==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a nice late Fall day across Alabama on this
Saturday. Good weather to do that last minute Christmas shopping. Skies
were mostly clear across the area, and the anticipated cloudiness has not
shown up yet. Satellite photos reveal a band of clouds over southern
Illinois, Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. This cloudiness is affiliated
with a surface trough that is swinging our way. Temperatures behind the
trough are not dramatically colder, but as you look further upstream, you
find the Arctic air over the Upper Midwest. At noon, International Falls,
MN was reporting 0F with a wind chill of -20F. This air will be sweeping
south behind a strong cold front that will reach Alabama tonight. Skies
should become cloudy, and the front could squeeze out a few sprinkles of
rain late tonight.

SUNDAY WEATHER: Tomorrow will be a good day to stay indoors.
Northwesterly winds will be quite strong, averaging 15-25 mph. There could
be a few snow flurries from time to time, but they will only add emphasis to
the miserable conditions, and should not cause any travel problems.
Temperatures will struggle to rise into the upper 30s before giving up the
ghost and falling back during the afternoon hours. Sunday night promises to
be the coldest night so far this season, with readings falling into the 15
degree range across much of the area. The coldest 2004 reading is 15F on
January 7th of this year. If the temperature falls to 13F, it will be the
coldest since January 29, 2003 in Birmingham. Needless to say, precautions
should be taken Sunday night to protect life and property from the potential
hard freeze.

MID WEEK STORM SYSTEM: Winds will quickly shift back to the south on
Monday, allowing a little moderation in temperature. Readings will likely
stay above freezing Tuesday morning. Moisture levels will also be on the
increase on a strong southwesterly flow and showers will break out Tuesday
afternoon. A low will form over East Texas and head eastward, spreading
some heavy rains into Alabama, along with storms over the southern part of
the state. The precipitation from this event should be liquid, not frozen.
Winds will shift back to the northwest, ushering more cold air into Alabama
by Wednesday night.

CHRISTMAS SYSTEM: Cold air will be in place over the South as a low pressure
system forms in the western Gulf on Christmas Eve. This system will move
ENE across the Gulf to a point south of Pensacola Friday morning. On this
track, it will spread precipitation across a large part of Alabama. If the
cold air is deep enough and there is enough moisture, residents over North
Alabama might awaken to more than presents Christmas morning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1932: The first playoff game in NFL history, which pitted
the Chicago Bears against the Portsmouth Spartans, had to be moved indoors
into Chicago Stadium because of bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snow in
the Windy City. The playing field had to be shortened to eighty yards to
fit in the stadium. The edge of the field ran right up to the walls of the
stadium floor. It looked more like today's arena football than the NFL to
which we are accustomed today.

...Cold Blast Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Today will be a relatively nice day across the area
with a good bit of sunshine and temperatures warming to near normal levels
for this time of year. The first in a series of cold fronts will arrive
tonight, turning things sharply colder again. Three different weather
producing systems will affect Alabama during the next 10-11 days, and there
is lots of interest in the S word, especially around Christmas, so let's
work through everything....

TONIGHT/SUNDAY/MONDAY: Skies will become cloudy tonight and there
is a small chance of a little light rain as the front arrives and a few snow
flurries overnight. No accumulations are expected, although some of the
higher elevations could see a light, light dusting. Tomorrow will be a
miserable day, with biting northwesterly winds ushering in much colder
air. Temperature will remain in the 30s all day, with little sunshine until
late in the day. There could even be a few snow flurries. Sunday night
promises to be a cold one, with readings falling into the teens over a wide
areas of North Alabama. We are calling for a range of 13-23 by Monday
morning with single digit wind chills. This will produce a hard freeze over
almost the entire area. Monday will still be very cold with a good bit of
sunshine.

MIDWEEK: Moisture will quickly return on Tuesday, bringing back the
clouds and rain chances will return by late afternoon. Notice, I said rain.
This system should be warm enough to produce rain. It will turn windy and
colder behind another cold front that will arrive Wednesday night. The
precip could turn briefly to snow on the back side Wednesday night, but no
accumulations are expected then.

SNOW FOR CHRISTMAS? There does appear to be a chance that
precipitation will return as early as Christmas Eve, and with cold air in
place, the precipitation could fall as snow across parts of the Southern
U.S. It is just way too early to be specific at this time. If you took
the afternoon run of the GFS model as gospel, there could be a significant
blanket of white (over 6 inches) beginning during the day on Christmas Eve
over parts of Alabama and the South. Not a forecast at this time, just a
possibility.

