, but in that part
of Alabama they are not in drought conditions and soil moisture is
rather plentiful. A few strong thunderstorms could be involved, but
with wind fields slowly weakening, we don't expect a major severe
weather threat on Thursday at this time. The showers and storms will
move out of Alabama Thursday evening.

RACE WEEKEND: For now we will continue with a dry forecast for Friday
and the weekend; great
news for NASCAR fans streaming into Talladega for the weekend races.
Temperatures should be comfortable with afternoon temperatures peaking
in the mid to upper 70s. Early morning lows should be generally in the
50s.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest spot in Alaska yesterday morning was
Anaktuvuk Pass with 5 degrees. San Juan, Puerto Rico reported 3.04" of
rain yesterday. Wink, TX was the nation's hottest place with 93
degrees.