WARMER, THEN COLDER: I guess we could call it rollercoaster weather
or topsy-turvy weather due to our rapid pace series of weather changes. Look
for almost all sunshine Saturday with temperatures recovering to the mid
50s. Won't last. Much colder air will overspread the region on Sunday with
NW winds of 12-25 mph and highs struggling to reach the upper 30s. The
threat of snow flurries seems to have lessened somewhat on Sunday, but there
is still the possibility of a few. They should cause no problem. Monday will
be mostly sunshine with an early morning low averaging 17 across Central
Alabama. Clouds will increase again on Tuesday with a chance of some rain
later in the day and highs recovering to around 50.

A JITTERY GULF OF MEXICO: The Gulf of Mexico is irritable and
somewhat unsettled. Because of that, a low pressure area is expected to form
and move east across the Southern Gulf and then cross Florida into the
Atlantic. We hope you will check in on our new weather blog frequently
during the next week because the weather could become interesting. If we
were forced to offer an opinion at the moment, we think Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day will be dry and cold. If the Gulf of Mexico low were to take a
more northward track, the weather could be more interesting. We're not
saying it will, but stay tuned.

A TRIVIA QUESTION: You have probably noticed some forecasts in
recent months that go something like this: "Partly cloudy this morning then
partly sunny this afternoon." Question: when would you get more
sunshine-that morning or that afternoon? Hint: I don't know the answer but
there is a difference. What is your opinion?

FRIVOLOUS FRIDAY STUFF: The town of Embarrass in North Minnesota
was not named that because they are embarrassed over their bitter cold
winter temperatures. It was 22 below there this morning-the coldest in the
USA including Alaska...it was 18 below at Anaktuvuk, Alaska...at Barter
Island it was 9 below with east wind at 50 and a wind chill of minus
42...way far away on the other side of the North Pole, it was 58 below in
Ojmjakon and they are expecting 67 below Saturday night. That town in
Eastern Siberia has the reputation of being the world's coldest continually
inhabited location. I would be trying to hook a ride out of town.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: During an early morning walk, little
Miss Molly had her "city inspector's" hat on. That nosy little rascal had to
check out everything, including every leaf lying on the walk, every tree.
She reversed directions at least 50 times, went in circles, and I thought
she was determined to give me whiplash...sure would be interesting to see
Molly's reaction to snow. Even though she was born in Layton, Utah, the only
snow she has seen was a few flurries here last winter. She tried to chase
every flake. Dumb dog...Miss Molly still does not like loud noises. She now
has a retreat to get away at times like that. It is a soft chair in the
corner of the back bedroom. You can find her there nestled in the corner of
the chair with only her little head resting on the arm looking out the door
into the living area watching everything. Last night, I tried to find her
and I could see those two little eyes glimmering in the darkness like a deer
in the headlights. Life goes on, snow flurries or no snow flurries.

...Much Colder By Sunday...

ANOTHER ARCTIC BLAST AHEAD: Get set for another shot of very cold
air this weekend. While we will be close to 50 today and tomorrow, very cold
Arctic air will plunge southward into Alabama Saturday night and Sunday.
Temperatures will fall into the 30s Sunday morning and pretty much stay
there all day. Strong winds will put wind chill values in the single digits
at times, and a few snow flurries are likely. A dusting of snow will be
possible across higher terrain over northeast Alabama, but we do not expect
any accumulation as far south as I-20.

By Monday morning, low temperatures in the 13 to 23 degree range
will be likely across north and central Alabama, with the colder valleys
close to 13, and the ridge tops closer to 23. Most communities will be in
the upper teens.

PRE-CHRISTMAS STORM: We believe temperatures will warm sufficiently
for precipitation to fall in the form of rain when the next storm system
begins to affect the state Tuesday of next week. In our forecast package, we
will mention the chance of rain at times beginning Tuesday afternoon lasting
into Wednesday. There is some chance the rain could briefly change to light
snow as much colder air returns Wednesday night and Thursday, but for now
the chance of any significant accumulation looks relatively small. Just not
a big deal.

CHRISTMAS STORM? There seems to be a much better opportunity of some
snow across Alabama with the next storm system, which could begin as early
as Christmas eve. All of the ingredients will be around, if the current
model trends verify: a good moisture supply, a surface low in the Gulf of
Mexico, favorable jet structure, and a good depth of cold air. Way, way too
early to tell if everything will come together at the right time. We will be
able to make a specific call on this event early next week.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Four years ago today it was very warm across
Alabama and this led to a rash of tornadoes, including an F4 that killed 11
persons just south of the Tuscaloosa area. This strong tornado was tracked
live on the ABC 33/40 tower cam. Later other tornadoes touched down in St.
Clair County and there was a lot of damage in the Coats Bend area ENE of
Gadsden.

Temperatures were moderating some today after another cold night
that saw low temperatures drop into the upper teens and lower 20s.

SOME IMPORTANT CHANGES: Clouds were spreading eastward from
Louisiana and Mississippi this afternoon. This will help hold temperatures
up by about 10 degrees tonight as compared to last night. We're not going to
have a major warm up and by late Saturday night and Sunday it's going to
turn a lot colder. We should get a little light rain in here late Saturday
and maybe some snow flurries late Saturday night. Sunday will be windy and
colder with occasional snow flurries and temperatures will get no higher
than the mid 30s. We don't see any problem with those snow flurries,
although there could be a dusting on the higher ridges in east and NE
Alabama. By the time you get up Monday morning, the temperature is going to
be well down into the teens and the high on Monday will struggle to reach
the freezing mark. After the Sunday snow flurries, the next precipitation
will be toward midweek starting off as rain.

THURSDAY RAMBLES: Coldest temperatures in the lower 48 this morning
included 8 below at Doyleville, Colorado and 9 below at several locations in
Maine and New Hampshire. Radar was actually indicating some precipitation in
Louisiana and Arkansas, but it was most likely evaporating before it hit the
ground...when the weather gets really, really bad, the very best in people
emerges. Remember the Blizzard of '93 in Alabama where strangers volunteered
to help strangers as much as they would their own family or neighbors. A lot
of improvising in times like that. I ran across this interesting item.
During Canada's worst blizzard in 1947, a farmer near Moose Jaw on the
Canadian Plains, had to cut a hole in his barn roof to milk his cows. This
was due to huge drifts all around the barn and the barn doors could not be
opened.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I'm still amazed at how a little
9-pound puppy can become such a big part of my life. I miss her even when
away from home a few hours. If there has ever been a classic case of bonding
between a human and a dog, this is it. Sure have played a lot with her since
last night. She has developed a new habit with her rubber ball. She brings
it to me, jumps up slightly off the floor and slams the ball on my foot,
which is her instruction to kick it. I kick it all the way across the living
area and it bounces against the front door. She used to chase it all the
way. Now she holds back and crouches on the floor and fields it like a
shortstop as it bounces back toward her. Then she grabs the ball and makes
me chase her around and around the couch until my tongue is hanging out.
I'll never get old as long as little Miss Molly is around. Life goes on.

...More Very Cold Air Down the Road...

Lots of weather to discuss today. Today will be rather quiet with
ample sunshine and temperatures reaching the low 50s in most places this
afternoon. Slightly cooler air slips in here tomorrow and Saturday with
highs dropping back into the mid to upper 40s. Then, the fun and games will
begin. Here we go:

SUNDAY: A major blast of Arctic air arrives. For now we have high
temperatures in the mid 30s, but many places would stay below freezing all
day. A few snow flurries are likely; the ground could become white across
higher terrain in northeast Alabama, but we don't expect any accumulation
down this way.

MONDAY: Looks like we could drop into the 12 to 17 degree range by
early Monday morning. Probably colder than the lows we saw around here
yesterday morning.

DECEMBER 22-24: A storm system will affect the deep south. A
majority of the computer models right now suggest this will be a rain event
for Alabama, with a possible change to snow on the backside as colder air
returns. We are not comfortable making a specific forecast right now, but we
will give it a shot tomorrow morning.

CHRISTMAS DAY: I think we can promise cold weather. Most likely dry
and very cold across the deep south.

BEYOND CHRISTMAS: Model consistency is not good beyond Christmas.
There have been some hints of a second storm that tries to form in the
December 26-28 range, but some model runs do not show anything in that time
frame at all.

It looks like we will have a temporary break from the polar express
during the final days of December as the jet shifts back to the north.

ALABAMA TODAY: It was easily our coldest morning in about 11 months. Since
the hard freeze was so widespread, let's look at a comprehensive list of
this morning's lows:

13 in Collinsville
14 in Valley Head
17 in Rainbow City and Black Creek
18 in Pinson, Center Point, Cottondale, DeSoto State
Park, Crossville and at Vinemont.
19 in Decatur, Auburn, Ft. Payne, Talladega
20 in Birmingham, Huntsville, Weaver, Glencoe,
Alabaster, Russellville, Ashland, Alexander City
21 in Anniston, Wedowee, Hackleburg
22 in Muscle Shoals, Troy, Trussville, Tuscaloosa,
Clanton, Livingston, Greystone Farms
23 in Oxford and the Shelby County Airport
24 in Evergreen
25 in Mobile
26 in Montgomery

MORE WINTRY WEATHER AHEAD: While it won't be as cold tonight, but still a
hard freeze, and temperatures will start moderating Thursday, look for some
more colder air to arrive over the weekend we think Sunday will be quite
uncomfortable with north winds of 12 to 25 mph, occasional snow flurries and
highs only in the upper 30s. Monday looks even colder with lows in the teens
and highs not much above freezing.

A WINTER WONDERLAND: Even more snow accumulated in the higher elevations of
the Great Smoky Mountains and the Western North Carolina mountains
overnight. This morning the temperature was a frigid zero atop Mt. LeConte
with 20 inches of snow on the ground, including 4 additional inches in the
last 24 hours. Their high yesterday was only 11. It was 7 degrees on
Newfound Gap with 8 inches of snow, while Beech Mountain, N.C. had a low of
6 and one-half foot of snow. Atop Mt. Mitchell, N.C. there was 9 inches of
snow on the ground and a low of 3 above...around the rest of the USA, the
coldest in the lower 48 was 10 below zero at Saranac Lake, New York. It was
42 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska. At Dead Horse in Northern Alaska, the wind
chill has been running as low as minus 62 today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I thought little Miss Molly would get to go
ice skating on the Old Crow Creek this morning, but there was very little
ice. It's a fairly fast-running wet-weather stream across from the Old Crow
Motel. On our morning walk, the Old Crow Motel sure did look barren and
lonesome. Not a living creature in any of the rooms (er, limbs). We didn't
see any crows, other birds, gnats, spiders, mosquitoes-you name it. Little
Miss Molly and I were the only living souls. She, like me, loves cold
weather and she sure did look cute in her Christmas sweater. Trying to catch
up on play time with her. None of us got in bed before midnight so she slept
a bit late this morning. Don't know what I am going to get that little
rascal for Christmas. She no longer has an addiction for toilet paper and
she is loaded on toys. Life goes on.

...A Real Blast of Cold Air...

Lets begin with the good news. There is an excellent chance our next
severe weather event here in Alabama won't be until sometime in 2005. And,
no heavy rain or flood threats in the near future, so the rivers, creeks,
and streams will have a great chance to get back within their banks and the
ground will be able to dry out. Unfortunately, however, that ground might be
frozen by the time we get to the end of the month!

The coldest air so far this season will continue to funnel in here
today with an icy wind. Despite total sunshine, most places will never see
40 today, and wind chill values will be below freezing at times.

Tonight, with a clear sky and light wind, temperatures should be
below freezing for a good 12 hours, and most places will wind up in the
upper teens. The colder valleys will be closer to 15, and the ridge tops
will probably be in the low 20s at daybreak. But, a hard freeze will be seen
statewide, even down to the Gulf coast.

A temporary moderating trend begins tomorrow afternoon with the
mercury reaching the mid to upper 40s, and low 50s are possible by Thursday.
But, another shot of cold air slips in here on Friday, and we will mention
the chance of a few snow flurries on Friday as this new surge of chilly air
arrives. Over the weekend, a similar setup for Sunday with yet another cold
front rolling in here with the chance of a few flurries early in the day, or
late Saturday night. Moisture will be very limited, and the flurries should
not amount to much. The big issue simply remains the cold air pattern in
place.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: As we often point out here, there is little skill in
a specific forecast beyond seven days, But, the overall pattern continues to
suggest very cold weather for Alabama. Models show several possibilities for
a snow set-up across the deep south, but we are simply too far away to be
specific, or to have any confidence in a specific system forming. Stay
tuned!

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, we have been talking about the coming cold air for
two weeks now, and it seems all of those predictions are coming true. We
will experience the coldest air since last winter this week as some Arctic
air spills into the Deep South. Preparations should be made for hard
freezes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. It will not be a surprise to
see reports of lows in the teens, especially Tuesday night.

TONIGHT'S WEATHER: Another cold front is racing toward Alabama this
afternoon. It will push through the area during the early morning hours.
It is a dry front, so it will be accompanied only by a few hours of
cloudiness and a tiny chance of a little light rain during the overnight.
Winds will shift around to the northwest overnight and readings will fall
into the upper 30s.

MONDAY WEATHER: Monday will feature a breezy northwest wind that will be
ushering in colder air. Those winds will average 10-20 mph with occasional
higher guests. Skies will be mostly sunny, but temperatures will struggle
to rise through the 40s.

HARD FREEZES AHEAD: Latest indications are that temperatures will fall into
the lower 20s across a wide area of North Alabama Monday night.
Temperatures will be at 25 or below for several hours, resulting in a hard
freeze. These conditions will be repeated Tuesday night and again on
Wednesday night. Readings on Tuesday night will even be a degree or two
colder than Monday night. There will likely be a few minimums in the
teens.

PRECAUTIONS: With several nights of freezing temperatures and at least
three nights with hard freeze conditions, homeowners and industries should
take steps to protect life and property. Tender plants and vegetation
should be protected. Antifreeze levels should be checked. Steps should be
taken to prevent exposed pipes from freezing. Remember to make sure that
pets have proper shelter and adequate unfrozen water supplies. Make sure
you and others have sufficient heat.

BEYOND MIDWEEK: Skies should remain sunny through midweek. Some clouds
will return to the area by Thursday, but skies by then should still be just
partly cloudy. Those partly cloudy skies will continue on Friday in wake of
another cold front. There are indications that our main model, the GFS may
be out to lunch by the weekend. It indicated a less amplified pattern by
the weekend, which is not borne out by some of the other models. They tend
to keep a stronger trough over the Deep South. This would mean colder
conditions than my earlier packages indicated. In fact, one front should
push through unimpeded Thursday night, followed by another one next Sunday.
This will maintain our cold regime.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: The New England Patriots defeated the Miami Dolphins
in driving snow at Foxboro MA. With snow covering the field and New England
in position to kick a game winning field goal, New England Head Coach Ron
Meyer ordered a path cleared for the field goal attempt. The move was
against the rules, but no one stopped him. Place kicker John Smith made the
kick and the Patriots won the game 3-0.

...Chilly Mornings Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! The upper air charts remind you of some sort of
monster roller coaster. Last night, the jet stream was moving across
flowing across the northern tier of states before turning sharply south at
Minnesota and screaming south toward Alabama. The axis of the trough has
rotated to the east of the state, but Alabama is still in a northwesterly
flow aloft.

SUNSHINE RETURNS: Skies cleared overnight across the area, and we
will enjoy a good bit of sunshine. Skies will be partly cloudy, with
temperatures rising into the middle and upper 50s. Another cold front is
heading toward the state, and it will arrive during the overnight hours.
Skies may become briefly cloudy late this evening, but there does not appear
to be much chance of any precipitation, except maybe a few sprinkles.
Temperatures tonight will bottom out in the upper 30s.

WEEK AHEAD: The cold front will deliver a fresh, stronger shot of
chilly air. In fact, it might well be the coldest air we have seen since
early last February. Monday night will see several hours of temperatures in
the lower 20s. Temperatures on Tuesday will have a hard time making it even
to 40 degrees across North Alabama. Tuesday night will probably be the
coldest night, with lows even a degree or two colder than Monday night.
Might even see some teens then.

We will see low to mid 20s on Thursday morning, and then readings
will slowly moderate through the end of the week. But we will still see
overnight lows near or below freezing through Saturday morning.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: Another front will barrel through the area on
Friday, but it will be dry. There are hints that low pressure will form
along the Gulf Coast by Saturday, spreading precipitation our way Saturday.
It looks like it will be liquid, not frozen.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: A waterspout moved onshore from the Puget
Sound in Western Washington State. One person was injured and half a
million dollars in damage was caused by the tornado, which was the worst of
record in the area.
